Comic Broker Report – February 2013

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( February )

By Topher Seal

I just cannot believe the online market for current comics.  People are throwing down some serious cash during poor economic times for unproven, highly speculative books.  Now I won’t recommend that you go and spend nearly 200 dollars for Peter Panzerfaust 1 or Saga 1 or any Thought Bubble or Hastings Variant but I do suggest you think about the future and put your money in wise investments.  Just because a comic property has been optioned by Hollywood or has a print run under 5k doesn’t mean it belongs in your fireproof long box.  A wise investor studies the market relentlessly and can recognize a bad deal when he/she sees one.

Don’t Buy: Thor 344, buy this instead:

Thor 347  ( First appearance of Kurse )

images

Kurse will be in the next Thor movie and while collectors are already hoarding 344 this issue might be the sleeper.

Note: Kurse also has one of the greatest deaths in comics and that issue is very affordable!

Don’t Buy Justice League of America 183-185,

1

buy this instead:

The Forever People 1 ( First full Darkseid )

i2

So a JLA movie will be coming out to set up the future of the DC Universe’s film franchises and there is already massive speculation as to who will be in the film and what storyline it will follow.  Many are buying up issues 183-185 assuming that elements of this story will be the basis for the film.  That’s too risky to drop the kind of money these books are demanding.  Plus the moment that info was released Darkseid became the new Thanos and appearances have quadrupled in price.  Guides list Darkseid’s first appearance as Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen 134 and his second as 135 but both appear to be cameos.  His first full appearance is in The Forever People 1 and I would also scoop New Gods 2.

Don’t buy The Sixth Gun 1,2,3,4,5,6,……

Buy this instead:

The Sixth Gun FCBD 2011

onise_45

This wonderful comic by Cullen Bunn has been optioned and is set to film for TV.  Here is an example of a property worth investing in.  If it’s done right it’s a sure hit.  Cullen Bunn is a superstar writer in the making and this is his best work to date.  Issue 1 is fast becoming a 50.00 book but eventually people will realize that the first appearance of The Sixth Gun was in the 2011 FCBD issue.

More Cullen Bunn,

Immortal Weapons 2

imawges

Early works by this amazing writer are sure to see significant gains in upcoming months.  This comic is part of a 5 issues limited series written by a variety of the industries best.  Mr. Bunn wrote issue 2.

Deadpool 1000, The Damned ( good luck finding these! ), Captain America 616 Variant and his first published comic work in…

Buy:

American Vampire 1 ( 2010 Diamond Retailer’s Summit Edition, cover by JIM LEE )

Scott Snyder has quickly become the hottest writer in comics. His resume may be short but it’s full of quality writing.  In an era full of talented writers it can be very difficult to stand out but Mr. Snyder has done it.  Collectors are flocking to his Detective Comics run and they should but there are few other comics he wrote worth picking up.  Iron man noir 1-4 is a good place to start and those books can be had for pennies. I have previously mentioned the Human Torch 70th Variant One-Shot ( his earliest pro work ) and now this issue variant with a Jim Lee cover!

I would also buy issues 2-5 and the 2nd print for issue 1

Buy: Iron Man 10 ( 2nd Print )

InvincibleIronMan_10_SecondPrintingCover

Another film rumor about the appearance of Pepper Potts Rescue Armor appearing in Iron Man 3 has been circulating the web.  Will it happen? If it does this is the one one to buy!

Buy: Masters of the Universe 1 ( 2nd Print )

images

Another great second print that’s tough to find and worth every penny!  Look in back to find out why Invincible collectors!

Sell: Peter Panzerfaust 1,2,3,4

This over hyped comic is well written but poorly illustrated. With a TV show from the BBC in the works Image has created a nice big bubble! Trust me when I say it’s not the next WD so sell high!

Hold: Green Wake 7

ww

The true first appearance of Peter Panzerfaust  will have no ceiling if the show is a hit and it will cost you between 2-10 dollars instead of 200.

Sell: Revival 1 and all issue 1 variants

Hold: Image FCBD Sampler

1173347

Sell: Fatale issue 1

Buy: The Walking Dead 92 ( First Jesus )

iemages

It seems this new character is going to be a major player and we have all seen the value of key WD first appearances.  Oh and Fatale first appearance is here too.  Even if you have to pay out it’s worth it in this case.

Buy:  Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth, Nowhere Men 1, Non-Player, Multiple Warheads & Prophet 21 ( variant only ).

BLUE CHIP BOOK OF THE MONTH

Tales of Suspense 50 ( First Mandarin )

ima44ges

Personally I think the Mandarin is a terrible villain but movies from Marvel turn crud ( whiplash ) into back issue gold and this book will be no different. His first appearance is not mired in confusion like Darkseid and the actor playing the master of the rings is one of Hollywood’s best!

Ant-Man, Doctor Strange confirmed for MARVEL “Phase 3” Movies

In an interview with MTV,  Marvel’s Kevin Feige discussed the Marvel’s Cinematic Universe’s “Phase 3” which include the previously announced Edgar DEFEND2011012Wright production of ANT-MAN:

“‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three,” Marvel’s Kevin Feige told MTV News during our recent interview. “Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie.”

“I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004,” he continued. “He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

And the often considered DOCTOR STRANGE:

“‘Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them,” he confirmed. “He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”

Both characters have ties to THE AVENGERS teams, but considering both films would be produced AFTER Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS sequel, it’s too early to tell if they will ever be included in further Avengers films. Though, Marvel’s movie-verse is all about cameos, cross-overs, and shared universe tie-ins.

IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products Open THE X-FILES!

Do you want to believe? FOX and IDW announce a new X-FILES ongoing series, picking up where the second X-FILES Movie left off.

IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products Open THE X-FILES!
The Landmark Series Finds a New Publishing Outlet in 2013

San Diego, CA (January 28, 2013) – IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products are thrilled to announce a partnership to publish an exciting series of works based on the legendary series, THE X-FILES. IDW’s publishing plan includes reprinting collections of the classic issues published intermittently from 1995 through 2009, as well as creating brand-new X-FILES comics to launch in June 2013. Over two movies and two hundred television episodes, THE X-FILES, is a juggernaut of science fiction-tinged intrigue, unique characters and carefully constructed stories. The show’s popularity raged into the comic world, seeing successful series mounted by publishers Topps and Wildstorm. Despite this, new publishing has not been available since 2009’s joint Wildstorm/IDW crossover – 30 Days of Night/The X-Files – leaving fans without a venue for the continuing sequential adventures of Mulder and Scully… until now. “THE X-FILES is a classic property that helped redefine fans’ expectations for the science-fiction and horror genres,” said IDW’s President/Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “The possibilities for new comic stories are virtually unlimited!” “The fans of THE X-FILES have remained loyal to the series since its conclusion. What better way to continue the show’s legacy and give back to them than through new stories in a different medium,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products. “IDW has worked with a number of our Fox properties, and we know they’re going to do great things with these iconic characters.” In 2013, fans of THE X-FILES will want to believe in new comics from IDW Publishing! The home of successful kindred series like 30 Days of Night, Doctor Who, and Locke & Key, to name a few, IDW is excited to bring the enduring legacy of THE X-FILES back to comics. “Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like THE X-FILES, and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop.”

“It’s exciting to be able to work on this comic as I am a fan of the show. Probably the funnest part is going back over the episodes again for inspiration (and just enjoying them also
),” commented writer Green, “Plenty of ideas popping up just working on writing them down and getting the voices of each character just right. That is important, especially with this project.”
REGULAR SHOW #1 ships in April with main covers by Nick Edwards (ADVENTURE TIME), Nathan Fox (X-MEN: SECOND COMING), Phil McAndrew (ADVENTURE TIME, BRAVEST WARRIORS), John Allison (ADVENTURE TIME: MARCELINE AND THE SCREAM QUEENS), Noelle Stevenson (ADVENTURE TIME: FIONNA & CAKE) and Chuck BB (CTHULHU TALES, BCBG).

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 1-30-13.

Well the news has come out and boy is the aftermarket a’buzzing! Much thanks to Sebastian Piccione of InvestComics and the awesome video review show FFFIC on the InvestComics YouTube channel, if you followed his instructions you would have been picking up the Sixth Gun comic a long long time ago. NBC has partnered up with the creators; Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt to begin a pilot for them. This is great news if you’re already an owner of the Sixth Gun #1 issue from Oni Press. Why you ask? Do you really have to ask? Well here’s the scoop. On Ebay right now, a seller has 2 number one issues in VF condition no less selling for $90+!! The comics are probably well past that price point since this was as of 2 days ago. Well here’s the question to ask, do I buy? Well here’s the thing with these types of comics. I say “types” because it’s really just a hot item right now because of the announcement from NBC and the fact it may be a successful show (see Walking Dead). Now the other question comes into play, how much is too much? Well a graded copy of Walking Dead #1 sold recently for $10,000. If you’re a regular reader of this column, you’d know that as a collector I personally think that paying that much for a graded Walking Dead number one is absurdity at its finest. Zombie movies, comics, stories are not a new thing. This too shall fade away eventually, leaving that buyer that spent 10 grand on a book that will be worth a third of that in given time. The same may apply to the Sixth Gun. While a spectacular comic and story, the quick bump in the pricing market may be because of the possible outcome of the show and its future. It’s a tricky/dicey bet here to go out and buy high on this comic right now ($50+ range?). The best advice to offer here may seem like a copout, but it’s the most honest. Go with your gut on this. Here are the positives here to help you along; the story itself has never really been done before, making for a fresh take on something “new” as oppose to something “old”. It has potential for a franchise in the sense that the six guns are always to be sought after for their powers, thus making for a constant chase, thus for making for constant story, thus making for constant potential. The negatives are quite simple here. What if the story does not translate to the small screen? The pilot is a flop and you are left holding a $50+ comic in your hands with no aftermarket value. The risk is big here. $50+ is not something you want to just blow away on such uncertainty. I will leave you with one certainty however. There are only 3 CGC graded Sixth Guns #1 issues out there at the moment. If you think you may own a good 9.8 or higher grade, send it off to CGC right away. If you score a 9.8 or higher (hope hope) you will then triple your money in the aftermarket. Or you may want to hold onto it and wait for A: the market to heat up some more (which probably will) Or B: wait for the good reviews (maybe/maybe not) to come in regarding the pilot. Bottom line, go with your gut, it’s usually never wrong.

HOT PICKS

Let’s move along to the new Marvel and DC Universe’s. As said countless times here on the InvestComics Hot Picks; the best thing about the restarts/relaunch of these two companies is the influx of new heroes and villains as well as the returning/revamps of some of them. This week Marvel’s Avengers (2012 5th Series) #4 gives us the origin of Hyperion. Hyperion first appeared in the original Avengers series (1963). The issue was Avengers #69 (1969). The value here is at the $80 mark. Not too bad for a character that hasn’t really been “A rated”. Here’s a nice nugget though; only 100 total copies sit out there graded and only 5 are in the 9.8 spot. If you can muscle away a very nice non graded copy (9.8 – good luck, not an easy task), you’d be able to flip it for some decent change.

Another non- listed A rated character makes his long awaited return (who was really wanting on this guy anyway?). Dark Avengers (2012 Marvel) 2nd Series #186 sets the return of…..ready?? U.S. Agent! Okay so maybe not the biggest star in the sky, but he’s a cool dude! Check out Captain America #323 (1986) for his debut. The CGC market doesn’t really have many of these copies graded at the moment. Only 21 graded with a top heavy 6 issues in the 9.8 category. Not so bad here if you think you can score a 9.8 at $4, send it off and try to flip it by upselling it on Ebay. Not that hard of an issue to find.

