CHEW #30 GETS DEVOURED

Issue sold out, to be reprinted in January collection

CHEW #30, which closes out the “Space Cakes” story arc, sold out at the distributor level on the same day of its release, November 28. Fans of the series, by John Layman and Rob Guillory, should rush to their local comic book stores to pick up issue #30, which will be reprinted only in CHEW VOLUME SIX: SPACE CAKES, the trade paperback out on December 19, and volume three of the CHEW: THE OMNIVORE EDITION, out in March.

CHEW #30 is a milestone issue, the halfway point in a planned 60-issue run of the popular dramedy about a family with a very special relationship with food. (It is in development as a television series with Showtime.) Comic Book Resources, noting the series’ layered storytelling, says of the issue in a four-star review: “You’ll read it once for the roller coaster ride, and then immediately read it a second time in a different light, knowing the impact the issue’s outcome places on the earlier events.”

The second half of the series begins with CHEW #31 — and a funeral. It will be in stores on January 23. Readers should get their pre-orders in now to be sure they get a copy of what is sure to be another fast-selling issue.

CHEW is also available digitally on comiXology, Graphic.ly, and ComicsPlus.

A couple of number one issues from Marvel hit your local shop on Wednesday. Astonishing X-Men Annual #1 gets the Annual treatment. This issue doesn’t promise any new characters or a “death”. What it will provide is some good ol’ fashion storytelling. FF (2012 2nd Series) #1 puts together the oddball team of Medusa, She-Hulk, Miss Thing and Ant-Man in lieu of Fantastic Four’s absence. This series, with this lineup should last about 12 issues max. Not a Debbie downer, just truth here. So with that, let’s have fun with this lineup and find the first appearance’s of this “stellar” cast. We’ll go from the least significant comic to the comic that should be on your Christmas list. Miss Thing, we first saw her in Heroes Reborn: Remnants #1 (2000). You could probably find this comic at your comic shop sitting in the 25 cent bin. The She-Hulk character is one of those characters that never seem to catch on, but yet Marvel seems to always cram her down our throats. She’s a good supporting player, but not a solo player. Hence why a graded 9.8 Cgc Savage She-Hulk #1 (1980) can be bought right now for only $125. Too many grades at that level and not enough demand as well. Medusa’s first appeared in Fantastic Four #36 (1965). You can purchase this on Ebay, a 9.2 CGC Graded for $575. Medusa is not a character in demand and if you invest in her first appearance, you will have to wait a while for a payback to occur on your investment. On the contrary is Ant-Man’s first appearance in Tales to Astonish #35 from 1962 (in costume). If you haven’t been paying attention, Ant-Man will finally be making his appearance on the big screen. This movie will be huge (no pun intended). The investment here comes in around the 45k mark for a graded CGC 9.2. A solid buy right now considering how much potential upside there is to this comic, definitely a worthy investment for your collection.

A new villain to check out graces the pages of Thor God of Thunder (2012) #2 this week. The “God Butcher!” Fun times we hope as Marvel NOW! introduces new characters to their catalog. Speaking of new, the Lizard-Ock? Check out Captain America and Black Widow (2012) #639 for more on that. Ultimate X-Men (2011 Marvel) #19 starts a new direction as a new epic storyline starts up.

Be sure to check out DC Comics’ New 52 Savage Hawkman (2011) #14 as Hawkman and Green Arrow meet for the first time.

There are a few number one issues to definitely check out this week, Masks (2012 Dynamite) #1, Mortifera (2012 Sea Lion Books) #1, Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi Prisoner of Bogan (2012 Dark Horse) #1 and Witch Doctor Malpractice (2012) #1.

That’s it for this week. Invest wisely.

