Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for 10-3-12.

This past week we all read about Stan Lee getting a pacemaker for the ol’ ticker. Everyone here at InvestComics wishes Stan Lee a speedy recovery! We all look forward to seeing you back on the convention circuit! Get well Stan!

InvestComics has been around now for 6 years. Wow, seems like yesterday the free InvestComics’ magazines were going out to the Ebay winners and also sitting on some comic shop counters. Ah, the good old days! Okay enough reminiscing. A few days ago a new exclusive InvestComics article appeared in the newly released Mancave Playbabes digital magazine, issue #3 (October). You can buy it on the InvestComics website right HERE or go to the Mancave Playbabes website right HERE. It’s an honor to be involved with such an upscale product and also an honor that InvestComics has found an Exclusive home as well. Mancave Playbabes saw the InvestComics product and recognized it enough to have a regular monthly column within the magazine. Look for more news concerning the MC/IC team-up!

New York Comic Con 2012 is 11 days away! Being that this is the third consecutive year that InvestComics will be attending as press; the excitement is as though it was the first. This doesn’t get stale at all. Do yourself a favor and visit the convention for at least one day if at all possible. The experience is like being at Disney, but with a different kind of fulfillment. It helps the inner geek more so because it’s for the adults rather than for the kids. Yes weird isn’t it, a comic book convention NOT for children? Yes times have changed.

As teased on the InvestComics Facebook page, InvestComics will do some cool things in relation to YOU the fans and tomorrow we’ll be releasing a cool little news piece that YOU the fan can get involved in. But be sure to be on top of it because there are a limited number of spots! More coming down the pike from the NYCC trip, but that’ll have to wait until we get back. Cool stuff coming!

Let’s get started with the “Zero-less” DC comics InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for this week. Yippee, no more Zero issues!

So what will DC comics do for an encore after what seemed like weeks and weeks of those Zero issues? Well you can start with getting the lame character Penguin back into the mix in Detective Comics #13. Yes that’s right, the Penguin is a lame character, let’s all stop pretending like we really care about him. But maybe, just maybe we’ll get a different spin on him from one of the better writers out there in the comic industry; Mr. John Layman. Of course we all know John from the Image Comics CHEW series, but do we know that John originally had his hands on a Batman comic from 2002? Yes he did, really. Check out Batman/Deathblow: After the Fire #1, you’ll see John Layman as the Editor of that comic. How cool is that!? Encore…..encore!

Okay want more from DC this week? How about Stormwatch #13? Of all the comics to reintroduce Jack ‘The King’ Kirby’s Demon into the New 52 “modern time setting”, it has to be Stormwatch? Okay. Jack Kirby first introduced us to Etrigan the Demon back in 1972. This was and IS essentially Jack Kirby’s character, having his paws all over this comic as Penciler, Cover Artist and Writer. So do yourself a favor and buy the 1972 comic to see a master at work and to own a nice first appearance of a character that is getting reintroduced in today’s “New 52”. Encore…..encore!

Want MORE from DC Comics this week? Tough crowd! Okay how about Action Comics #13? So what to talk this issue up about you ask? How about the cool artistry of Travel Foreman? That’s a start. How about the return of Krypto? Yes now that’s neat! The return of a dog with a cape! YAY for comic books! Superman’s best friend first appeared in Adventure Comics #255 WAY back in 1955. Wow that’s an old dog!! Hold on, let’s get the calculator out, be right back…………………………………….Okay so the age of Krypto here is 399. Not bad! Must be the healthy dog food Clark gives him.

So moving away from Crypto the dog, we find something here just as old here on InvestComics Comic Hot Picks and that’s Marvel’s absence from the list. Not anymore true believers! (Thanks Stan!).

So what does Marvel have to offer up this week that’s worth a mention? How about we have some fun first? It’s always about business! Not really, but that sounded like a nice way to ease into this.

XMenUncanny X-Men #19 presents fans with a kissy kissy romantic cover this week. When first seeing this, it got me thinking about ALL of those romantic poses and kissy covers over the years for the X-Men titles. So I set out and found a bunch of romance for the InvestComics fans. That’s right! Scroll through many X-Men titles, related titles and promo’s pertaining to the art of LOVE from the images below. See don’t say InvestComics never looks out for ya…..

Amazing Spider-Man #695 brings the Hobgoblin back into Peter’s tormented life. All leading up to the Amazing Spider-Man #700 which will probably make headline news for the “shock” that it will bring….BUT things will settle down and go back to normal, won’t they? Hobby’s first appearance is in Amazing Spider-Man #238 (1983). This amazing (no pun intended) collector’s issue is not only the debut of one of the elite villains within Spidey’s rouge gallery, but also an abundance of creative talent attached here! Here’s the lineup, writer Roger Stern, penciler John Romita Jr. and a cover by Romita Jr. AND Romita Sr.!! This comic needs to be in your collection if it’s not already there, which it should be.

On from the topic of awesomeness to lame and then back to awesomeness. Follow that? Okay so moving on from the topic of Amazing Spider-Man #238 we come to the lame duck this week called Spaceknights #1. This comic collects Spaceknights #1 & 2 from 2000. Wow this is lame. Lame on many levels, but the most glaring and obvious reason is that Spaceknights from 2012 (pinup? mention?) nor the old 2000 miniseries gives the one character that is excluded from the Spaceknights books and that is THE Spaceknight himself ROM. ROM is awesomeness. You see, Marvel cannot include ROM for legal reasons, but can use Spaceknights because they own that. Who cares?? ROM is the prize here. If Disney can buy Marvel Entertainment for 4 Billion dollars, there has to be a way to pry ROM away. Get ROM back Disney! Imagine this, ready for this? A ROM Pixar movie!! YES!!

Well It looks like we’ll all witness the demise of our favorite blind lawyer Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil this week in Daredevil End of Days. And if it’s any dead giveaway or indication of who is responsible for his death from this cover, it’s Bullseye! Bullseye is THE villain within his rogue gallery. Yes Kingpin is cool, but Bullseye, he’s the thorn that forever lives in his side. Check out the guy who sends Matt to his maker in his first appearance in Daredevil #131 (1976). And to sweeten the debut of Bullseye the story is written by Marv Wolfman.

And finally from Marvel, Avengers vs. X-Men #12 wraps up. Yes hooray.

There are two number one issues to look for this week; Non-Humans #1 from Image Comics and the soon to be megahit Robyn Hood #1 from Zenescope Entertainment. Zenescope recognizes the need for more bad ass female leads and they may well have it!

Thanks all, see you next week. Invest wisely.

Grant Morrison announces MULTIVERSITY for 2013. 1st story line includes the return/debut of a Ted Kord Blue Beetle

Fans attending MorrisonCon in Las Vegas this weekend were treated to a very special announcement this morning.

After years of speculation, anticipation and expectation, DC Entertainment is proud to confirm that Grant Morrison’s love letter to superhero comics, MULTIVERSITY, will be hitting stores in late 2013. Morrison, the comic book shaman and superstar author of ACTION COMICS and BATMAN, INCORPORATED has created a series that will not only define the Multiverse for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, but will also provide a handful of new worlds, concepts, heroes and villains for comic fans to enjoy.

MULTIVERSITY is an 8-issue series comprising 6 one-shots and a two-part conclusion with each issue featuring a 38-page lead story followed by an 8-page backup. Each issue takes place on a different parallel world from the main DC Earth and functions as a number one issue. Each world in the Multiverse publishes comic books about the heroes on the OTHER worlds. Once the characters realize this, they then unite to respond to the villains!

Additionally, each universe (which have been brewing in Morrison’s mind for years) will open up an endless series of worlds and realities for future writers and creators to use, expand upon and enjoy.

Below, take a first look at MULTIVERSITY by checking out a piece of art from PAX AMERICANA #1. Illustrated by the legendary Frank Quitely, PAX AMERICANA takes the original Charlton Comics characters and presents them in a way that’s both new and familiar at the same time.

IndieCreator: Interviews Andy Coughlan

IndieCreator interviews Andy Coughlan

Crowdfunder/Web Shopping Czar Andy Coughlan and “Help Me Fund It”

All right, everyone who likes disturbing movies with buckets of blood, raise your hand. Good. That’s all the guys in the room. Now, everyone who likes shopping online … okay, that’s all the ladies. Everyone happy? Eureka! We may have found the best two complementary things since … gosh, peanut butter and chocolate!

Announcing “Help Me Fund It” − a nifty crowd sourcing site that lets you fund your favorite film or game while shopping at great stores online. In short, you help an indie project while you help yourself.  Which now makes it very easy to explain to your wife why you bought that $400 tailgater grill on Amazon (“Honey, I was doing it to support a documentary about children who have their baby teeth stolen.”). Suddenly, you’re not a self-serving bastard … you’re a sensitive metrosexual. Sound good? Hold it, Big Fella. Put down your wallet. Let’s get through the interview first …

1)    Who is Andy Coughlan? Tell us about your background.

(AC:)  My background is mainly in Web Design and Marketing.  Until a few months ago I was a Marketing Communications manager for a Medical Devices manufacturer. Now, I’m a freelancer drawing on my experience building web sites and doing MarCom.

I’m also a bit of a screenwriter and filmmaker, which is where the inspiration for Help Me Fund It (HMFI) came from. I’ve made a few short films, written various spec scripts and edited a couple of low budget feature films.

2)    Help Me Fund It sounds like a simple idea. How hard was it to implement?