X-Men Legacy #5 will introduce two new villains. Yay, more bad guys….gals. Whichever.

DC’s Flash (2011) #16 will introduce a major new villain. Good for Flash because his rouge gallery is not that impressive anyways. Justice League Dark (2011) #16 will debut a new character.

DC feels it necessary to give He-Man his own origin book this week. Masters of the Universe The Origin of He-Man (2013) #1 gives us an awesome cover though doesn’t it? If you feel like you’re in the hunting mode, look for the debut of He-Man in Masters of the Universe from Mattel (1981). Good luck finding that in NM condition.

And finally from DC, we have Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #16 coming out this week with debut penciler Ethan Van Sciver. We don’t have to get into how much Ethan’s pencils are boss. This guy can flat out draw. With Ethan on the new Bat book, it got me thinking of where Ethan’s earliest Batman art occurred. It brought me way back to 2001 Justice Leagues: JL? #1. What’s up with the title? Anyway, if you want Ethan’s first(?) Batman work you can probably find it hiding in a long box someplace for a buck. If you want to make a quick buck, you pair up the latest Ethan Batman with his “first Batman” and sell that on Ebay as a pair. Send me at least 7%. Thanks.

Image Comics will release Invincible (2003) #100. Expect instant sellouts on this book. More so there is a golden nugget here that will pay very high dividends if you are able to score it. With the release of the modern day Peter Parker like character comic, there will be 9 variant covers. There will be one in particular you will need to grab in order to make an almost guarantee profit. The Ryan Ottley wraparound Sketch Cover will be a cool $85 when it comes out. Look for the aftermarket to command more than the $85 you spent on it….quickly. If you feel so inclined, you may want to get it graded to make even more money. This fans is the variant to get!

On the cosmetic front we have Spawn (1992) #227 coming out. Todd McFarlane continues his very smart money grab here and continues to pay homage to various famous comic covers. Todd pays homage to himself this week with the copying of Amazing Spider-Man #300. Todd is still great and a smart business man within the comic book industry. Not so much baseball, but comics. Sorry Todd! We still love ya!

Be sure to check out an interesting title from Dark Horse this week; Emily and the Strangers (2012 Dark Horse) #1.

That’s it for now. Remember to listen to the newest and greatest Podcast ever! Breaking the 4th Wall brought to you by InvestComics. Shaun Cobble & Shaun Sorenson are doing their thing; listen in to maybe start winning some prizes too! And also the weekly video comic book review show; FFFIC! Watch that each week. This past week Ernest Mesa won a signed Mark Bagley autograph! What creator autograph will be next? Stay tuned and find out!

See you next week, invest wisely.

JLA Movie gets a team roster

LATINO REVIEW has reported, and MSN has run with, a list of confirmed characters for WARNER BROTHERS’ upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

According to the article’s sources, the movie team roster will include DC’s “trinity” of SUPERMAN, BATMAN, WONDER WOMAN along with GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH.  They also list potential cameos from Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, as well as slim chance for a Hawkman appearance.

While everyone has at least one favorite character not on the list (I still can’t believe Ted Kord and Vibe aren’t up there) it’s also noteworthy that there is no mention of even a cameo for CYBORG, who was retconned into founding member status in DC’s NEW 52 relaunch of the comics. This also means, that unless they go with John Stewart as GL or do some Marvel movie-worthy creative casting (Sam Jackson as Nick Fury) this is going to be a pretty vanilla team.

The villain, as has been previously reported, is set to be DARKSEID, and, at the time of the LATINO REVEIW article, they were still looking for a director.

NBC orders Pilot based on Bunn & Hurtt’s SIXTH GUN

Every month on FFFIC, I tell you that Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s THE SIXTH GUN is the greatest comic that you’re not reading, and that you should all buy the trades, pick up the issues, and read this.

Well, here comes my “I TOLD YOU SO” moment.

DEADLINE has reported that NBC has ordered a pilot based on the book, to be produced by LOST‘s Carlton Cruse and written by Ryan Condal.

Here’s the DEADLINE Right up:
onise_45“Based on the Oni Press graphic novel, Sixth Gun is the story of six mythical guns in the Old West. When the Sixth Gun, the most powerful and dangerous of the group, resurfaces in the hands of an innocent girl named Becky Montcrief, dark forces reawaken. Vile men thought long dead set their sights on retrieving the gun and killing Becky. Only Drake Sinclair, a self-serving gunfighter, stands in evil’s way. Feature writer Ryan Condal wrote the script and will executive produce with Cuse as well as Eric Gitter and Andy Bourne of Oni Press’s sister company, film/TV producer Closed on Mondays Entertainment. The order adds to an already full plate for Cuse, who also executive produces the A&E series Bates Motel and the FX pilot The Strain, his collaboration with Guillermo del Toro.”

Now go, you have some reading to do.

DeMatteis, Giffen, and Maguire are well-known for their run on DC Comics’ Justice League in the late ’80s, which added a humorous brand of storytelling to the superhero team dynamic and brought a lighthearted tone with fantastic humor – something different in a comic landscape that was filled with “grim and gritty” books.

“We couldn’t be happier to have these three creators reuniting once again at this year’s show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Their appearance together at the show in 2011 was a real treat to fans who attended the show and who attended their panel. Their work in comics in the late-’80s helped to lay the groundwork for many of today’s modern characters.”

Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire join already announced guests: Mark Buckingham (Fables); Frank Cho (Savage Wolverine); Dave Gibbons (The Secret Service); Adam Hughes (Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan); Barry Kitson (Empire); Paul Levitz (World’s Finest); Mike Mignola (Hellboy In Hell); George Perez (World’s Finest); David Petersen (Mouse Guard); Chris Samnee (Daredevil); Louise Simonson (X-Factor); Walt Simonson (The Mighty Thor); Allison Sohn (sketch card artist); and Mark Waid (Indestructible Hulk).

Let’s get started with the week full of first appearances and more…..

