The creator of TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN and countless cartoons published by THE NEW YORKER and THE ONION has put together a new collection called I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE FUNNIER.  Interestingly enough, my reaction to the book upon reading it was, “I DIDN’T THINK IT”D BE THIS FUNNY!”
That’ll teach me to think. Clearly I do it wrong. Thank you, Mr. Wheeler, for putting me straight.

Deservedly nominated for an Eisner Award, Wheeler’s cartoons range from subtle to blatant, from deep to shallow, from topical to bizarre, from the almost cute to the so very wrong.  I love it. The true measure of success for a book of this type is how many times you yell to your spouse, “Honey, you gotta see this one!” while reading it. Well, after about page 6 I gave up and just started following her around, laughing wordlessly, and pointing.  Which worked out well, as I needed her to translate some French for me in a few of them.

One of my favorites features a couple in bed, and the guy is saying, “At least we know the condom worked,” while looking down at a small army of tiny grim reapers who have come to claim the souls of all the sperm.

Yeah, I want that one on a shirt.

An easy 5 out of 5 stars.