(AC:)  The site wasn’t too hard to implement. I’d spent some time in the last few years tinkering with affiliate marketing to try to fund some short films. In the process I built up a large pool of merchants that I could work with. Once I’d had the idea for HMFI, it was quite straightforward to code the site, which I did mainly over the Christmas 2011 break.

3)    For those who are unfamiliar with Help Me Fund It, pitch it to us in a few short paragraphs.

(AC:)  It’s essentially a cashback web site with a twist. Most cashback web sites offer users special links to click through to various merchants and online stores; when the user clicks on these links, they get back the commission from anything they buy.

Help Me Fund It takes the idea one step further by allowing the user to choose a creative project to which their commission is donated.

4)    What are some of the retailers you have on board?

(AC:)  Amazon is the most popular retailer, but we have hundreds, with the likes of Waterstones, HMV, Dorothy Perkins and Currys in the UK and Skechers, Ticketmaster, Fathead and Mattel in the US.

5)    What other ones will you be adding soon?

(AC:)  We’re adding new merchants all the time, although it’s usually a case of “wait and see” who turns up. I’m hoping to get more US merchants on there in the next few weeks.

6)    What was your “Ah-Ha!” moment when you came up with the concept?

(AC:)  The concept came about more through frustration than anything else. As I say, I’d been tinkering with Affiliate Marketing for a couple of years and hadn’t had a lot of success. Various projects had fallen by the wayside because I just couldn’t get the traffic to the sites.

I’d also been looking at Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, and saw quite a few of my friends try it and not get very far because they couldn’t find anyone willing to donate money, especially as, at the time, the recession was just really starting to bite.

At the same time, I was reading more and more about how Internet shopping was taking off big time. So it struck me that there might be a gap in the market for a Kickstarter type funding site that didn’t rely on people having to go out and find donors. If people are shopping online for things that they need – clothing, groceries etc. – why not get them to help as well?

7)    Explain how you came up with your icon — the lightbulb with “IT” against a purple backdrop.

(AC:)  The logo was designed by my friend, David Sturgeon, so I can’t claim any credit for it. We tried various ideas that were based around money, which made more sense as to the purpose of the site, but at the same time made it look like we were in the business of simply giving out money, which we are, but only after a bit of effort on the part of the project owners to sell the concept and got people to use the site.

So instead I decided to use the light-bulb idea to reinforce the creative aspects of the projects that the site was designed for.

8) What were your biggest obstacles in getting Help Me Fund It off the ground?

(AC:)  The biggest obstacle has been getting people to use the site. I was somewhat surprised with the apathy that the site met with when it was first launched. Apart from a few friends, no-one seemed particularly interested. It’s been quite a long, slow struggle to build up a following and get people to use the site.

I think a lot of people were scared of being seen to be the first, which is understandable. Also, because visitor numbers were relatively low, those brave enough to put their project on the site weren’t earning a lot of money. I think the most any project has earned so far is around £20 ($30), which doesn’t sound a lot, but when you consider that was done with only about fifteen people actually using the site before they shopped, the potential to earn more is definitely there.

9)    How are you using Social Media to create a buzz?

(AC:)  I’m using Twitter quite heavily to promote the projects on the site and remind people to use the site before they shop.

10) What are your immediate and long-term plans to enhance the site?

I’ve just added the Help Me Fund It widget that I hope people will embed into their web pages and blogs. This provides a quicker and easier way for people to click through to the merchants. I’m also looking to create an Android and iPhone app as well in the near future along with some other useful utilities for the project owners to use to help them promote their project on the site.

11) Help Me Fund It supports creative projects only whereas other popular crowd funding sites are all over the map. Why the focus on arts and creatives?

I just wanted to give the site a bit of focus, really. Also, knowing that it might not be generating as much money as people could get through Kickstarter and its ilk, I figured that smaller projects would be the main audience to start with: short films, community theatre, individual artists and photographers etc. As the site grows, so I’m hoping the scope of the projects on there will grow too.

12) Are you a creative yourself, or just a visionary?

Yeah, I’m definitely a creative type. Hopefully a bit of a visionary too! I spend most of my spare time creating stuff; writing, designing, coding and filming. I’m currently in the middle of rewriting a spec fantasy screenplay, and I’m hoping to take part in the Fifty Kisses project that’s going on at the moment.

13) Last question, what can our readers do to a) post a project or b) follow you on the web and support projects?

I’ve tried to make posting projects as easy as possible on the site. There’s no need even to create a new account as such, it’ll work with your Twitter, Facebook or Google+ account.

If you’re interested in keeping up with the latest developments, you can follow us on Twitter (@Help Me Fund It) and on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/Help Me Fund It).

There’s also the widget – even if you don’t have an active project on Help Me Fund It, you can still help promote projects by embedding the widget in your web site or blog.

And last of all, if you’re shopping online, don’t forget to check out the site to see if you can help out the projects. It’s simple to do, just support the project and then use our links to click through to your shopping destination.

Thanks Andy. What a great concept! I encourage everyone to check out the site and buy yourselves something really good. Cheers!

This week the new Judge Dredd film (Dredd 3D) opened and InvestComics wants to send out a little reminder to fans that may have missed this, but the composer of the film; Paul Leonard-Morgan was interviewed on InvestComics. It was an extensive/detailed Interview that covered everything in Mr. Leonard-Morgan’s career from music acts like Snow Patrol to composing a film. Fantastic stuff here folks. DC Comics continue their rampage of Zero issues, so without any further ado……

[scrollGallery id=167]

The flagship character of DC gets his zero treatment this week. In Superman #0 Jor-El learns about the imminent destruction of Krypton. This may fall into the who cares category, but then again as these zero issues come out, there seems to be a lot more of the “eh’” factor coming in. Superman first appeared in…….well if you don’t know this, close the browser you’re reading this on and go watch some Adventure Time.

Savage Hawkman #0 and Flash #0 share a similarity this week, both of them first appeared in the same book. That comic is Flash Comics #1 from 1940. A cool book to own because you get a two for the price of one deal!

Teen Titans #0 main focus will be on the Tim Drake origin, but do we really care about Tim anymore? So let’s look for the debut of the Teen Titans instead. This happened all the way back in The Brave and the Bold #54 (1964). An investment worth looking into as oppose to the first Tim Drake.

Another nice affordable first appearance issue would be Firestorm #1 (1978) to coincide with the Fury of Firestorm #0 issue. The debut of Firestorm was accompanied by names like Al Milgrom, Joe Rubinstein and Klaus Janson. Imagine Firestorm on the big screen, how cool would that be? Warner Bros. really needs to jump on this superhero movie stuff, so behind it’s comical.

Back to creator Klaus Janson for a minute in relation with Batman The Dark Knight #0 coming out. Batman has always been the Dark Knight, but never did it culminate more so than the debut of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #1 by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson. The true history and debut of the “Dark Knight” happened in 1986.

Aquaman #0 will continue to show why Aquaman is a total badas* these days. Check out this zero issue for the first look at Atlantis. The water man’s first appearance came in 1941’s More Fun Comics #73.

DC Comics is dead set on proving that there is a place for old western style comics (see romance comics?). Although the western comics are holding up some, we await to see the true test here….time. All Star Western #0 is brought to you by Palimiotti and Gray. Having these two creators will always be a reason for these comics to sell! Learn how Johan Hex got that scar on his face in this zero issue. The first All-Star Western comic debuted in 1958; All-Star Western #58. A dynamic tandem on this book as well. Carmine Infantino on pencils and a Gil Kane cover. With legends like that on a book, who needs more of an excuse to get this comic?

Staying on topic of legends, Justice League Dark #0 gives the early day story of a character named John Constantine. John’s true early day story, or debut if you will happened in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 (1985). Penciled by Rick Veitch and written by legend Alan Moore.

Now going moving onto the modern day debuts we come to Red Lanterns #0 and Talon #0. The Red Lantern Corp first sprung up in Green Lantern #25(2007), much thanks to a creator building his own indelible mark on the industry; Mr. Geoff Johns. Scott Synder and Greg Caputo are putting their stamp on the New 52 Batman series. Churning out stories that are selling like hot cakes. Expect Talon #0 to sell out quickly. Talon was created in the New 52 Batman series in issue number two from this past year.

And rounding out the zero issues are these fillers, Batman Incorporated #0, Voodoo #0 and I Vampire #0. Sigh….

[scrollGallery id=168]

An interesting number one issue is headed this way from DC; National Comics Rose and Thorn #1. Look for Thorn or Rose, well it’s the same person in their her debut in Flash Comics #89 from 1947. Think she would have gone to find good help with this split personality disorder by now?

Quick shots: Mark Waid debuts his Steed and Mrs Peel #1 from Boom! Studios. Fine and Private Place #1 from IDW is brought to you by Peter S. Beagle. Happy #1 from Image Comics may be a sleeper. Fashion Beast #1 (Avatar Press) from Alan Moore! Godstorm #0 (Zenescope) and Westward #1 look to be interesting reads.

Check out the covers of the week below. Everything from Marvel, DC to Zenescope!

Until next week, Invest wisely.

Ryall and Kieth Take Readers to THE HOLLOWS!

This December, be sure to get a good perch!

