InvestComics Hot Picks – Comic Reprint Special

Reprint Special

These days even reprints of popular books are getting some love!  Here are the best to invest in…

The Goon 1 (One for One)

Dark Horse used this to expose readers to some of their best work.  Tough to find in any grade it will certainly pay off down the road when the rest of the world starts hunting down rare Goon appearances.

Chew 1 (Image Firsts)

Similar in many ways to Dark Horse’s One for One, Image comics released a ton of reprints of popular titles for only a dollar.  The rarest are easily Orc Stain and the Walking Dead.  All it’s going to take is the Chew TV series to hit and this one will blow up too.  The good news is that these are out there and most stores continue to sell them for a dollar!

Mad Millennium Edition Error

Some of DC’s Millennium editions are great collectibles.  Reprints of titles include Justice League ofAmerica1, The Watchmen 1 and chrome variants of some famous DC issues. This comic reprints MAD issue 1 which is cool enough but in the error edition DC forgets to acknowledge E.C. comics and the men who made it all happen.

Marvel Milestones Iron Man 55

Publishers love to copy each other.  Marvel Milestones does exactly what DC’s Millennium Editions do.  Other than Secret Wars 8 this is the only one to track down for investment purposes.  Seeing as it’s quite hard to find Iron Man 55 this comic makes it possible to read the story and enjoy the first appearance of Thanos!  Oh and Drax first appears here which could bring some added value when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie comes out.

Mighty Marvel Must Haves

Starting in 2001 Marvel began reprinting key titles in editions that featured more than one issue. The best are 22 and 23 which feature reprints of X-23’s first two appearances.

Y The Last Man Double Feature 2002

It looks like a movie is in the works and seeing what other rare reprinting of first issues go for I expect the comic (which features issues 1, 2) to soar in value.

The Walking Dead (Image Firsts)

So this comic has seen gains to due to an explosive Walking Dead market.  Most know that the first print has three black borders; the second print has no black borders and sells for less.  It seems a third print exists and it’s rare.  It has three black borders but was printed in September of 2011 and had a different back cover than the others.  Its back cover features ads for the AMC show.

Here’s an updated list of current books that are generating big internet sales and general buzz in the industry.

GEOFF JOHNS & DAVID FINCH introduce all new JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA in 2013

DC Comics announced at the DC Entertainment-All Access Sunday panel at Fan Expo Toronto that a new League will be forming.

Launching in 2013, DC Comics will publish a new ongoing comic book series, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch.

“This is a very different kind of team book,” says Geoff Johns. “On first glance, people might think the heroes of the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA stand in the shadows of Superman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the JUSTICE LEAGUE, but Green Arrow, Katana, Martian Manhunter, the new Green Lantern, Stargirl, Vibe, Hawkman and Catwoman thrive in the shadows. They’re underdogs who have everything to prove and something to lose. They’re a team of unlikely heroes who will help one another discover they’re as A-List as anybody — yes, even Vibe. Though getting there won’t be easy. Why they’re formed, why each member joins, what they’re after and who the society of villains is they’re trying to take apart will all be clear in the first issue when it hits early 2013. David and I are really focused on delving deep into what it’s like to not be a member of the big seven and why, sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.”

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for comic releases on 8-29-12

It’s all about DC Comics this week. Seven number one issues to cover here! Now granted the majority of these are Annuals, but this is InvestComics, so we got you covered from yesteryear to present of course! Throughout history of comic collectables, “Annuals” never garnered the monetary value of other comics. The biggest reason for this is because most of the time the annuals were just “fill ins” or reprints of stories within the regular series put in the “Annual” with a new cover slapped on it. Some Annuals of years past and today do command ones attention, but the Annuals of today (DC especially) are incorporating major storylines within their pages. Let’s be clear here though, DC is not breaking ground with including their storylines within their Annuals, but they may have a first with releasing so many Annuals within the same week!

Superman Annual #1

Let’s start with the greatest superhero of all, (mostly voted by public court of opinion, so fight amongst yourselves)…..Superman! Superman Annual #1 comes in with a lot of fanfare. DC is pushing this comic as a must get comic. There are surprise cameos, a new Green Lantern, Aliens and 5 different artists on this comic. Not that highly unusual to have so many artists on one annual book, but what is unusual is the creative changes on this comic from the original solicit. This annual was originally written by Keith Giffen, but now is written by Scott Lobdell. DC also is pushing only one of the artists very hard on this book and that creator is Pascal Alixe, who incidentally did not appear on the original solicit. What’s going on DC? So on to more important things here, anyone know when the first Superman Annual appeared? Let’s see now, the original Superman #1 issue came out in 1939, so that would mean that the first Superman Annual came out 21 years later in 1960, correct? Yes. What exactly happened with the timeline here? Why 21 years for the first annual? The only guess is the oblivious one, DC didn’t think of “annuals” until then. The 1960 Superman Annual will cost a collector only about $1800. Not too shabby for the first Superman Annual. The saving grace for this annual that basically has no intros or first appearances is the artistry of legend Curt Swan! Oh yes and it also has a map of Krypton! Maybe that’s a first?!?

Green Lantern Annual #1

Next up; Green Lantern Annual #1. Much like all of the Annuals coming from DC this week, this particular annual feature’s a major plotline (conclusion) involving the Black Hand. DC says “Everything Changes Here. EVERYTHING!” Okay so you reeled us in DC, good job! Green Lantern’s first Annual came out in 1963. Two superb artists bring this annual to life; Alex Toth and Gil Kane. A very nice story in these pages finds Gil Kane teaching us how to draw Green Lantern. How cool is that?? And look at that beauty of a cover by Gil Kane too. Funny to look at the side by side comparisons of the 2 Green Lantern Annual covers isn’t it? Gil captures the essence of “fun” in comics, while the latest captures the doom and gloom that seems to have overtaken most of the comic covers these days. Oh well, c’est la vie!

Detective Annual #1

Detective Comics Annual #1 this week features the fight of all fights. No not Rob Liefeld and Scott Synder, but Batman vs. The Black Hand Mask. Great cover here, but an even nicer cover from the 1988 Detective Comics Annual #1 from the awesome Klaus Janson. The issue also features the writing talent of legend Denny O’Neil! A five dollar pick up for this one.