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=216]

Marvel is going with the release of two number 1 issues this week, both team books. First we have Young Avengers (2012 2nd Series) #1. The series will put together Wiccan, Hulkling, Marvel Boy, Ms. America amongst others. All the first appearances here are obviously very affordable and easy finds. So with that, Wiccan’s first appearance could be found in within the pages of Young Avengers #7, Hulkling’s is in Young Avengers #1. Ms. America’s first is in Marvel Now’s! Vengeance #1. The best offer out of the above mentioned characters has to go to Marvel Boy. This particular Marvel Boy that appears in the latest Young Avengers book first appeared in his self titles book Marvel Boy #1 (2000). The great catch with this Marvel Knights comic is Grant Morrison writes and J.G. Jones Pencils. A nice creative team to say the least.

The second team to cover this week is Uncanny X-Force (2012 2nd Series) #1. This series packs more punch with their ensemble. For starters there is Storm. Storm first appeared in the legendary Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975). The first appearance of the new X-Men…..and Storm. At a mere $1500 in the aftermarket, it really is an undervalued book at the moment. More so, the CGC market has seen almost 4100 of these comics graded. Not much bang for your buck here unless you can pull off the elusive 9.8 grade. Only 86 have been graded in this area. Now that is some nice cash waiting for you if you can find a high non-graded at the $1500 mark. Get your hands on a copy of the Giant Size X-Men #1 if you can. Not so much for the Storm first appearance, but for the New X-Men. Psylocke is also a part of the Uncanny X-Force team and New Mutants Annual #2 (1986) is the spot to find her first appearance. The attraction to this comic however is the same as Marvel Boy #1, the creators. Written by Chris Claremont, with art by Alan Davis. A relatively easy to find comic and in some cases in the one dollar bins at your local comic shop. Puck of the highly underrated Alpha Flight team will be on the team as well. Here’s the scoop on Puck’s first appearance. Alpha Flight was a tremendously popular comic back in the early 80’s, much to do with the popularity of both the team and John Byrne. It was also a time when print runs were a bit high. An Alpha Flight comic never commanded the aftermarket the way it should have. Alpha Flight #1 (1983) peaked out at the $15 mark at one time. I have personally seen at a few conventions almost an entire long box of number one issues selling at a buck a piece. There are simply too many of these comics floating around. Here is another indicator as to why the market is not so kind to Alpha Flight #1. There are about 462 graded issues right now out there. 263 of them are graded a 9.8! That’s a bit top heavy. If there were lower print runs, this comic would gain the respect it needs in the aftermarket, but for now it remains a great comic to read through, put away and wait another 80 years for it to have any sort of value. When Marvel does get around to making that Alpha Flight movie, you better have all of those Alpha Flight #1 issues ready to blow out. The first appearance in the Uncanny X-Men would be the one to get……but another time for that. The villain known as Spiral will be a part of the Uncanny X-Force team. Spiral first appeared in Longshot #1. A onetime very hot sought after comic. Not so much these days, but you can still find it on Ebay for a smaller price than it was about 12 years ago. So go grab it. This one time hot character will eventually be hot again. You should get on the ground floor here. Granted there are 53 9.8 graded books, but there are only 97 submitted. Meaning if you get a high grade, you can flip it easier because not that many are graded overall. Get your paws on some great copies of the beautiful artistry from Art Adams at $8/$10 and grade them. Sell a few, hold onto a few. Wrapping up the X-Force crew here we have Bishop and Cluster. The same applies for Bishop as did Puck, but worse. Great character, great comic, too many available. Uncanny X-Men #282 (1991) was the beginning of the end for the speculative market back in the 90’s. Way too many to be had or worth anyone’s while in the aftermarket nowadays. 25 cent boxes at the local convention….happy hunting. Should take you about 4 seconds to find it. And finally, Cluster; is actually a character spawned from Fantomex. Fantomex first appears in New X-Men #128 (2002).

InvestComics had a special Hot Picks section that ran in the Hot Picks 10-3-12 article. Within that section included a bunch of steamy X-Men covers from past to present. This week Marvel is at it again with Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #24. Take a look at the past article right HERE if you’d like.

DC’s Batwoman (2011 2nd Series) #16 will be introducing a new hero. That’s always fun and exciting. NOTE: Be sure to pick up any of the first appearances within the New 52 because eventually one of these characters is going to hit big. Birds of Prey (2011 3rd Series) #16 will bring in a new member to the board named Strix; of the Court of Owls. She first appeared in Batgirl #9 (New 52). The Blue Beetle (2011 3rd Series) #16 comic (final issue) will lead right into the new series called THRESHOLD (not sure if the new series will be in all uppercase, or if DC added the dramatic CAPS to It. the suspense is killing me!).

And this week we wrap up with telling y’all to be sure to check out Answer (2012 Dark Horse) #1, looks very interesting.

See you next week. Invest wisely.

ONE OF THESE X-MEN IS A TRAITOR!

ONE OF THESE X-MEN IS A TRAITOR! That’s all the information Marvel sent along with their latest teaser for Brian Michael and Bendis Brian Bachalo’s UNCANNY X-MEN #1. The idea of who is the traitor, and exactly what they are betraying, is an interesting one considering this is the rogue (no, not her) team of fugitive, renegade mutants, lead by former Phoenix wielding and Professor Xavier murdering Scott “Cyclops” Summer.  Plus, magneto rocking the all white look. What’s up with that?

GREAT PACIFIC scores the sell-out hat-trick!

Image has reported that Joe harris and Martin Morazzo’s GREAT PACIFIC has sold out it’s thirs straight issue. If you’ve been following the FFFIC review show right here on InvestComics, than you know that both Seb and Shaun have been loving this book, and it appears they’re not alone!

