InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 10-29-08

zenpreview1_super.jpg Trained as a master of the Om martial arts, the hired mercenary Zen comes back to the comic book world this week. Joe Casey will be on writing duties with a nice cover by Jae Lee. The 99 cent comic will be a prequel to the regular ongoing coming this December. Zen is one of those characters that could breakout quickly, so check out this week’s release and don’t forget about his very affordable first appearance back in 1987. At a mere few dollars, you could get a first appearance of the Blue guy! Not a bad deal with all of these cockroaches, um I mean Hollywood exec’s guys roaming around.

Zen Intergalactic Ninja # 0

Zen goes down as the best pick of the week, but here are a few others to check out….

spawn_185.jpg

Spawn #185  A Spawn comic makes the Hot Picks for the first time. Good ol’ controversial Todd McFarlane is coming back to Spawn! Will this alone be enough to sustain a rightful place on the Hot Picks? How about throwing artist Whilce Portacio into the mix? Bringing back 2 of the original founders of Image comics to Spawn sounds like a good time.

asmann2008_cov.jpg

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1  The comic that finally reveals who Jackpot is! Does anyone care at this point? Some fans do, some don’t. Wouldn’t it be nice though if Marvel really pulls the rug from under us and does not make Jackpot Mary Jane? Please Marvel surprise us and let us have a ‘holy crap!’ moment this week.

firstclassxmen_1.jpg

X-Men First Class Giant Size Special #1  An array of artist team up to bring this special. You never know what artist might make an appearance here. finalcrisisrageofthe_greenlanterns1.jpgFinal Crisis Rage of the Red Lanterns #1  The prelude to ‘The Blackest Night. DC has now made 4 prelude’s to ‘The Blackest Night’. What is up with that? WellDC, one saving grace you have and know is that anything Green Lantern these days SELLS.

ultspmannual3.jpg

Ultimate Spider-Man #3  Marvel will guarantee that this comic here will be one of the most controversial comics spoken about this year. What could it possibly be? Pick this comic up at your local comic shop and thumb through it (without the owner yelling at you ‘hey this ain’t no library!’) and see exactly what Marvel is talking about. If it’s a biggie, buy it and hold onto it. If not, write a note to Joe Q telling him you just got yelled at because of him!

ultimatecapannual.jpgcapannual8.jpg

Ultimate Captain America Annual #1  The man mostly everyone loves to hate Jeph Loeb writes as a man mostly loved John Romita Jr. does the penciling. The cover is a beauty, but it’s a kudos swipe from the original 1986 Mike Zeck cover from Captain America Annual #8. Wolverine is in the spot of the Black Panther. A low print run makes the Wolverine/Cap cover a great commodity. If you could get this comic at $40, get it. As far as the annual this week? With the homage to the Zeck cover, get 1986 book.

cap_bowen.jpg

Captain America Bowen Statue  Last week it was Thor, this week Captain America gets the nod with the absolutely stunning Bowen treatment. Just like Thor last week, at a retail price tag of $300, this is well worth the money.

Hey, is it FREE comic book day again? This week a few of the comic companies are giving free comics for the Halloween holiday. Check out a few covers of the freebies. Make sure you ask you local comic shop about these!

Marvel’s Flash Thompson Fights in The Middle East

flashthompson_pic.jpgThis past week saw a retelling of an origin with Flash Thompson. Sean, owner of X-Treme Comics in Boca RatonFlorida pointed out that this is an issue that many readers and fans might not have seen coming. In this issue we take the tour of duty with Flash into the war torn region of the Middle East. As with any war, tragedy will ensue as this comic so vividly details. If you click on the header here, you’ll find out exactly how things turn out for Thompson. Do not want to spoil anything right here on the front page…….

asm574_cov.jpgIn Amazing Spider-Man # 574, while Flash Thompson fights for his country he suffers a huge emotional and physical blow. A blast changes his life forever, as he now lies in a hospital bed with no legs. The realism of the war takes a turn into the comic book world. Where will Marvel take this? X-Treme Comics does not seem worried at all actually. Sean says that Spider-Man sales for him are very healthy much to do with good storylines and good artwork. He says that with Marvel at a staggering 50 plus % of market share, they are indeed doing something right! Yes Marvel is firing on all cylinders these days.