San Diego, CA (September 20, 2012) – IDW is thrilled to announce THE HOLLOWS, a new, creator-owned miniseries from Chris Ryall (Zombies vs. Robots, KISS) and Sam Kieth (The MAXX, Arkham Asylum: Madness)! To combat the catastrophic death of a decaying Japan, survivors create genetically engineered supertrees—wooden leviathans capable of supporting entire cities suspended above the radioactive wastes below. Traveling via jetpacks to stay above the toxic air below, the survivors must also band together against the Hollows, irradiated husks whose humanity has been supplanted by an unquenchable desire to consume human energy! “The Hollows began as a more straightforward tale,” said Chris Ryall, also IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “until Sam and I remembered that neither of us really tell straightforward tales. So the desolate setting for the story is really just the backdrop for a more personal tale of love, loss, redemption, faith, flight, and past versus future, all wrapped up and bound to the archaic flying suit of our protagonist, a beleaguered scientist/explorer named Kobayashi who ventures down from his city-state and finds something entirely unexpected. Along with a little scene- and heart-stealing creature called Urp, too.” THE HOLLOWS is the premiere of a wildly original new world realized in the vivid, expressive tones that can only emanate from Sam Kieth’s hands. Planned for four issues, THE HOLLOWS has been in the works between Ryall and Kieth for some time now. “Well for me it was started visually… it stops short of having the heart of a true fantasy story, stops just shy of steampunk. It’s soft sci-fi at best, and the ghostly hollows provide a bit of horror too,” said Kieth. “Reading over Chris’s wonderful script, The Hollows seems to floats effortlessly through all of these genres. Maybe a cross between City of Lost Children and Brazil; hard to pigeonhole.” A unique, mysterious take on the post-apocalyptic yarn, THE HOLLOWS is sure to fly off the shelves like so many of its winged denizens, so don’t miss out this December! THE HOLLOWS #1 (of 4) is 32 pages, full color, and will be in stores 12/19/12. Diamond code: OCT120417 Visit IDWPublishing.com to learn more about the company and its top-selling books. Captain America Elected President Of The United States of America!

Marvel sent out this Press Release and boy it’s a biggie! Scroll through the preview pages below!

Historic Story Begins in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, On-Sale Tomorrow

New York. NY—September 18, 2012—The people have spoken—and tomorrow Steve Rogers, the man known as Captain America, becomes President Elect of the United States of America! In Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, from rising star writer Sam Humphries and fan-favorite artist Billy Tan, Captain America’s made his dramatic return and publically saved America from an insidious new enemy in one of his most harrowing battles yet. But when all the dust settles, Steve Rogers is about to get the biggest surprise of his life—he’s won the special election for the Presidency via write-in! What does this mean for his future as Captain America? Can he be a President who fights on the frontlines? You’ll find out when this landmark issue hits comic stores, the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and the Marvel Digital Comics Shop tomorrow!

“This is one of those stories that could only be told in the Ultimate Comics Universe, where the only rule is simple—there are no rules.” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve seen Captain America fight wars and battle super villains, but running a country is a whole new challenge—but don’t worry, this isn’t about political speeches and closed door meetings. This is exactly the kind of high-octane, super powered thrill ride you’d expect from a book called The Ultimates!”

Then next week, in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #16, Humphries and artist Luke Ross, Steve Rogers accepts the position of President of The United States- and not a moment too soon! A deadly villain with a personal tie to the Ultimates is about to enact his endgame, one which promises to leave no hero unscathed. Now Captain America must find a way to safeguard this country both as a President and as a super hero—but can he do both?

“Captain America was created in 1941, but this is the first time he’s been made Commander in Chief. It’s an honor to write a landmark milestone for such an iconic character,” explained Humphries. “We’ve made a commitment in Ultimates to show how epic events have significant consequences. President Cap is no different. This will have a lasting impact on Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the whole team.”

With its inception in 2000, the Ultimate Comics Universe reimagined the world’s most popular super heroes for a new generation and has been critically lauded for its bold, resonant stories. In particular, the reinterpretation of Captain America in Ultimates Vol.1 is considered a watershed moment for the character and remains one of Marvel’s top-selling collections. With the August 2011 introduction of Miles Morales, an African American and Hispanic character who became the new Spider-Man, the Ultimate Comics Universe again became a hot topic among media and comic fans alike. Now, acclaimed-creators Humphries and Tan begin the next major chapter in Ultimate Comics Universe history with the release of Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, giving readers a chance to see what happens when the Earth’s mightiest hero takes charge of the world’s greatest nation.

The biggest decision of Captain America’s life is coming tomorrow in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, the game-changing issue that fans can purchase at their local comic book store, on the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop.

CW’s Arrow gets digital comic, plus GEOFF JOHNS cowrites an episode!

Big news from DC about next month’s new ARROW show on the CW. The show will get a digital comic, much like it’s predecessor, SMALLVILLE has. I imagine that, again like SMALLVILLE, the comic will be released in instllments and later collected in print.

But that’s not all! DC writing guru, Geoff Johns has cowritten episode 107, “Muse on Fire”, with  Executive Producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg.

Johns says:

“I’m thrilled to be writing this episode of ARROW, and while I can’t give too much away, I think comic fans are going to like what we have in store for them – keep an eye out for the Huntress.”

He also tweeted the following:

The first episode of ARROW I wrote with @mguggenheim & @AJKreisbergstarts shooting today – keep an eye out for the Huntress this fall!

As comic fans eagerly await the October 10 premiere of the new CW show ARROW, we have news that will make the countdown even more exciting. DC Entertainment is producing a new, weekly digital comic book based on the show that will also debut on October 10.

The new digital comic series will take fans deeper into the world of ARROW, delving further into character back stories and often filling in the gaps between episodes. With ARROW Executive Producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg on writing duties – this comic is a must-have for fans of the show. On the art side, legendary GREEN ARROW comic book writer and artist Mike Grell is on board to draw the first two covers, with rising stars Sergio Sandoval and Jorge Jimenez tapped to do artwork in subsequent chapters.

“This is incredibly exciting for us.  For one thing, Andrew and I are not just television and comic book writers — we’re comic book fans.  We’re also extremely excited to be doing something that I don’t think has ever been done before:  a weekly comic which ties directly into a TV series with stories that fill in important gaps in the television narrative and written by the show’s writing staff,” said Guggenheim.

The first digital chapter of ARROW will go on sale for $.99 on October 10, followed by new weekly chapters each Wednesday.  The comic series will also be collected in print with three digital chapters on sale in one print issue for $3.99 starting on November 28.

About the Show

From executive producers Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern), Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe) and David Nutter (Smallville), hard-hitting action TV series Arrow reinvents the DC Comics hero. After being marooned for five years on a remote island, billionaire Oliver Queen returns home with a mysterious agenda and a very lethal new set of skills that he uses in a war on crime. The series stars Stephen Amell (Private Practice), Colin Donnell (Pan Am), Katie Cassidy (Supernatural), David Ramsey (Dexter), Willa Holland (The O.C.) with Susanna Thompson (Dragonfly) and Paul Blackthorne (The River). From Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Arrow will air Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW this fall.

Another week, another slew of DC Zero issues. Within the past couple of weeks, InvestComics has given the reader a basic synopsis of the Zero issues and then elaborated on each one. This week we’re going to stick to the same game plan, but deliver you the first appearances of the focal character or team. And no, we are not going the route of EVERY single first appearance, i.e. Post Crisis, Pre Crisis, Earth 247, Zero Countdown, Golden Age, Silver Age, 52, Post Flashpoint, etc….you get the idea. We’re going to stick to basics. That would be basics for everyone except for the big cheese known as Shazam and also Captain Atom. Why Shazam you ask? Well because he’s Shazam. Why Captain Atom? Well because his first appearance…..well just read ahead.

Justice League #0 brings Billy Batson to the forefront in this zero origin issue. DC will probably press very hard in making Shazam relevant again, and that’s okay. There’s nothing like trying to rival your own character base (ahem Superman). Shazam first appeared in 1940, Whiz Comics #2 from Fawcett Comics to do JUST that, rival Superman. It wasn’t until 33 years later in 1973 (yes we can count!) that DC Comics bought the rights and Shazam appeared in his own number one issue. So go out and get that 1973 issue before Shazam becomes extremely relevant as he has done from time to time. Only this time, with Hollywood lurking, it’s only a matter of time before we see this character on screen. Or maybe not, Justice League anyone?

The women dominate this week as they have six of the thirteen Zero issues. First up the Mecca of all Superhero women…. Wonder Woman. Just how many times has this character been redone over the years? So many times, it’s comical. So with that, Wonder Woman #0 reveals something from her past and a new villain to boot! Looking forward to that villain! We all have a past don’t we? WW first appearance came in All Star Comics #8 (1941). Supergirl #0 gives readers the answer to that burning question they always wanted to know, as Krypton was falling apart and about to blow to smithereens, who sent Supergirl to earth? Okay…..so staying on topic of the “ridiculousness”, Supergirl’s TRUE first appearance came in Superman #123. So what is the ridiculous part of this you ask? How about that there are two first appearances listed for Supergirl as; Super-Girl and Supergirl. Absurd. Moving right along, Batwoman #0 features Kate Kane and say her size 9 foot on the cover? Kate’s first appeared in 52 #9. Amethyst makes her much awaited reentry into the DC Universe. Right? You were waiting admit it. Maybe not. Anyway, Sword of Sorcery #0 begins anew with the ever so missed Gemworld. You did miss Gemworld too, right? Find Amethyst’ first appearance in Legion of Super-Heroes #298 (1983) sitting in some 25 cent box someplace. Although it does say on the cover that the 16 page preview story is an instant collector’s item! Awesome. Birds of Prey #0 shows us the first meeting between Batgirl and Black Canary. Let the fun ensue! Catch the first Birds of Prey in Black Canary Oracle Birds of Prey #1. And finally, rounding out the six females this week is Catwoman #0. Much like the first appearance of Supergirl with the hyphen or no hyphen, Catwoman’s TRUE first appearance is in Batman #1. Yes THAT Batman; Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. The character appeared in this issue simply known as “The Cat”. Good enough, that’s her first appearance.

