Thor #158

Thor #158 – Click To Buy Now

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details)

IC 100 Club Pick: Thor #158 (1968) 8.0. This beauty is a graded 8.0 and it’s $90. The significance of the book is twofold. First, it’s an early retelling of Thor’s origin and second it’s written and drawn by Jack Kirby. An early piece of Thor’s history up for grabs here.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

IDW Publishing hits fans with a ‘What If’ story. Check out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Deviations One Shot to see what it would be like if the Turtles joined forces with Shredder. A fun read awaits us!

DC is trying to dethrone Marvel Comics with the worse title for a comic book. Marvel has ‘Totally Awesome Hulk’ and now DC will have Suiciders King Of HELL.A. #1 coming this Wednesday.  The variant is sold out and it will probably be a great story from Lee Bermejo. That title though……..

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Aquaman #50 will introduce Aquawoman. Well sort of. Unless someone is counting the Multiversity Aquawoman first appearing in Countdown Presents The Search For Ray Palmer #1 (2008) or the African-American Aquawoman in Earth 2 #18 (2014) as the first appearance. Otherwise, Aquaman #50 coming this Wednesday will be the first Aquawoman that kind of counts more so than the other two. Looks like DC will be taking a page right out of the Marvel way and start with the whole gender changing character thing. Yes it’s been done time and time again over the course of decades and decades, but Marvel has found a knack for making the female hero and gender change (Thor/Wolverine/Gwenpool) character interesting. DC will jump into it now probably too. remember DC, style counts, but writing is more important.

Power Lines #1 from Image Comics seems very interesting. Written and drawn by Jimmie Robinson. A definite comic to check out this week.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Valiant Entertainment has an obvious hit on their hands with the Faith title. The first two issues sold out and the Faith character is striking a cord with fans. Faith #3 hits Wednesday. See what all the fuss is about if you’re not on board yet.
Two other indie comics to check out this week; Hildafolk #1 (Nobrow Press) is sold out. Ninjas vs Aliens #1 (Antarctic Press).

Mockingbird #1 will be an interesting book from different vantage points. First, the character itself. Although Marvel is literally screaming in the solicit that we “DEMANDED IT!” we’re quite sure in actuality, in real life, we probably were not demanding it, but hey Mockingbird is a character within the comic book realm rarely looked at as a major character, If ever really. Not taking away from the potential of bad as* she can probably deliver in her own series, it’s just all so…..new. And it would be nice to get a deeper scope of a character that is making her way on the television series right now. As for the creative team. Best selling author (that’s books with no pictures in them) Chelsea Cain will scribe her third comic book ever. The first was a Mockingbird story, naturally and her second was a Hellboy story. Very new blood here and that’s a great thing. Maybe add a different flavor to this particular series and character we haven’t read yet. Moving onto the artist; Kate Niemczyk. Kate is so new that she has no penciling credits we can find. Nothing in the data basis. So we’re looking at a possible first published work here. All and all, a new rookie creative team may bring a bolt of life into this character not seen before. Keep an ear to the ground on this series. If word gets out that this series is bringing it, Mockingbird #1 will be a keeper. One more thing. A semi-newcomer does a fantastic action variant cover; Afu Chan. Check it out.
Mockingbird first appeared in Marvel Team-Up #95 (1980) with a Frank Miller/Bob McLeod cover.
Mr. Cosmic Jim Starlin returns to Marvel with a new Cosmic story, Infinity Entity #1. The story centers around Adam Warlock. As any fan of InvestComics already knows, we have been a buyer for many years on anything Adam Warlock. Adam’s first appearance as “HIM” was in Fantastic Four #67 (1967). His first appearance as Warlock was in Marvel Premiere #1 (1972). Both of these comics and anything in-between are solid comics to own. This all said, having Jim back into the mix again is a good thing. He never disappoints and always delivers great storytelling. Alan Davis will provide the art and the Marco Rudy variant is sweet. Yes, all around a definite pick up this week.