Submit or Perish! This Is The AGE OF ULTRON

Superstars Brian Michael Bendis & Bryan Hitch Set The Marvel Universe On A Path of No Return

New York. NY—November 19, 2012— This March, enter the darkest days of the Marvel Universe as Earth’s Mightiest fight for survival in Age of Ultron #1 as they’re faced with only two choices—Submit Or Perish! From the blockbuster creative team of Brian Michael Bendis (All New X-Men, Avengers, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man), Bryan Hitch (Ultimates, Fantastic Four), Carlos Pacheco (Uncanny X-Men) & Brandon Peterson (AvX: VS) comes an event years in the making pitting the Marvel Universe against one of their greatest threats! Ultron, a deadly sentient robot created by founding Avenger Hank Pym who turned on his creator to achieve his twisted  objective…the utter destruction of humanity. Now that Ultron has conquered, enslaving most of the world’s Super Heroes, it’s up to a small group of resistance fighters—including Invisible Woman, Taskmaster, Beast, Emma Frost, She-Hulk, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Moon Knight—to find a way overcome darkness and bring hope back a world that has suddenly lost everything. Once this landmark ten-issue event concludes, the reverberations will be felt in every corner of the Marvel Universe, leaving no hero or villain unscathed.

“From the very first page, readers will see the unthinkable – Ultron has won,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “In a world where we’ve learned to depend on technology to sustain us, what would happen if one villain found a way to turn it against us?  In order to survive, the world’s greatest super heroes will have to make drastic choices whose ramifications will be felt throughout the Marvel Universe.  This is a story so huge that we’re shipping the entire ten issue series from March through June so fans don’t have to wait more than a few weeks between issues.”

Earlier this  year on Free Comic Book Day, fans all over the world experienced Age of Ultron #0.1, a special lead-in to this event by Bendis and Hitch, that hinted at the plans Ultron has in store for the Marvel Universe.

“In the vein of Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Invasion and Civil War, Age of Ultron is a massive Marvel Universe-spanning Event,” explained Bendis. “One of our most famous villains, Ultron, the super artificial intelligence, has fulfilled his destiny and taken the Earth. This story touches every corner of the Marvel Universe and will have an amazing effect on things going forward. We have taken the time to do this right- everything is gorgeous, every page matters, and most of all- something I’m very proud of- is that it will be shipping at a furious pace. Every day for the last year and a half people have been asking me when this story will come and I’m thrilled to announce that it is here.”

Can the remaining heroes of the Marvel Universe scramble to find a glimmer of hope or some way to fight back. Scattered across the ruined Earth, they’ll have to journey to all corners and find a way to defeat the robotic revolution…no matter the cost. But do they realize that the cost of saving Earth might be their very souls?

This March, Brian Michael Bendis, Bryan Hitch, Carlos Pacheco & Brandon Peterson bring fans the event they’ve been clamoring for in Age of Ultron!

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=193]

Captain America (2012 7th Series) #1 kicks off with some heavyweight creative names attached. Names like Romita, Janson, Remender and White. With creators like this on board, we’re probably in for a fun ride! Captain America first appeared in his self titled book called Captain America Comics #1 in 1941. With Jack Kirby and Joe Simon at the helm, this comic can easily fetch over a quarter of a million dollars. Here’s a funny thing fans, this comic is undervalued right now. Come back in 10 years and this comic will be worth 3 to four times its value now. Captain America is the modern day Superman for Marvel right now.  Indestructible Hulk (2012) #1 comes out with its own heavyweight supporting cast as well. Waid and Yu are your team here. The Incredible Hulk #1 (1962) was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. A nicely graded copy of this comic can get an easy $50,000 and up. The value for the Hulkster (no, not Terry) is right where it should be.

Staying on the number one issue theme here we arrive to Judge Dredd (2012 IDW) #1. The IDW company has been putting out quality comics for some time now. The character Judge Dredd is the equivalent of Marvel’s Spidey or DC’s Batman. No not here in the states, but from the U.K.

The Dredd character is the baddest ass hero/vigilante to ever come from the U.K…..ever. Now IDW will give the fans a new ongoing that will probably blow the doors off and the collector should be on the ground floor before Judge Dredd becomes as popular as he was back in the 80’s/90’s. Dredd’s first appearance comes in 2000AD #2 from 1977. An ungraded 9.4 copy in April of this newspaper comic sold for $1000. Extremely undervalued here for the premiere badass of the U.K.

