Deadpool gets a couple of slots in this week’s Hot Picks article.
Domino will take over the Deadpool And The Mercs For Money team. Not only will she take over the team, but she’ll debut a new team too. Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #4 features the addition of Ape-Man and Hit-Monkey. Since InvestComics gave readers a heads up on the original team in January, in which several branched out into their own books as we predicted. One actually branching out to a cartoon. (See InvestComics Hot Picks  #409 for the first appearance of those characters and see the InvestComics Facebook page on the cartoon debuting one of the characters we were so eager on in January). So with all that we give you Ape-Man’s first appearance (1); Daredevil #10 (1965). The second Ape-Man first appearance (2); Daredevil #157 (1979). And of course, Hit-Monkey first appeared in Hit-Monkey #1 (2010).

Marvel has found success in their mash-up characters in the last couple of years. A mash-up from 2008 makes it’s way back in a big way this week. Venompool will debut in his own series; Deadpool Back In Black #1. Boy will the variant comics be a biggie in the aftermarket. Fanboys will pay top dollar for that graded variant more so. As far as Venompool. This will not be the first time he’s appeared. He first appeared in Cable & Deadpool #50 in 2008. A comic to keep an eye out on being that Marvel may want to up the ante on the Venompool character, which it looks like they are already doing with the debut of this new comic. There are plenty of variants to go around too. So many to choose from, but some more scarce than others. Our favs; The regular Salva Espin cover and Rob Liefeld variant. Writer Cullen Bunn and artist Salva Espin bring the mash-up of the week!

There are those rare times when a comic character actually equates better on screen (big or small) than it does on paper. Jessica Jones is that character. Yes yes we know about Brian Michael Bendis’ Alias, but that series hit the 28th issue and was done. Yes it won some Eisner awards, we get it, but truth be told, if the character was that strong, Marvel would have kept her series going to cash in, even if it was with some other creator. They would have started and restarted a Jessica Jones series like they do with so many other characters, but they never did. That says something. Marvel (Disney) loves making money and the money (interest) was simply never there for them to even care to notice and cash in. The Netflix show absolutely rocks and if you haven’t seen it, you should. Now with the new found interest in Jessica Jones Netflix series, Marvel will try to cash in now! See how this works? Enter Jessica Jones #1. The original team of the Alias comic series returns for this new series. Alias #1 (2001) was the first appearance of Jessica Jones. Brian Michael Bendis writes and Michael Gaydos pencils. This series will be great out of the gate, but will it lose steam once the honeymoon is over? Either way, it’s still going to be an enjoyable read right out of the gate. A definite without a doubt pick up comic this week. Read it, enjoy it. And the Mike Deodato Jr. variant cover gets a big thumbs up too!

Doctor Strange #12 brings back a villain that made his debut in 1962. He’s obviously made appearances since then, but we’re just pointing out that this character is an old one! Baron Mordo’s first appearance was in Strange Tales #111. Have you checked out the InvestComics Doctor Strange Checklist from June of 2015? Click HERE to get those last minute Doctor Strange books.

A slew of variant covers accompany the debut of Marvel’s Champions #1. A new ongoing team book. Marvel’s Champions originally debuted back in 1975’s The Champions #1. That team was old school and the team coming at us on Wednesday is for the millennial.
It looks a though another death may occur in a comic this week. This week it’s Amazing Spider-Man #19. Two cover standouts here too. One from Alex Ross and the other from Aaron Kuder.

DC will debut a new character in a new comic this week. Check out Shade The Changing Girl #1 debut in her own comic. This comic will be written by Cecil Castellucci and art by Marley Zarcone.
Deadman: Dark Mansion Of Forbidden Love #1 will begin a new bi-monthy mini-series. Written by Sarah Vaughn and art by Lan Medina.
It’s very hard to fathom for some reason that the character He-Man never crossed paths with the Thundercats team. Well this crossover actually becomes a reality this Wednesday with DC’s He-Man Thundercats #1. Written by Rob David and Lloyd Goldfine. Pencils by Freddie Williams II.
Speaking of team-ups, two characters get back together again for a new mini-series; Midnighter And Apollo #1.
A possible new villain may appear in Aquaman #8. Batman #8 continues the crossover event; Night of The Monster Men part 4. The story has been fun so far and the Tim Sale cover here is equally as fun.

A few number one issues to look for from Image Comics on Wednesday. Green Valley #1, Romulus #1, Cannibal #1, and Moonshine #1. The creative talent on Moonshine #1, Brian Azzarello (writer) and Eduardo Risso (artist) with a Frank Miller variant makes this comic….”shine” a bit from the others. See what we did there? Hmmm, yeah that was bad.
The cover of Spawn #266 reminds us of the 90’s. Look at that Erik Larsen cover. Spawn, Savage Dragon and Ant. Lovely.
Scout Comics has been killing it as of the past year. We’ve recommended every single Henchgirl comic since its inception and they have all sold out. If you have bought any of the early issues we recommended, you’ve made some serious cash back from these pick-ups in the aftermarket. You’re welcome! This week, Henchgirl #11 and the debut of the a new series; Girrion #1 from writer/artist Tom Lintern.
Speaking of an independent company bringing the goods, Titan Comics’ Hard Case Crime Triggerman #1 comes out.
After-Shock Comics debuts Shipwreck #1 from writer Warren Ellis and artist Phil Hester. This has winner winner chicken dinner all over it. Why the Sheen reference? No idea!