….So do you have $225,000 laying around? Here is Flash Thompson’s First appearance which also happens to be someone else’s first too.

superman_emblem.jpg Superman leads the way with a very short list this week. Clark Kent‘s Pa passed away (again) last week and things are just going to get tougher from here. A whole cluster of Kryptonians are coming to earth to give Supes a hard time. 100,000 according to DC’s last count and they all have the same powers as Superman. The new gang is not exactly very ‘earthlike’ so they don’t get the reasoning why Superman is so loyal and such a wuss, er…I mean a good guy.  Here are a few taglines associated with the new mini, ‘Things Will Never Be The Same’ as this miniseries will ‘Change Things Forever’. The ‘New Status Quo Begins Here’. Wow DCsure knows how to stir things up (yawn).

superman_variant.gif

Superman Krypton #1  So here it is fans, the life changing moments for Superman, forever! DC needs to prove their case already on which direction they really want to go with their marquee player. Again with so many of their characters, too many changes or life altering or even death moments does not equate to sales. Fans are yearning for some consistency with the entire DC universe. Maybe this time they get it. It’s wishful thinking, but you have to be willing to give it a shot. Besides with 100,000 Kryptonians coming at Superman, expect lots of help from fellow heroes. Hopefully we get lots of cameos from DC’s archive and maybe even some introductions of some new heroes and villains. That’s about what you could expect from this series, otherwise it’ll just be another feeble attempt to cure a character that is in some serious need of a makeover. Come on Clark, get that red underwear off and join everyone else that seems to have passed you by.

new_universe_superman.jpg

Take a look at a decent rendition of Superman’s costume from an old Wizard Magazine article which was called ‘Ultimate DC’. This is a Superman that can be taken more seriously if tweaked out a little bit.

msmarv032_cov.jpgMS. Marvel #32 Here we have a look into the past of one of Marvel’s female heroes. Marvel gives fans a peak at MS. Marvels past in what is usually called an origin issue the last I checked. Although not calling it that can make for an okay pick up this week. Not looking at a huge ‘buy’ issue here, but in the market for a semi-origin issue? Here it is.

unknown_variant.jpgUnknown Soldier #1  A War comic comes back to the DC arsenal this week. Joe Kubert made the Unknown Soldier an awesome comic back in the day. This time around DC’s Vertigo line will have the pleasure of doing the justice of what a war comic should be about. Not that Joe didn’t do a great job, but I’m sure the ‘comic code authority’ held back much of a story that never would have been allowed. Just expect hard core violence and some realism that is involved with war, thus creating a buzz about this comic.

thor_statue.gifCheck out this beauty of a statue coming from Bowen this week. The God of Thunder gets the kudos from Bowen. Awesome detail, awesome color and an awesome posture all add up to only $350 retail. Buy this stunning statue after you buy Thor #126. Thor is coming fans. Sooner than later, an actor will be named, a director, etc. The movie is going to be absolutely huge. The Avengers movie will also include Thor, lots of Thor as the clock starts ticking on this character to completely hammer out some serious cash for the back issue market. Do not wait too much longer with these back issues. And while you’re at it, get this statue!

See you next week.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 10-15-08

savage_dragon_pic.jpg Last week the Barack Obama comic sold out rather quickly due to national media attention. The comic will mark a significant long term investment if he does in fact become the president of The United States (see more on this in last weeks Hot Picks 10-8-08). Sticking with a hot theme and a heated presidential race, Eric Larson will join the fray of the presidential campaign and choose his candidate. Well Mr. Larsen is actually not casting his vote, Savage Dragon is. Yes the Dragon Rocks The Vote this week!

savagedragon137.jpgSavage Dragon # 137 3rd Printing  This week will have a guaranteed sell out sitting on the shelves at your local comic book shop in the morning and by evening time that comic will be scarce. The reason THIS comic might be a better long term investment as opposed to the Barack comic last week is simply because of the media. Less coverage, fewer printings equal less availability. The solo Barack comic last week in essence was a blatant money making comic by IDW publishing (which there is nothing wrong with!), thus leading to the obvious attention and oblivious heavy ordering. This week The Savage Dragon comic features Barack as part of a superhero storyline. Not as much focus on this issue by the media, so you probably won’t be seeing that guy in a suit and tie coming into your local comic shop asking “Hey you guys got that Barack comic with Savage Dragon?”

