HOT PICKS

Remember He-Man? If you do, then you’re within the same age range that I am and enjoyed countless hours within your lifetime saying “I Have the Power!” If you don’t, well you’ll get to know him. Recently the push for He-Man has begun and this week will bring the origin comic of He-Man’s arch nemesis named Skeletor in Masters of the Universe the Origin of Skeletor (2012 DC) #1. If you remember the cartoon, you’ll recall that Skeletor was a bad ass and it was more like a Darth Vader feeling with the character. Every kid wanted to be him at times, then you realize, well this guy is always losing…..so you went back to being He-Man. He-Man first appeared (along with Skeletor) within the comic book realm back in 1982’s DC Comics Presents #47. However, there is a FREE comic book that Mattel put out that predates the mainstream appearance. That comic came out in 1981. Then you have some predate Mickey Mouse (yes THAT Mickey Mouse) comics that claim to have the first appearance of Skeletor before 1981. Granted, probably not the Skeletor that He-Man has issues with, but worth a mention.

Sticking with issues…..Superman will be having issues with Kryptonite Man in Action Comics (2011) Annual #1. Before this villain was a man he was a kid in Superboy #83 (1960). So this issue would be Kryptonite Man’s birth place.

Captain Marvel (2012 7th Series) #6 brings the original Captain Marvel into the mix. This floundering series needs help and will bringing the original character help it? Who knows, but one does understand that once the Marvel Cosmic Universe gets going in the theaters that Marvel’s Cosmic Superman will be part of it (hopefully). InvestComics did call the Guardians of The Galaxy movie many many years ago as well as the structuring of the Cosmic Universe on the big screen. See you know things here way before they happen! Cool! So with that, expect to see in the not so distant future Marvel show DC (Warner Brothers) a lesson on how THEY perceive a flying superhero with a cape. Should be interesting………and also, the first Captain Marvel is in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (1967).

A + X (2012 Marvel Now) #1 has a Hulk story from one of the premiere Hulk artist to come along in some time. Dale Keown. Dale’s vision of the Hulk is clearly distinguishable from any other great Hulk artist. Check out his first work on the Hulk back in 1990 in the Incredible Hulk #367. This issue was written by Peter David with cover art from Walt Simonson. This comic is a keeper.

There is obviously no disputing that Joe Kubert was one of the greatest comic book artists to ever grace the medium. This week DC releases Joe Kubert Presents (2012 DC) #1 and within the pages it will display just why this man was a legend. One of Joe Kubert’s first professional works came in Catman Comics #8, a true collector’s item and a true American Icon.

Bedlam (2012 Image) #1 is the lone number one issue this week that should be checked out!

Check it too…..scroll through the Hot Covers of the week below!

See you next week, invest wisely.

InvestComics Interviews Colorist Jeff Balke

(Jay Katz): Tell us a little bit about yourself.

(JK): “Baby Balke” had fun with coloring, but having met Stan “The Man” Lee in 1993, you say it was a defining moment for you. What sort of inspiration did Stan give you and have you met him since?

(JB) Honestly, with meeting Stan in 93 and having him sign my Amazing Spiderman #41, that was inspiration enough.  But I think it was when he looked at me with his “Stan grin”, and said “Keep going true believer..dont ever give up…”.  Right then and there, its like he saw something in me that I didn’t see.  I didn’t really realize what he was talking about until I got home that evening and figured out..I want to work in comics.

(JK): You’re not only a colorist by trait, you’re an artist as well. Do you prefer coloring over pencils? If so, why?

(JB) I do like coloring much better now.  I always (like a LOT of people), doodled and drew when I was younger, but after I started coloring (when I got older..lol), I just seemed to like it better.  My colors stay more consistent panel to panel…lol!  Sometimes when I was drawing a comic page (way before I got into the comic scene),  I couldn’t stay consistent.  Like I would draw Lady Death (as an example), like LD in the first panel, then the 2nd she would look like Miss Piggy, then the next panel she would look like Cher..lol!  So it was safe to say that I was more comfortable coloring.  But from time to time, I do still illustrate…just haven’t illustrated any books.

(JK): You’re first pro work; Foxwood Falcons (2005?). What was that like to be working as a “professional” for the first time? Do you remember the book vividly or vaguely?

(JB) Yeah I remember that book..lol!  I remember being picked up to do that book on Myspace (LOL..yes, I said Myspace..lol).  It actually came out in 2007 (it was a Wizard World Chicago show). When I got behind the table and sold my first copy, I was walking on clouds.  It was EXTREMELY exciting!  I still get that way today!

(JK): What is a Sketch Coloring Print and how did that get started?

(JB) A Sketch Coloring Print is pretty much like a Sketch Coloring.  It’s a b/w print in which I color up by hand but leave a little bit of it still b/w (but not too much).  Its meant to make that cover or print POP more and just look BAD ASS!

(JK): It’s extremely rare to find any colorists that do as many shows as you do…if any at

All. How do you do it? What’s your secret?