The second straight sell out book from Heavy Metal; Aftermath Big Clean #2.
Oni Press always puts out a great product and we love reporting on it. Angel City #1 from Janet Harvey (writer) and Megan Levens (art).

Not only will Betty Boop be getting her own comic on new comic book day, but there will be at least 9 variant covers coming along with it. Does Dynamite Entertainment know something we don’t know? Betty Boop #1 has the appeal for a younger female audience, why do we need 9 variants again? Is that demo that large that they need to appeal to a young girl wanting to buy all 9+ covers? Just asking? No hate what’s so ever here at all! Just asking…..Oh and we didn’t even talk about the 5 variant covers (including a blank!) for Homies #1. No really, we didn’t make that up. Homies #1; coming to a comic shop near you on 10/5. If those two releases coming from Dynamite do not tickle your fancy, maybe the debut of an original Kung-Fu character/series Intertwined #1 will get your attention. Brought to you by writer Fabrice Sapolsky and artist Fred Pham Chuong.

Rounding out the week, Death Of Hawkman #1 (DC Comics), writer Marc Andreyko and artist Aaron Lopresti and Disney Kingdoms Enchanted Tiki Room #1 (Marvel).

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

Ms. Marvel #1

Buy Now

IC 100 Club Pick: Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) 8.0. When Marvel Studios hits theaters with their first female lead comic book movie, it’s going to be huge. It will make movie goers and comic fans forget about the Wonder Woman flick very, very fast. How can we say this? Well first and foremost, it’s an opinion. Secondly, Warner Bros. has not yet had an answer for any of the Marvel movies as far as the “level” goes. Will the Wonder Woman movie be good? Probably, but Marvel will out-do DC with their female lead movie Ms. Marvel. It will be set in modern day and appeal radically to the younger and older female audiences as Disney KNOWS how to do. It will happen. Disney KNOWS marketing. So with that confidence stated, this week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) graded at a low 8.0 and the low price of $79.99. This low grade will not matter once the movie hits and the popularity of Ms. Marvel is at its peak. This movie will be huge. This first appearance of Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel will be untouchable.

Before reading ahead, we feel we need to warn you that our articles contain very harsh truths in them. Not vulgar language, just a good solid dose of honesty. They always have, they always will. If you are easily offended, cannot come to terms that other people have opinions too beside yourself and especially if you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading. Go back to the other places selling you the farm. This is NOT the place for you. We’re here to have fun and not lie to you. Thank you and enjoy!

The premiere Suicide Squad writer returns for a one shot. Suicide Squad War Crimes Special #1 by John Ostrander.
The introduction of a new hero will happen in Future Quest #4. Writer Jeff Parker and artist’s Steve Rude and Aaron Lopresti are bringing it.
Two DC annuals to check out. First annual ever; Gotham Academy Annual #1 from Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher. The origin of the first Bombshell; Batgirl in DC Comics Bombshells Annual #1 this Wednesday.
As Warner Bros. is a bit late to the superhero movie party, DC is a bit late on the variant cover theme too. Justice League Of America #9 has a Batman v Superman Dawn Of Justice Cover. Who cares right? Well not only is the cover bad as*, it’s drawn by (insert sarcasm) some artist named Jim Lee. $3.99 cover price. We’ll take one please.

The “new” female comic character is still a hot commodity. Mostly hot for a minute, then cools off, but then there are ones that catch on. Will the first appearance of the female Electro in Amazing Spider-Man #17 be a hot ticket? We’ll have to wait and see for about a minute…..or maybe longer.
Marvel will go to the well once again regarding their success with Gwenpool and Spider-Gwen. In All-New Wolverine Annual #1 we’ll see Wolvergwen and Spiderine. Newer mash-up’s here but this time with the all-new Wolverine character. Although the Wolvergwen character looks like a first appearance, a “Gwenverine” character popped up on a variant cover back in August of 2015. Old Man Logan #2 gets the dubious distinction of being that first appearance issue. Seems to be much like the first appearance of Gwenpool, cover only. So is Gwenverine and Wolergwen the same character? We don’t make this stuff up, we just report it.
We’re loving the cover to Silver Surfer #6. It’s the 200th overall issue of Surfer comic book issues. The cover shows many awesome past Silver Surfer comic books surrounding him. It’s neat.