THREE SELL-OUTS FOR GREAT PACIFIC

Third issue of Image Comics series gets 2nd printing

A continent of trash in the Pacific Ocean continues to capture the minds of comic book readers as the third issue of the Image Comics series GREAT PACIFIC has sold out and will be reprinted. The second printing of GREAT PACIFIC #3 (DEC128031) will be in stores on February 13. The tale of a privileged young man who seeks to make a difference by forging a new nation on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, written by Joe Harris and drawn by Martín Morazzo, GREAT PACIFIC has sold out of all three of its issues thus far. It also has had coveted Phantom Variant covers for all three of its issues and garnered praise from critics:

“This very unique and interesting premise is paired with spectacular pencils by artist Martin Morazzo who is meticulous when it comes to his attention to detail. This is a fantastic issue, but I do not recommend starting your GREAT PACIFIC adventure here, if you are interested. Definitely pick up issues one and two before you dive into this one, it will be worth it.”

-Comic Vine

“I’m glad a series like this exists and it’s definitely something that can only exist in the world of comics. The story and art is a perfect match for each other and if you’re looking for something very different to read this week then this is it.”

    -Comic Bastards

“I still can’t enough of Martín Morazzo’s illustrations, long and massive landscapes of plastic and garbage as far as the eye can see. You can almost hear the snap, crackle and pop under the protagonist’s feet, as he steps on thousands of plastic water bottles joined together like a floor of modern art.”

    – Comics the Gathering

GREAT PACIFIC wraps up its first story arc with issue #4 on February 6. The start of a new story arc for the now-ongoing series, GREAT PACIFIC #5, will be in stores on March 6.

TBS – King of the Nerds – Review!

“This is Nerd Heaven.”  – King of the Nerds episode one

With these immortal words, let the games begin! TBS sent InvestComics an advance screening of the newest reality television series “King of the Nerds” and boy was it intergalactic! (That’s my version of saying it was fun).  This series is an 8 week competition to see who will win $100,000 and MORE importantly be crowned the “King of the Nerds!” King of the Nerds TBS

At the very onset of the show, the viewers quickly learn what they are getting into. We meet, in no particular order;  a Neuroscientist, Mathematician, Geophysicist, Nasa Engineer, Master Hacker, Fantasy writer, Video Game Blogger, Comics and Gaming Nerd, Pro Gamer, Role Playing Game Designer and a Comic Book Nerd. Quite the eclectic group one might say, while true, they are very likeable….except for the Master Hacker “Virgil” which reminds us of that person you think you know, but know at any moment they may snap and hurt someone (not saying he would, but boy is he scary in a strange way). There are a set of 11 players in the battle royal here, but they are quickly put on sides as the first breakdown of emotion’s come before the 11 minute mark! Not too bad for a bunch of misfits. The “regular reality” shows usually have a person breaking down before the 8 minute mark, so kudos nerds. The choosing of sides is done in a colorful manner in which you most likely never have seen on a reality show. While cute at first, it gets old quick, but unique/silly nonetheless. With that though, we do get our first big surprise of the series. Pleasantly unexpected!

For all the fanboys watching a quick note; there are at least 3 nerd girls that are very appealing on the eyes in a nerd sort of way. Quite sure this wasn’t done intentionally right? Yea it probably was, but who cares?? Hot girl nerd power!

King of the Nerds Cast

As the show progresses into the strategy portion, alliances are formed as the nerds converge into little groups in the most awkward strategy reality bit you will probably witness. Our pal Virgil is still a strange duck. The whole process/segment is like a train wreck, turn away you must, but look you will. All and all, it’s a fun segment that turns out to be more of a learning tool for the viewer on who really is who and what power they do possess to bring to the table.

The teams are chosen as we approach the first “Nerd Off.” Boy is that a spectacular title isn’t it? Let’s say that again shall we? Ready….Nerd Off. Okay so we get to the picking of 2 players to be chosen by team members to battle in the Nerd Off. The loser of the Nerd Off (yes I will keep saying this, deal with it) will get eliminated from the game.

The Nerd Off challenge itself is a superb one. This viewer didn’t expect to see it played this way and it was welcomed in my nerd world. It’s both sexy and violent!

The players have much to offer personality wise as viewers will probably pick and choose sides very quickly. I for one have my two favorites and I am torn as to who I want to be crowned. Is it the nerd girl that claims to be an 11 on the scale of 1-10, or is it the coolness/smoothness of Celeste? I’m guessing as the show progresses, either one will be eliminated or one will just get on my nerves and fall out of favor. We shall wait and see.

TBSOverall the show definitely has broad appeal to it. It will have comic book, gamers, Batman fanatics, engineers and real smart people watching. Fans of reality television should jump on board too because of the unexpected turns this show will probably offer. The “unexpected” is always an appealing trait to have on a reality series.

Executive Producers and hosts of the show Curtis Armstrong and Robert Carradine of the Revenge of the Nerds films have hit a home run here. They both display a sincere fondness and genuine happiness of the show they are involved in. Being involved within the geek culture to some capacity makes it a bit easier for me to understand the happening’s of what is taking place from commercial break to snack break. For anyone that is not familiar with this culture, don’t fret, you will quickly come to the understanding that being a nerd is actually cool and fun.

Don’t miss this show on TBS Thursday January 17at 10pm/9c.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 1-16-13.

It’s only a couple of weeks into the New Year and the comic book aftermarket is rocking n’ rolling! Star Wars #1 (IDW), Amazing Spider-Man #700 variant and Superior Spider-Man have made some noise. Let’s see if InvestComics can find you collectors more comics to look out for with the new releases…..