(JB) Honestly, I just LOVE going to shows and meeting the fans!  I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it..if it weren’t for the fans, I wouldn’t be in this industry.  So I just make sure I make time for them.  And shows do just that.
But I love to come up with different unique things for people to purchase at shows.  Like 3D prints, special posters, Chrome posters and so on.

(JK): What really gets you motivated to work in this industry?

(JB) I think just the recognition you get from most everyone in the industry and a simple, “WOW, I worked on that” type of feeling.

But also (for me), I feel, the more comics I make, the more shows I can go too and share it with the fans.

(JK): You have a pretty sweet t-shirt called “Have you been Balked”.  How did that come about?

(JB) When I first started up Sketch Colorings,  a buddy of mine created a flier that asked “Have You Been Balked?”, and it was a comic book cover which he had the progression of a Sketch Coloring cover I worked on for a fan going from the b/w cover, to almost finished to fully Sketch Colored.  I loved the saying, so I kept it..lol!

(JK): How many comics have you worked on in your career thus far?

(JB) So far, I’m worked on 88 comics which are all available in comic book stores.  Comics from Zenescope (Grimm Fairy Tales, Charmed, Wonderland and so on), MoonStone Books (Zombies vs Cheerleaders), Image and Storm King Productions (John Carpenter’s Asylum).

(JK): You do a lot of work for Zenescope Entertainment. Amazing work Jeff. Where else can we see some of your works?

(JB)  Just like stated above, Zenescope books, Image comics, Moonstone Books and Strom King Productions.  There are some other smaller companies, but unfortunately, they have closed up shop.

(JK): Has one of the “Big Two” come knocking on the door yet? Do you care or would you want to work for either Marvel or DC? Is that the ultimate achievement for you?

(JB)  No, neither has come a knockin yet..lol!  But as I always tell newbies who want to get into the industry, you don’t have to work for the big 2 in order to make a good career for yourself.  I’m actually pretty happy working for Zenescope and a few other Indy companies.  Although, I wouldn’t mind getting a full time gig somewhere..lol!
One step at a time 😉

(JK): What’s on the horizon for Jeff Balke?

(JB)  Well currently I’m getting ready for the NYCC coming up next week and a 5 week road trip.  From NYCC, I’m going to be in Dallas the following week for Fan Days, then the week after, I’ll be at the Wizard World Austin show, followed by the following week at the Long Beach Comic Con..THEN finally, taking a little time off for myself in Vegas to relax and unwind..lol!  OH, and did I mention I drive to all the shows.  So literially, I wont be home AT ALL for 5 weeks.  Kind of looking forward to it (seeing parts of the country I couldn’t see in an airplane).
But I also have a few new books coming out from Zenescope the next few weeks including my first cover I colored for Zenescope (Myths and Legends #21).  Pretty sweet!

(JK): Where can fans find you? Stalk you….

(JB)They can ALWAYS find me on FaceBook..lol on my Fan Page (JbalkesCOLORS), my website (www.jbalkesart.com) and on Twitter (Jbalke08).

Thank you Jeff, continued success!!

Project: Rooftop And Valiant Entertainment Announce SHADOWMAN: IN A NEW LIGHT contest

Project: Rooftop  And Valiant Entertainment Announce

“Shadowman: In A New Light” Redesign  Contest

Comics Veteran  And Shadowman Co-Writer/Artist Patrick Zircher To Act As Guest  Judge

Project: Rooftop is proud to announce that they’re partnering with Valiant Entertainment to host their next redesign contest, spotlighting on the hero  Shadowman. Originally created back in 1994 by Jim Shooter, Steve  Englehart, David Lapham and Bob Layton, Shadowman has become one of the  biggest heroes in independent comics, selling over 5 million copies of  his long-running series and prompting several video game spin-offs. And  now with the character returning in an all-new series, Shadowman in November, Project: Rooftop is organizing artists worldwide to submit  their own renditions of the hero for prizes, reviews and recognition.

Shadowman  is one of the key figures in the Valiant comics universe; a dark  vigilante who strives to banish the sinister forces that try to creep  their way into our reality. The character returns in November with an  all-new series by co-writer/artist Patrick Zircher and writer Justin  Jordan.

“We’re excited to partner with a prestigious comic company  like Valiant and give our readers and our artists something special for  this redesign contest,” said journalist and P:R co-founder Chris  Arrant. “On behalf of Dean, the P:R contributors and our readers, we’re  excited to see how artists will reinterpret the Shadowman character.”

Joining the regular P:R judges is veteran comics artist and artist of the upcoming Shadowman series,  Patrick Zircher. Zircher is responsible for the modern designs of both  Shadowman and Ninjak, and previously worked on a variety of Marvel  titles including Captain America and Iron Man.

“Valiant’s  night-prowling, monster-hunting hero is a very special character for  me,” said Zircher. “There’s a terrific pool of talent out there and I’m  really looking forward to the contest designs for Shadowman.”