Marvel NOW! paying some immediate dividends with the new restart. Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #2 introduces some new bad guys. First a group called the CIRCLE, which is made up of Mech-Knights and a villain name Black Exoskeleton. Fun times ahead! We hope…..

Journey into Mystery (2011 3rd Series) #646 puts the focus on The Lady Sif. Incidentally, Sif first appeared in Journey into Mystery, but from 1964 in issue #102. This comic will command about $500. It’s a little steep for a character like Sif, but still worth it because of Kirby and Lee’s name on it.

With beginning’s there is an end. This week Avengers (2010 4th Series) #34 will end its 4th series run in grand fashion, so don’t miss it!

Some independent books to check out this week are Electric Youth Special (2012 Big Dog Ink) #0, Adventures of Augusta Wind (2012 IDW) #1, Clone (2012 Image) #1 and Comeback (2012 Image) #1.

That’s it for this week. Invest wisely.

Marvel NOW! kicking into high gear with four number one issues coming your way this week. By comparison we are going to throw the original number one issue together with the new directional Marvel NOW! campaign. Just how long will the latest reboot, relaunch, reset or whatever you want to call it last this time around? We’ll see…..

We start off with a personal favorite of InvestComics’ that has graced this website numerous times. Thor #126 (1966) matches up with the new Thor God of Thunder (2012) #1 comic. Journey into Mystery with Thor #125 dropped the Journey title and became just Thor with issue number 126, so essentially Thor #126 makes for the number one issue. This comic has everything a collector could possibly want. The pencils and cover are by Jack Kirby and it’s written by Stan Lee. And reiterating it’s the true number one issue of Thor. A graded copy 9.8 sold for $13,000 and it will continue to hold its value. There is absolutely no downside here.

Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) has climbed steadily throughout its collector career, so much so that it topped a whopping $500,000 for a graded 9.6. Investing in any key X-Men issue is almost certain to pay dividends down the line. The number one issue was done by the same tandem of Kirby and Lee. Look for this issue to continue its steady rise with a top very soon. The 9.6 just may be that, the top….for now. Look for the All New X-men (2012) #1 coming your way this week with the original team. Ah… everything old is new again.

Although the weaker of the bunch this week goes to Fantastic Four #1 (1961), the price of a graded 9.4 says otherwise. How about a cool $300,000? Not too shabby for a subpar movie run and countless storyline changes. But that is just the problem of why this comic comes in as the weakest of the 3 Golden Age number one comics mentioned this week. By no means though is this comic NOT a buyable comic. It’s the mere fact that it seems the Fantastic Four cannot find its place anymore. Constant roster changes, costume changes, Status quo, death of Human Torch and so forth does not bode well for the investor. Yes other comics have done this too, but they continue to stay within the mainstream with movies, cartoons, etc.  Want a big positive on this book? Once again, Kirby and Lee are the main fixtures here! So when you check out the new Fantastic Four (2012 4th Series) #1 remember that Marvel’s first family have gone through some stuff and to cut them a break. This series might be the one that finally puts them back to some relevant standing within the Marvel Universe and the collectors market (Bronze Age).

The final comic of the new Marvel NOW! line X-Men Legacy (2012 2nd Series) #1has everything in common with the Thor #126 as discussed earlier, but fails in comparison at the same time.  X-Men Legacy began with X-Men Legacy #208 from the previously titled X-Men #207. The comparisons seize there because one can buy X-Men Legacy #208 in a 50 cent bin at your local comic shop. With a David Finch cover and John Romita Jr. pencils, it does make for an attractive book. Happy hunting!

While Marvel does their thing, DC Comics is on the second leg of their tour. The big storyline with DC is the Death of the Family. With some of the storyline spilling over into other books, it’s a usual sign that ONE of these comics will be short printed and thus sought after, thus creating a price hike. Will Suicide Squad (2011 4th Series) #14 this week be THAT book? Who knows? Be sure to stay on top of your crossover books not to miss anything.