Now back to the boys. Jamie Reyes is the Blue Beetle in Blue Beetle #0. Jamie first appeared in Infinite Crisis #3 (2006). The Red Hood (Jason Todd) first revealed himself in Batman #635.

This week Red Hood and the Outlaws #0 reveals how Jason came back to life after the classic storyline “A Death in the Family” put him to death in the hands of the Joker. Ah the good old days. The good old day’s also brings us back Space Adventures #33 (Charlton – 1960) featuring the first appearance of Captain Atom. This first appearance was brought to us by the legend Steve Ditko. Do you need any other reason not to own this comic? Revisiting the Shazam platform here, DC acquired the rights to Captain Atom and he appeared in his self titled comic Captain Atom #1 in 1987.

From Jason Todd to Dick Grayson, Robin’s that simply have issues working with Batman (maybe the DC Universe needs a human resources department?) Nightwing #0 reveals the origin of Dick Grayson as Nightwing. The first time Dick Grayson is the Nightwing character is in 1984’s Tales of the Teen Titans #43.

Legion of Super-Heroes #0  – The first appearance of the team Legion of Super-Heroes happened in 1958. Adventure Comics #247 gets the nod here. Green Lantern New Guardians #0 forms a new team and DC Universe Presents #0 comes at us with some good stories (we hope) with some characters we really don’t care about, but want to.

Marvel Comics treats readers to a reprint issue in Thanos Final Threat. This book covers the Avengers Annual #7 and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2. These are classic comics that need to be in your collection if you want to jump on the next “Darth Vader” of the Sci-fi movie world; Thanos.

Two independent comics to check out this week are Pound Ghouls Night Out #1 and Ghost #0.

That’s it for this week. See you next week!

Invest wisely.

Hero Initiative Partners with The Walking Dead for First-Ever Image Comics “100 Project”

Hero Initiative Partners with The Walking Dead for First-Ever Image Comics “100 Project” Including original covers drawn by Charlie Adlard and (yes) The Walking Dead creator/writer Robert Kirkman

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 14, 2012) – The Hero Initiative, the charity dedicated to helping comic creators in medical and financial need, has drawn great acclaim for its “100 Projects” in recent years, in which 100 artists draw an original cover on a special anniversary issue.

Now, after running projects with Marvel Comics, DC and Archie, Hero Initiative proudly announces that its latest and greatest “100 Project” will feature the best-selling comic of 2012—The Walking Dead #100. This marks the first time Hero has partnered in such a way with Image Comics and Skybound.

Artists including The Walking Dead illustrator, Charlie Adlard, will contribute original covers, as will other top talents such as Dan Brereton, Ian Churchill, Kevin Eastman, Joe Jusko, Dale Keown and Whilce Portacio. And yes, even The Walking Dead creator/writer and Image Comics partner Robert Kirkman will contribute. (He can draw a little!)

“The Walking Dead would have never become the success it’s become without the trailblazers who put in the hard work to make this industry live on into the future,” said Kirkman. “Doing things like this for The Hero Initiative, which helps creators who have fallen on hard times, is a way for Charlie Adlard and I to give back to the community that has provided us with countless hours of entertainment and also a pretty cushy living. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do.”

“They say charity begins at home. Well, I can’t think of one closer to that than the Hero Initiative,” said Adlard. “It’s great to be able to give back to the creators who inspired me.”

A public viewing of all 100 covers will be scheduled for winter of 2012-13, along with auctions of all the original covers. A book collecting all the art will be available in 2013.

IndieCreator with Actress Rachel Kerbs

Actress Rachel Kerbs Steps out of “The Vault” to Discuss Her Indie Work

One of my all-time-favorite indie horror films is a little creature-feature gem called SPLINTER. It’s superbly shot, terrifically acted and eminently entertaining. The first main character killed off is actress Rachel Kerbs who plays a druggie that, with her tough but good-hearted boyfriend (played by Shea Whigham) kidnaps a lovey-dovey couple celebrating their 1-year anniversary with a camping trip (played by comic actor Paulo Constanzo and “Mercury Chick” Jill Wagner). Since SPLINTER, Rachel has been involved in various shorts, features, commercials and web series.

Recently, I contacted Rachel’s manager Bernie Stern to give us an update on her career and upcoming role in the indie film BLESSID. Here’s what she had to say …

1) Your big break (to date) came with your role as drugged out Lacey in the indie creature feature SPLINTER. What was it like working with actors like Jill Wagner, Shea Whigham and comic actor Paulo Constanzo (in a very impressive serious role!)?

(RK:)  SPLINTER was an amazing experience all around. Working with Shea, Jill, and Paulo was a dream. They are all so professional and talented. They made the job so much easier. Playing such an intense scenario every day was a rough task but, working next to them actually made it fun. They would encourage me to push, try different things, and take risks. They were incredibly welcoming and to this day I still lean on them for advice and guidance through this crazy business. I’m just so lucky! I mean, Jill is so so funny and man does she know her stuff! She is a natural with the action and intensity. Paulo is so incredibly gifted. His dry humor and subtle intentions gave SPLINTER an entirely different layer! And Shea, well Shea is the best. I can’t believe I got to work with him on a day to day basis. He taught me so much. He is the most determined, studied, humble, focused person I have ever worked with. They changed me as an actress…for the better, and I am so grateful.

2) On the DVD extras for SPLINTER, the director (Toby Wilkins), DP (Nelson Cragg) and editor (David Maurer) raved about you. One funny note was that David Maurer knew you from a prior film − one that he cut you out of in editing. What was that film and were you a tad nervous that he was editor on SPLINTER? 🙂

(RK:)  HAHA! Well getting cut from projects is part of the gig I guess. You have to be ready for anything. I never take it personally. FOUR SHEETS TO THE WIND is an indie feature directed by Sterlin Harjo. It went to Sundance and rocked it out! My character was a side story love interest for the lead that hindered from the main through line of the story. So I get it. And Toby, Nelson, and David are too sweet for saying such wonderful things about me. They were just amazing on set and they are the reason SPLINTER was a hit!

And no…I wasn’t nervous David was going to cut me again, haha. He owed me! No, Lacey is an asset for the storytelling of SPLINTER. So, I knew she was a keeper 🙂

3) Was there a “blooper” moment that is particularly memorable from the film?

(RK:)  Well, not necessarily a “blooper” but, a funny story maybe. We shot in Oklahoma and there were some unexpected downpours that had been happening while we were setting up. So the crew had everything prepared in case the rain picked up again. Well, we were shooting a scene where the four of us (Shea, Jill, Paulo, and myself) are in the car…then, out of nowhere, RAIN! Big time! And it would not let up. The crew threw a walkie into the car and took cover. They told us to hold tight and wait out the rain. But it went on for a good long while. So we told them we wanted some burgers. So for about an hour the four of us sat in full hair, makeup, wardrobe, mics and all, just eating burgers and laughing about how ridiculous this is. Then, as soon as the rain stopped…it was back to one.

4) How did the film do in theatrical release and distribution?

(RK:)  It had a limited theatrical release, but did well. I think the distribution is great! I mean, I’ve seen countless DVD covers that are in many different languages. It’s pretty cool to see that something I’m a part of can reach so many people. Also, Netflix and Syfy play it a lot from what I’m told 🙂

5) Mark Cuban was executive producer on SPLINTER and is also producing a web series called THE VAULT which you are a part of. Tell us about THE VAULT, your role (and what episode you are in), and where we can follow it online.

(RK:)  THE VAULT is a web series that is like a show within a show. It is a “game show” where contestants are all locked in separate rooms. Each contestant is a college student sporting their school logo and each room has an item or items in it, and the contestants have to figure out what it all means or how they are connected in order to get out/win. There is a control board where one contestant can hear and talk to each room. And just when they start to figure it out…of course…a twist.

And…I’m actually in the NEXT episode!

You can follow and watch THE VAULT at:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/vaultshow

http://www.thevaultshow.com/

6) Did you ever get to meet Mark Cuban? And if you did, did you make him buy you dinner?

(RK:)  HAHA! No I have not had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cuban. But WHEN I do…I will buy him dinner. But drinks are on him J

7) What have you been doing since SPLINTER?

(RK:)  Oh man, so much and not enough! After the SPLINTER premiere I moved to NYC where I did a lot of amazing theatre and got into voiceover work, which I love! After a few years in the big apple I decided to move out to LA. So I’ve been out here for about a year and half now and it’s been interesting. I have done a couple of plays, the most recent being ROUND ROCK which premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. I booked a couple of webseries: THE FAILING MAN, THE KILL CORPORATION, and THE VAULT. I did a short film for USC as well as two other shorts with 52films52weeks (very awesome project!). I shot a SECRET commercial a couple of weeks ago with Bravo’s Jenni Pulos. So much fun! And I’ve been shooting an indie feature, THE WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE, with my friends Trevor David and Amy Vorpahl.

And now…BLESSID!

8) You have signed a letter of interest (and soon will be attached) to play the lead role in a small indie file called BLESSID. What attracted you to the script?

(RK:)  Yes-yes!! I’m very excited! I am attracted to irony when it comes to scripts. And BLESSID has that. Sarah’s struggle is her reality and not a far- fetched one. I feel like the script gives me an opportunity to tell a story that is an interestingly flawed journey that is very relatable. It will make people think. It will change peoples’ opinions. I like having a part in that.

InvestComics Exclusive:  Watch Rachel’s video interview about Blessid here.