Not only will Disney Kingdoms The Haunted Mansion #1 be a fantastic story, but Skottie Young is doing his thing with the variant cover. It’ll be sold out in no time.

And It looks like DC will be going with polybag Batman v Superman variant covers this week. We love the ‘ripped’ out eyes with the title of the comic. Detective Comics #50 will don the ripped eye cover as well. Great stuff here.

Batman Chronicles Gallery #1 (1997) – Harley made an appearance in the regular DC Universe with a pinup in this comic before the next book listed here.

Batman Harley Quinn (1999) – Here is the first official Harley Quinn entry (appearance) into the DC Universe. Also an origin issue. A modern day classic cover; Alex Ross.

Batman No Mans Land Gallery #1 (1999) – Harley’s second appearance is very much like her first. In a gallery book. So this means that this comic is not really recognized as her second appearance in the DC Universe, very much like her first appearance.

Batman #570 (1999) – Harley’s second appearance. Many collectors are hoarding these away for a future gauntlet throw down to maximize their potential earnings. Not an easy book to get.

Detective Comics #737 (1999) – The third appearance of Harley Quinn.

Action Comics #765 (2000) – Harley steps out of a Batman comic universe for the first time. This comic is also the first time she appears in the same book as Superman. A definite collectors item here and it’s an affordable book too!

Harley Quinn #1 (2000) – 7 years after her debut into the comic book world, Harley finally gets her own title.

Wonder Woman #164 (2001) – Harley in the same comic as Wonder Woman for the first time. A ridiculously gorgeous Adam Hughes cover as well.

Batman 613

Batman #613 – Click to Buy/Bid

Harley Quinn #4 (2001) – First appearance of the Quinntets.

Harley Quinn: Our Worlds at War #1 (2001) – This comic not only possess a great story, but it also marks the first time Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti get their creative Quinn popped. Amanda and Jimmy are THE go-to when it comes to Harley Quinn and this is their first work on the character.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Jokers Last Laugh Secret Files #1 (2001) – A couple of months later, Amanda and Jimmy do a backup story in this book. The beginnings of the Quinn/Conner/Palmiotti threesome. A Threesome that will become a monthly romp in about 13 years.

Batman #613 (2003) – During Jim Lee’s epic Batman run, he penciled Harley into the Hush story line. He got her right on the cover too. When a talent like Jim Lee draws any character for the first time, it’s time to take notice.

Harley Quinn #38 (2004) – Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard pencils the final issue of Harley’s first comic book run. Nice way to go out right? With Charlie at the helm and a low print run, this makes for an attractive comic.

Suicide Squad #1 (2011) – This comic is essentially Harley’s first appearance “post Flashpoint” and the character in the movie will be in direct correlation to THIS particular time frame. Hence the high mark selling points in the aftermarket. Her second appearance came a week later in Batman #1 (2011).

Suicide Squad #6 (2012) – The origin of Harley Quinn. The first of two parts. Two major comics for ANY Quinn collector. Great cover too.

Suicide Squad #7 (2012) The origin of Harley Quinn concludes. Another stellar cover.

Harley Quinn #0 (2014) – The trio is back together. Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Harley Quinn! Along with Amanda and Jimmy in this issue you have, Adlard, Cooke, Daniel, Hughes, Kieth, Lee, and Simonson just to name a few. First appearance’s of Bernie (the talking beaver. Yep, talking beaver), and Robert Coachman.

New Suicide Squad #1 (2014) – This series is fantastic. The team consist of Harley, Deathstroke, Deadshot, Joker’s Daughter, and Black Mantra.

Secret Origins #4 (2014) – A deeper look into the Harley character. Brought to you by Amanda and Jimmy.

Harley Quinn #10 (2014) – First appearance of the Brooklyn Bruisers team.

Aquaman, seven series number one issues, two of which were limited series. None of the regular series made it past 77 issues. What does this mean exactly? Well it means that Aquaman was never a character taken very seriously. Always on the receiving end of the joke. Nowadays things are a bit different (many thanks to Geoff Johns), although the character still holds the stigma of being a lame duck in many circles, Warner Brothers will be going all in with a solo movie release. Rumor has it that he’ll first appear in the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice first, then we’ll see the solo movie a couple of years later. It’s then we’ll see if the world is truly ready for a live action Aquaman movie.