Valiant Entertainment is providing prizes for the top three places in our contest. First place will receive a copy of the rare Shadowman Black, the Bill Sienkiewicz variant cover to Shadowman #1 and the Dave Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2. Second place will receive the Dave Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2 as well as a complete run of the Valiant books released since  the company returned this summer. Third place will receive the Dave  Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2.

Entries  for “Shadowman: In A New Light” should aim to create a new take on the  hero that stays true to the character’s concept and history and only revise their costume, as if your design was in the running to be used  in current continuity. All entries must be received by November 30, 2012  at midnight EST. As usual, check our guidelines, include your name and website, and send your art as an attachment in jpg, png, or gif format to projectrooftop@gmail.com.

Thanks to Paul Milligan for designing the logo for this contest.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 10-24-12.

Well some may have noticed the number in place of the date that usually appears within the title of the Hot Picks every week. The change is one of many to come down the pike. InvestComics will be changing things up a bit to coincide with the times and what people/fans want to SEE and read about. Don’t fret though; your favorite Hot Picks article every week will not be going anywhere! The numbering however brings back the “issue” feel back to things. The way InvestComics first started was in fact by the magazine issue numbering. So with that, we have gone back to the numbering. We will start with the #240. There are #237 Hot Picks within the archives as well as 3 actual print magazines which equals 240! Yay for adding! Here’s the thing though. Many Hot Picks articles were lost during a migration a couple of years ago to the NEW InvestComics website, but we aren’t going to cry over spilled urr…comics? We forge ahead! Here’s to the NEW InvestComics transformation!

…And speaking of magazines. Before getting to a little word in on the New York Comic Con visit I’d like to thank owner of Mancave Playbabes Magazine Sid on a spectacular Launch Party that InvestComics was a part of in Miami Beach this past Friday night. Of course if you haven’t heard by now, I am writing an exclusive article each month that will appear only in the magazine. The Mancave Playbabes website has a spot just for InvestComics on it too! I’ll have original articles, Interviews and much more to appear there. It’s been a blast so far and the launch party was unbelievable. Check out some pictures on the InvestComics Facebook Page and also the Mancave Playbabes Facebook Page. The banner to the event had the InvestComics logo on it and it felt good to see it next to the other fantastic contributors to the magazine. Take a look at the picture of the banner to the right. Yes it’s a good time to be with the InvestComics team and go Mancaver’s!

Another year in the books, New York Comic Con 2012 can be described in one word; crowded. I cannot recall the show ever being as wall to wall as it was this year. The experience to be completely honest here was a bit unsettling. There was no comfort room, no space to move about on a “normal” basis. It’s a fantastic picture in the literal sense and adds up to big cash for the promoter’s, but it was a bit discouraging this year for the regular press person getting around from point A to point B.

The biggest change came at the expense of the creators themselves. The guys and gals who have put the comic industry where it is today were put in a separate area all to themselves. The fans had to walk this long hallway to visit their favorite writer/artist/colorist/inker.  Why was this done exactly? Not too sure, but after speaking to quite of few of them, the consensus was not of the good kind. Many of the creators felt a bit slighted and wanted to be in the “thick of it” outside in the actual convention hall. The same can be said here for the Independent publishers as well. They were put all the way on the side wall with 3 aisles. Aren’t we missing the understanding here that THEY too are a driving force of creating new innovative material that will probably be picked up eventually by some movie mogul in Hollywood? Yes we all do understand that Marvel/DC/Image and everyone else will get the main floor because they bring the most money, but it still doesn’t mean we all have to except the ineptitude feeling here. Yes fans get it, the Image Comics’ of the world will bring the most money, but they too were a small outfit at one time as well. Giving the creators a separate part of the show and the small publishers a side wall is truly showing how much the climate has changed here and how it’s been changing for years. Lest we forget the biggest kicker here…….the comic book dealers. They had a few aisles on the direct opposite side of the convention to the small publishers. These areas…….you could pretty much move freely. The “Comic Book” Conventions truly need to change the title of the shows to “Entertainment Conventions” because it’s not about comic books anymore. It’s about movies, television, celebrities and cosplay. Truth be told here, although cosplay is fun to look at and has become a main staple within the convention scene, it doesn’t equate to money. Yes they pay their ticket, get in and roam around playing with other cosplay people. They simply do not spend money at these shows. They make for great filler for photo ops, that’s it.

One good thing regarding Artist Alley, it worked out better in regards to movement. The aisles were wider so it was easier to find your way through to your favorite’s and explore talents one was not familiar with before.

All in all a nice show. Lots and lots of eye candy both figuratively and literally (for the fanboys). If you are claustrophobic, have any sort of anxiety issues, this place is definitely not for you. If you like the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the Vegas style in a New York Atmosphere, then this is a place for you. It’s Circus Du Soleil of the Comic Book Conventions. Not that this is a bad thing, just don’t go expecting too much about………comics.