Dark Horse Comics offers fans two number one comics written by two fan fav’s of the industry this week. Witchfinder City Of The Dead #1 will be written by Mike Mignola and World Of Tanks #1 will be written by Garth Ennis. World Of Tanks #1 will be based on a game that has an audience of 110 million players. That’s a whole lot of possible built-in audience to reach! Two debut Dark Horse Comics to pick up. That’s some nice debut reading material here.
IDW Publishing’s Jill Thompsons Killer Inside Me #1 is sold out. A lot of buzz surrounding this book. Look for a possible bounce in the aftermarket as readers latch on to this classic story put into comic book form. They’ll be delighted and the bounce may happen.
It looks as though IDW has an answer to DC’s All-Star Batman. It’s called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1. Various A-list creators will contribute to this new on-going TMNT series. Look for possible introductions in this first issue and as the series progresses. This first issue features a back-up story from Kevin Eastman and Bill Sienkiewicz. Now that’s some serious duo firepower. Count us in on this series and especially this first issue.
Spawn #265 will introduce a new character and will also have Ant make an appearance. Ant was introduced in Ant #1 (2012) from Arcana Studio. HER last known appearance of Ant was in Savage Dragon #180 (2012). Will Erik Larsen bring back Ant for good? Hopefully we see more. We’ll wait and see.

Fans of Image Comics’ Black Magick will be introduced to a new character in Black Magick #3.
The Wytches comic series from Snyder and Jock was a hit. It still has potential to be a bigger hit given the extra interest from a studio eventually. Whether it’s a movie or television, Wytches has that feel that someday it will be bigger, much bigger. This week, Image Comics will feature a black and white pencil only from Wytches #1 in an oversized format of 11×17. This amazing format and eye candy will be called Image Giant-Sized Artists Proof Edition Wytches #1. A must get for comic collectors and fans alike.
Spawn will face his greatest adversary that he never faced before! Yep. In Spawn #259, The Satan Saga Wars begins. The title of this event pretty much sums up who Spawn will be facing off against for the very first time ever. Satan. The Todd McFarlane cover is great, as is the Erik Larsen/Todd McFarlane cover. Spawn fights Satan, this is gonna be good.

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Mr. Negative will be causing all sorts of problems for Spidey in Amazing Spider-Man #6. Did you know that Mr. Negative first appeared in Free Comic Book Day 2007 Spider-Man comic? Now you know!
Two stellar covers for the new Carnage comic this Wednesday has to be mentioned here. The eye candy from Carnage #3 features covers from Mike Deodato and Yasmine Putri. Fantastic.
Marvel goes back to the well this week with Deadpool And Cable Split Second #1. Back in 2004, it was Cable who got first billing in the monthly comic; Cable and Deadpool. That series lasted 50 issues. Times have changed and the money is with Deadpool these days, so the Merc gets first billing now. Did you know that Cable first appeared with Deadpool in New Mutants #98 (1991). Maybe you heard of that issue? Anyway, Rob Liefled had an obvious hand in creating these characters so it’s natural we would get a variant for the new title from him. Seeing that fight cover from Rob, it brought us back to our favorite fight cover; New Mutants #93 (1990). Rob had Wolverine all over Cable on that one. Fun times, fun comics.
While we’re on topic about Rob, he creates the variant cover for Howard The Duck #3 with Gwenpool on the cover. A $60 retail variant. Yikes that is a bit steep! A very very nice variant from Rob nonetheless.
Marvel (Disney) will continue to milk the Star Wars franchise. Nothing wrong with that really. Disney is in business to make money and they are producing a good product, not crap. Check out another new Star Wars comic; Obi-Wan And Anakin #1 this Wednesday. Lots of variants to choose from.
Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1 should be all kinds of a fun read. That Todd Nauck Deadpool Incentive variant is neat.

Each week InvestComics will bring a creator into the spotlight to showcase some of their key books within their career.

Walt Simonson is a legend in the circles of the comic book industry. He is one of the premiere players. An artist, an inker and a writer. The man can do it all and does it all at an extraordinary level.

His body of work could not even be justified in this article it is so vast, but InvestComics will highlight a plethora of comics in Walt’s illustrious, well known, well respected career thus far. Exclusions are bound to happen on this list, these are just some of his works. We hope you enjoy reading, gazing, buying these comics below as much as we have over the years.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

*****PLEASE READ DISCLAIMER BELOW Article*****

Weird War Tales #10 (1973) The first professional work. A backup story. DC owns the distinct honor of discovering him. Thanks DC! Although Marvel would have eventually come along.

Sword of Sorcery #5 (1973) The first solo cover right here.

The Haunt of Horror #1 (1973) The first Marvel work came in this number one issue magazine in a backup story.

Detective Comics #437 (1973) Walt was a fantastic Batman artist/writer. This was his first Batman book, but he didn’t do the Batman character. He did another character that he would “own” and that would be the Manhunter. In a backup role here again. This is also the first appearance of the New Manhunter.

Detective Comics #443 (1974) It is here that Walt would get he first crack at the Batman character on pencils.

Master of Kung-Fu #24 (1975) This is the first official Marvel “comic book” work for Walt. He would be one of three artist on this book.