DC Comics entire New 52 line will hinge on one comic and this week you will be able to know the secret history of the New 52 just like that! That’s right, Team 7 (2012 DC) #2 will tell readers exactly where, how and maybe why the New 52 got started. Seems like a big deal right? Wouldn’t really know that because of how low key this issue is. Maybe we’ll get an aftereffect on this one. Be sure to be there at the epicenter when this hits though. Don’t worry, you won’t be hurt. If anything maybe you’ll get a real good story here that won’t mean jack in another year.

Invincible fans rejoice. Invincible (2003) #97 will deliver the origin of Zandale Randolph. This will lead up to the much anticipated 100th issue.

Big Dog Ink continues to crank out some of the industry’s best comics to date. This week will be no exception with Joan of Arc From the Ashes (2012 Big Dog Ink) #1.

And finally, in recent days new Iron Man 3 action figures were coming out and a certain character may have made the cut. Rescue. Know her? She’s Potter Potts all dressed up in some hot Iron Man armor. All anatomically correct too! Is that really necessary though? Just asking. Anyway, if the Rescue action figure is an indication that we may see her in the movie, it’s a safe bet to pick up the Iron Man (2009) #10 issue which is Rescues first appearance. This comic could probably be found in that same bin as the X-Men Legacy #208. And while we’re at it here, since the new Iron Man 3 movie is based on the Iron Man #1 comic from 2005 (Extremis storyline), don’t forget to try and get your paws on that one. It ranges from $8 – $15 on Ebay right now.

That’s it for this week, invest wisely.

The Future of UNCANNY X-MEN Is Marvel NOW!

Superstars Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo Redefine Mutantkind!

New York. NY—November 9, 2012— This February, Cyclops is back in full force in Uncanny X-Men #1, kicking off the all-new ongoing series from the blockbuster creative team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Chris Bachalo! As part of Marvel NOW!, Uncanny X-Men  joins a number of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!

The true flagship book of the X-Men returns. In the wake of the Phoenix, the world has changed and is torn on exactly what Cyclops and his team of X-Men are – visionary revolutionaries or dangerous terrorists? Whatever the truth, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magneto, and Magik are out in the world gathering up new mutants and redefining the name Uncanny X-Men.

“What Brian and Chris have planned for Cyclops’ team in the post-‘Avengers VS. X-Men’ landscape is nothing short of its adjective, ‘uncanny’,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment.  “Mutantkind has been going through a reEvolution over the past couple years. The pressing question now is, who will lead them into the future?”

Marvel NOW! is the culmination of Marvel ReEvolution, the groundbreaking new initiative to evolve the comic book experience through innovation. With Fearless Defenders, Marvel NOW! ensures fans will discover an entirely new perspective in the adventures of the Defenders.

Uncanny X-Men will be the one-stop shop for these very important characters in the mutant [corner of the] Marvel Universe and the Marvel Universe proper,” said writer Brian Michael Bendis in an interview with Marvel.com. “I’m very lucky that I get to write All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men at the same time. I can examine this fascinating part of the Marvel Universe from vastly different angles. I can’t think of a time where the mutant part of the Marvel Universe has been more exciting. Every character is so complex and there are so many characters interacting. Literally anything could happen.”

Each issue of Uncanny X-Men includes a code for a free digital copy on the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices). Additionally, each issue of Uncanny X-Men features special augmented reality content available exclusive through the Marvel AR app – including cover recaps, behind the scenes features and more that add value to your reading experience at no additional cost.

“Not only does every book with the Marvel NOW! logo feature a new superstar creative team and blockbuster story, but they also come with all-new incentives for our retailer partners,” explained David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales, Marvel Entertainment.. “We want to make sure every comic shop nationwide is fully stocked to meet the high demand we’re already seeing for Marvel NOW! And want to make sure their voices are heard throughout this exciting time. Stay tuned for more news on how Marvel will be working directly with retailers to make sure our programs address their needs.”

An all-new direction! An all-new team! All-new threats! This is Uncanny X-Men NOW!

This February, Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo redefine what it means to be a mutant in Uncanny X-Men!