It looks like The Rouges will have their way with the Flash in Flash Annual #1, but according to DC’s solicit, something worse than The Rogues waits to attack the Flash! Yea for the reader! Bad for the Flash! 1963 was a very good year (sing that sentence in your best Frank Sinatra voice please) for DC annuals. The Flash Annual #1 debuted with art from “Mr.Flash himself” Carmine Infantino. This $800 comic brings origin stories along with Carmine Infantino. Not much else you need now is there?

Flash Annual #1

Justice League International Annual

Justice League International Annual #1 ties onto Justice League #12 this week. The first Justice League International Annual happened in 1988 with names like Joe Rubinstein (cover), Bill Willingham (Art) and with writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis. Now that’s a lineup! With the tie in here though, the comic to pay more attention to is Justice League #12. They’re fighting a new villain and DC claims that the ending (last page) is so shocking it will have the comic community talking. Bring it!

The Outsiders #1 Looker #1

DC also has some regular number one issues coming out this week. National Comics Looker #1 brings Emily Briggs in her own solo comic. Check out the Looker’s first appearance in The Outsiders #1 from 1985. A new mini-series debuts from DC, Phantom Lady #1. Phantom Lady first appeared way back in Police Comics #1 in 1941. Her first appearance goes for a whopping $10,000! Well it also happens to be the first appearance of Plastic Man. He may have something to do with driving that price up! Phantom Lady doesn’t fly solo in this mini-series. Her partner in crime is Doll Man. His first appearance is in Feature Comics #27 from 1939. He’s not as worthy as Plastic Man, um we mean Phantom Lady’s first appearance. He gets only $4000 for his first.

Phantom Lady #1 Police Comics #1 Feature Comics #27

And finally but not least, check out Bongo Comics’ Lil Homer #1!

That’s it for this week. Be sure to scroll through the covers below. They made the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks Covers of the Week! Everything from Big Dog Ink to Amazing Spider-Man!

Until next week, Invest wisely.

IndieCreator Interviews Ron Fortier

PULP FICTION AND COMICS CONVO WITH WRITER RON FORTIER

Every once in a while I discover a new talent in writing this IndieCreator column.  In this case, it’s a gentleman and war veteran with a long, distinguished resume doing contract work and under his own Airship 27 publishing banner.  I was introduced to Ron by Rob Fitz, my most recent interview, who is attached to direct my micro-budget film BLESSID.  But you’ll find more about that later (in question 12, to be exact).  For now, put down your pencil and take heed of a REAL writer. Meet Ron Fortier – a creator force you’ve read many times before, but may not have known it!

1)   You are sort of a comics/pulp Renaissance man – you write, edit, publish, critique and even lecture on all things sequential art and pulp fiction related. You even write plays and screenplays. What is your true love … or do you have many creative mistresses?

(RF:)  I guess, when all is said and done, my true love remains comic writing.  There is really nothing else quite like it for me. The opportunity to meld my vision with that of a visual storyteller is always a rush and makes me feel like a kid every time I finish a new comic project.

2)    Your website is “Airship 27”. What exactly is “Airship 27” and “Airship 27 Productions”?

(RF:)  Airship 27 Productions is a publishing house created by yours truly and artist Rob Davis almost seven years ago to produce brand new novels and anthologies featuring public domain pulp heroes from the 1930s and 40s.  Since beginning operations we’ve grown to having over fifty titles in our current catalog.

3)    Where did you get your training or were you self taught?

(RF:)  Well, I do have a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, which proves I went to college. Chuckle. And while there, I did take various writing courses. But alas, back in my time comic scripting was considered less than legitimate literature and no one taught it.  So I learned on-the-job, if you will, with the aid of a tiny little booklet written by Nick Cuti called, “How To Write Comics,” and sold by the old Charlton Comics group for .50 cents.  Over the years I would later pick up how-to-titles from various outfits like Marvel and DC, but overall, again, it was learn by doing.

4)    What did you read as a child and young adult growing up?

(RF:)  I actually learned to read from comics and they opened my imagination at a very early age so that by the time I was ten, or eleven, I’d moved on to reading racy private eye paperbacks and adventure novels.  I discovered Edgar Rice Burroughs paperbacks while in high school and soon after reprints of the pulp heroes Doc Savage and the Shadow. By the time I graduated, I was hooked on all manner of fantastic lit from fantasy to sci-fi and horror.

5)   Favorite film, favorite graphic novel and favorite pulp fiction novel  … and why?

(RF:)  Easy on all three fronts:

  • Favorite movie is the original 1933 King Kong; a film so rich in imagination it explodes off the screen in every single scene.  The direction is taunt, the FX ground-breaking and the music score revolutionized music making in Hollywood.  Add to it a tragic tale of innocence lost and it makes me cry every single time I watch it.
  • Graphic novel is a little tougher, but I have to choose CAMELOT 3000 (though it began its life as a mini series from DC).  Writer Mike Barr took the iconic King Arthur legend and turned it on its ear into an amazing sci-fi epic unlike anything ever released before it.  Alan Davis’ artwork was jaw dropping beautiful. A true comic classic.
  • Finally, without a doubt, my favorite pulp novel was the first ever Doc Savage novel, MAN OF BRONZE by the great Lester Dent.  In that one book is all the action, thrills, colorful characters and exotic settings that would come to symbolize pulp fiction.  I’ve read lots of pulps since discovering that paperback reprint, but none ever wowed me like that one.

6)    What was your first “big break” in the industry?

(RF:)  My first published comic shorts appeared in Charlton Comics in the late 1970s.  Both were illustrated by my dear pal, artist Gary Kato. It was our first crack in the pro-door.  We later followed it up with a five issue mini-series called STREET-FIGHTER from Ocean Comics, a little outfit located inRhode Island.  That propelled me toSan Diegoin the 80s were I would land bigger gigs.

7)    Name the work – or works – that you have written that impresses people the most at cocktail parties?

(RF:)  My two and a half year run on Now Comics THE GREEN HORNET.  Up until that series, the character had not been seen in comics in over twenty years. It was easily the company’s most successful series.  Then shortly before leaving them, I wrote a five-issue Terminator series called THE BURNING EARTH which was illustrated by this new kid named Alex Ross.  It was his first comics work ever.  Wonder what ever happened to him?  Ha.

8)    What have you written that is absolutely fantastic that has not been published, filmed or theatrically staged yet? In other words, your greatest “undiscovered treasure”?