Pizzazz #10 (1977) Simonson went on to do a lot of Star Wars comics in his career. This is the first Star Wars art he ever did and it was in a magazine. This was also very early Star Wars art regarding comics. Only a few months after the number one Star Wars comic debuted, this magazine debuted. It featured different Star Wars stories in the magazine by different creators each month. Issues 10-13 were all Simonson.

Rampaging Hulk #1 (1977) Here’s the first art on the Hulk character. It was a magazine.

Young Love #125 (1977) Here is one of those that will have you scratching your head. Simonson did the cover for this romance comic.

Thor #260 (1977) Almost all creators get linked to a certain character(s) during their career. Some creators find a niche with a career and they take it to another level, thus making them “that creator” on that particular character(s) that fans relate to. This comic here is not that comic. Well, not yet anyways. Walt Simonson does not find his grove with the Thor character until six years later, but here is the first pencils and a collaborated cover (Joe Sinnott) on the Thor character. More on Thor in a bit…..

Batman #300 (1978) Here is a Batman anniversary issue Walt penciled.

Machine Man #6 (1978) Marvel finally finds Walt a solo cover to do with collaborating with anyone. Jack “King” Kirby penciled and wrote the issue.

Fantastic Four #212 (1979) First Fantastic Four art. The cover only.

Marvel Treasury Edition #28 (1981) Superman and Spider-Man oversize Treasury edition. What is there not to love about this? Walt is only an ink guy only on this book, along with a very long list of others.

Detective Comics #500 (1981) Anniversary issue. Cover art with Joe Kubert, Jim Aparo, Dick Giordano, Carmine Infantion, just to name a few.

Bizarre Adventures #29 (1981) Here’s an interesting one. This magazine comic related book features the cover art by Walt and interior art. He pencils a story written by the great Stephen King. This is King’s first story ever adapted into a comic book type genre. Essentially it’s the first Stephen King in comics.

Marvel and DC Comics Present: The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans #1 (1982) One of the coolest crossover team-ups in the history of Marvel/DC. Walt cover art and pencils. Claremont writes. Do you need anything else here?

Marvel Age #1 (1983) Why this series doesn’t get looked upon more by collectors is still an absolute wonderment to me. Crystar cover by Simonson.

Red Sonja #1 (1983) An awesome Red Sonja cover from Walt here.

Thor #337 (1983) Walt Simonson pencil/ink/writes and does the now iconic cover. It’s the first appearance of Beta Ray Bill. What more can be said about this comic that hasn’t been said yet? This was the game changer for Walt Simonson. This was THE character he owned. Walt made Thor HIS character here. There’s Kirby and the there is Simonson. Walt made Thor #337 the hottest comic on the planet back in the 80′s. It is still a book to own if you don’t already. Beta Ray Bill will eventually make it to the big screen and when he does, look out here. The iconic cover alone is enough to make collectors want it. Walt Simonson solidified himself as a creator right here. As said earlier, every creator has that character(s) that they own. Most creators also have that defining moment in their career where they catch something just right and fans begin the process of bringing them to that next level as they so fittingly deserve. This is that defining moment for Walt Simonson. Thor is Simonson’s, the fans spoke out in 1983. Walt has officially arrived.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/10/14

Lots of comics to cover this week. Hope you have your reading glasses handy and some cash in your pocket this Wednesday.

Uncanny_X-Men_59_InvestComics Spider_Man_Xmen_InvestComics Marvel_Team_Up_19_InvestComicsThe fun starts with Spider-Man and the X-Men (2014) #1. A team-up every fan always loves. This comic will feature the Jurassic Park storyline. Well not really, but it will have two characters from way back in time appear (way back in history time, not real time). Suaron and Stegron (aka the Dinosaur Man). If you’re in the market for a couple of easy gets, Marvel Team-Up #19 from 1974 features the first appearance of Stegron. The best part of this comic; Gil Kane on pencil duties and Len Wein on writing duties. Then you have the big bird (not that big bird) first appearance; Suaron first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #59 (1969). That book had Neil Adams on art duties and the team of Chris Claremont/Roy Thomas on script duties. So there you have it, C level first appearances from A level Legends from the industry. Those are purchases/signature series/graded comics waiting to happen. Not for resale value, for keepsake value. They may not rise in significant value at a quick rate, but they are collectors items because of the names attached.

With the Dr. Strange frenzy upon us within the speculation world, it’s funny how All New Ultimates (2014) #11 plays a part in this Dr_Strange_78_InvestComics Ultimates_Ecstasy_InvestComicsmadness ever so slightly this coming week. You see, the ultimate Ecstasy is making her second appearance in the Ultimate universe. Her first being the previous issue. Ecstasy first appeared with the Dr. Strange universe in 1986’s Dr. Strange #78. Now what does this mean to you? Well it means that if Marvel Studios reaches into their vast character library and pulls her out to be a part of the movie….well you know the rest. This comic as of right now is probably sitting in some 25 cent long box someplace. Not a bad investment here for a quarter right? If anyone finds a few for a quarter, be sure to send a couple to our PO Box as a thank you.