9) In SPLINTER you played a hype/druggie and in BLESSID you play a suicidal pregnant woman. Both roles have you looking less than glamorous, which is odd since you are such a fantastic looking actress who recently starred in a SECRET (deodorant soap) commercial. What is it that you think draws you to be cast in these challenging emotionally distressed character roles?

(RK:)  Well, first of all, thank you! It is funny how I am constantly cast in these troubled roles. But, I love to act…and with roles like these…you have to act your heart out. You have to work, study, make choices, take risks, be fearless. I love watching movies that have “real” people in them. No one looks pretty or cares about looking pretty when they are thinking about their next hit, or running from a monster, or pointing a gun at someone. I like to transform into the role. Whether it be a subtle change or a full makeover, it’s my job to do justice to the story, the script, and the character.

Rachel Kerbs Demo Reel

10) A micro budget film doesn’t allow for a lot of rehearsing and prep time — especially since most of the cast for BLESSID (which is being filmed in Massachusetts) who live in LA. How do you plan to prepare for the role?

(RK:)  I will do all of my usual script preparation and I’m sure rehearse during down times on set. But since we all live in LA it shouldn’t be too hard to get together or Skype for some rehearsal time. I’m definitely looking forward to meeting the cast!

11) Although a dark journey, BLESSID is essentially a story about human survival and forgiveness. What do you hope viewers will take away from the film?

I hope that they are surprised. I hope that it changes their opinions. Some of these characters are flawed in an obvious way that makes it easy to judge. But the story proves them to be real people with real problems. There is always a solution…but it may not be the “expected” one. I hope the story evokes emotion that will stay with the audience and start discussions.

12) Where can we follow Rachel Kerbs (in a non-stalker sort of way) online and catch up on your latest projects?

(RK:)  Oh yes! Please follow me! Many different ways to track me down but, I post updates on my Facebook weekly.

Geek-Girl gets a New Edition of her Zero issue!

From our friends at Actuality Press comes Geek Girl #0! Check out the Press Release Actuality Press sent InvestComics.com below with cover art and 2 interior pages!

Press Release:

Cult favorite Geek-Girl gets a New Edition of her Zero issue this week from Actuality Press!

“With Great Glasses Comes Great Klutziness!”

When ‘Little Miss Popular’ Ruby Kaye lands a pair of super-tech glasses – invented by brainiac college geek Trevor Goldstein – in a game of Strip Poker, she’s granted flight, super-strength, and – due to a flaw in the glasses’ programming – super-klutziness!

And this is just the beginning of the changes the glasses will wreak on Ruby says creator/writer Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman); “The tech in the glasses that college chick ‘It Girl’ Ruby selfishly gets a hold of will have a profound effect on her – altering the very ways she thinks and acts. And ‘wreak’ is an appropriate choice of word, as the majority of her ‘cooler-than-thou’ clique ain’t gonna be too impressed with the changes the specs bring about in Ms. Kaye…

“As Ruby, she hangs with the Maine in-crowd, is top of the party-invite list, and has guys queuing up. As Geek-Girl… not so much.” Although on the surface of it this might not seem like exactly the best thing to ever happen to Ruby, ‘surface’ is another appropriate word choice, Johnson continues: “How Ruby adapts to her new-found powers and their clique-alienating effects just might be the making of her – as she learns that with great glasses comes great responsibility and that, ‘geek-chic’ aside, being truly geeky can be truly sexy!”

That’s the social side of things, though – if there’s a super-heroine, there must be super-villains! “There certainly are,” continues Sam, “Geek-Girl is going to find herself smack bang in the middle of Maine’s tights ‘n’ capes scene in a way that she’s really not ready for. Both Super-villains and super-heroes will have significant roles to play in the mini-series that Geek-Girl #0 sets up, and the bizarre villain Mr. Mash-Up [who’s introduced in the issue] has a way to hit Geek-Girl very close to home – right where it hurts!

Geek-Girl #0, written by Sam Johnson, illustrated by Sally Stone-Thompson and published by Actuality Press is available now, priced $2.50 at www.samjohnson-comics.blogspot.com

The Future of AVENGERS ARENA Is Marvel NOW!

Teen Heroes Battle To The Death In New Series By Superstars Dennis Hopeless & Kev Walker!

New York. NY—September 13, 2012— This December, prepare for the deadliest game of all as Avengers Arena #1 kicks off an all-new ongoing series from rising star creators writer Dennis Hopeless (X-Men: Season One) and artist Kev Walker (Thunderbolts). As part of Marvel NOW!, Avengers Arena joins a number of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!

Trapped on an isolated island, 16 superhuman young adults (including members of the Runaways, The Avengers Academy and Darkhawk) are given a chilling ultimatum by their demented captor: Fight or die…only one will walk out alive! Thus begins a primal battle that will test the skills, stamina and morals of each combatant. Welcome to Murder World, where the secrets are plenty, alliances are fleeting, and the key to victory might be rewriting the rules of the game. Who will survive?

“These kids were chosen carefully and with specific story beats in mind. We definitely plan on taking advantage of the broad personality spectrum we have in play,” explained Dennis Hopeless in an interview with Marvel.com. “Even the characters who die off early make their mark on the story. I didn’t throw anyone into the book as cannon fodder.”

“There is no safe base, no refuge, no cavalry to come charging over the hill. The contestants’ every moment is watched, manipulated and controlled,” elaborated Kev Walker in an interview with Marvel.com. “This is up close and personal, more intimate than any other book out there, because it’s just us and them.”

Marvel NOW! is the culmination of Marvel ReEvolution, the groundbreaking new initiative to evolve the comic book experience through innovation. With Avengers Arena, Marvel NOW! ensures fans will discover an entirely new perspective on what it means to be a teen hero…and to survive!

Avengers Arena is one of the most exciting new launches in Marvel NOW!, really embracing the idea of giving fans a new look at the Marvel Universe and showing the deadly results,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “Dennis and Kev have created a series that’s going to leave readers salivating for the next issue, with so many twists and turns that no one can predict where it’s going. They’re also introducing some all-new characters that we’re certain will become instant favorites, like the enigmatic Deathlocket and the mysterious Braddock Academy.”

“Extreme scenarios bring out the best and worst in everyone, especially when you’re a young adult still struggling to find out exactly who you truly are under your mask,” added Editor Bill Rosemann in an interview with Marvel.com. “When ordered to fight or die, which wins out, your morals or your survival instinct? How much are you willing to compromise–and how far are you willing to go–in order to live?”

Each issue of Avengers Arena features special augmented reality content available exclusive through the Marvel AR app – including cover recaps, behind the scenes features and more that add value to your reading experience at no additional cost.

“Not only does every book with the Marvel NOW! logo feature a new superstar creative team and blockbuster story, but they also come with all-new incentives for our retailer partners,” explained David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales, Marvel Entertainment.. “We want to make sure every comic shop nationwide is fully stocked to meet the high demand we’re already seeing for Marvel NOW! And want to make sure their voices are heard throughout this exciting time. Stay tuned for more news on how Marvel will be working directly with retailers to make sure our programs address their needs.”

An all-new series! All-new cast! All-new ways to die! This is Avengers Arena NOW!

This December, Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker redefine justice in Avengers Arena #1!

The last arc of the acclaimed horror series begins this November!

San Diego, CA (September 13, 2012) – As Thornton Wilder once said, “All good things must come to an end, but all bad things can continue forever,” a quote that seems eerily appropriate for LOCKE & KEY. While at times frighteningly dark and brutally violent, Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Eisner-winning series has also sailed on winds of high fantasy and elaborate mystery, striking a mesmerizing balance and attracting a fervent and dedicated audience. While new issues may cease to appear before too long, the unique and vivid memories will live on in fans’ minds and shelves forever.

“Locke & Key is the most fun I’ve ever had writing anything. It’s been a Catherine’s Wheel that throws off story possibilities instead of sparks and a part of me thinks I could live in Keyhouse forever. But I made a promise to the reader in the first issues, that one day ‘all doors would be opened,’ and that time is now,” said writer and co-creator Hill. “Time to open the door that leads to the end of our story and step through. Hopefully readers will like what’s waiting for them on the other side.”

After thirty-odd issues the decisive battle for Keyhouse must be fought; debts and spirits must be settled. LOCKE & KEY: Ω, beginning this November, is where the Locke family’s story, so masterfully begun in WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT, reaches its conclusion.

“Locke & Key has been a journey into pain, wonder, horror, magic, fear, courage, failure, love, hate, and hope. To get lost in this mythology and drama has given me the chance to develop visuals and narrative in a way I could never have imagined possible. Mostly because of the collaborative effort with best friends and artists with passion, creativity and insanity unleashed. Guys, what a ride!,” said artist and co-creator Rodriguez. “But we’ve always been heading to a conclusion that will finally see the light at the end of this last journey. I’m as eager and excited as any reader to open the last door, reveal the final mystery, and unveil the fate of our beloved characters. Be warned – unexpected turns and terrible surprises ahead!”

“We’re building toward a conclusion that Joe’s had in mind since WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and Locke & Key’s editor. “And while some of the story elements have shifted along the way, I can’t remember ever seeing a long-running series that’s had the complete story so fully developed from the start. I can’t wait for people to see it. But I recommend everyone pick up two copies of this series, since the issues are gonna end up stained with tears when readers see what’s going to happen to these beloved characters.”