The Future of FEARLESS DEFENDERS Is Marvel NOW!

Superstars Cullen Bunn & Will Sliney Bring the Defenders to the Next Level!

New York. NY—November 9, 2012— This February, the Defenders come together again in Fearless Defenders #1, kicking off the all-new ongoing series from the amazing creative team of writer Cullen Bunn (Venom, Sixth Gun, The Fearless)  and artist Will Sliney (MacGyver, Star Wars)! As part of Marvel NOW!, Fearless Defenders  joins a number of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!

Valkyrie trying to make amends for her mistakes—mistakes that put the entire world in jeopardy—is tasked with choosing a group of heroic women to fight by her side, not from the women of Asgard, but from the heroic women of Earth.  Circumstance will provide her with an unlikely partner in this task, as she is joined by private investigator Misty Knight. With very different points of view and very different approaches, they will both find their definitions of heroism and honor put to the test by the women they lead and the challenges they face.

“The Defenders has always been defined by a team roster that’s as unusual as the threats it faces, and we’re about to take it up several notches,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment.  “Whether, your problem is nasty Ninjas, murderous trolls or shambling zombies, there’s no one better suited to defend you that this all-new, all-female team.”

Marvel NOW! is the culmination of Marvel ReEvolution, the groundbreaking new initiative to evolve the comic book experience through innovation. With Fearless Defenders, Marvel NOW! ensures fans will discover an entirely new perspective in the adventures of the Defenders.

“Fearless Defenders will chronicle the adventures of the female heroes of the Marvel Universe. There will be a central team of characters that will form over time, but the cast will rotate to some degree from arc to arc. This will be a team like none other in Marvel NOW,” said writer Cullen Bunn in an interview with Marvel.com. “I think readers will have a good time speculating on who will be joining this version of the Defenders. The team up of Valkyrie and Misty Knight is probably unexpected for most people, and that’s just one of the surprises I have in store. This will be an offbeat team, and they’ll be facing some bewildering threats.”

Each issue of Fearless Defenders features special augmented reality content available exclusive through the Marvel AR app – including cover recaps, behind the scenes features and more that add value to your reading experience at no additional cost.

Justin Jordan’s LUTHER STRODE returns to Image this January

THE MAN. THE GEEK. THE LEGEND.

New LUTHER STRODE mini-series launches in January

The Image Comics mini-series THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE ended in a baptism of blood as former geeky weakling Luther Strode discovered the depths of the powers he developed with “The Hercules Method” of strengthening — and with a promise of more mayhem.

The critically lauded mini-series catapulted creators Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore into the consciousness of comics readers. Now they’re bringing their unlikely (anti-?)hero back with THE LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE, a mini-series set five years after STRANGE TALENT. The first issue will be in stores on December 5.
Luther has systematically been taking out bad guys, and those left have a plan to put an end to the seemingly invulnerable vigilante. The development means the violence in LEGEND is amped up even higher than the not-inconsiderable level of gore in STRANGE TALENT. In an interview at IGN, the creators expressed, however, that their wish isn’t to glorify violence.
“While the hyper-violence and how we’re desensitized to violence in comics was one of the points of the first one, we had to be careful not to, you know, desensitize people to the ridiculous violence,” explained writer Jordan.
Moore, whose task it is to draw the hyper-violence (Felipe Sobreiro gives both LUTHER series their colors — with red dominating) supplied some details: “Within the first two issues there have already been about 12-15 dudes eviscerated in some ridiculous and fantastic fashion. And that’s not including any off panel maiming! Manhole cover decapitation, exploding heads, hearts ripped out, body severing karate chops. I tell you, we’ve got it all. ”
In a story at USA Today, the team revealed some of the demons haunting Luther, who has realized he has become everything The Librarian, his arch-nemesis in STRANGE TALENT, said he was: a killer who uses might as right. LEGEND, said Jordan, is a story of redemption — or the lack of it. Jordan and Moore also talked to and showed off some new LUTHER STRODE art at Multiversity Comics, Comic Book Resources and Newsarama.
THE LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE is a full-color, six-issue comics mini-series. Issue #1 (OCT120461) and #2 (NOV120564) are available for pre-order at comic book stores now.