As always, if you’re a regular visitor to the InvestComics website, you will know that these Hot Pick articles have made many speculators turn over some serious cash. The recommendations and predictions that have come to fruition are boundless. There is simply NO other comic book website that has been doing this since 2005. None. In the new Earth 2 Worlds End (2014) #10 Darkseid will be wreaking havoc once again and once again I implore you to get his first appearance before it becomes too far out of reach (see Thanos, which InvestComics recommended many many years ago to buy). The first appearance of Darkseid comes with some ridiculous cameo/first full appearance mumbo-jumbo. As with Incredible Hulk #180/181 does, but with Darkseid, it works the way it’s suppose to work. The cameo in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 (1970) seems to pull more weight in some markets than does Forever People #1 (1971) which features his first FULL appearance. Nonsense really. A cameo is the absolute first appearance ever of a character, end of story. The cameo should always command more money. Not an arm, a leg, an eye, or a foot, a full body/full face AND more importantly the mention of their name. Wolverine first appeared in Hulk #180, that’s it. Darkseid first appears in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134, that’s it. Let’s stop having the nonsense of the stronghold collectors in our hobby dictate what is what. A first look at someone is in fact their first appearance ever, not cameo or anything related to not recognizing the first appearance and that’s it. You can twist it twenty ways till Sunday, it’s their first appearance. Darkseid was mentioned by NAME in issue #134. He then went on to appear in the very next issue too! Yet Forever People #1 is labeled as First FULL appearance and commands some bucks. Wolverine was even mentioned by NAME in Hulk #180, what more do you need in that case too? Absurd. So anyway, getting off the soapbox now I will say that Jimmy Olsen #134 is a get. InvestComics recommended this comic as an extremely strong buy back in mid 2013 right HERE. Not only will you find the MUST buy here, but a Darkseid checklist too! Yes InvestComics is awesome we know.

Forever_People_1_InvestComics Superman_Jimmy_Olsen_InvestComics Earth_2_InvestComics

Spider-Verse Team Up (2014) #2 continues with the red hot Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman. InvestComics did inform you to buy the first Gwen Spidey here on InvestComics Hot Picks right? Oh yes yes of course we did! Anytime anyone wants to donate some hot recommendations to InvestComics, the PO Box is below! Haha! You’ll get a mention on here too, a plug, whatever you want!

Harley_Quinn_InvestComics Spider_Man_InvestComicsAlthough only one comic is completely sold out this week at Diamond, a few are right on the cusp. Let’s do a quick roundup here. Devil’s Due has a hit on their hands with Solitary (2014) #1. The cover is very reminiscent of the cooled down, but once red hot Adventures of Superman #14. Sinergy (2014 Image) #2 is a sold out comic walking. If you’re a fan, get it before it goes to the second print. Look for Bitch Planet (2014) #1 to sell out as well. A fantastic creative team delves into the woman’s prison system. Sounds like a hoot! The popular East of West gets a new number issue; East of West The World (2014) #0. And it’s sold out already. While Magdalena has always been popular among fans and a fun read, it never did or does well in the spectator market. Magdalena Seventh Sacrament (2014 Image) #1 will sell out and no one in the aftermarket will care. Erik Larsen pulls out all the stops with his nearly sold out anniversary comic; Savage Dragon (1993 2nd Series) #200. A few variant covers accompany this milestone issue. Congrats to one of the hardest working creators in the industry; Erik Larsen. Avatar has quietly put together a nice intelligent read comic series with God is Dead. This week however, God is Dead (2013 Avatar) #25 will have a double sized, new story arc jumping on point. So what are you waiting for? Jump on. Nothing like have some squirrels kick some ass in a comic book. Check out Squarriors (2014 Devils Due) #1 for some reading and squirrels kicking ass. Harley Quinn + number one issue = a hot comic; Harley Quinn Holiday Special (2014) #1. Although this doesn’t give any hints of significance or smell like a funny cigarette, so don’t expect anything to smell too good from this one but a very awesome Harley book.

Gwen_Stacy_Spider_Woman_InvestComics Savage_Dragon_200_InvestComics Solitary_InvestComics

And wrapping up, here are some must read and gets from the number one issue market; The Valiant (2014 Valiant) #1, Guardians of the Galaxy (2013 3rd Series) Annual #1, Amazing Spider-Man (2014 3rd Series) Annual #1, Uncanny X-Men (2013 3rd Series) Annual #1, Eternal (2014 Boom) #1, and Itty Bitty Bunnies Cock Fight (2014) #1.