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=213]

With Spider-Man firing on all cylinders right now, Marvel Comics is striking while iron is hot. Not anything to do with Tony Stark here, but with Peter Par…err….Doc Ock. This week Doc Ock takes to the pages of Avenging Spider-Man (2011) #16 as the new Spidey. The comic will guest star Wolverine and the X-Men. Although the guest spots are nice, this isn’t really the draw of this particular comic. Neither is the first Superior Spidey appearance in this book. The draw will be the new creative team of Christopher Yost and Paco Medina. Avenging Spider-Man (or is it Avenging Superior Spider-Man now?) has been a solid book for the most part, let’s see if the new team can sustain this or take it to another level. Well, another level will have to be done here because of the temporary layoff of Peter. It all depends on how well the storytelling will play out and if fans will buy it. As for the aftermarket of Superior Spider-Man, if you hold anything of value that you think you can flip for some quick cash, do so now. If you’re holding onto a comic that does not have Peter Parker as Spidey, It’s a commodity losing its value as the clock ticks on waiting for the return of Peter. Then once Parker does come back, you have great storytelling within your hands with no monetary value to it, which is okay if you don’t care about that stuff.

Superior Spidey will making another stop this week; Daredevil (2011 3rd Series) #22. So this will be the first team of the new Spider-Man and Daredevil, which is a complete a non factor. The issue boasts the return of Stilt-Man though! (Another non factor) But if one is so inclined to seek out a very cheap first appearance, Stilt-Man would be the way to go. Look for the very early Daredevil #8 issue from 1965 to find the ridiculous villain known as Stilt-Man! A VF/NM copy can be in your hands in the $150/$200 range. Here’s a nice selling point though. If somehow you can nab a real good copy, talking a NM copy here at or around the $200 mark, send it off to get a handsome grade of a 9.8, you have probably just made some money back. There are only six 9.8 graded copies out of 422 total graded. Not a bad idea to try and find that elusive 9.8 or higher here.

…Another year another number one Wolverine issue…..ho-hum. Savage Wolverine (2012) #1 features Wolverine in the Savage land. So what is the new Marvel NOW! to do with our most overused/floundering badass in the Marvel Universe you ask? Well you just throw some hot babes in the book that should do the trick! No really, that’s what they’re doing. No joking. The solicit says that’s the direction of the new Wolverine book; “Wolverine is all brawls, babes…” We all knew he was a stud, so what’s the surprise here right? The surprise may be in the first babe appearing in this comic. Shanna the She-Devil? That’s a character you don’t hear that much from these days. Shanna first appeared in her self- titled book Shanna the She Devil #1 (1972). The same applies here as it did with the previous mentioned back issue book within this article, but more so for this comic. There are only nine graded 9.8 out of 137 grades. A Near Mint $30 comic (a 9.8) could probably snag you some more dough in the graded Ebay market. Don’t think so, go try it and send InvestComics its 10%. Thank me later. Oh and a cover by the legendary Jim Steranko?? Ah yes, nice indeed.

It’s been over a year now that the new DC 52 has been upon us. A few surprises, a few not so surprises, a few “what?!” moments, a few “who cares?” moments and then the enviable retelling of origins that most fanboys are not excepting. Too bad DC says to you! It’s not about YOU, it’s about two things folks; a new story to tell (entire universe was stale) and MONEY! So with that rant we come to Team 7 (2012 DC) #4 which includes the “secret” origin of DC’s badass Deathstroke (has anyone seen him on Arrow? Translates nicely to television, now if only the movies would get going…..). So if you’re in the market looking for one of the most underrated villains in quite some time, look no further than Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke. He won’t be flying under the radar for much longer if he keeps popping up on Arrow and continues to be an awesome force on that show. InvestComics has been saying it for years, actually the first InvestComics magazine ever (7 years ago) featured The New Teen Titans #2 (first appearance of Deathstroke) as a major pickup and has gained ground ever since. Things are not much different today folks. WHEN (not IF) this character breaks out onto the big screen, it will be in a major way. He will be everything Marvel wants out of the Punisher that it’s not getting. So is there any draw backs to owning this $50 NM issue? Well for one, there are over 700 graded issues out there. 141 which are 9.8 graded. In most cases this would be very top heavy in regards to the aftermarket, so what does this mean for THIS particular comic though? If you can score a 9.8 after spending $50 on this comic, you have done yourself some justice. You will easily double your monies on Ebay with this grade. In most cases though, this would not work because of the overflow at the top here, but this character already commands the attention it’s getting and will continue to do so as time goes on. Now once this dude hits the movie screen, look out because your profits will go significantly higher. The bottom line here? Buy a beautiful $50 aftermarket 9.8 grade and get rewarded nicely.

Although DC is touting the debut of a NEW writer to the DC house, Robert Venditti is anything but “new”. He’s been around a little while and is just now getting around to the halls of DC Comics. One of Robert’s first work appeared in The Surrogates #1 from 2005 (Top Shelf Productions). Look for that comic in some 50 cent long box at your local comic shop.

Two number one issues from DC hit the shelves this week. Insurgent (2012 DC) #1 and Threshold (2012 DC) #1. Insurgent will be an all new series starting from the ground up, while Threshold lives off of the Green Lantern universe.

Other number one issues to check out this week are High Ways (2012 IDW) #1 from legend John Byrne, Black Beetle (2012 Dark Horse) #1 and Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth (2012 Image) #1 (which wins best title of the week).

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up for the InvestComics Newsletter! See you next week.

Invest wisely.

Why are they sworn to celibacy?

“I am Lazarus, come from the dead, Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all.” — T.S. Elliot
THE BLOOD GOSPEL (Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, on sale 1/8/2013, ISBN:
9780061991042, $27.99) is the most innovative treatment of vampires since Anne Rice’s seminal novel,
Interview with the Vampire. In his first-ever collaboration, New York Times bestselling author James
Rollins combines his skill for cutting-edge science and historical mystery with award-winning novelist
Rebecca Cantrell’s talent for haunting suspense and sensual atmosphere in a gothic tale about an ancient
order and the hunt for a miraculous book known only as . . . THE BLOOD GOSPEL.