“And, just because this is the end of the Locke family’s story doesn’t mean it’s the very end of Locke & Key,” Ryall added cryptically…

LOCKE & KEY: Ω #1 (of 7) is 32 pages, FC, $3.99 and will be available in November. Diamond Code: SEP120289

Justice League/Aquaman crossover for THRONE OF ATLANTIS

USA TODAY revealed that not only is the JUSTICE LEAGUE getting a new ART TEAM AND LINE-UP, but the book will crossover with AQUAMAN for THRONE OF ATLANTIS.

Geoff Johns, writer for both titles, told USA:

“There’s still questions of what Atlantis is like and what they do and what they’re capable of and why they exist and who sank Atlantis,” Johns says. “There’s all this mythology behind Atlantis that were not really sure of and no one really has any answers, and we’re about to get the answers.”

Reis and Prado are working on designing Atlantis and the Atlanteans, and they’ve also created a new look for Ocean Master, the old Aquaman villain who’s also the hero’s brother and the leader of the Atlanteans’ world-spanning assault.

“Ocean Master’s an interesting character,” Johns says. “He doesn’t dislike his brother — he just thinks his brother is incapable of leading Atlantis and he’s proven over and over he can’t. He thinks his brother’s a little naïve on how it works.

“And if he’s in his way, he’s in his way.”

Moore & Harris’ JSA: THE LIBERTY FILES – THE WHISTLING SKULL

This December, DC Comics will publish JSA: THE LIBERTY FILES – THE WHISTLING SKULL. From acclaimed writer B. Clay Moore (SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL, OUR FIGHTING FORCES) and artist Tony Harris (EX MACHINA, STARMAN), this new six-part miniseries is set in 1940s Europe. With the Nazi war machine on the move, crimes are still committed even in the smallest hamlets. From the world of the JSA: THE LIBERTY FILES, witness the birth of a new hero for the ages!

“Tony and I have been working on THE WHISTLING SKULL for a while, now, and it’s been an absolute labor of love,” Moore told THE SOURCE. “I think he’s doing the absolute best work of his career here, and there’s no one better to accentuate that than Dave McCaig on color. For readers looking for a new spin on the DC Universe, combined with brand new headlining characters, I think the book will be a treat, and it’s just the first chapter in a much larger story. This initial offering introduces readers to the legacy of the Whistling Skull in a wartime, pulp-infused setting, and should provide something fresh for readers to sink their teeth into.”

“This is a long haul, sweet baby that’s finally coming together,” continued Harris. “Clay and I have been developing THE WHISTLING SKULL for a few years now. Taking every precaution and the utmost care with every word and every line of ink to make sure we bring you something new, fresh and exciting. I could go on and on dropping catch phrases and bore you to death with ‘personal’ ‘important’ ‘kickass’ ‘bloobidy-blah-blab-blab.’ Not gonna happen here.

“What I will say is that a host of friends, contemporaries and scores of fans have shepherded this project carefully and steadily towards the waiting hands of countless devotees of mine and Clay’s creative efforts. It’s something I will NEVER forget as we approach the release of JSA: LIBERTY FILES – THE WHISTLING SKULL. And DC Comics’ willingness to marry and ‘seat’ SKULL firmly in the JSA: LIBERTY FILES universe that I was a part of creating in years past, in effect resurrecting that franchise and allowing us to breathe NEW life into it, is a testament to DC Comics’ dedication to producing exciting, new properties that have the potential to go on for many years to come. I feel like I did when James Robinson and I were preparing to release STARMAN into the world. I can barely sit still.”

Below, take an exclusive first look at JSA: THE LIBERTY FILES – THE WHISTLING SKULL by checking out Harris’ cover for issue #1.

IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO to take over art on JUSTICE LEAGUE

DC has announced that modern day comics legend Jim Lee will be stepping down as artist on JUSTICE LEAGUE, the book he and Geoff Johns revamped to kick-off DC’s NEW 52. Taking over for him are fan (and my) favorites, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, who will begin with December’s issue #15. DC released a cover which suggests that the creative team isn’t the only thing to get a line-up change. Absent are team-founders Flash and Green Lantern, and joining is the hero formerly known as Captain Marvel, SHAZAM. Shazam has been the title’s back-up story, though Johns has always said that he would eventually join the team in the main feature. Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) quit the team in issue #12, and is currently trapped within the Black Lantern, along with Sinestro. The particulars for Flash’s absence are anyone’s guess.

In regards to Jim Lee, DC had this to say:

And for you Jim Lee fans out there, don’t worry. We’ve got some major news coming soon. While that’s all we can tease for now, New York Comic Con is only one month away …

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for 9-12-12.

Last week InvestComics promised a couple of big things to come. In case you missed it, InvestComics will be teaming up with a “Maxim” like magazine called Mancave Playbabes. The role InvestComics will play will be vital for the comic book entertainment section within the magazine and website. Check out the Press Release right HERE. Babes & Comic Books! Match made in heaven!

The second big release this past week was the Interview with Judge Dredd’s new movie Dredd 3D; movie composer Paul Leonard-Morgan. Awesomeness! Check out the Interview right HERE.

More stuff coming from InvestComics…..stay tuned!

Another week of dominance from DC Comics, their Zero issues push onward for another week and carry on for 2 more weeks thereafter. As said in last week’s Hot Picks, it seems a bit of overkill here and DC might be hurting themselves in a way more than helping. “Too much of a good thing is never good”, isn’t that the saying? Although the question really is, is DC making money on this campaign? Yes, and that’s what this is truly about, so good for them. This has been and always will be a business first.

In no particular order, let’s get a quick look at the blitzkrieg coming at us this week from DC Comics shall we?

Batman and Robin #1 checks in with the origin of Damian’s mommy, Talia al Ghul. Meanwhile Batman #0 will probably bore us with the origin of EVERYTHING Batman….his car, costume, cave and gadgets. How can this or will this be a good read? Well Mr. Scott Snyder, impress us…again. Annnnd speaking of Scott (ahem-ahem), Rob Liefeld dons two covers this week; one for Deathstroke #0, in which we learn more about Team 7 and about Slade Wilson and the other is Grifter #0. We learn the “dark powers” of Grifter in his zero issue. DC; knowing that no one really is to care about this zero issue; they threw in a whole bunch of first appearances in here. See, now you have to care. Go DC! Deathstroke however is one those characters destined for greatness one day. As mentioned within the archives of the InvestComics website, if and when WB/DC gets their stuff together, look for Slade to be a big part of their universe on film someday. Until then, be sure to grab your copy of The New Teen Titans #2 from 1980; the first appearance of Deathstroke by Wolman and Perez. Golden. Moving right along here, Batgirl #0 will probably be a good read because Simone is all over that one, as Superboy #0  has implications to be felt throughout the DCU…. (See Grifter #0). Green Lantern Corps #0 features the all new origin of Guy Gardner. Demon Knights #0 digs “deep in the past of The New 52”. (Smell a lame duck here?). Suicide Squad #0 has ties with Team 7 as Team 7 #0 promises to “change everything you know about the New 52.” Too many dramatic solicits, no? But we have two more weeks of this folks! Ravagers #0 will have a couple of characters “affecting the team”. Resurrection Man #0 becomes a causality as this is the last issue and Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.  #0 should meet the same fate, but first we learn who made him. The last of the zero issues, Legion Lost #0 will focus on the origin of Timber Wolf. Incidentally, if anyone is keeping score at home on Timber’s first appearances, here they are….Legion Lost #1 (2011 – post Flashpoint), Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #25 (2007 – Earth-Prime), Adventure Comics #327 (1964 – Earth 0), and Legion Worlds #6 (2001 – Earth-247).

[scrollGallery id=156]

Marvel Comics will have their day in the sun with Marvel NOW!, but for “now” we trudge along with storylines that may not matter in a few months! Fantastic Four #610 brings in a dude called Wizard and he’s a lookin’ for his son Bentley 23. If the Wizard would just do a time travel thingy and travel back 40 issues to Fantastic Four #570 he’d first meet his son. Just saying….

Ultimate X-Men #16 features Nick Fury’s Howling Kittens……yes seriously.

X-O Manowar #5 reintroduces us to Ninjak. Ninjak first appeared in Valiant’s Bloodshot #6 (1993). Find this comic sitting in some 25 cent box at your local comic convention or local comic shop.

As always, scroll though the covers of the week below.

See you next week, invest wisely.

MARVEL NOW teases “Lightning”

When you hear “LIGHTNING” in terms of Marvel Comics, several people come to mind. Thor. Storm. Living Lightning. But, you also think THUNDERBOLTS, with their tag line, JUSTICE LIKE LIGHTNING.  Could that be what Marvel is teasing here? A new Thunderbolts? The old one did morph into DARK AVENGERS, and the old T-Bolts are being weened out of the title.  It has been said that Daniel Way will be doing a team book. It’s also been said that Punisher will be joining a team, and Dillon has a history with him. Plus, Day and Deadpool go ::ahem:: “way” back.  Thoughts?

The Future of Marvel NOW! Is Lightning.

Who is THE FIRST LANTERN?

If you’ve read any of the GL books this past month, you’ve seen the various ringslingers of all colors confused as someone screams “LET ME OUT!” through their power rings. If you’ve read GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 last week, you saw who the mysterious caller was. But, who (or what) exactly IS the FIRST LANTERN, and what part will he play in THE RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY, and the Guardians’ war on free will? Well, they dropped some cryptic hints over on the DC Bog:

“Who the First Lantern is and what his role will be in the upcoming Green Lantern universe will come into play very, very quickly,” hinted GREEN LANTERN writer Geoff Johns. “The being inside has been imprisoned there for a long, long time. The Guardians consider him their greatest threat, but also their greatest source of power. Whether he’s friend or foe will be up for debate, but regardless he is one of the potentially most dangerous beings in existence.”