See you soon. Invest wisely.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 2/19/14

[scrollGallery id=335]

The New Warriors will make their triumphant return this week in New Warriors (2014 5th Series) #1. The series is on its fifth volume and maybe the fifth time is a charm? Well the original series from 1990 did last 75 issues, then the 1999 series went to 10, then in 2005 they made it to 6, then in 2007 they made it to 20 issues. So what does this all mean? Well it basically means the obvious right? Don’t expect a big run from this team. Although stranger things have happened, but one thing is for certain, this series will start off on absolute fire. Its best as a speculator to jump on this early and reap the most out of the market before the series begins its inevitable freefall. So where to start? Well for starters you should have Thor #411 (1989) in your collection by now; the first appearance of the New Warriors.  This very easy obtainable issue can be found anywhere at any time. The New Warriors (2014 5th Series) #1 features High Evolutionary. His first appearance is in Thor #134 (1966), an issue written by Stan Lee with art from Jack “King” Kirby. Thor #134 features a stunning 6 first appearances including High Evolutionary. A must book for your keepsake collection.

Four variants accompany the new release. The most bang for your buck will be either the $65 or $125 variant. Get either one CGC signature series’ (9.8) and flip them. Do it while the iron is hot though because as previously mentioned, the series will probably cool off quite a bit sooner rather than later.

Staying on topic with the New Warriors, the leader of the group Nova may have an intro of a new character in Nova (2013 5th Series) #13. It also features Beta Ray Bill. Another one of those comics that should be in your stash, but just in case; The classic Thor #337 (first appearance of Beta Ray Bill). Check it out.

Here’s the bottom line with the New Warriors folks. If there is success with the Marvel Cosmic Universe release of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, look for an expansion within that realm for Marvel. InvestComics has been saying it for years now, but the cosmos awaits the Marvel film universe and if it hits big, it’s going to be huge, Star Wars big. Rocket Raccoon will be the modern day Yoda with a serious chip on his shoulder. Marvel will seek to expand of the cosmos and will probably take a look at either Nova or the entire New Warriors team. More likely Nova here, so be on top of this.

Justice League (2011) #28 will have to be checked out for the same reason Nova #13 is getting looked at. A possible intro within the pages, have a look.

Jamal Igle will be pulling art duties on an all new Terminator book; Terminator Enemy of My Enemy (2014 Dark Horse) #1. Jamal is a talent, must check on this comic.

Undertow (2014) #1 from Image Comics will be sold out soon. Be sure to possibly jump on this comic for some aftermarket goodness.

Speaking of aftermarket goodness, check out X-Files Conspiracy Teengage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) #1. There will be a regular priced variant cover from Michael Walsh and a $25 variant from Joe Carroney. Get these CGC signature Series from both Eastman and David Duchovny; you will have paper Gold my friend.

More aftermarket goodness lies in Savage Dragon #193. The cover sports the “1st issue bold new direction” nonsense, but it’s the $10 variant that can produce some nice payback for you. The variant cover is a team-up of Erik Larsen and Todd McFarlane. Get the both of them to sign this cover (CGC Sig Series) and you have yourself a nice CGC book to resell.

Other number one comics to check out this week are Iron Man (2012 5th Series) Annual #1, Nancy Dragon In Hell One Shot (2014) #1, Loki Ragnarok And Roll (2014) #1, and White Suits (2014) #1.

….And finally, Dynamite Entertainment’s follow up this week to their successful hit series; Bad Ass (2014 Dynamite) #2.

Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

Amazing_SpiderMan_342_Amazing_SpideMan_344_Superior_SpiderMan

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/18/13

If you were a comic book fan back in the 90’s you will remember the fun that followed the Todd McFarlane Amazing Spider-Man run. A fellow by the name of Erik Larsen took over the reins for a while and the ride was just as superb a ride as from McFarlane. So many characters introduced and one of which will be returning this week in Superior Spider-Man (2012) #24. Check out Cardiac in his first appearance by the stellar Mr. Larsen in Amazing Spider-Man #344(1990). Before Cardiac was his villainy self he was Dr. Wortham in Amazing Spider-Man #342(1989). Fun times those 80’s/90’s Spidey runs were. Fun times…….So in closing, with the recent Spider-Man 2 trailer coming out, it’s a safe bet to think we will see more Spidey coming our way. Actually it’s a sure bet, Sony pictures said so. The question remains. Who is to get the tap on the shoulder to get in there next? No one knows, but maybe, just maybe Cardiac will be answering that call. You never know!

[scrollGallery id=325]

A return appearance and an end for a Spider-Man book this week. Check out the last issue of Scarlet Spider (2012 2nd Series) #25 as many questions are answered with some surprises as well.

The new Lobo shows up in the latest Supergirl book. Check out Supergirl (2011 5th Series) #26 for that. If you are one that pines for the old Lobo, don’t forget that his first appearance is in a very affordable comic; Omega Men #3 (1983).

Batman and Robin (2011 2nd Series) #26 will give readers the retelling (new 52 style) of Two-Face’s origin. Batman’s foe first appeared in Detective Comics #66 (1942). He’s a great villain, but doesn’t deserve the cash that some dealers/sellers ask, but they’ll get it nonetheless. Staying with the Batman theme here. The successful Harley Quinn #0 leads into Harley Quinn (2013) #1 this week. Expect sellouts on this one. Harley is a popular one……for now. Do not put all of your eggs in one basket here. Harley is a cool character, but she will not sustain an uptick in the long run. That said, the Adam Hughes variant looks like a sold out book with nice profit potential there. Signature Series would be a nice way to go with this one. As always, high grade too!