Yes things have changed and depending on how you want to look at it or who you talk to, it’s got its good points and not so good points. So with that, as spoken about at the beginning of this article, the InvestComics website will see some changes too probably, but that’s a discussion for another day.

And of course as always there will be lots of great videos/picures forthcoming from the show, so look out for that! For now though, go to the InvestComics Facebook Page and check out some picures from the NYCC 2012.

Be sure to check out me out on tonight’s Podcast; Independent Road with Peter Palmiotti. Click the underscore title and call in! Don’t be shy!

Now let’s get to the Hot Picks!

There are 10 number one issues coming out this week. Looks like the numbers game will never change. Slab the number one on a new comic book and it instantly becomes appealing. Not to be outdone though is Chew #30 with its triple gatefold cover this week. Ah yes, the 90’s didn’t seem that long ago has it? Oh yes and the die cut Batman comics. Boy oh boy……Anyways….

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=183]

DC’s wildly popular Talon gets his own comic Talon (2012 DC) #1, while the Madame gets her own title National Comics Madame X (2012 DC) #1. The Madame’s original appearance first came in 1978’s Doorway to Nightmare #1. Moving right along to the Marvel side of number one issues this week we have A-Babies Vs X-Babies (2012 Marvel) #1. This comic marks the first appearance of the Avenger Babies, but the first X-Babies appeared in Uncanny X-Men Annual #12 (1988) with cover art from Art Adams! Now we arrive to the question marks of the week. Wolverine Max (2012) #1 and Punisher War Zone (2012) #1. Another title for these two? Another number one issue? How many times are we to go down this road exactly? Wolverine will be “uncensored” and tearing people apart in the Max series. Who cares? Really. Been done before, nothing new here. Same with the Punisher War Zone. War Zone was first started up in 1992 with John Romita Jr. at the helm. And didn’t that have a die cut cover?? Oh yes it did!

Let’s get to some regular issues here before heading back to the number one issues with the Independents. All Star Western (2011-) #13 features the origin of the new Tomahawk. Find his first appearance way way back in Star Spangled Comics #69 (1947). Good luck trying to find a near mint copy of that black cover! Fury of Firestorm (2011-) #13 brings on new writer/penciler Dan Jurgens which is very awesome. With him he brings a villain named DataXen. It only took 13 issues into the new Superman series to include the words “death of” within its solicit. Superman (2011 3rd Series) #13 features the death of……(who cares?!).

And not without flare for dramatics do we leave out Marvel of course! Avengers (2010 4th Series) #32 promises to set the internet abuzz! Okay……let’s see what this will bring. Yawn. At least we have a new villain to look forward to in Secret Avengers (2010 Marvel) #33. New villains and heroes are always a lot of fun to check out!

On the independent front we have quite a few number one issues to check out. Probably the most interesting of the bunch is Killogy (2012 IDW) #1. Then you have Bravest Warriors (2012 Kaboom) #1, Chosen (2012 Dynamite) #1, Multiple Warheads Alphabet To Infinity (2012) #1 and the latest in the world of the Walking Dead craze in magazine form this time in Walking Dead Magazine (2012) #1. Last thing to speak about this week is Todd McFarlane’s continued reign on the cover nods of yesteryear. Check out Spawn (1992) #224’s tribute to Miller’s Dark Knight.

This is all for now…..check out the covers of the week below.

See you next week, invest wisely.

SCOTT SNYDER/JIM LEE to launch new SUPERMAN ongoing in 2013.

At NYCC, DC announced that SCOTT SNYDER, the writer behind the best selling BATMAN, and JIM LEE the artist behind…really? Do I HONESTLY have to tell you who Jim Lee is?…anyway, they’ll be teaming up for a new SUPERMAN ongoing for the new 52 in 2013. 2013 is also Superman’s 75th anniversary, and when the new MAN OF STEEL film will reboot the movie franchise.

The new book, at this point, has no title, but Lee and Snyder promise all the classics Superman characters, some new ones, and even…you guessed it…Bruce Wayne.

In the same panel, Snyder discussed how he feels Superman’s greatest strength and greatest weakness are his need for restraint.

ON DC’s blog, Lee was quoted with:

“As a huge fan of Scott’s writing, I’m looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott’s story as it unfolds. Scott’s crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!”

While SCott Snyder added:

“I’ve loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It’s a dream come true for me on every front,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it’s the Superman story I’d write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It’s an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it’s a character piece for Clark – it’s going to challenge him to his core. And it’s definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama – the biggest and most earth shaking action I’ve ever done. Can’t wait to see what you all think of it. Couldn’t be more grateful or excited to get the chance to make this one!”

But, fear not Snyder bat-fans! The author assures us that he will NOT be leaving BATMAN anytime soon, nor will he abandon AMERICAN VAMPIRE, his Vertigo title.

I’m sure DC will have more on this it progresses.