THE BLOOD GOSPEL is a bold gothic story about an ancient cryptic order and the hunt for a miraculous
and forbidden book— a book rumored to have been written by Christ’s own hand, in His own blood, a
tome that is said to hold the secrets to Christ’s divinity and miracles.
Rollins explains, “Vampires have been around for ages, and the mythology is often tweaked to
match the times. After viewing Rembrandt’s painting of “The Raising of Lazarus” in a museum in
Los Angeles, it struck me strange how scared everyone looked, and this started me down a road of
reflection about early Catholicism, vampirism, and a story began to unfold, a story that examines
the line between faith and science. I knew this could be a huge, ground-breaking new mythology, a
story so epic in scope that I knew I didn’t want to tackle this alone.”
Cantrell adds, “The church has a long and well-known history of revering blood, from the
mythology of Christ’s blood being created during mass, through using the blood-drenched marble
of the Coliseum to face the columns surrounding St. Peter’s Square to building the holiest church
in Rome on ground soaked with the blood of Christian martyrs. But what if that blood draws its
power and strength from a group equally mingled with blood—vampires, hidden within the
power structure of the Church, shaping its destiny from its founding?”
An earthquake in Masada, Israel, kills hundreds and reveals a tomb buried in the heart of the mountain. A
trio of investigators-Sergeant Jordan Stone, a military forensic expert; Father Rhun Korza, a Vatican

discovery, a subterranean temple holding the crucified body of a mummified girl.
But a brutal attack at the site sets the three on the run, thrusting them into a race to recover what was
once preserved in the tomb’s sarcophagus: THE BLOOD GOSPEL. The enemy who hounds them is like no
other, a force of ancient evil directed by a leader of impossible ambitions and incalculable cunning.
From crumbling tombs to splendorous churches, Erin and her two companions must confront a past that
traces back thousands of years, to a time when ungodly beasts hunted the dark spaces of the world, to a
moment in history when Christ made a miraculous offer, a pact of salvation for those who were damned
for eternity. Hidden within the Vatican is a secret sect, one whispered as rumor but whose very existence
was painted for all to see by Rembrandt himself, a shadowy order known simply as the Sanguines.
In the end, be warned: some books should never be found, never opened-until now.

The Blood Gospel Q&A:
James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell discuss collaborating for the first time,
the reality of vampires and the science behind strigoi
How did you two meet?
Rebecca: I used to live in Hawaii, and Jim was my instructor at the Maui Writer’s Retreat where I was
workshopping a thriller. My first novel, A Trace of Smoke, had been accepted for publication a few weeks before
and he kindly agreed to give me my first blurb. It was so good, I printed and hung it above my writing desk until it
got covered in gecko poop. Then I took it down. Sorry about the poop, Jim.
The Blood Gospel is a bit of a deviation from the books that both of you are traditionally known for. What
inspired the idea for this book?
James: This book came about from viewing Rembrandt’s painting of the Raising of Lazarus. It struck me strange
how scared everyone looked, and this started me down a road of reflection about early Catholicism, vampirism,
and a story began to unfold. I knew this could be a huge, ground-breaking new mythology, a story so epic in scope
that I knew I didn’t want to tackle this alone.
Rebecca: Jim called to ask me if I was interested in collaborating on a project. The premise and the world were so
intriguing and controversial, I said yes immediately.
Both of you are well known authors in your own right, how did you learn to collaborate?
Rebecca: We went back and forth a lot while trying to decide what would be fun and interesting for both of us.
Since we’re two people, more ideas come out and the books end up going in a direction I don’t think either of us
would have found on our own. Luckily, he’s very open and easy to work with and has never once said “that’s the
stupidest idea ever,” because I think you need to feel safe to throw out any idea at the beginning and see what
sticks.
James: It’s one of the best things about collaboration: we each bring a unique skill set to the table. Scenes where I
know I perhaps am more deft (i.e. action), I handle. Likewise, Becky’s skill at characterization and atmospheric
historical descriptions, I let her run with it. That said, then we each take each other’s work and tweak it in new and
surprising ways that neither of us could have done alone.
Could vampires have been or be real?
Rebecca: Our series plays with the idea that vampires are and always have been a myth, but the myth is based on
some truth—that strigoi have always existed within and without the Church and their bloody crimes have formed
the basis of the vampire myth.
James: It was interesting how many of the Church’s trappings (hooded robes, crosses, celibate priests, and the rite
of turning wine into Christ’s blood) could be directly folded into the vampire mythology. It makes you wonder if
the Church isn’t keeping something secret about a mythology that has existed for millennia.
Can fans expect to find elements of science in this series?
Jim: With a scientific background in biology, I wanted to instill into the mythology how vampirism might be
possible, how such creatures could live among us, how they could survive without beating hearts, why silver would
be toxic to them. The goal of this book was to explore the line between faith and science, so that meant exploring a
scientific and historical rationalization for the existence of vampires.

One of the best idea’s not to come out of Marvel, but is cool anyways is Avengers Arena. As many of you know by now it’s the Hunger Games within the Marvel Universe. That said, this week in Avengers Arena (2012) #3 we get a new matchup’s including X-23 (vs. Cammi – Cammi covered in Hot Picks Avengers Arena #2) and Sentinel (vs. ?, they’re not saying. It’s a secret). So as previously said here on InvestComics Hot Picks, the fun of knowing that a character’s ultimate fate will be met out of a “game” is quite awesome. No pussyfooting around (yes the word pussyfooting was used, so what?). Secondly, these characters are fourth, third, maybe second rate players at best, so you know for the most part they will stay dead for quite some time if not permanently. This isn’t Peter Parker, Clark Kent or Steve Rogers. Everyone knew they’d be back. These Heroes/Villains…..who cares?! Right? So with that; death…. there had to be a birth someplace. X-23 stands a good chance of surviving the Arena, but things can happen! Find X-23’s first appearance in NYX #3 (2004) written by none other than Joe Quesada. Because X-23 is Wolverine’s daughter the comic in the aftermarket commands about $80. Really?? This comic is a bit overpriced, unless there is talk of her appearing in an X- Men film or breaking out anytime soon, stay away at this price. The second character who probably stands more of a chance of meeting his demise is Sentinel. Check out the first appearance in the much hyped at the time, but fell flat Sentinel #1 (2003) from Marvel’s Tsunami line. You can search the 25 cent long boxes at your comic shop for this one.