It was writer Geoff Johns that vowed to make Aquaman a cool character. He’s achieved this feat with many naysayers saying it couldn’t be done. Now the transition to film will be the defining moment for the most powerful water character in the entire DC Universe.

Below are some key Aquaman appearances throughout the years. First appearances, number one issues, appearances in other comics, etc. Debuting from 1941, there are plenty of comics to look for here. Plenty of affordable books along the way here too.

Please remember as always here on InvestComics, read the disclaimer. With that said, there will in fact be books that are not on this list. They were probably inadvertently missed. No problem, list your favorite book below or in the comment section in one of our social media outlets. Also remember that the Aquaman movie comes out in 2018, there are no right or wrong answers here.

Another slow week for the speculator. This means, as it always does, time to hit those bins hard, and scour the walls at your local shop for that gem.

Not too much coming out of a relatively quiet Thursday from the San Diego Comic Con. A couple of things; DC’s Vertigo imprint announced 12 new titles coming this fall, Hasbro’s Stormtrooper figure (the black series) caused near riots, and Image’s Invincible should have a video game/cartoon or something going by next year. Click the red link to buy the first full appearance of Invincible right now. We await several things from SDCC 2015. A possible full trailer for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, a look at the Justice League team together, plus a surprise was announced that includes Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Image Comics’ Outcast trailer, Marvel news, Valiant Entertainment news, and whatever else we aren’t expecting! Be sure to stick with the InvestComics social media for possible tidbits on some key comics regarding the show.

And click HERE for the full list of exclusive items for SDCC 2015. A boatload of goodies!

Harley Quinn #18 features an appearance by Captain Strong. His last known appearance was in 1986. Welcome back Captain! The neat cover here actually not only pays homage to a 1973 cover, but it also happens to be the first appearance too. Action Comics #421 (1973) is the first appearance of Captain Strong and the original cover to this weeks Harley book. Here’s the thing, a 9.6 on Ebay right now is only $200. Yes granted, we’re talking a fourth rate character, but still a better buy than a majority of these ridiculous variants at $200. InvestComics has always said to sell your moderns and buy those back issues. Well here’s your chance. A first appearance from 1973 that includes names like Curt Swan and Dick Giordano in it? 9.6 for $200 no less? A no-brainer here.

Now let’s talk about another Captain arriving this Wednesday. Check out Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1. Looks like a fun book. It’s always great to see Captain Britain in a title isn’t it? A comic InvestComics has been recommending for years now; Marvel Team-Up #65 (1978). It’s the U.S. Debut of Captain Britain. A comic written by Chris Claremont, drawn by John Byrne, and a cover from George Perez/Joe Sinnott. We recommended this comic when it was a $1 book for years. Now it seems to have climbed a bit from that $1 bid. Should have listened! Seriously though, what is not to love about this comic? And this also applies to the Defenders as well. Their first appearance; Marvel Feature #1 (1971). We recommended at $50. Should have listened!

Ant-Man Annual #1; this comic has it all really. A Hank Pym/Scott Lang team-up, a villain from the past comes back, and an introduction of a new character. Yes, this is a pick up this week.

While we eagerly await possible news coming from the Valiant Entertainment group at SDCC, we can look forward to Book of Death #1 this Wednesday. Valiant will start their all new event saga right here. Written by Robert Venditti, art by Doug Braithewaite and Robert Gill. Yes a hit for sure brewing here. Looking forward to a great read.

Here are a few more comics to check out on new comic book day; Rivers of London Body Work #1 (Titan Comics) is sold out. Godzilla In Hell #1 (IDW Publishing). Island #1 (Image Comics). Mercury Heat #1 (Avatar Press).