IDW Limited has partnered with twelve of the juiciest brains in sci-fi, horror, and fantasy to deliver two limited edition prose novels set in the popular Zombies Vs. Robots universe. Signed, limited editions of Zombies Vs. Robots: Z-BOYS IN THE ROBOT GRAVEYARD and Zombies Vs. Robots: THIS MEANS WAR! are now available for rabid consumption at www.IDWLimited.com.
“Zombies Vs Robots is a nightmarish dystopian world and one where I’m strangely comfortable,“ said contributor and acclaimed horror author John Shirley. “I can hardly wait for it to come true. Meanwhile I have to help create it.” Shirley’s Zombies Vs. Robots: Z-BOYS IN THE ROBOT GRAVEYARD is a brand new collection of two stories with overlapping characters and one central theme; fear. “I wanted to bring something fresh to this world–if there’s anything “fresh” about zombies,” explained Shirley. “I leave it up to the reader to decide who’s the real  monster…and what’s worse, zombies, robots, or the survivors. But there are people out there you can care about…You could drink a beer with them–if they live long enough..” Both Shirley and Dan Bradford, the book’s illustrator, have signed every copy available from IDW Limited. This special edition features an exclusive variant cover and is limited to just 500 copies.
Because scares come better in pairs, IDW Limited is also offering a special, limited edition run of Zombies Vs. Robots: THIS MEANS WAR!. The first release in the Zombie vs. Robots prose line, this thrilling collection is now presented in a custom slipcase with a new cover, and is signed by each of the eleven writers who contributed a story. A star-studded cast of award-winning writers like Nancy A. Collins and Brea Grant penned these gruesome, terrifying, and sometimes hilarious tales of zombie-on-robot-on-human violence. Each writer has signed the signature plate inside every book, which also features a brand-new variant cover by the book’s artist, Fabio Listrani.
“It’s extremely gratifying to me–and still pretty amazing–that the Zombies vs Robots world that Ash Wood and I created has become a thing that other people have taken and run with,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “And we’re talking about talented people and legitimately great writers like John Shirley, Nancy A. Collins, and the others. Thanks to them and their editor-bot Jeff Conner, they’ve taken the ZvR franchise into some exciting new directions.”
Just in time for the holidays, these very limited editions of Zombies Vs. Robots: Z-Boys In The Robot Graveyard and Zombies Vs. Robots: THIS MEANS WAR! are sure to get under your skin.

DIGGLE/DANIEL to take over ACTION COMICS

Writer Andy Diggle and artist Tony Daniel will be taking over ACTION COMICS as of issue 18. Current writer Grant Morrison will be leaving, presumably to work on the recently touted and long awaited MULTIVERSITY, with Frank Quitely and the Charlton heroes on the first arc.  The Promo art features Superman in the black uniform, which appears to be his same new 52 Kryptonian armor/body suit, which has the ability to change color and design. It was also seen in ACTION COMCIS #0, when a fully grown Superman was shown to somehow be on Krypton at the asme time as infant Kal-El. Superboy was also seen on Krypton in SUPERGIRL #0, so maybe Diggle and Daniel’s run will include that story.

Here’s the release from DC’s Blog page.

Next spring, ACTION COMICS will come to you from an all-new creative team. Beginning with issue #18, writer Andy Diggle (THE LOSERS; GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE) and artist Tony Daniel (DETECTIVE COMICS; JUSTICE LEAGUE) will be bringing you the Man of Steel’s adventures in the acclaimed series.

“I’ve always had a positive experience working with DC Comics, and it’s amazing to be welcomed back into the fold in such fine style,” Diggle told THE SOURCE. “Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best – and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.”

“First, let me say that I am really excited to be working with Andy Diggle on ACTION COMICS,” continued Daniel. “Superman is a character I’ve wanted to work on for quite a while now and I’m now very fortunate to be given this tremendous opportunity to work with such an iconic character. I look forward to drawing each and every character in Superman’s universe. I anticipate this being a fun ride for me and hopefully for Superman fans as well. I can’t wait to get Andy’s first script and sharpening my pencils! Thank you everyone for your support of my work on BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS over the years. I already miss the Dark Knight, but I look forward to starting anew with the Man of Steel in ACTION COMICS. I hope to see you all in Metropolis!”

ACTION COMICS #18 is due out in March.

Ethan Van Sciver takes over monthly art chores on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT

In an interview with COMICBOOK RESOURCES, Ethan Van Sciver revealed that he will be the new artist on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT.

On their own blog, DC had this to say:

Joining New York Times bestselling writer Gregg Hurwitz, Van Sciver will make his debut on the series with issue #16, which travels into the twisted world of the Mad Hatter. In the issue, Batman discovers a trail of bodies but no leads as he realizes that this is unlike any Mad Hatter case he’s seen before.

“With Scarecrow, a lot has already been said about who is he, but not a lot has been said about the villain we’ve chosen: the Mad Hatter,” Van Sciver told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “It really is going to be a revelation to a lot of Batman fans who have seen this villain around for a long time but haven’t given as much thought as to what makes him tick. We’re inventing a lot of things as we go along with it.”

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for 10-10-12.