(RF:)  THE EIGHT WONDER OF THE WORLD, my movie screenplay that tells the story of how two World War One buddies, Meriem C. Cooper and Ernest Shoedstack started their own documentary company after the war and became filmmakers.  Years later, they would both end up at RKO and team up with special effects guru, Willis O’Brien to produce KING KONG.  Honestly, the story of their lives and how this movie got made is just as exciting as the picture itself, except its all true.  One of these days I hope to turn it into a graphic novel and hope it gets some attention.

9)    You’ve worked on books for the Hulk, Popeye, Rambo, the Terminator, Green Hornet and even Peter Pan. Which one would be last standing in a brawl? Which would you want to have your back in a foxhole. And which character do you admire the most?

(RF:)  Okay, so let’s get wacky here.  Last man standing would be Popeye. Nobody in this bunch could whip that one-eyed sailor man.  Who would I want with me in a foxhole?  Easy again, being a Vietnam vet myself, that would be Rambo.  I have so much respect for Green Berets, even the Hollywood kind.  And my personal hero is Britt Reid, the Green Hornet.  He’s a wealthy man with all the good things money can buy and yet his conscience won’t allow him to enjoy his life while criminals continue to victimize his city.  His donning the mask to disguise himself as an outlaw to battle them is not some foolish, cavalier gesture but a true sacrifice putting himself on the line for others. To me that’s what a hero is.

 10)    Tell us about your blog “Pulp Fiction Reviews”. How long have you been at this, and how much time do you devote to it each week? And oh yeah … read any great books lately?

(RF:)  Years ago a colleague told me the one thing I’d most likely have to give up when becoming a professional writer would be reading.  The logic being you simply can’t do both at the same time.  Not happy with that idea, I promised myself I would never stop reading, no matter how busy my life became and purposely started a review blog to make that happen.  It’s been up almost six year now and I’ve lost track of how many books I’ve reviewed in that time.  As for exceptional books thus far this year, let me strongly recommend two: “Destiny of Fu Manchu,” by William Patrick Maynard and “Dossouye – Dancers of Mulukau,” by Charles Saunders.  Both great reads.

11)    The late great comedian Johnny Carson once said in an interview that his epitaph would read: “Here’s Johnny!” As a writer, what will your epitaph say many, many years from today?

(RF:)  Hmm, I’d like to say, “Here Dreams a Happy Man.”

12)    You did a prequel for the indie cult Chinese action horror film “God of Vampires” called “Frank NG – Hired Gun”. The comic sold quite well on Comixpress. How did you get involved in that little project, and whatever happened with it?

(RF:)  I had the good fortune of meeting writer/producer/director Rob Fitz while attending my very first Dragon Con in Atlanta many, many moons ago.  Learning we were both fromNew Hampshire, we hit it off and he began to tell me all about this great little vampire movie he was making.  I loved the idea and suggested producing a short comic book prequel that he could use to market and promote the movie.  Rob gave me permission to go ahead with the idea and I wrote that 18-page script, then found an art team to bring it together.  Our penciler was Javier Lugo fromFlorida, our inker fromMexico Cityand our letterer was British. Talk about an international team. Anyway, we self-published it via ComicXpress for no other reason than to make it available to Rob.  He went on to purchase hundreds of copies and would sell them, along with movie tee-shirts, at his early screenings of the movie. I was happy to hear the comic went over extremely well with fans of the flick.  And as far as I know, it is still very much available at the ComicXpress site if anyone is interested in grabbing a copy.

13)   What are you working on today?

(RF:)  Now there’s a loaded question. I’m in the middle of my fifth Captain Hazzard.

At the same time I’m also committed to writing half a dozen pulp short stories for other publishers, to include Moonstone Books & Pro Se Productions. Plus, as ever, editing another half dozen books we at Airship 27 hope to get out before the end of the year.  Busy doesn’t begin to describe it.

14)   Tell us the truth − you’re never going to retire, are you? 😉

(RF:)  Hey, after working 30 years in a GE Factory (the day job) my wife and I actually did retire almost ten years ago now allowing me to devote all my time, when not with our six grand kids, to writing. And they have been the most ten productive years of my career.  I doubt seriously I could ever stop. Writing is in my blood.

Thanks Ron!

(RF:)  Thank you, Bob, this has been fun.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ends with ANNUAL #1, But Johns hints at more for Booster Gold & the gang

In big news…well, it’s big news if you’re me…Geoff Johns told DC’s blog that after the JLI annual effectively wraps up the series, BOOSTER GOLD will play a central role in the upcoming TRINITY WAR.

In the meantime, here’s co-writer’s GEOFF JOHNS and DAN DIDIO discussing next week’s JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 sets the stage for some major changes in the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe,” co-writer Geoff Johns teased to THE SOURCE. “Obviously, it’s the last issue of the series, but certainly not the last story for any of the members – especially Booster Gold who ultimately will once again be drawn into the center of the DC Universe as the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 start to change the course of the future.”

“I had a great time working with Geoff on this issue especially one as important as this,” continued DiDio. “It brings an end to certain stories and launches several characters into new and exciting directions.”

“Working with Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns was a great experience and presented me with something different to tackle in my career,” added artist Jason Fabok. “I had a great time drawing the JLI team in this last chapter of their story. What will come next for these characters? What big surprises await the Justice League?  It’s an exciting time to be a DC comics fan!”

“JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 introduces two new members, Olympian and Blue Beetle, who join just in time for the team to implode,” concluded editor Brian Smith. “Several established players quit and not everyone will survive. All this, plus a shocking glimpse into the future of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.”

Co-written by Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio and illustrated by Jason Fabok, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 goes on sale August 29.

Spencer & Rossmo bring A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

New series by Spencer and Rossmo from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – August 23, 2012 — BEDLAM, the new Image Comics series by Nick Spencer (MORNING GLORIES, THIEF OF THIEVES) and Riley Rossmo (GREEN WAKE, DEBRIS), is set in a city that has been terrorized by a maniacal killer and crime boss called Madder Red.

The killer has been rehabilitated and has reclaimed his given name, Filmore Press, but the city of Bedlam is still soaked with the blood and madness he left in his wake.

“It’s a scary world these characters live in. A desperate one. It’s brutal what we put them through,” says writer Spencer. “The shocks aren’t confined to the last page, they’re peppered throughout. There are a lot of ‘shift in your seat uncomfortably’ moments. You don’t get Riley Rossmo to draw your book and not heap on the horror and violence.”

Rossmo’s art is in a moody wash of muted tones, with shocks of stark red.

