Best Selling Non-Super Hero comics of April 2013

Best Selling Non-Super Hero comics of April 2013

Here we will analyze the 50 best selling comic books that venture into drama, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, movie/tv franchises and kids titles.    46 comics this month had orders of over 10,000 copies each !

The strength of Walking Dead has helped give rise to a growing number of non-superhero comic book titles.   Image leads the way with 3 of the top 4 titles.   This chart is impressive showing that 50 of the Top 200 best selling comics are non-superhero that is an impressive 25% of all comic sales.   However note that only 4 titles make the Diamond Top 50 showing that hero books still have a grip on the biggest overall sales and consistently best selling titles.

What is unique to this list in particular though is the growing fan base has helped increase the values of most of these books early issues.    We all know about Walking Dead #1 being worth $1000.00 and leading the pack for most valuable 21st century comic book.   However early issues of Saga, Star Wars, East Of West, My Little Pony, Adventure Time, Sex, Morning Glories, Manhattan Projects, Revival, Thief Of Thieves, Doctor Who, Five Ghosts, Bedlam etc. have ALL gone up in value and all moved into numerous reprintings.

Image in the past year has been the hot bed for back issue price increases with most of the titles on this list.   In this particular month we even see 2nd printing of East Of West #1 make this Top 50 chart at #48 which is considerably high for a non “big 2” reprint book.

The highest ranking books on the list which have NOT seen price increases yet include Jirni and Constantine.   In the case of Jirni #1 it was low priced at $ 1.00 which helped create the huge print run of 35,000 so that book is not likely to ever go up in value.  Constantine has potential but is not a new character (Swamp Thing #37 in 1985).   This could help create interest in older appearances but is no guarantee of the demand in the new book.  However there are 2 things in this book’s favor.  First of all the #1 1st print has sold out and the #2 issue had a print run almost as high as #1 meaning that the quality is there and retailers did not drastically reduce their orders like they usually do from a #1 to a #2 issue.

Star Wars, My Little Pony, Buffy, Adventure Time, Star Trek, Doctor Who, GI  Joe are all strong franchises with orders of 13,000 each or higher.   The cartoon titles My Little Pony and Adventure Time have both sold out original print runs and have been some of the most impressive selling titles ever to a potentially younger audience.   Regular Show #1 comes out in a month and will likely rank just as high with potential of a sell out of #1.

The Big Two = DC has a number of titles always appearing due to their non superhero “Vertigo” line.   Marvel really seems to be missing the boat in the non-hero genre with only 2 titles in the entire Top 50.

IDW is the kingpin of franchise titles so they have a strong showing on this list.

Small indie publishers with strong showings on the chart include Aspen, Boom, Avatar, Oni all with 1 title each.  These are books to watch in the future and will be some of the most likely books to increase in value as these books have reached a lot of hype.

Of course this list is up for debate as some titles cross-over with hero characters so you can argue that some books on this list might not truly belong here but it gives us a great overview in comparing what is popular and how the publishers are selling on their top non-hero books.

May brings the next round of $1 IMAGE FIRSTS EDITIONS

WITH SPRING, A NEW CROP OF IMAGE FIRSTS

$1 editions of six Image Comics first issues

Image Comics has announced the release of six new “Image Firsts” editions, printings of popular series’ first issues that only cost $1.00, to land in stores on May 1 just in time to coincide with Free Comic Book Day. The six new titles are BEDLAM #1 by Nick Spencer and Riley Rossmo, GREAT PACIFIC by Joe Harris and Martín Morazzo, MIND THE GAP #1 by Jim McCann and Rodin Esquejo, MORNING GLORIES by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma, PETER PANZERFAUST #1 by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins, and SUPER DINOSAUR #1 by Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard.