Sinister Dexter (2013 IDW) #1 will make its U.S. Debut. A popular comic strip in the UK, now comes to IDW. If this comic hits right, you may want to look for 2000 A.D. #992 (1996) as the earliest first appearance found. Probably nothing to get your hopes over, so don’t go ga ga over this.

X-Men (2013) 3rd Series #8 will feature the debut on Monet. It’s always nice to catch a first appearance in an X-Men book, so be sure to check this out.

A recent fan of InvestComics reached out to thank me for some Hot Pick advise. InvestComics recommend Voice in the Dark #1 (sold out, second print already printed) as he flipped the comic for $12. This Wednesday Voice in the Dark (2013 Image) #2 will hit the shelves. What will this comic bring? The speculator always has to be careful with the second issue. The number two issue (and 3) are essentially the most vital in a series as far as the speculation market goes. Why is that? The follow-up issue to a number one issue must be met with the same interest as the first or the series will fall flat in the aftermarket. Word of mouth will get around as a YEA or Nay on this series after Wednesday. You must keep a pulse on what the fans are saying as well as the aftermarket. Being on time is another huge factor, but we’re talking about interest in storyline here right now. The story has to captivate the interest of the fan in the second issue. If it does not, the aftermarket is nil.

All New X-Men #20Locke and KeySome number one issues to check out this week; Teen Titans Go (2013) #1 will be a “go” to book this week. Look for tremendous interest here. A cool storyline hits Illegitimates (2013 IDW) #1 and check out the Bill Willingham variant on this one, another zombie book 8-bit Zombies (2013 Antarctic Press) #1, an interesting plot line in Midas Flesh (2013 Boom) #1, another Star Wars comic Star Wars Darth Vader and Cry of Shadows (2013) #1, Ghost is back Ghost (2013 Dark Horse) #1, and Lisa gets her own book Wonderful World of Lisa Simpson (2013) #1.

Also check out the awesome variant cover from Locke and Key (2013 7th Series) Alpha #2. Dave Sim pays homage to Spidey.

Rounding out this week we see the cover to All New X-Men (2012) #20. Every so often I link fans back to the InvestComics special I ran over a year ago called Romantic X-Men Images. It’s a collection of X-Men covers that depict various X-Men team members in the act of public displays of affection. Why this particular team has so many covers like this is a bit mind boggling really. So I will add the cover of All New X-Men #20 to this collection of Romantic X-Men Covers. If you missed the original article with the covers, click HERE.

Thanks again for your patience everyone. See you next week!

Invest wisely.

HOT PICKS

Okay Hot Picks time. There are certainties in life. The character Thanos is one such case. So is the fact that last Sunday InvestComics informed you guys/gals that East of West #1 is a not to miss book. Yes, listen to the Broker when he tells you about the certainties in the collectors market. It’ll do your wallet some good. So getting back to Thanos now, if you ever doubted anything in the speculation market, this one would not be the one to doubt. If you don’t own or are thinking about owning Iron Man #55, stop thinking and do it. I cannot stress enough how much Thanos is going to make an impact on the movie side of things. The best comparison to make here is actually quite simple. Thanos will be the modern day Darth Vader. I have said this before and I will keep saying it. Thanos’ impact in the theaters will directly impact the back issue market. This said, this week Thanos Rising (2013) #1 will be altering the Marvel Universe as we know it. Yes that villain Thanos is going to bring it and you better be ready. This dude is a bad ass.

…..More certainties this week; Harbinger Wars (2013) #1. This comic will be a quick sell out, so you better grab one off the shelf before they disappear.

Superior Spider-Man (2012) #7 will see the return of Cardiac. The first appearance of Cardiac came in Amazing Spider-Man #342. Want to feel old? This comic was penciled by Erik Larsen 23 years ago!! 1990….23 years ago!! Wow.

DC Comics celebrates with a special issue of Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #19. “Mystery of the 900!” Umm, okay.

….More certainties this week; Regular Show #1. This book will be harder to find than any other in the aftermarket for cover price after Wednesday. Yep.

So with Venom (2011 Marvel) #33 we get the ol’ homage cover thingy going. Isn’t that nice? One little thing here though. Spawn #222 a few issues ago did the same exact thing. Two comics in such close proximity of each other paying homage to Todd McFarlane’s (paid himself homage; he’s proud of himself) Amazing Spider-Man #316. Click on the collage below to see a bigger image of all 3 covers side by side. Which one do you like best?

Venom

Okay so wrapping up. How about a bunch of number one and number zero issues to look out for? Miss Fury (2013 Dynamite) #1 (Look at that cover – holy assets Batman!), Robyn Hood vs Red Riding Hood (2013 Zenescope) #1, Steam Wars (2013 Antarctic Press) #0 (interesting concept here, Star Wars theme = sold out), Tales of Fear (2013 Aazurn) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #0, Snow Angel (2013 Dark Horse) #0, Last of Us American Dreams (2013 Dark Horse) #1, andPolarity (2013 Boom) #1.