“Bedlam’s art is pulling a bit stylistically from my last three books,” said Rossmo. “I’m trying for a cleaner line, lots of spotted blacks, and strong well-designedcolor palettes. The Film ‘M’ and David Mazzucchelli are big visual influences. I’m super-happy with the pages I’ve finished so far.”

BEDLAM’s first issue is to be released on Halloween, and the creative team anticipate that it will be the first of many.

“There’s a long-form, big commitment story here, that we will hopefully tell for years to come,” said Spencer. “It’s like Morning Glories in that sense. The book’s not going to be around a little while then vanish. The goal here is to build a mythology around a modern American metropolis, with Madder Red as our guide. It’s exhilarating, starting down the path of something likethis.”

At 48 pages, BEDLAM #1 (AUG120461) is a double-sized introduction to a cityscape of murder, mayhem and mystery with a cover by Frazer Irving (Xombi) . It is available for pre-order now.

WITCH DOCTOR VOLUME 2: MAL PRACTICE ON CALL FOR NOVEMBER

Creators Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner respond to your otherworldly emergency with the sequel to the breakout medical horror hit WITCH DOCTOR, from Robert Kirkman’s Skybound imprint at Image Comics.   Occult physician Dr. Vincent Morrow, paramedic Eric Gast and supernatural patient Penny Dreadful return in WITCH DOCTOR: MAL PRACTICE  with a new infusion of tales to captivate and shock you.   Even the world’s leading expert in supernatural disease needs to unwind sometimes. But when Dr. Morrow wakes up with no memory of what (and who!) he did last night, is it a case of partying too hard or something more malignant?   “I’m glad people loved Witch Doctor volume one so much — but we’re barely getting warmed up!” said writer Seifert, adding, “Mal Practice has more monsters, more magic, more medicine and more peril, as Dr. Morrow has to treat a very different patient — himself! And like they say — doctors make the worst patients!”

“This story really ups the stakes and pushes the characters to new levels of desperation — after all, what’s a witch doctor to do when he’s his own best hope to survive?” said artist Ketner. “I’ve been waiting to draw some of the stuff in Mal Practice since the very beginning of Witch Doctor, and I’m relieved that we’re finally taking the bandages off for all to see!”   WITCH DOCTOR VOLUME 2: MAL PRACTICE #1 is the first issue of a new six-issue miniseries, with story by Brandon Seifert, art by Lukas Ketner and coloring by Andy Troy, arriving in stores November28th with 32 pages of gruesome and gory goodness ($2.99/FC/T).   Reading WITCH DOCTOR VOLUME 2: MAL PRACTICE will make you instantly understand why Robert Kirkman picked WITCH DOCTOR as Skybound’s first new original title, and why The A.V. Club diagnosed it “Terrifying, hilarious and above all, smart!” Critics and fans agree, once you’ve been infected by WITCH DOCTOR, there is no cure.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY covers THE WALKING DEAD season three

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY  is really living the comic genre lately. The reoprted the CW’s casting of THE HUNTRESS for new series, ARROW, based on GREEN ARROW. Then they revealed the new relationship between SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN. Now they’re showing off their upcoming WALKING DEAD covers.  Check these babies out!

This season is going to be about getting to know these two characters, and then waiting for their eventual confrontation that could destroy everything.”

SUPERMAN LOVES WONDER WOMAN?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY has shared another DC teaser. In this NEW 52 DC Universe, not only are Clark Kent and Lois Lane NOT a couple, but it looks like Superman and Wonder Woman will become the New 52’s “Power Couple”. Along with a look at JUSTICE LEAGUE #12’s sizzlingly super smoochy cover, they spoke to series writer and Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment, Geoff Johns.

Writer Geoff Johns hints that some event — possibly tragic — will impact every member of the Justice League, and cause Superman and Wonder Woman to seek solace in each other and move from super-powered colleagues to power couple. This is no one-issue stunt: “This is the new status quo,” says Johns, adding that the relationship will have a seismic impact on all the heroes and villains in the DC universe.

CW’s ARROW casts HUNTRESS

Looks like GREEN ARROW won’t be the only DC Comics character hitting the small screen. For at least a few episodes, he’ll be joined by THE HUNTRESS. According to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, The Huntress will be played by Australian TV actress Jessica De Gouw. This isn’t the first time on TV for either character, though these are new versions. SMALLVILLE featured a Green Arrow who headed the Justice League, and Huntress was the lead on the very short lived BIRDS OF PREY series.

Whilce Portacio returns to Image with new Creator Owned Project, NON-HUMANS

PLAYTHINGS COME TO LIFE IN NON-HUMANS

New ongoing series from Whilce Portacio, Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – August 21, 2012 — One of Image Comics’founders, Whilce Portacio, returns to creator-owned world with the new series NON-HUMANS, penned by Glen Brunswick (GRAY AREA, JERSEY GODS), to be published by Image Comics in October.

An otherworldly disease brought back to Earth by a NASA space probe has given inanimate objects like toys, dolls, and mannequins the ability to come to life, able to walk, talk, and speak — and to think for themselves. A new minority class called “Non-Humans,” the former objects take on part of the personalities of the people who used or even loved them.

“The toys are not only a newminority in our world, but because they come from us they are quite human–with all of the frailties, insecurities and desires we humans possess,” said writer Brunswick. “And some of these creatures can be very dark–it’s a world filled with toys that envy us, want to be more like us, and are willing to kill us if they can’t get what they want. What could be better than that?”

The varied personalities of the Non-Humans was part of the appeal for comics veteran Portacio (ARTIFACTS, Incredible Hulk). NON-HUMANS is Portacio’s first creator-owned comics since his original Wetworks series, published from first 1994 to 1996 and then relaunched in2006.

“It’s very exciting for me to get back on a creator-owned book,” said Portacio. “It took a long time waiting for the right one to come along that would really fire my imagination. I have the same boundless enthusiasm for NON-HUMANS that I had when Image Comics was first formed. I feel like there are no limits to what we can do with this story.”

NON-HUMANS is a full-color ongoing series starting in October. Issue #1 (AUG120465) is available for pre-order from the August issue of Previews. A five-page preview of NON-HUMANS #1 appears in ELEPHANTMEN #42, which was in stores on August 15.

DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

DC has shared a little bit about this month’s DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL, featuring BATMAN versus THE BLACK MASK. Here’s the write up from their Blog.
This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! First up is DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1.