Value lesson coming up, I will start charging for this so appreciate this folks!

Much of the talk in the last couple of weeks has been about the death of Peter Parker, which in itself is completely silly. Haven’t we been taught anything with Rogers and Kent? Anyone that would pay a premium for Amazing Spider-Man #700, be it a regular cover or Variant is simply not a true comic book collector and has no idea how any of this works. Anyone who SOLD this comic at a premium, first off, you’re welcome (where’s my cut?), second; you are all learning a valuable lesson on the market. Myself, working on Wall Street for 14 years taught me that much is never what it seems and that many times you must strike while the iron is hot. Sometimes you lose though. It’s the nature of the beast, but if you are precise in your comic collecting abilities, you will be able to ONCE in a while buy that $3.99 comic and make an extremely easy profit on Ebay. Such is the case for this week’s Superior Spider-Man (2012) #1. Doc Ock inside of Peter’s body? Peter is not Spidey?? Hmm….unless you haven’t been paying attention at history or what you just read 30 seconds ago, Peter will be back. So what does this mean for Superior Spider-Man #1? Well it means that if you are looking to buy this comic and sit on it for a “value” reason, you’re wasting your time and that’s exactly what that comic will be good for is sitting on the porcelain throne. Here’s a quick tip (I want my cut), remember those people who bought those death of Parker issues for crazy money? Yea those people. Target them again, but with any variant you can possibly find on Superior Spider-Man #1. Those amateurs still believe that Peter will never be coming back and that this is truly the beginning of a “new era.” The 90’s speculation market never went away folks; it just shifted in a different way. If you don’t believe that, well then you’re missing out on easy money.

Marvel quickies: Scarlet Spider (2012 2nd Series) #13 gives us the return of Carlos Lobo! Carlos who?? Yea, remember that 25 cent bin you were looking through earlier? While you’re there, look for Spectacular Spider-Man #143 (1988). This comic will net you the mutant werewolf Carlos Lobo. Avengers #3 introduces the New Adam and on the ridiculous front we get to check out Punisher War Zone (2012) #3. Ready for this? Punisher vs. Thor. Okay bring it, should be a one panel fight, but okay.

DC Comics is set to bring back Steppenwolf in Earth 2 (2012 DC) #8. Who cares right? The real caring dates back to 1972’s New Gods #7. It’s a triple threat issue collectors! First it has the first appearance of Steppenwolf, second it has the origin of Orion and thirdly it’s all done by the King himself; Jack Kirby. Get all of that for a $60 price tag.

Ah…nothing better than seeing a villain take it to Superman once in a while. Take a look at the cover of Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #16 and witness the new Superdoom villain (lame name no?) with his hand around Supes neck. Cool! Now stop the nonsense Clark, kick his ass.

Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #16 solicit states a new villain will be interrupting things. Do they mean the Joker? Hope not, saying a new villain means a NEW villain. This new 52 stuff really is silly sometimes. Okay maybe more than sometimes.

And on the independent front we have a relaunch or a “back to basics” sort of deal with Star Wars (2012 Dark Horse) #1 from IDW. With the announcement from Disney about 3 more Star Wars films coming our way, now is a better time than never to pick up the very first Star Wars comics from Marvel. Star Wars #1 (1977) goes for a cool $3,000. This of course is for the 35 cent variant, not the regular 30 cent cover that goes for $80. See cheapo, spend the extra nickel and get something back. Anyway as mentioned, with the new films on the horizon the Star Wars comics are about to get a major jolt. If you can pick up a Star Wars #1 issue for what the asking price is on Ebay, buy it. In 10 years you’ll be very happy that you did. Other interesting looks this week include; Jinnrise (2012 IDW) #1, Plume (2012 Devils Due) #1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Secret History of the Foot Clan #1 and Mars Attacks Kiss (2012 IDW) #1.

Have a great week everyone. Invest wisely.

News from the DC Comics Blog points out what variant cover you should probably try to get your hands on……Ebay is calling folks!

Author: Alex Nagorski

Back in November, we let you know that JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 would boast a whopping 52 variant covers, featuring the individual flags of all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Currently, all the variant covers are available for ordering – but time is running out! Monday’s the last day comic retailers can up their orders – and your last chance to make sure you get a copy of your state’s cover.

We’ve got a rundown of how the states stack up currently, and so far, it’s looking like fans in Texas are in the lead. But it’s not too late! And, hey, Texas, keep up the good work (shh, don’t tell the rest of the country we said that)!

In addition to the state variants and the standard cover, you can also order the complete, 53-comic set as a combo pack. Now that’s patriotism, eh?

“What better way to show your state pride than by reserving a copy now of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 that features your very own state’s flag?” said Bob Wayne, DC Entertainment Senior Vice President of Sales. “Not only that, but you get the first issue of what’s sure to be an epic, ongoing series by Geoff Johns and David Finch – sounds like a win-win to me. PETER DAVID Update, and how YOU can help

At the end of December, legendary comic writer Peter David suffered a stroke. He survived, but has lost much of the use of the left side of his body. As is often the case with these things, recovery is slow and expensive.  Peter’s wife has been posting updates on PeterDavid.net and her own blog.  Here’s how she says we can help.

Even though we have health insurance we have co-pays and the like. And since this stroke fell at the end of the year, we have all the new co-pays to deal with (I can honestly see those of you who have had to deal with this nodding your heads). And there are things that the insurance company just won’t cover (more head nodding). So we are at the beginning of what is going to be a very expensive year even though we are only 4 days in.

The most direct way is to buy his books from Crazy 8 Press or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites. These are books that he gets the money from directly and the most per book.

She also suggests, if you already have these or do not wish to buy them yourselves, that you share the link and the story.  For her full update, click HERE.