DC Entertainment Digital Comic Books Now Available on Kindle Store, iBookStore and Nook Store

DC Comics’ Entire Line-up, Including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and

Many Others, Now Available for Direct Download from All Major e-Bookstores

DC Entertainment, the #1 comic book publisher in the U.S., announced today its entire line of periodical comic books are now available for download from the top three e-bookstores including Kindle Store, iBookstore and NOOK Store™.  The precedent setting new digital availability brings bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, including JUSTICE LEAGUE, BATMAN, SUPERMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, ACTION COMICS, BATGIRL, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FABLES and AMERICAN VAMPIRE, among many others, to an even broader audience of digital readers.

“As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it’s important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and graphic novels and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that,” said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment. “We’re very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores.”

DC Entertainment is now the only comic book publisher to offer its periodical line-up across all major e-bookstore platforms.  The deals reinforce a long track record of digital comics industry leadership and innovation from DC Entertainment that dates back to its game-changing decision to make its entire line available same-day digital with the launch of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 in Sept. 2011. That launch is widely seen as reinvigorating the comic book industry, and has led to increased sales of both digital and print comics.

Lee continued, “We were the first to offer our entire comic book line same-day digital and now we are the first to offer fans the convenience of multiple download options.”

In addition to now being available for direct download through the top three e-bookstores, DC Entertainment will continue to deliver periodical comics online at www.readdcentertainment.com, through the DC Comics and Vertigo apps, and all comiXology platforms.

Prior to this announcement only DC Entertainment graphic novels were available through the top three e-bookstores.

KATANA & VIBE get ongoing. LEMIRE/SORRENTINO take over GREEN ARROW

DC really likes to keep things at 52, right? Well, after a few cancellations, they were coming up short for the new year. According to MTV, they’re fixing that. Spinning out of the recently announced JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, KATANA and VIBE 9of all people) will be getting their own titles. That leaves just one more to add to get them back up to 52. Maybe the new Snyder/Lee Superman title?
Plus, Animal Man’s Jeff lemire, having already made JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK one of the better books in the new 52, is set to take over the floundering GREEN ARROW, when current writer Ann Nocenti leaves for KATANA.

Anyway, here’s the news from DC’s blog:

MTV announced that in addition to the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1, February will also mark the launch of two new series: KATANA and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE.

Spinning out of BIRDS OF PREY, KATANA will be written by Ann Nocenti (CATWOMAN) and illustrated by Alex Sanchez (JSA CLASSIFIED). And with a premiere issue being co-plotted by Geoff Johns, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE will come to you from the creative team of writer Andrew Kreisberg (ARROW) and artist Pete Woods (LEGION LOST).

As for JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1? MTV let you know that there will be 52 variant covers of the issue available when it arrives in stores. These variant covers will each feature the flags of all fifty U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

But there’s more! MTV also announced that starting in February, GREEN ARROW will be getting a new creative team! Kicking off with issue #17, GREEN ARROW will be written by Jeff Lemire (ANIMAL MAN; JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK) and drawn by Andrea Sorrentino (I, VAMPIRE).

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 11-7-12.

Now that DC’s Universe is in full flux with all of the number one and number zero issues out of the way, we come to another relaunch of sorts. Marvel NOW! is starting to makes its way into our little comic book collecting world. It’s become an absurdity at this point with the revamping of the heroes and villains to the point it’s very laughable. Change is necessary within everyday life. Change is good. That said, too much constant change within the “entertainment” genre is not always a good thing……

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=188]