“As a new member of the Batman group at DC Comics, it is a thrill working with Tony Daniel on DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1,” artist Romano Molenaar told THE SOURCE. “He knows exactly how to write for an artist which makes it a delight setting up the pages. Fans can expect fast-paced action and details all over the place as far as the art goes. Batman will need all of his physical and mental strength for this Annual and be ready for the return of one of his most diabolical villains!”

“The first DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL features the return of one of Batman’s most dangerous adversaries – the Black Mask!” added series editor Mike Marts. “Picking up from where readers last saw him in the ‘Night of the Owls’ storyline, gangster Roman Sionis has once again donned the maddening mask and formed his False Face Society. How will the Dark Knight combat this unique threat? And is there an even greater villain lurking in the shadows?”

Written by Tony S. Daniel and illustrated by Romano Molenaar, DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 flies into stores on August 29.

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for comic releases on 8-22-12

This week Marvel’s flagship character is reaching its 50th anniversary issue. It’s very odd how we’re not getting much fanfare about this. Amazing Spider-Man #692…No large quantity of variants (only 5 at last count), no huge news stories, no big press releases, notthing “BIG” pertaining to this awesome feat. Bet we get a big push right before release date on Wednesday though. The guess here for not showing much love for the 50th probably and most likely has to do with the fact that Spidey is only 8 issues from the “colossal” number 700. Marvel has already promised some serious storytelling leading up to that issue. Until then….Happy 50th Spidey!

Speaking of Spider-Man, Venom has been bringing it every month and this week with Venom #23 it doesn’t look like it will let up anytime soon from the awesome meter. This Venom issue promises a new era for our favorite Symbiote character which features an appearance of “The Monsters of Evil”. Sounds like fun! Featured in this issue is the artistry of new comer Thony Silas. Check out Thony’s first Spidey in the recent Amazing Spider-Man Ends of Earth.

Teen Titans #12 features the first appearance of Diesel into the new 52. Diesel’s first appearance came in Batgirl #5. Fantastic cover from InvestComics’ friend Phil Noto too!

Batman The Dark Knight #12 has the villain Scarecrow in Batman’s side again. Scarecrow’s been around for quite some time wreaking havoc on Bruce’s life, since 1941 to be exact. World’s Finest Comics #2 owns the Scarecrow’s first appearance. And what is up with the cover? Where is Batman’s batting helmet? Why isn’t Superman wearing umpire gear? They can get hurt! Better yet, Robin has no catcher protective gear, but who cares about him?

Flash #12 reintroduces the new 52 world to Glider. The “Golden” Glider first appeared in Flash #250 (1977) and the Glider appeared first appeared in The Flash #6.

Before Watchmen continues this week with Dr. Manhattan. Of course the doc’s first appearance was in Watchmen #1. And as said many of times in this column, if you do not own the original series or the trade of Watchmen…..well then you aren’t a comic collector or comic enthusiast.

IDW cranks out another Rocketeer book, this time with Rocketeer Cargo of Doom #1. Hard to fathom that the Rocketeer first appeared in 1982 and that his first “full” appearance is under $10! You’d probably get very lucky and pick up Starslayer #2 in some 50 cent long box if you look hard enough!

That’s it for this week. Be sure to scroll through the InvestComics’ Covers of The Week below.

See you next week. Invest wisely.

IDW brings back the DINOBOTS for New TRANSFORMERS Digital Miniseries

DINOBOTS enter the TRANSFORMERS PRIME world for the first time ever!

San Diego, CA (August 15, 2012) – IDW Publishing, Hasbro, Activision, and High Moon Studios are thrilled to welcome the launch of the new digital comic series: TRANSFORMERS: FALL OF CYBERTRON! Announced at Comic-Con International San Diego last month, and beginning today, this new series will offer fans an exclusive look at the story that precedes the explosive new game.

In the days leading up to the events of Activision and High Moon Studios’ TRANSFORMERS: FALL OF CYBERTRON video game, we see the origin of the fearsome DINOBOTS as they encounter a secret DECEPTICON plot and take on a slew of enemies including SHOCKWAVE and the INSECTICONS!

“It’s a lot of fun to have a chance to play in the sandbox of the Fall of Cybertron game. I’m lucky enough to get to write one of our Transformers ongoing comics, and edit the rest, but doing these stories in this setting… well, it’s a real blast!” said writer JOHN BARBER.

BARBER continued “I sat down with Dave Cravens, the head writer of the game at High Moon Studios, and we plotted out the whole comic one afternoon. It was great to get to work that closely with somebody so intimately involved in the game, so we could really make sure this comic actually fits in with the story the game is telling–and plays into the larger TRANSFORMERS mythology. Plus, anybody who knows me knows I love me some Dinobots, so it was a thrill to get to write them!”

Don’t miss TRANSFORMERS: FALL OF CYBERTRON, a prequel to the much-anticipated videogame, written by Barber (Transformers: Robots in Disguise) with art by Dheeraj Verma (Escape of the Living Dead)! Issues #2-5 will also include exclusive preview pages from TRANSFORMERS: THE ART OF THE FALL OF CYBERTRON, coming soon from IDW!

The series will run for six digital-only installments on a bi-weekly schedule, and will be available all digital platforms including Apple iOS, Android, and online.

TRANSFORMERS: FALL OF CYBERTRON ($0.99, 8 pages; full color) will be available in August in IDW’s Apple iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch®, apps – Transformers Comics and IDW Comics, and on the Web at read.idwpublishing.com. The series will also be featured in the Comics by comiXology platform for iOS, Android, Web and Kindle Fire, and Comics + by iVerse.

TRANSFORMERS PRIME – RAGE OF THE DINOBOTS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages; full color) will be available in November 2012.

One comic you should definitely look out for on the new comic shelf this week is Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories #1. An absolute “gimme” here as an InvestComics Hot Pick. Will this comic sell out quickly? Yes. See a second print? Yes. Does the main character look remarkably like a character that has been around for quite some time? Yes, but we will get past that when reading this book….right?

Marvel Comics makes a couple of promises this week (as they do often, but who’s paying attention?).  Amazing Spider-Man #691 is a MUST GET issue according to Marvel because it’s leading up to that number 700 issue. Marvel says that you will regret not buying this comic now because it’s going to mean so much later. Okay so you reeled us in, thanks Marvel! More Marvel Comics promises lie within the pages of Avengers #29. The promise here is to witness a “tie-in experience like you have never seen before!” What does this mean exactly?? Oh well, guess we’ll have to pick this up and see.