Very exciting week coming up, I will be attending the New York Comic Con for the third straight year as press for InvestComics! Every year brings a different vibe, but the main focus of my trip is always to see family and friends. Being a native New Yorker, it’s fantastic to get up there to see everyone. There will of course be video and picture coverage of the greatest comic convention on the east coast posted on InvestComics, so stay tuned for all of the goodie’s. Very cool giveaways as well, so like I said stay tuned!

InvestComics’ Robert Heske (IndieCreator/Consultant) is writing/producing a micro-budget feature film called BLESSID. The filming is going very well as I try to keep tabs on what’s going on because it’s all so very Interesting to me to see how a film is made from scratch. I tell you one word that comes to mind when I speak to Robert about the filming; Passion. Robert gives off a passion that exults an energy that is unmatched. His Indie film Blessid will display it. This week however, a teaser came out for the film and you can see it by clicking right HERE. So an early congratulation goes out to a great writer, a passionate screenwriter and a friend. Follow your dream Robert, I’ll support you every step of the way.

Yesterday on InvestComics a new video Interview went up. The focus was on a beautiful model named Trina Mason. Why interview a model? Are you serious?? Well besides being in the presence of an absolute down to earth gal, she is the star of a comic coming out called Death Fox from What The Flux Comics. You should really check out the video interview right by clicking HERE. You have a chance to WIN a poster signed by Trina herself too! Check it out!

Now let’s get to these Hot Picks!

…..Of course the much hyped Batman (2011 2nd Series) #13 will be the headliner on the shelf at your local comic shop. The much awaited return/reintroduction/reinvented villain known as the Joker. This comic will sell out instantly so expect many reprints to hit soon after. A collectors note here; ONE of these reprints will probably be a very cool variant that will most likely see a short print run, thus creating a “more valued” comic. Which one will it be? Who knows? Play it safe and give DC all of your money and buy all of the variant printings. That all said, will the reintroduction of the “new” Joker stick and be accepted by fans? Only time will tell and the variants as well as the multiple printings may become worthless collector’s items fast if fans give a big ho hum and interest wanes. Be smart…..invest wisely.

Hot Picks

[scrollGallery id=179]

……Annnnnnd speaking of variants. One sure to be big waste of time variant cover pimping will be Uncanny Avengers (2012 Marvel Now) #1. Yes this new series will probably kick some ass as we all hope, but the abundance of variant covers is a huge waste if you’re looking to get any as collecting pieces to add to your collection. Big flip model here on Ebay if you want to make a QUICK buck. Do it fast because this series will be a good one (hope again), but will not sustain a back issue demand.

So let’s stick with the whole “this comic will change things” attitude since we were just talking Uncanny Avengers #1. DC promises the same thing this week’s Phantom Stranger (2012 DC) #1 and Team 7 (2012 DC) #1. Does anyone wish the drama would cease just a tad with the DC Universe? We get it…..we really do. Things are going to be different. And Marvel would you chill out with that too? Oh wait a minute, Marvel NOW! hasn’t even really begun yet…..geez. Here we go again.

Getting back to basics here; Avenging Spider-Man (2011) #13 will have appearances by Deadpool (which is obviously the new Wolverine appearing EVERYWHERE) and the not much used Hypno-Hustler. Isn’t that character just groovy? The Hypno-Hustler first appeared in The Spectacular Spider-Man #24 from 1978. Created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Frank Springer!

Red She-Hulk (2012) #58 gives us the first self titled Red She-Hulk book. Was there a demand for this? Who asked for this exactly? Anyway, the Red She-Hulk debuted in Hulk #15 (2009) in case you were at all interested….yawn.

So let’s get to the pointless number one issues for this week shall we? AvX Consequences (2012 Marvel) #1 and Marvel Universe Vs Avengers (2012) #1 earn the dubious distinction of making this list. Uh, Marvel NOW! where are you….?

On the NOT so pointless number one issue front we come to Evil Ernie (2012 Dynamite) #1. Ah yes, a cool character Indie comic that deserves some attention. The comics’ storyline is named “The Origin of Evil”. Can this be any cooler?? And check out the ridiculously awesome variant from Adrian Syaf!! Simply awesome! The great Brian Pulido first introduced us to this enigmatic character back in 1991’s Evil Ernie #1 from Eternity Comics. Do yourself a favor and get into the world of Evil Ernie, if you’re haven’t already, you’re missing out.

More number one issues to check out, Point of Impact (2012 Image) #1 and Haunted Horror (2012 IDW) #1.

That’s it for this week. Not sure if we’ll be here with a New InvestComics Hot Picks next Sunday. I will be at the New York Comic Con!

Invest wisely.

O’Barr Returns to Comics with a New CROW Series!