BEDLAM, first published in October 2012, is a horror thriller about a former mass-murderer who is rehabilitated and puts his mind, formerly committed to atrocious acts of violence, to protecting the city he once terrorized. The collection of its first six issues will be released on May 1. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138575

In GREAT PACIFIC, which first hit shelves in November 2012, a wealthy young Texan takes on an unlikely frontier — a floating island of garbage in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Claiming it for himself as New Texas, Chas Worthington finds out that taking land is a very different thing from keeping it. GREAT PACIFIC #6 was in stores on April 3, and its first trade paperback, “TRASHED!”, collecting its first five issues, will be in stores on May 1. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138576

MIND THE GAP is a supernatural mystery that debuted in May 2012, following the ensuing events after Elle Peterssen, a beautiful and rich young woman, is attacked in the subway and left for dead. While her body lies comatose, Elle’s mind can observe what goes on around her. She alone holds the key to her attack, but she can’t even remember who she was. MIND THE GAP #10 will be in stores on May 1, and its second volume, collecting issues #6-10, “WISH YOU WERE HERE,” will be in stores on May 29. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138577

MORNING GLORIES, set in the elite boarding school Morning Glories Academy, has been a cult favorite since 2010. A complex and ever-unfolding mystery, MORNING GLORIES pits over-achieving teenagers against a baffling and dangerous curriculum — and against each other. Its fourth volume, TRUANTS, collecting issues #20-24, will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138578

PETER PANZERFAUST, a re-imagining of the classic Peter Pan tale set in World War II France, has been steadily gaining popularity since its first issue landed in stores in February 2012. Its tenth issue was released in March and PETER PANZERFAUST VOLUME TWO: HOOKED!, collecting issues #6-10 will be in stores on May 15. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138579

SUPER DINOSAUR is an all-ages adventure story written by the creator of THE WALKING DEAD. Young Derek Dynamo and his best friend, who happens to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex with super-cool robotic enhancements, take on Earth’s — and Inner-Earth’s — baddest baddies. Its third trade paperback, collecting issues #12-17, was in stores in February and issue #20 will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138580

The new Image Firsts issues will be in stores on May 1, joining thirty-one other Image Firsts editions, including some of Image’s most popular titles like THE WALKING DEAD, SAGA, FATALE, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, and INVINCIBLE. All are available for order now!

Spencer & Rossmo bring A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

New series by Spencer and Rossmo from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – August 23, 2012 — BEDLAM, the new Image Comics series by Nick Spencer (MORNING GLORIES, THIEF OF THIEVES) and Riley Rossmo (GREEN WAKE, DEBRIS), is set in a city that has been terrorized by a maniacal killer and crime boss called Madder Red.

The killer has been rehabilitated and has reclaimed his given name, Filmore Press, but the city of Bedlam is still soaked with the blood and madness he left in his wake.

“It’s a scary world these characters live in. A desperate one. It’s brutal what we put them through,” says writer Spencer. “The shocks aren’t confined to the last page, they’re peppered throughout. There are a lot of ‘shift in your seat uncomfortably’ moments. You don’t get Riley Rossmo to draw your book and not heap on the horror and violence.”

Rossmo’s art is in a moody wash of muted tones, with shocks of stark red.

“Bedlam’s art is pulling a bit stylistically from my last three books,” said Rossmo. “I’m trying for a cleaner line, lots of spotted blacks, and strong well-designedcolor palettes. The Film ‘M’ and David Mazzucchelli are big visual influences. I’m super-happy with the pages I’ve finished so far.”

BEDLAM’s first issue is to be released on Halloween, and the creative team anticipate that it will be the first of many.

“There’s a long-form, big commitment story here, that we will hopefully tell for years to come,” said Spencer. “It’s like Morning Glories in that sense. The book’s not going to be around a little while then vanish. The goal here is to build a mythology around a modern American metropolis, with Madder Red as our guide. It’s exhilarating, starting down the path of something likethis.”

At 48 pages, BEDLAM #1 (AUG120461) is a double-sized introduction to a cityscape of murder, mayhem and mystery with a cover by Frazer Irving (Xombi) . It is available for pre-order now.