Other than the Dragon making the Hot Picks list, there are a few others just to keep an eye on this week. Savage Dragon 137 is definitely a good pick up this week. The remainders of the Hot Picks are comics that barely made the list this week, but somehow did. Buy them (as always) at your own discretion.

gbotherside1gcc.jpg

Ghostbusters: The Other Side #1  This comic will be a HOT item for a little while. Everyone loves Ghostbusters and it’ll be a quick sell out, especially the Graham Cracker Variant. The time line for this comic as far as investment is a scant one.

batmanand_the_outsiders12.jpg

Batman and The Outsiders #12  Another week, another DC fatality. DC is soliciting this comic as a ‘death issue’. I yearn for the days that DC will get away from the death scene and give a storyline that just flows in continuity with its universe. Here’s a newsflash DC, death DOES NOT equal sales anymore unless it’s a ‘significant’ character/villain or the storyline in general calls for it. Maybe this is why DC has fallen so behind Marvel in the continuity universe battle. Fans want ‘tightness’ (as Sean, owner from X-Treme Comics in Boca RatonFlorida says) in their Universe ………could not agree more.

amazing-spider-man573.jpg

Amazing Spider-Man #573  The award for most shameless ridiculous do my friend a favor because I like him promotion goes to………Joe Q! The variant features Stephen Colbert on the cover paying homage to Amazing Fantasy # 15. This is a little much giving Colbert the Steve Ditko treatment, but hey Marvel is allowed to get out of hand sometimes no? Just don’t make a bad habit of it.

ultimateorigins5.jpg

sprmnspljmmyolsn1.jpgUltimate Origins # 5 & Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen Special #1  Both of these comics are lead ins to storylines that promise to be big ones.Geoff Johns says of  the New Krypton storyline, “Change is what New Krypton is all about. One-hundred-thousand more Kryptonians. He’s no longer the last son of Krypton”, that might seem interesting. Then there is Loeb saying this about Ultimatum, “It is the end of the beginning.” Vague but interesting nontheles.Rumour has it that an Ultimate charater will bite the dust and Superman will beat the other 100,000 Kryptonians up and win.Bottom line here, unless Lois Lane dies or Ulimate Spider-Man become a courpse, read these comics and just enjoy them.

See you next week.

Invest wisely.

Marvel releases more Ultimatum teasers. For What They Have Done

ultimatum_teaser.jpgYou have to admit that at least these teasers are a bit better than the Secret Invasion ads ‘Who Do You Trust’. Marvel is really pushing the dramatics out for this storyline. The rumor mill churns away with the biggest question ‘who will die?’ Who do you think? Ultimate Iron Man, Cap, Wasp, Wolverine, Strange? Anyway you slice this, it’s looking to be an interesting story indeed. Check out the 4 new images and ask yourself, who will pay the ultimate price?

marvel_logo_01.jpgMarvel’s newest project was teased today. Will it be a success or another miscue? One of Marvel’s new ventures is targeting a certain audience and while it looks ‘cutesy’ it looks like it’ll probably work! The mere presences of these characters brings attention from ALL ages. Targeting an audience with these types of creations will indeed be successful. Now put down that ridiculous monkey variant and start saving for this!

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 10-8-08

barackobamacomic.jpg Without getting TOO political, this year’s presidential race is probably one of the most important if not THE most important election in America‘s history. It’s no secret that America is at a place we have never been before. Between the war in Iraq and the financial state, the next president has their work cut out for them. Indeed, this year’s election is an important one in many ways. It’s also going to be history in the making when the night of November forth 2008 comes to a close. Will there be a woman a heartbeat away from the presidency or will America have their first African American president? Barack Obama and John McCain come to this weeks Hot Picks. Well actually only ONE makes the cut and it’s not the ‘Maverick’.

This week IDW publishing gives a nice comic book biography of Barack Obama as well as John McCain. If Barack becomes our next president of the United States of America, this comic will be historic in its own right.

gl_35.jpg

greenlanterncorpsvol2_29.jpgGreen Lantern # 35 & Green Lantern Corps # 29  Both of these comics coming out this week claim to be the prelude of the new storyline ‘Blackest Night’. Lantern has been hot for some time. The attention in the past few years has earned the character to get a director recently attached to his film. Greg Berlanti gets the nod. He directed ONE film, The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy. DC/WB really wants to get in this Comic book movie game huh? Anyway, get both of these issues so you don’t miss out. Wow, one movie?…………a romance movie?!………

Others To Watch For……

crossed1w.jpgcrossed_1garthennis.jpgendersgamebattleschool_1sketchvariant.jpgEndersGameBattleSchool #1  Best selling Sci-Fi author Orson Scott Card brings a new sc-fi adventure to Marvel. Join the fun and buy this comic.

Crossed #1  Garth Ennis has been a busy man lately. Jump on board to Garth’s newest ‘twisted’ creation.

flashgordan_2.jpg

Flash Gordon #2  The number one issue was a quick sellout with great reviews. Why would the 2nd issue NOT sell out?

See you next week.