“In GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, readers got their first glimpse at the First Lantern, someone who’s been locked away for a very long time—for a VERY good reason!” teased editor Matt Idelson. “His presence in this story is the catalyst for something very bad, and yet his story is only going to grow from here.”

Animal Man #0 Preview

DC has shared a peek at this week’s ANIMAL MAN #0 over on there blog.

In ANIMAL MAN #0, witness the origin story you’ve been waiting for! Find out how Buddy Baker became Animal Man. The twist? What actually was the catalyst for Buddy’s superhero persona versus what he perceived happened are two very different stories. Planting seeds that will be fully explored in the “Rotworld” crossover event with SWAMP THING this fall, ANIMAL MAN #0 is written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Steve Pugh

About InvestComics

With 14 year experience of Wall Street trading behind him, Jay Katz started InvestComics as a magazine in 2006; the first issue wasn’t released until June of 2007. The magazine was distributed as a free comic book Investment Guide throughout local comic shops in South Florida. It was also a giveaway on EBay for any winning bid to receive with their order.

Although the InvestComics website was on line in 2005, it wasn’t until 2007 the web site became the main focal point and the magazine ceased. InvestComics wanted to start reaching a broader audience and began to rapidly expand. InvestComics became the “Entertainment” Investment Guide as a result of covering many areas in the industry, focusing on entertainment as well as highlighting investment opportunities. The launch of InvestComics TV (ICTV) has made the site multi-media, attracting some of the biggest names in the industry (Stan Lee, Jim Starlin, Neal Adams) to appear in a split-screen 10-12 minute interview format. InvestComics website was the first to carry interviews in this format and remains an innovator for other comic book websites. InvestComics became Incorporated in 2010.

Paul Leonard-Morgan – Dredd 3D

I recently had the privilege of Interviewing Composer Paul Leonard-Morgan for InvestComics. Yes fortune was on my side. Mr. Leonard-Morgan is an award winning composer and quickly becoming a household name. His credits are quite impressive; Cinema – Limitless, Television Documentary – J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life, and Music Group – Snow Patrol. The video “Amazing Awaits” which aired on NBC is provided below as a sonnet to this man’s amazing work thus far. This is one of my personal favorites. But, we also must touch on another masterpiece of Mr. Leonard-Morgan’s that will be hitting U.S. theaters on September 21, 2012. A NEW Judge Dredd movie. Judge Dredd! Dredd 3D!

And now Mr. Paul Leonard-Morgan.

Jay Katz: Thank you very much for coming to InvestComics to chat with us Mr. Leonard-Morgan. Tell us a little bit about yourself…

(JK): When did you first develop a love for the arts?

PLM: I’ve always been into music, as my mum’s a music teacher, so there would always be music waking us up every morning. Just occasionally it would have been nice to sleep late on a Saturday morning! It was only when I went to Glasgow that I started getting into the whole band scene, and getting interested in how the classical and modern worlds could combine.

RSAMD

(JK): You went to school at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

PLM: I was there for 3 years, studying film music, but I ended up working with tons of bands at that stage. Glasgow had such a vibrant music scene, with all the bands recording in this great studio called Cava, which was in a beautiful old converted church. It was definitely the right time to be doing music in Glasgow.

(JK): Within your bio, it states that you developed a reputation as a composer, arranger and producer at the Academy. How does one get a “reputation” like this? And for those of us not familiar, can you tell us the differences of the three?

PLM: It does? I’ll have to have a word with my manager! I guess what they mean is that people started using me for lots of different things. I was classically trained, so was really at home writing for orchestra. I play loads of instruments, but 2 of my main ones are violin and piano. So I was composing concertos at the Academy. Then these bands would start contacting me, asking me to help out on their albums. If they wanted to have real instruments playing on their songs, then they needed to have someone around who could write for orchestra, so I would come up with new tunes to go over the top of theirs and work out which instruments should play what. That’s what arranging is. If you listen to a track like The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, the strings at the start of that are taken from a track by The Rolling Stones, and were written by an arranger. So any time you hear real instruments on a track, they’re written by an arranger. Film directors would hear some of the bands I had worked with, then get me to go and score their films. Then some of the bands would come in with a guitar and play a melody, and then ask me what I would do with it. So I would come up with a vibe for drums, work out what direction, musically, to take the tune and get all the musicians in. That’s what a producer does. So basically, people gradually heard my stuff and started getting me in to work on their projects, and word of mouth kind of did the rest.

(JK): The equivalent of the Oscars/Grammy’s and the Emmy’s here in the U.S., but in the U.K. would be BAFTA (British Academy Television Awards) and the Ivor Novello Awards (Honoring Excellence in Music Writing). You have been nominated and won a BAFTA award and have been nominated for an Ivor Novello. One of your works that were awarded was a successful British Television Show called Spooks (MI-5 in the US). What was your reaction when you found out you were nominated for these prestigious awards?

BAFTA

PLM:  Everyone always goes on about awards not meaning anything, but it was actually pretty cool. I got a BAFTA for the first film score I did, called Pineapple, and then the first Television drama I scored, called Fallen, was nominated for a BAFTA and an Ivor Novello. BAFTA’s are a huge honour, but the Ivor Novello nomination almost means more, because it’s voted for your fellow composers. The fact that they thought my score was really bold and original affirms your belief in what you do. As far as Spooks goes, that was also unexpected, as it wasn’t the first series of the drama, but my 3rd series of it, so trying to keep the music fresh and integral to the show is a real challenge.

(JK): After watching that scene, we’re going to shift gears here too. You not only are involved with television and movie scores, but rock bands too? What was your involvement with the rock band known as Snow Patrol? And do you have any other links within the pop culture “MTV” genre?

PLM: When I was starting out my career in Glasgow, my studio was in the back of Cava Studios. As I said earlier, all these bands would be recording in the main studio, and they would come to me for help with strings, etc. Glasgow had such an awesome music scene, with bands like Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Travis, etc, all coming out at the same time. Everyone always used to hang around in the same bars! I had been doing a bit of stuff with Belle and Sebastian, and got on really well their drummer, Richard Colburn. Snow Patrol asked the two of us to do a remix of one of their tracks. We did a funky Northern Soul vibe for it. Fun! So from there I would be working with other bands. Isobel Campbell went solo from B & S, and I worked on all her albums. She’s awesome, and such a talented singer. She’s done a few collaborations with Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) which have been great to work on. Then when I came to LA, I did a bit of electronic programming for No Doubt’s new album for their producer, Spike.

(JK): Keeping up with the pop culture theme here. You know Harry Potter too! Well not Harry himself, but one better. You worked on the documentary special called  J.K. Rowling – A Year in the Life. It’s a captivating piece of work watching and listening to J.K. Rowling detail her story. Here’s a three part question. What was this like for you working with such a successful brand? Do you approach this differently at all? And how do you fit your mastery of music to this?

PLM: That was a really interesting project. I was one of only 6 people in the world to know the project was happening, as it was filming over the space of a whole year. James Runcie, the director, who I had worked with before, was actually filming her when she wrote the very last sentence of the entire Harry Potter series. He was sitting around in her hotel room for about a month waiting to get the shot!

I didn’t really approach scoring this differently at all. I knew I didn’t want to do a Harry Potter rip-off. That wasn’t what it was about. It was much more to do with showing Jo’s personality and background – her life story. So I wanted to come up with themes that identified with her, rather than her characters. Though, interestingly enough, there are many parallels between her life and her characters in the books.

(JK): You composed the soundtrack for the Bradley Cooper/Robert de Niro movie Limitless. What was it like scoring that, and how does the score compare to others that you’ve done?

PLM: Limitless was an awesome film. Sometimes when you watch a film for the first time, you just know it’s going to be a hit. It was like that with Limitless. And when I spoke with Neil Burger (the director), it was great, because he wanted a really different vibe of a score. The main character took a drug which made him incredibly bright and able to use all of his brain, so I created sounds and little motifs to indicate what as going on in his brain. Recording orchestras, reversing them and making them sound odd. And being encouraged to be as off-the-wall as possible, but at the same time really modern and tuneful. That’s a challenge, but wicked fun! What is it with me and scoring films with drugs?!

(JK): Your impressive resume even covers animation score. Is there a different mindset when scoring animation or is it all relative?

PLM: Animation is incredibly good fun. There’s not so much a different mindset, but you definitely need to use your imagination more. In traditional films, there are everyday sounds which I am composing along with – cars, atmospheres, every day sounds. In animation, all you’re looking at is the visuals, with a rough voice-over. Everything is added at the end. But it’s still the same vibe. After a while you forget they’re animations and just think of them as characters, so you treat them like you would any other film.

(JK): Okay, so since this is a “comic book” web site there is this one particular movie that you have worked on that we should talk a little bit about. Judge Dredd; Dredd 3D. You composed the entire score. How did it come to fruition that you were going to get the monumental task of composing such a cult hero in a remake and did you have any prior knowledge of the character?

PLM: Yeah, kind of a relevant question! I had finished scoring Limitless a few months earlier, which had been No.1 at the Box Office world-wide. I had gone in and had a chat with the producers, Andrew MacDonald and Allon Reich, and the writer, Alex Garland. We got chatting about musical styles, and how I might treat Dredd. I’m not a huge fanboy, but I grew up with Dredd. He’s such an iconic character. He also scared the shit out of me! I always wanted to ride a Lawmaster…

(JK): Have you seen the original Stallone Dredd movie from 1995? Did you revisit the movie to get any ideas of the character or did you research the comic books? What vibe if any did you come away with regarding the character Judge Dredd?