The Spirit of Vengeance Goes on a Time-Traveling Journey This December

[The Crow Skinning the Wolves Cover]San Diego, CA (October 4, 2012) – IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce that The Crow’s original creator, James O’Barr will be launching a brand-new story featuring the vengeful avian guide, THE CROW: SKINNING THE WOLVES, a three-issue miniseries set to debut this December. Fans of O’Barr’s dark signature style will be delighted to see him backed by co-artist Jim Terry with a story woven of the same supernatural mystique that made The Crow a favorite of fans worldwide.
“I’ve been wanting to see a new Crow project from James O’Barr for a lot longer than we’ve had the Crow license,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and what James has lined up for Skinning the Wolves and beyond is definitely delivering on those expectations.”
Set in a European concentration camp in 1945, Skinning the Wolves investigates a world where the dark harbinger of vengeance is dispatched in response to one of history’s greatest atrocities and the ultimate evil that perpetrated it.
“This is a story I’ve had planned for ages; 20 years maybe. It’s a tough tightrope to walk, using a concentration camp as a setting for a story, but I took care in not exploiting the situation for entertainment purposes. I did layouts and a rough story outline, but got sidetracked with the increasing popularity of the original film and graphic novel of The Crow and never found the time to finish it,” said O’Barr. “I met Jim Terry a few years ago and was really truly impressed with his Eisneresque style and thought it would be perfect for him. He’s gone above and beyond my expectations and I’m very proud of him and this book.”
“I couldn’t have asked for a better story to work on, and it has been thrilling to see it develop into what I feel will be a truly special book,” said Terry. “There are many, many titles on the stands these days, but I believe SKINNING THE WOLVES will be different from them all–not from a place of hubris, but from genuine excitement over what it’s become.”
Full of the dark, challenging questions and ideas that have propelled The Crow to international acclaim, Skinning the Wolves is sure to be a gritty spectacle; one not to be missed by any comics fans, macabre justice enthusiasts, or those in between.
Veteran producer Edward R. Pressman, producer of the 1994 smash hit film The Crow, together with Relativity Media and Dimension Films, is at work on a reinvention of the original film, which explores its own unique storyline separate from the comic book, with F. Hunger must be stopped! Quickly, Robin–to the Bat-KIA!

KIA MOTORS AND DC ENTERTAINMENT BAND TOGETHER TO CREATE A FLEET OF JUSTICE LEAGUE-INSPIRED VEHICLES FOR HUNGER-RELIEF EFFORT

Legendary Comic Artist Jim Lee is Overseeing the Creative Direction of Eight Individually Customized and Characterized Superhero Vehicles to be Unveiled at Major Events Around the Country Over the Next Ten Months

  • Batman-themed Optima will be first to be unveiled the same week as New York Comic-Con on October 10
  • As part of the partnership, Kia is teaming up with DC Entertainment’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign to help fight hunger in the Horn of Africa

IRVINE, Calif., Oct 3, 2012 – Kia Motors America (KMA), one of the fastest-growing car companies in the U.S has joined forces with renowned comic book publisher DC Entertainment, to bring the World’s Greatest Super Heroes to life by combining automotive styling with comic book art.  The partnership, which will yield eight individually customized vehicles, harnesses the talents of legendary comic book artist and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee, who has collaborated on the design of each car with his vision for each iconic member of DC Comics’ Justice League.

Each core member of the Justice League line-up – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg – has been matched to a Kia vehicle based on key attributes and character traits to create custom, one-of-a-kind rides to be unveiled over the next ten months at major auto shows and comic conventions across the U.S.

The Kia-DC Entertainment partnership will yield a total of eight vehicles timed to be unveiled around five major events around the U.S., including New York Comic-Con, SEMA Show in Las Vegas, North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Wonder-Con and San Diego Comic-Con.  Many of Kia’s most recognizable and decorated models –  the Optima, Soul, Sorento, Sportage, Rio and Forte will wear the iconic colors and marks of the legendary Justice League Super Heroes and be built by West Coast Customs, RIDES magazine, Import Tuner magazine and others.

“Kia and DC Entertainment are both global brands sharing a youthful and creative mindset, and both serve to inspire and exhilarate their respective fan bases.” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  “This partnership will allow us to band these two great brands together in an effort to make the world a better place through the ‘We Can Be Heroes’ campaign.  And with Jim Lee’s vision combined with the efforts of some of the best customizing shops in the business, it’s going to be a lot of fun unveiling these cars around the country.”

The partnership between KMA and DC Entertainment was conceived to benefit “We Can Be Heroes” (www.WeCanBeHeroes.org), a giving campaign, dedicated to helping fight hunger in the Horn of Africa and inspired by the heroism of the iconic Justice League characters.  “We Can Be Heroes” encourages everyday people to join the fight by getting involved and donating to bring help and hope to the people most affected by the hunger crisis.  Each vehicle will feature a customized piece of Lee’s specially-designed artwork to be auctioned at the conclusion of the program with all net proceeds going to the “We Can Be Heroes” program. In addition to the seven vehicles inspired by the individual superhero characters, the Kia-DC Entertainment partnership will culminate with a fully-drivable custom car that encompasses each member of the Justice League that will be auctioned off to raise money for the cause. Kia will help to raise awareness for the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign throughout the partnership through customized “We Can Be Heroes” license plates, signage, collateral materials and in-vehicle video displays.