Marvel Comics are in pairs this week. Two promises, now two first appearances. Captain Marvel #2 introduces The Banshee Squadron while Daredevil #17 introduces the villain Coyote. You think Coyote is that old Epic character McFarlane drew? If you remember that, you’re showing your age. Wait a sec….

DC Comics Presents #12 introduces Kid Flash. The Kid’s first appearance is in Flash #110. DC’s Before Watchmen continues with Rorschach #1. And of course Rorschach’s first appearance is in the Watchmen #1.

IDW goes back to the vaults and collects Dave Gibbons’ old Doctor Who comics in Doctor Who Dave Gibbons Treasury Edition #1. This is very neat for Dave Gibbons fans and Doctor Who enthusiasts alike. If you’d like to search for those original comic books from the legend, check out his first Doctor Who book from 1979’s Doctor Who Magazine #1.

IDW continues with their vault visits with Classic Popeye #1, collecting the original Popeye comics from 1948. It’s funny how IDW didn’t change a thing regarding the original number one cover to the reprinted edition, all but changing 2 things. But one fact that is not going to change is that the 1948 Popeye #1 is around $600.

Number one independent comics are aplenty this week. Homecoming #1 from Aspen Comics. A creation from the late Michael Turner. The Adventures of a Comic Con Girl from Antarctic Comics looks like a fun read. Dan The Unharmable #1 is from the awesome creative mind of award winning David Lampham. And finally from Arcana, check out Curse of the Cortes Stone #1.

A quick little going away note here…..

Bob Heske, screenwriter, author and of Heske Horror AND major contributor to InvestComics has a movie project in the works. It’s called Blessid. The IndieGogo project needs some funding and has some major talent attached to the project. Reader’s can find a fantastic interview right HERE with the Director Rob Fitz. Check out more information on this fabulous project with the full cast right HERE. Contribute as little as $10 to get this project off the ground!

That’s it for this week fans! Be sure to scroll through the InvestComics Covers of the week below! What covers do you think should have made the cut? Let’s hear it!

Bleeding Ink Productions Announces Patriot

What would you do if you were a super-hero with God-like powers and had only 6 weeks to live?

Bleeding Ink Productions launched a Kick Starter project on July 27, 2012 to produce a new mini-series called Patriot.

Patriot is a 4 issue mini-series that is unlike anything you’ve ever read. It tells the personal and emotional story of a super-hero that attempts to tie up all of his lose ends before a brain tumor takes his life. These include his obligations to protecting the world as well as those he has with his family.

Download a free 14-page preview from Dropbox and you can watch a video trailer if you clickonthislink

In order to produce Patriot, Bleeding Ink Productions has set a goal of $4,000.  The money will be used to pay for some the artist fees to produce over 60 pages and five (5) wrap-around covers.  It still costs a lot to produce a comic of this quality, and the actual cost will be over $8,000.  Since Bleeding Ink is a new publisher, the goal was set low as a realistic achievement.  Bleeding Ink will cover the printing costs, coloring, and additional expenses.  Hopefully, people will enjoy what they see and pledge so the project will reach its goal and beyond.  In additional to the comic itself, many rewards are available based on the amount pledged.  Rewards include special editions of The Patriot comic, Bleeding Ink apparel, more great books produced by Bleeding Ink and having yourself drawn as a character in an issue.

Special editions of Patriot will only be available through this Kickstarter project.  With only a few days left for pledges to be made, please pre-order Patriot soon to get your copy!

Founded by Jesse Grillo, Bleeding Ink Productions is a new publisher based out of Hollywood, California. The company creates unique, hard-line stories that stand out from anything you’ve ever read.

Jesse Grillo is a writer that has worked in film as a screenwriter, published a book of poetry, written over 20 comic books and is currently working on his first novel.

IDW Prepares Judge Dredd Reprint Program

Plans for Classic Material Expand to Monthly Series

[Judge Dredd Image]

San Diego, CA (August 8, 2012) – Following their Comic-Con announcement of the new ongoing JUDGE DREDD comic’s creative team, IDW Publishing is proud to announce expanded and refined plans to offer new editions of beloved Judge Dredd material as well.

Once again showing a willingness to tailor books to fan requests, IDW’s first hardcover collection of classic Judge Dredd comics, JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND, will first appear as a fully black-and-white edition, presenting crisp, clean, and stunning pages of Brian Bolland artwork as they first appeared. Bolland’s amazingly detailed linework will be on full display in this oversize hardcover edition.

“Fans have been very vocal to us about wanting to first see Bolland’s amazing pages in pristine black-and-white,” said IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and JUDGE DREDD editor Chris Ryall. “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimate Collections presented the original Eastman/Laird stories in gorgeous black and white, and that’s what fans have told us they’d like to see here at the start, too. We’re happy to give them what they want, especially since Brian Bolland’s art is so stunning even without color.”

Owing to the TMNT model again, IDW is also preparing to give the fans of colored art a chance to experience this artwork in full color as well. “In the spring, we’ll do as we did with Classic Doctor Who and TMNT Classics, and release the best Dredd stories as monthly color comics,” continued Ryall. “So anyone who loved what we did with that material—applying the most modern coloring techniques to these beloved pages—will also be able to re-experience these Dredd tales in vibrant color.”

Charlie Kirchoff, who has done such a masterful job re-coloring Doctor Who stories by Dave Gibbons, John Ridgway, will tackle Bolland’s Judge Dredd material for the monthly comics. This ongoing 32-page comic series will also see all-new colors applied to classic work by Carlos Ezquerra, and many other fan-favorite artists.

“I first experienced Judge Dredd in the form of the Eagle Comics reprints from the early ‘80s, so it’ll be fun to pay that forward and let a new generation of readers also experience that material in monthly color comics, albeit with the benefit of 21st century coloring and printing techniques,” Ryall said.

IDW has other archival Judge Dredd projects planned to complement the full slate of 2000 AD/Rebellion books, in the form of hardcovers that collect the work of other beloved Judge Dredd artists, TREASURY EDITION-sized comics, and some other special things other than the new ongoing series, which launches in November alongside the Brian Bolland collection. Whatever your preference for Judge Dredd material, there’s no doubt justice will be coming your way in late 2012 and beyond!

JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND ($49.99, 248 pages, B/W, HC) will be available in November 2012. Diamond order code: APR12 8054. ISBN 978-1-61377-488-5.

The Birth of a NEW Hero, The Birth of Starlex!

Alexis Starling was a Photography and Art student at Los Angeles University. One evening she was up near the Hollywood sign taking some pictures for her portfolio when

she noticed a shooting star. She snapped away as the star came closer, “…the star fell faster and faster, she gazed up at it frozen, she could not move. Faster and

faster the star fell, closer and closer until… silence. For that split second there was nothing. Time stood still. As the star fused with her body they became one.

She fell to the ground, her body sparkling like the night sky above…” She absorbed the power of the star and became Starlex!

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for comic releases on 8-8-12

Before we head into this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks, there needs to be a quick “clarification” if you will.

In today’s collectors market, things have changed mightily. The 80’s and 90’s were driven by the speculation market. The speculation market is a thing of the past and the wiser investor (collector) has emerged. So why do certain companies still insist on releasing 8 or 10 different variants of a comic is a puzzlement (but not that hard to figure out either). While they may sell some copies, it seems they are catering to the collector of the past in which they stand to make a few extra bucks. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Newsflash, Marvel/DC and all the rest of the comic companies are in a business to make money. That said do you know anyone that is buying up all 10 variants of a number one issue or a “special” issue? Didn’t think so. Regarding the collector, the cream of the crop for any variant is the ratio. Get your hands on a 100 to 1 cover for cover price or for $5 and NOW you’re talking. Paying an exorbitant amount for a comic that just came out of a box from the UPS truck is absolutely absurd. A variant cover of a new say…Marvel Now book for $200 is a huge waste of money. Get that first appearance of a character that is already in the mainstream, a first work from a legend in the industry or maybe just a gut that is telling you, “yes this comic is undervalued and needs to be in my collection.”

So why are we starting this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks on this note? Well the InvestComics Hot Picks articles have gotten a lot of play over the past few weeks with many comic shops across the states (and Worldwide) posting the article every week. A couple of shops have declined to do so because they simply don’t believe in the “Investment” portion of the comic collecting world. There is ONE burning question that needs to be asked of that “non-believer”, but we’ll come back to that.

Anyone that has followed InvestComics for the past 6 years or even the past year knows that this is purely done out of an Entertainment value and never has claimed to send your children off to college with its recommendations or speculation. When InvestComics first arrived onto the scene in 2006, it was taken very seriously in regards to what to buy, sell or hold. As the years went on the entire process evolved. It became “InvestComics – Your Entertainment Investment Guide” It no longer was “InvestComics – Your Investment Guide”. Things change, the realization of the market was no longer about buying each color of the Legends of the Dark Knight #1 or more recently the 7 different Spawn covers. It became about the wiser collector. It became about being aware that a first appearance of a new character is coming up in a comic book this week or an artist/writer making his/her debut, knowing that the Jack O’ Lantern will be appearing in the new Venom comic this week, but his first appearance was in 1981 with some creative team star power. Will Jack O’ Lantern’s first appearance ever amount to anything value wise? Probably not, but this is fun. It’s fun because the collector of today can make their own decisive decision if they’d like to search their local comic shop for that first appearance within a comic book that has probably been sitting in the shops back issue boxes for the last 15 years or so…….which brings us back to the comic shop and that burning question. If one does not believe in the “investment” value of a comic book, then sell that 100 to 1 ratio for cover price. And more importantly, get the comics off of your wall and sell those for cover price too. Comics are a business, don’t kid yourselves with “morals” now trying to sell the whole “comics are for reading” stuff. That only goes so far. This is a business. Bills need to be paid, lights need to stay on, rent needs to be paid and new comics need to be bought. Bottom line here, InvestComics would only help sell comics on your wall (that have dust collecting on them), back issue in the long boxes and also the new shipment on your shelf every Wednesday. A collector buying a first appearance, a back issue, a new comic off of the shelf that they may not have thought of buying before or possibly adding to their subscription list due to the InvestComics Hot Picks article raising awareness to “it” is good for your business. So if you’d be so kind to reach up there and get that Incredible Hulk #181 for 35 cents I’d appreciate that.

Now back to business! Here are your InvestComics Hot Picks for the comics coming out this Wednesday and more…..

Valiant will be coming back with one of their comics from 1992. Archer & Armstrong #1 comes at us this week with the original number one debuting 20 years ago! Look at the lineup here on that original number one issue; writers Bob Layton Sr. and Jim Shooter, Penciler and cover artist Barry-Windsor-Smith! Awesome stuff here folks!

And speaking of awesome, Mirage Studios in 1985 released a “Micro-Series” called Raphael. The Micro-Series was a first of its kind because it was essentially a One Shot, but with a wacky name. A classic Iconic TMNT’s cover from Kevin Eastman gets replicated for the new IDW Color Classic here. The cover price for the New IDW comic is $3.99. The classic original 1985 magazine sized can be bought for about $10. Need we say more here?

Marvel gives Gambit his own comic this week in his self titled Gambit #1. Although a character with a large following, Gambit always seemed to miss his mark for some reason (no pun intended). He’s a fantastic team player, but a solo comic? Not sure how long this will last. Gambit’s first appearance for many years was thought to be in Uncanny X-Men #266 (1990) with another iconic cover from Andy Kubert and written by legend Chris Claremont. So where would Gambit’s first appearance be then you ask? That would be Uncanny X-Men Annual #14. So you think that his first appearance in the annual would be the one for your collection right? Nope. The Annual price for the “first appearance” is merely a $14 buy. The Uncanny X-Men #266 is a $60 buy. Huh? Well that’s as bad as the cameos of Wolverine and Venom and countless other characters with their “cameos”, but this is a debate for another day. You’d figure the first time we EVER SEE the character THAT would be the first appearance and the book to own right? Nope. Okay said this is a debate for another day……moving on.

Jack O’ Lantern appears within the pages of Venom #22. Good ol’ Jack first appeared in Machine Man #19 (1981). You talk about a creator lineup?? This is a beauty! Writer Tom DeFalco, Penciler/Inker Steve Ditko with cover artist Terry Austin and Frank Miller?!? Wow, now this is nice! So if that isn’t enough to grab your appetite for $20, how about that this Jack O’ Lantern character goes on to become the second Hobgoblin? We’ll take the creators on this one for a reason to buy!