This week Marvel Now! goes with two restarts in Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #1 and Deadpool (2012 3rd Series) #1. Yes it’s Marvel Comics turn at the money grab. Here’s a bold prediction. Iron Man will go back to the original numbering when it matters…..to sell books! Well maybe not such a bold prediction, but we all do know that’s going to happen. As for Deadpool, well he was at one point the most over used Marvel Universe character right next to Wolverine. What? We have poor sales in Moon Knight? Throw Wolverine in there! Punisher sales down a little? Throw Deadpool in there! So if you are reading this right now it means one of two things. A: You are a comic fan and you just like to see what’s what or B: You are a comic book collector, which brings us to the first appearances of Wade and Tony. Wade’s first appearance came during a time of epic comic book collecting in the sense that many thought by buying multiple copies of certain comics you were going to retire at the age of 35. Not the case. Actually, STILL isn’t the case. But having fun talking about this stuff in today’s climate will never stop. The days of buying an abundance of number one issues or special foil/3D/gatefold/etc comics are long gone. As said in many articles on InvestComics before, there is a wiser/savvy investor within the collectors market these days. If you were a product of this era in the early 90’s then you probably, most likely have about 10 copies of Deadpool’s first appearance in New Mutants #98 (1991). If you do not already own this comic, then you probably should. And incidentally, X-Men (2010 2nd Series) #38 this week has Domino appearing in those pages which also happens to first appear in New Mutants #98….so when all is said and done (whenever or whatever that means), Deadpool will be left standing with his rightful place in the comic book world. Whether you like him or not, Deadpool will be around for quite some time. In contrast, Iron Man was one of those characters always finding and needling his way throughout the Marvel Universe. Never really a “top tier” guy like Spidey or Hulk. He has however found his niche, much to do with the films than anything else. The Iron Man comics still seem to be trying to find their way, so much so that just as the Avengers film came out they tried changing Iron Man’s armor altogether. That lasted a hot minute, then back to the regular suit, now another relaunch. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Well that’s the climate of the comics today, deal. Iron Man’s first appearance came in the pages of Tales of Suspense #39 (1963). If you do not own THIS comic, well the ship has sailed for you and you’ll be paying a pretty hefty fee if you want it, although still a good long term investment here. In comparison, Deadpool would be a LONG LONG term investment. Both books nice to have in your collection, but Tony is the prize here.

Speaking of nice books to have in your collection, how about what Avenging Spider-Man (2011) #14 is offering up? Within the pages of Avenging Spidey we have Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy! Cool! Bringing the fun back in comic books! So what’s to own here you ask? How about the first appearance of Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy? I know, you’re saying “huh?” Yes, that’s right. Just buy the Devil Dinosaur #1 (1978) comic and open up to the first page. Writer, Penciler and Editor; Jack “King” Kirby! The legend himself put his stamp all over this comic (series) and you should have this in your collection. Nuff said.

The sleeper of the week has to go to Shadowman (2012 4th Series) #1. Valiant Comics are making their comeback and Shadowman looks to propel itself right into the mix of things. Look for Shadowman’s alter ego first appearance as a cameo (Jack Boniface) in X-O Manowar #4 (1992) and as Shadowman in Shadowman #1 (1992). Two comics to own before the series takes off as a huge success.

In what seems to be one of the most disturbing comic book covers of all time, Colder (2012 Dark Horse) #1 will be a sellout due to the cover alone as curiosity will get the best of most fans. Grab it before you miss out. Other number one issues to check out this week are Freelancers (2012 Boom) #1 and 47 Ronin (2012) #1.

That’s it for this week, invest wisely.

Marvel & the Brooklyn Nets Unveil FIRST Super Hero IN nba history!

Marvel & the Brooklyn Nets Unveil

FIRST Super Hero IN nba history!

BrooklyKnight Debuted Tonight in the Brooklyn Nets First Game at Barclays Center

–Brooklyn’s New Super Hero—

BROOKLYN (Nov. 3, 2012) – Marvel Entertainment and the Brooklyn Nets are proud to announce the creation of Brooklyn’s new Super Hero and the first one in NBA history. Enter BrooklyKnight, protector of Brooklyn’s hometown team, defender of New York’s largest and most courageous borough, and ruler of Barclays Center.