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 8/27/14

1973237

Ultimate Spider-Man #29

Wool was optioned for a movie. That prompted issue number to be sold out and with that, Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #2 has sold out now too. Stay close to this series for now. Remember, just because a comic book was optioned does not mean anything will ever materialize. Many times the comic market has a knee jerk reaction to the news and then many are stuck with comics that are impossible to sell. The best we do get though are great stories to read.

This week Superman (2011 3rd Series) #34 sees the introduction of the villain known as Machinist. Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. are giving the fans what they want, some new life breathe into DC’s flagship title. Is this in fact a first appearance though or just a New 52 first appearance? The Machinist first appeared in Wildstorm #1 (2006).  Same dude? Probably not.

Robert Kirkman’s Outcast continues to garner attention. The latest edition; Outcast (2014 Image) #3 comes out this week. Issue one and two sold out. Look for issue three to follow that trend.

Last week I recommended Teen Titans #16 (1982), It’s the first appearance of Captain Carrot. I was having some fun and wanted to set a trend to make the book hot. This week I will revisit the wacky, but first let me make a point…….quite a few InvestComics Hot Picks ago I explained that Marvel’s Spider-Verse saga was all a basic ploy to see which solo spider books they can possibly get off the ground and sell. Spider-Verse will bring every single Spider-Man character ever front and center. I compiled a huge Spider-Verse list of the many faces of Spider-Man. It’s a list you’d probably want to keep handy given all of the new Spider characters we’ll see popping up or getting their own comic. Like the new Spider-Woman title. How about a new Peter Porker comic? Wait Peter Porker? Yes. Check out Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 Marvel Universe) #29; Spider-Ham has taken over. So expect A LOT more Spidey books and take overs to occur moving onward towards Spider-Verse, before, during and after. Now let’s get back to the wacky stuff. Peter Porker first appeared in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 (1982). The Ultimate Spider-Ham first appeared in Ultimate FF #5 (2014). Awesome! Let Spider-Verse begin! And click right HERE to check out that InvestComics Spider-Verse Checklist, some great hidden gems in there.

[scrollGallery id=368]

Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #5 will focus on the character Cyborg. I have recommended DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) countless times throughout the years. This comic of course features the first appearance of the New Teen Titans and several new characters. It’s a very obtainable book, not scarce at all. The main reason for the prices to be where they are at. Cyborg first appeared in DCP #26 and he’s also going to be in the Superman vs. Batman film. Will we also get a Teen Titans spin off from this film besides the Justice League? Most likely yes, so buckle in and get ready for DC Comics Presents to become an even hotter book way down the line somewhere. It’s going to be a way for Warner Bros. to attract that younger core audience. The book is an absolute bargain right now with average RAW prices on Ebay going in the $60 range. A 9.2 graded sold for $135 and a 7.5 sold for $81. So here’s what you do. Buy yourself a high grade raw copy. Get George Perez and Marv Wolfman to sign it (get a witness). Grade it, and you have yourself a wonderful resale right now, but more so in the future.

DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) First Appearance of The New Teen Titans.

Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #16 will give a semi-Superman history lesson told by Kamandi. This history class won’t be a bore! Various artists contribute to the different Supermen throughout the years. Should be a great nostalgic look and read.

The Fox channel has a hit on their hands with the show Bob’s Burgers. Now that hit series will become a comic book for the first time; Bobs Burgers (2014) #1. Look for the Midtown Comics Exclusive for only $10. Get some of the cast to sign it. Have it witnessed of course and grade it. It’ll be a unique book to resell to a Bob’s Burgers fan.

Face Value #1 from Autism at Face Value brings the topic of autism front and center. Heroes with autism. It’s an important awareness comic that everyone should check out. If you’d like to learn more about autism and donate go right HERE to the Autism Research Institution.

Other comics you definitely need to check out this week are Wayward (2014 Image) #1, Pop (2014 Dark Horse) #1, Jaegir (2014) #0, Hero Cats (2014 Action Lab) #1, Brainstorm (2014) #1, Shinobi Ninja Princess (2014) #1, and Sundowners (2014) #1.