PLM: I’ve never actually seen the original Stallone movie, and when I told the producers this, they told me not to. What we’ve strived to make in this film is a completely unique, bold and modern experience. And I reckon we’ve done that – it’s completely different to any film and score I’ve seen or heard before.

(JK): Why do you think in your honest opinion that the 1995 film did not fare so well? How much is attributed to a score when a film does not meet expectations?

PLM: From the point of view of fans, I would say that it didn’t go down well because they tried to make Dredd something he never was. Forget about the fact that Sly took his helmet off, and bearing in mind I haven’t actually seen it, it seems to me that the essence of Dredd was lost in it. He’s one bad-ass mofo, and sees things in black and white. He’s not a traditional super-hero in the Hollywood sense, but more a mix of Robocop and Dirty Harry. Dangerous and edgy, not a nice, safe super-hero.

(JK): Can we assume that you have seen the film to most of its capacity to score it? What can you tell fans what they are to expect from it?

Image Provided By DNA Films

PLM: Yes, I have to see the film to score it. Many, many times! I think fans should be so excited. I love dark characters, and that’s what I always took Dredd to be from the comic books. Visually, the film is unique. It’s raw, gritty, brutal and dark as hell. The cinematography’s stunning. They used this camera which filmed at about 10000 frames per second, creating some mind-boggling visuals. Can’t wait to see it in 3D!

From a music point of view, I wanted to create a sound which fitted a future set in 100 years time, so traditional orchestra went out the window. I started off doing some electric guitar-based stuff, but it felt too safe and overly-produced. In the end I went down a really electronic vibe, taking all my 80’s synths, and present day sound modules, creating some really fucked up sounds and putting them through every distortion and fx pedals known to man! For the slow-mo stuff, we tried this software called Paul, which internet geeks will know as the software they used to slow down Justin Bieber’s track and make it into something actually listenable to… I then composed and recorded a whole load of tracks, slowed them down by thousands of percent, and added some realtime score over the top of it. Between that and the visuals, it takes you into a completely original world. And, it must be said, Alex Garland is a genius. Both as a collaborator and as a creative mind.

Image Provided By DNA Films

(JK): Do you ever “hear” your work even with a visual of something, even if you know nothing of the subject matter? Did this happen with Judge Dredd?

PLM: I truly believe that does happen. When I see visuals, whether it’s of a film or of a graphic somewhere, it sets off a creative side of my brain. Melodies and sounds just start coming into it. I know it sounds pretentious, but it’s actually really exciting. It’s starting point. With Dredd, just seeing the visuals got me thinking about sounds, more than themes. Thinking about what would work in 100 years time, and what kind of traditional sounds wouldn’t work.

Dredd 3D Trailer

(JK): With Super Hero films being a global mainstay right now, would you like to compose more Super Hero films in the future?

PLM: Definitely, but I would love to score something a bit lighter in the next month or two! I need to escape Dredd’s authority!

(JK): What comic book movies have you seen and what soundtracks within this genre do you feel absolutely rock?

PLM: I’m still gagging to see the Avengers. I loved the Iron Man films, and it goes without saying The Dark Knight stuff was awesome. I was never blown away by the Spiderman films, though I haven’t seen the reboot yet. As for soundtracks, the really ominous Dark Knight stuff was fab, and Kick-ass was fun! I know it’s not traditional, but the Akira films were awesome.

(JK): So what does a man of your stature listen to when they are driving or at their home?

PLM:  My 15-moth old daughter singing in the back of the car! Actually, I don’t get a chance to listen to that much music, as soundtracks are massively full-on, but I love bands like Feeder, dance stuff like Pendulum, and stuff like Louis Armstrong and The Rat Pack. Kind of eclectic!

(JK): Okay Mr. Leonard-Morgan we’re going to wrap this up, but before we go tell us what you’re working on these days, the future and where we can find you so that we can all marvel at your work!

PLM: Since finishing Dredd, I’ve been scoring Pete Travis’ new project, The Blindman of Seville, and I’ve just started work on the new John Cusack film, The Numbers Station. To listen to my music, you can check out my facebook page or my website. I might even put up a sneak peek of the Dredd score…

Additional Questions:

(JK) The Olympic Games 2012 in London start July 27 – August 12. You have the very distinct honor of composing the US Olympic Anthem ‘Glory of Pursuit’. Where did you look to get the inspiration to write such a privileged piece?

PLM: I was asked to compose it by the US Olympic Committee in 2007. It was a fantastic experience, and one which took me to Colorado Springs to premiere it in front of Olympic Gold medallists. The USOC had heard some of my previous music, and asked me to write a piece of music which reflected the spirit of the athletes, and optimism and belief which they have. Just thinking of an athlete getting up at 5am every day, for years on end, just for a 10 second sprint or a throw of a javelin as the end target, that was inspiration in itself. They are incredible.

(JK) How would you describe the music?

PLM: Uplifting, anthemic, hopeful.

(JK) Composing an Olympic theme that will reach across the entire world, would you consider this the pinnacle of your career so far?

PLM: I’m hoping I haven’t reached the pinnacle of my career yet! But it was certainly an experience which I will never forget, from recording the orchestra in Glasgow in front of the USOC, to be flown over to premiere it in Colorado Springs, to the lifelong friends I’ve made through it. Awesome.

(JK) What did you think of NBC’s final imagery with your music for their promo? It’s quite inspirational.

PLM: Love it. The whole feel-good factor of the whole campaign is something which wouldn’t necessarily work in the UK, but I love it!

InvestComics TV – HERE

First off, some InvestComics updates. Well not any updates right here and now, but there will be some very cool things coming down the pike for InvestComics fans. Tomorrow will be the release of some news regarding InvestComics expansion and also an interview that pertains to….well let’s just say “I am the law!” Is that clue enough for you? Then there is New York Comic Con in which InvestComics will be coming back with some cool things to offer up to fans, and then there is a startup website that InvestComics has very close ties with that will blow you away! We can’t wait to speak about that, but until the website officially launches we stay mum. So a few teases and some more teases. Keep your eyes peeled, things are happening here!

Now let’s get to the 13 number zero issues from DC Comics this week. Yes 13 number zero issues! This is a bit of overkill to say the least isn’t it? More does not always equate to bigger and better numbers or creative output. We wait and see. We hope to get proven wrong. Here is a simple rundown of the Zero issues headed your way this week in no particular order.

Let’s start with the flagship character; Superman. Action Comics #0 brings Grant Morrison onboard to write Clark Kent’s early days in Metropolis. Jeans and a smaller cape for Superman?? Superman’s counterpart Batman in Detective Comics #0 keeps his garb as we get reacquainted with one of his adversaries from long ago. We’ll see how the reintroduction goes for Bruce, should be interesting. Another new Lantern is introduced in Green Lantern #0. This one has a silly mask, cool suit and a pistol? Okay, hopefully there is a good explanation as to having a ring needs to be accompanied by a pistol.

Earth 2 #0 promises a tragic origin for Earth 2’s greatest villain. Yawn? Green Arrow #0 begins the journey of Oliver Queen becoming the Green Arrow. Too bad from the looks of the cover, Oliver looks like he’s ready for the paintball wars on ESPN or something. Sticking with the origin theme here obviously, World’s Finest #0 presents the origin of Robin and Supergirl on Earth 2. Yawn part 2? Swamp Thing #0 and Animal Man #0 have mystery and secrets surrounding those issues. Batwing #0 features a guest appearance from Mr. Bats himself; Batman. DC promises that big shakeups will occur and repercussions will reverberate throughout the New 52 from the new Phantom Stranger comic? Phantom Stranger #0 will play a major role within the DCU. Look for Introductions of major players throughout the pages, DC says. Is this a case of making a Golden Age character relevant for no apparent reason? Stormwatch #0 introduces a new villain, as we watch one of the first users of H Dial in Dial H #0 gets themselves into some deep stuff.  And the last of the zero issues we have G.I. Combat #0. With names attached like Jimmy Palmiotti, J.T. Krul, Justin Gray and Ariel Olivetti do you need more of a reason to but this comic? Seriously.

With all of the DC intros and origins this week, it probably would be a nice change of pace to see what the other guys are doing this week too. Marvel Comics has some introductions as well this week! Not as much as their main competition, but a couple to keep you interested! Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #693 introduces the character known as Alpha and First X-Men #2 gives no name for its introduction character, but as Marvel says “it’s guaranteed to terrify!”

Getting back to Spidey for a minute, as many of you know by now, Todd McFarlane has been paying homage to many cover artists during his campaign on celebrating Spawn’s 20th anniversary. This week Todd pays homage to himself (Todd doesn’t do this too often….NOT) with the cover of Spawn #223. The original cover (in case you were born on planet Mars and hanging with curiosity) was from Amazing Spider-Man #316. Check out the side by side covers. Looks good!

Image Comics brings back Guarding the Globe as a new ongoing series. Guarding The Globe #1 will be with the creative team of Phil Hester and Todd Nauck. The first Guarding The Globe issue from 2010 has Robert Kirkman’s hands all over that one. The new series is in some great hands too!

Archie Comics imprint Red Circle makes the Hot Picks this week with New Crusaders Rise of the Heroes #1. This looks to be a flat out fun story and will probably fly under the radar, so look out for it.

That’s it for now. Be sure to check out all of the links provided above so that you can follow all of the cool things happening at InvestComics. See you tomorrow with some InvestComics news and that awesome interview!

Scroll through the covers of the week below……

Invest wisely.