BrooklyKnight made his debut tonight in the Brooklyn Nets’ first-ever regular season game in their new home, Barclays Center, against the Toronto Raptors. Before the start of the game, the BrooklyKnight boldly landed at center court to inspire his team and rally the crowd. To commemorate the first appearance of this historic new sports icon, Marvel Custom Solutions worked with the Nets to create BrooklyKnight #1, an all-new 32-page comic book by Jason Aaron, writer of Thor: God of Thunder and Wolverine & The X-Men and illustrated by artist Mike Deodato of Amazing Spider-Man and New Avengers fame. All guests at tonight’s game received copies of the limited edition comic book.

“Brooklyn now has a new Super Hero to call its own,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center. “BrooklyKnight is a superior combination of strength, power, and confidence — sounds just like Brooklyn to me.”

“Marvel Entertainment has outdone itself with its newest Super Hero creation for the Brooklyn Nets,” Brooklyn Nets Chairman Christophe Charlier said. “We are honored to have collaborated with the company of the world’s mightiest Super Heroes.”

The BrooklyKnight will appear at all Brooklyn Nets home games and support his team against the invasion of opponents. He is equipped to handle almost any threat with a protective metal B on his chest, metal knee, elbow, and face coverings, defined muscles, including a six-pack, and a multi-functional cape.

“As a Brooklynite and a hardcore hoops fan, for me to get the opportunity to help create a Super Hero for my home borough’s new team was a dream come true,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “Working with the Nets staff, we have created a team Super Hero that is unlike anything the NBA has ever seen; a timeless character who can stand shoulder to shoulder with icons like Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Thor. Let’s go, Nets!”

“Forged from the blood, sweat and tears of Brooklyn itself — always ready to defend his home and defeat any challenger — all hail the BrooklyKnight!” exclaimed Bill Rosemann, Editor, Marvel Custom Solutions. “When Nets fans meet their guardian, they will immediately know that the House of Ideas has once again unleashed a hero who will soon be known all over the world for his nobility, grit, and strength. Brooklyn, your champion is here!”

All guests at the Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic game at Barclays Center on Sunday, November 11, will receive a limited edition BrooklyKnight trading card, courtesy of Marvel Custom Solutions and the Brooklyn Nets.

Steve Ditko’s GORGO resurfaces at IDW

Alert: Ditko’s GORGO Surfaces!

No One is Safe from GORGO’s Grasp!

[Ditko Monsters Gorgo Cover]San Diego, CA (October 30, 2012) – This January, the world is set to come under vicious attack. As ocean waters tremble and churn, undersea volcanoes violently erupt, and the giant lizard monster Gorgo rises once again to terrorize a woefully unprepared populace!
IDW Publishing and Yoe Books are thrilled to announce DITKO MONSTERS: GORGO! The first in a series, to be followed by DITKO MONSTERS: KONGA!, this volume collects the complete run of Ditko’s Gorgo: over 200 pages of explosive, destructive Gorgo action. This hardcover volume is absolutely packed with towering monster art by the inimitable comics legend STEVE DITKO!
Drawn at the same time Ditko was doing landmark work on Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, Gorgo was ripped from the reels of its cinematic origins and thrust into the pulpy comics spotlight. Seemingly unstoppable, Gorgo takes all comers as he stomps across the globe in adventures penned by fan-favorite writer Joe Gill with book design and an introduction by Eisner Award-winner, Craig Yoe.
“This is the third Ditko book I’ve had the great pleasure to produce, the first two were The Art of Ditko and The Creativity of Ditko,” says Yoe. “As proud of I am of those, this one may be the most F-U-N fun yet, because it’s all about a ginormous, scaly-skinned, dinosaur-like, anti-social, city-smashing MONSTER. Ditko obviously had a blast doing these mad-cool comics, smashingly putting the “GO” in Gorgo!”
A bona fide art legend, a vicious monster laying waste to highly populated urban areas, and an oversized, full-color hardback? Ladies and gentlemonsters, DITKO MONSTERS: GORGO! has it all!
DITKO MONSTERS: GORGO! (FC, 224 pages, $34.99) is in stores 1/30/13. Diamond code: NOV120414