“DC Entertainment is pleased to be partnering with Kia on this program to help raise awareness and funds for the devastating hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa,” said Amit Desai, SVP of franchise management, DC Entertainment.  “Each of the iconic members of the Justice League is a superhero in his or her own right, but when they band together as the Justice League, they become an unstoppable force for good and right.  The Justice League reminds us that when we combine our efforts with others, we can create a world of change.  And that we can do all that and more with style and panache.  The Justice League characters look amazing on some of Kia’s best-looking and technologically-advanced vehicles.”

Kevin Freeman named New President of Action Lab Entertainment

October 3, 2012

Effective October 1, 2012, Kevin Freeman has been named the new President of Action Lab Entertainment.  He replaces Shawn Pryor, who has served as President since the publisher’s inception in 2010.

Pryor will remain an integral part of the Action Lab team.  He will focus his efforts on building the digital side of comic production and serve as the primary contact to ComiXology, Comics Plus, Graphic.ly, and other digital outlets for Action Lab’s wide range of titles.  He’ll also serve as Action Lab’s web admin and be a facilitator for special projects.

In the almost two years that Pryor served as president, Action Lab went from a small unknown publisher to an award-nominated, and award winning, company.

“An administrative shift was needed to ensure that the future of Action Lab was maintained as it continues to grow,” explained Pryor.  “As we expand, our staff needs to expand as well.  We need to be able to spread out responsibilities, and that’s where Freeman comes in.  Now is the time to let someone else take the company further.”

Freeman brings with him a myriad of editorial and administrative experience, having served as the Managing Editor for comics publisher Ape Entertainment from 2005 to 2012.  He also served as interim Editor-in-Chief at Ape in 2009.  He joined the Action Lab team as Managing Editor in June 2012.

“I’m really excited to serve as Action Lab’s new president, and humbled that they are giving me this opportunity,” said Freeman.  “The upside of this company is limitless.  Given our early success, our recent acquisition of the Vamplets license, and a number of other huge projects that we can’t talk about yet, Action Lab is going to be on the publishing map for years to come.  We are doing amazing work here.”

Action Lab received two Eisner nominations in 2012 for its critically-acclaimed all-ages comic Princeless, and has been praised for its diverse library of titles, including Double Jumpers, Fracture, and The Order of Dagonet.

ABOUT ACTION LAB ENTERTAINMENT

Action Lab Entertainment was founded in 2010 by a group of indie-maverick comic creators with the sole intent to bring the world the most action packed, most thought-provoking, most entertaining comics available, thereby ushering in a new age of world peace under the dominating, yet benign control of the Action Lab. Action Lab Entertainment is the public front for all the activities of the Action Lab and its members. Although most of the Action Lab’s activities remain classified, Action Lab Entertainment can disclose that two of its many functions are the marketing of comic books through various sales outlets, and the expansion of their domination into other mediums.

MEMORIAL Returns With Some “Imaginary Fiends”!

Chris Roberson and Rich Ellis Launch a New Digital Miniseries!

[Memorial Digital Image]San Diego, CA (October 3, 2012) – IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce the follow-up to the acclaimed miniseries MEMORIAL, by Chris Roberson (Edison Rex, iZombie), Rich Ellis (Stars Below, Twilight Zone), and Grace Allison (Wander)! MEMORIAL: IMAGINARY FIENDS is a brand-new, digital-only return to the colorful world of the original series.
“The first Memorial miniseries that Rich Ellis and I did was always intended to be the beginning of Em’s story, not the end,” said series co-creator and writer Roberson. “With Imaginary Fiends, we have the opportunity to pick up where the first miniseries left off, and explore more of the world (or WORLDS) that she and the other characters inhabit. This time around, we visit the Land of Maybe, and see what effect its destruction has had on the real world, in a story that’s all about childhood, parenthood, imagination, memory, and loss. Also, talking cats and dragons.”
Launching today, MEMORIAL: IMAGINARY FIENDS will be told across nine eight-page installments, released biweekly for only 99¢.
“I’ve long believed that digital distribution was destined to play a large part in the future of comics, and was delighted when IDW suggested that we structure the next Memorial storyline as a digital original serial,” Roberson continued. “Distributing the serial digitally through the IDW Comics app and Comixology gives us the opportunity not only to provide more story to readers who might have enjoyed the first Memorial miniseries, but also to reach new readers who have never encountered these characters before.”
Returning to a world where memories lost to time are being recovered, MEMORIAL is a feast for the eyes and the mind and IMAGINARY FIENDS is the next chapter in this thrilling story!
IMAGINARY FIENDS kicks off today, but the first MEMORIAL hardcover collection is also available now!
MEMORIAL HC ($24.99, FC, 152 pages) ISBN #: 978-1-61377-354-3, Diamond code: JUN120412.