A few number one issues to check out this week on your new comic book shelves, Anti #1 from 12 Gauge Comics with a nice creative team coming on board for that one, Idolized #1 from Aspen Comics with a variant cover from legend Arthur Adams, Thunda #1 from Dynamite Entertainment and finally, check out a #0 issue from Dark Horse Comics called Creep.

As always, scroll through the InvestComics Hot Picks covers of the week below!

See you next week!

Invest wisely.

IndieCreator Interviews Rob Fitz

Talkin’ Horror, Immortality and Zombie Chicks with Blessid Director Rob Fitz

Makeup and special effects savant Rob Fitz has a long and impressive resume on IMDB with credits on such films as The Perfect Storm, The Fighter, Edge of Darkness, The Grown Ups, Fever Pitch, Meet Joe Black and Jumanji.

Rob took the director’s helm for the critically acclaimed Chinese vampire horror/action film God of Vampires which he made for $23,000 (and which he also wrote). HorrorNews.net raved  “God of Vampires is exactly the kick in the ass the vampire genre does need” and Dread Central gushed “A fun, bloody action/horror hybrid that actually presented us with a different kind of bloodsucker for once (always a good thing) and knew exactly what it was doing.” The film fared well on the film festival circuit, received a limited theatrical run, gained distribution, and is quickly becoming a cult classic.

Rob’s latest indie gig is directing a micro-budget feature in Massachusetts called Blessid which films in the Fall. Recently, Rob sat down to talk to us about what it’s like working on big budget films in and around Boston; prepping for his next project about suicide, immortality and forgiveness; and splattering blood on zombie calendar pinup girls.

1) How did you get into the film business? What is your training and background?

(ROB:)  I went to film school at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and when I left school I became a production assistant. I quickly got an opportunity to do makeup on an independent film and became a makeup artist. Most of my training has been hands on.

 2) You’ve got an impressive resume on IMDB. What film was the most fun and which was the most difficult to work?

(ROB:)  I would say that working on “Inkubus” with Robert Englund was a great time as I got to work with a horror icon and engineer some amazing fx sequences. The hardest film other than my own film “God of Vampires” was probably “The Surrogates” with Bruce Willis. I had to do some prosthetics very quickly and it was very challenging.

3) What films have you worked on recently?

(ROB:) Last year I worked on “Ted” and more recently worked on a big film with Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds called “RIPD”.

4) Tell us about BLESSID.

(ROB:) Blessid is a film that embodies what an indie project should be. It’s a very personal, intimate, and dark portrait of a person tormented by her past. The interesting part about it is the supernatural elements in the story that are metaphors for aspects of her life and state of mind. Ultimately the film is about forgiving yourself which I find interesting. It’s a powerful message that I think should be told.

5) Tell us about the team you are bringing on board.

(ROB:)  Because I have a lot of experience on films I have the ability to draw from a great resource of professional friends and colleagues. Silas Tyler shot my first film and he and I have a bond that can only be established working on a movie set under harsh conditions. Kurt Bergeron, the production designer, did my first film too and we have the same bond. The makeup and wardrobe people are both professionals whom I’ve worked with for years. Bob Heske, the Writer/Producer of Blessid has also brought in Paul Speziale as Assistant Director and Line Producer and Iris Tsing as the Producer of Distribution and Marketing (Iris manages the unofficial Fan Page and website for actor Brandon Routh). The crew will be a tight, passionate group!

6) Who are some of the actors who will be involved?

(ROB:)  We have 4 actors who have signed Letters of Interest and they bring some serious acting chops to the set. I’ve seen David Fine in some movies (The Pursuit of Happyness, Rent, Patch Adams) and he’s a proven veteran that’s acted with A-List actors like Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Ed Harris. Rachel Kerbs I just saw in the film “Splinter” and thought she was awesome, a real talented actress that is perfect for the lead in Blessid. We’ve also got two other experienced actors in Gene Silvers and Chris DiVecchio who have impressive resumes for film and TV.

7) What other films would you compare BLESSID to?

(ROB:)  I can’t think of a film it directly compares to because it is unique and when I visualize it, that vision is unique as well. I can say that the despair in the film that is prevalent with the main character reminds me of the film “The Virgin Suicides”.

 8) If you could do makeup any film, what would it be?

(ROB:)  Actually I would love to work on “The Walking Dead” series… right up my alley.

 9) If you could direct the re-make of any film, what would it be?

(ROB:)  I’m for the most part against remakes unless the film was bad to begin with and you can do something good with it. That being said, if I had to do one it would be a remake of Lucio Fulci’s flawed but brilliant classic “Zombie”. It’s iconic and there a lot you could do with it!

10) As a horror effects guy, what is the Halloween season like for you?

(ROB:)  It’s crazy, everyone knows I do fx now and wants me to do their makeup… I have a lot of fun though! I love it!

11) What is the coolest gig you’ve worked on in the past year?

(ROB:)  Probably a film with Eric Roberts and Michael Berryman called “Self Storage”. I cut a person’s knee cap out and Roberts fist bumped me after the successful effect. Those veteran actors were impressed!

12) What other projects are you currently involved in that you’d like our readers to know about?

(ROB:)  I have been working on a fun little side project creating a calendar for 2013. It’s the 2013 Zombie Pinup Calendar! Check out our link on Kickstarter.

Thanks Rob! Hope you survive it through Halloween chaos, Zombie Pinup Calendar and directing Blessid!

The artwork, showing Spidey demonstrating his awesome new powers on the Hulk, is now the single most valuable piece of American comic ever sold at auction.

“This is an this earth-trembling cover illustration and an equally magnificent price,” said Todd Hignite, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. “McFarlane’s art brims with the raw energy that sky-rocketed McFarlane to the top of the industry and, now, the top of the auction world.”

The artwork was sold — along with McFarlane’s original art for Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1990), which brought $358,500 — as part of the first tranche of the Shamus Collection of Modern Masterworks, a unprecedented collection of late-1980s and early 1990s original comic book art put together by Martin Shamus, owner of a comics and memorabilia shop on Long Island.

The Heritage auction, which also features the Doug Schmell/Pedigree Comics.com Collection, most of which earlier in the day realized over $3.7 million, and should come in closer to $4 million once the auction has finished.

“The auction is on track to break $9 million and become the single highest grossing comic and comic art auction in history,” said Hignite. “We’re thrilled with the results and especially thrilled for Martin Shamus, who had the foresight and good taste to acquire these pieces more than two decades ago.”