OUTER SPACE PLATEAU
Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon Hits Issue 175

BERKELEY, CA — 13 May, 2011 — Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon is celebrating the 175th issue of his long-running Image Comics title this August… or is he? After being killed not once but three times in the past 30 issues, readers might be wondering if the green-skinned, fin-headed freak that awakes in SAVAGE DRAGON #175 to find himself rocketing through space is actually the real deal… but they’ll have to read this special 48-page anniversary issue to find out for sure!
“I’ve really run Dragon through the ringer over the last few years,” Larsen explained. “Even though he’d essentially been killed by a mind-and-body-snatching monster called Virus back in issue #147 and then again by Overlord in #150, when it came to wrapping up the ‘Emperor Dragon’ saga, it became pretty clear that even with all the body-switching shenanigans, things couldn’t just go back to the way they were.

“I knew he had to die… but what then? After focusing on Dragon’s son Malcolm for several issues, SAVAGE DRAGON #175 answers that question. Definitively, I hope!”
Written, penciled and inked by Larsen, with a Vanguard back-up story by writer Gary Carlson and artist Frank Fosco, SAVAGE DRAGON #175 promises to set the stage for the next several years’ worth of Dragon tales.
The story itself focuses both on Malcolm Dragon, as he faces his greatest challenge yet in the form of the nigh-omnipotent Overlord, while someone who looks an awful lot like his dead father tries to make sense of a new life and a new reality when he finds himself aboard a spaceship headed for parts unknown.

“There are some who confuse what Erik’s doing on SAVAGE DRAGON with standard rock ’em, sock ’em superhero stuff, but like Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass and Robert Kirkman’s INVINCIBLE, this is a series that constantly pushes the boundaries,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “Very few superhero comics are as uncompromising or as propelled by change as SAVAGE DRAGON, and nearly 20 years after it first began, it’s still one of my favorite superhero comics ever.”

SAVAGE DRAGON #175 (JUN110478), a 48-page full color comic with a cover price of $4.99, is available for order in the June issue of Previews and will be on sale August 31.

DC introduces a couple of new charters this week. Keep your eyes open for Batman & Robin #20 with White Knight, as well as Flash #9 with Hot Pursuit. Superman is introduced to the “new” Wonder Woman in Superman #708. The cool thing about this issue is that Superman thinks he knows her already; he just can’t quite place it…..yet. Green Lantern fans will be all over the new Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #7 this week. It’s the prelude to “War of the Green Lanterns”. These Green Lantern event storylines keep on coming! Speaking of Green Lantern, isn’t it wonderful to still see the rivalry between DC and Marvel? This past week comic collectors saw Marvel’s first cover to the Event story named “Fear Itself”. This week DC releases a reprinting of the Green Lantern Fear Itself graphic novel from 1999. Coincidence? No, just some good old fashion competition.

Marvel comes in with a very busy week. Starting with Amazing Spider-Man #654. Marvel promises that “Things will never be the same” theme with this Spidey issue. Maybe one of these days, we’ll all really be shocked and say, “wow, now THAT is changing things!” Will Marvel deliver? Let’s see on Wednesday morning! Switching from changes to secrets, see what Nick Fury has been hiding for decades? Marvel once again beating on the proverbial hype machine drum says this issue will SHOCK you. Well, on to Wednesday morning for another shocker. Make sure to bring your Xanax, it may be a rough morning. Back to Spidey for a second, Ultimate Spider-Man #153 is the beginning of the end for the Ultimate Spider-Man in what looks to be a prelude into the “Death of Spider-Man” story. An interesting blast from the past from Marvel with Power Man & Iron Fist #1 comes out this week. Whatever happened to Cloak and Dagger? Well that’s another story for another time. So with the number 1 issue, we naturally should find when the first time these two heroes hooked up. Look for Power Man (1974) #48. Check out these names attached this comic, ready? Claremont, Byrne, Kane, Sinnott, and Goodwin. Wow that’s some lineup huh? All of this for $14! This is a no-brainer collectors. Anyone remember the 90’s in the comic book world? Everything you bought was going to send your next kid off to college, set up for an early retirement, or buy that new car you wanted. Rob Liefeld was a one of the main reasons for the boom. Collectors either loved him or hated him. Rob seemed to introduce characters, create characters at an alarming rate. Whether it was for Marvel or Image, didn’t matter, collectors loved buying his stuff. Fast forward to 2011. Onslaught #1 will feature, not 1, but 2 covers from Rob Liefeld this week. Both essentially the same exact covers, but who cares?? It’s the 90’s….err wait it’s 2011. Nah, just have fun with it will ya! Onslaught’s first appearance was in X-Man #15 (1996). Buy this comic in some $1 bin at any local comic shop.  We’ll get back to the 90’s in a minute, but want to see a good fight this week? How about Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimate’s #1?
