Detective Comics #951 begins a new storyline from writer James TynionIV, ‘League of Shawows’. Art by Christian Duce.
New JLA series begins; Justice League Of America #1, written by Steve Orlando and art by Ivan Reis.
Writer Hope Larson continues the ‘Son of Penguin’ storyline in Batgirl #8. The second appearance of Penguins son; Ethan Cobblepot.
Astro City hits its 100th anniversary issue; Astro City #41. This issue will have a couple of character introductions. Covers by Alex Ross, written by Kurt Busiek and art from Brent Eric Anderson.

It’s hard to believe the Thunderbolts will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in Thunderbolts #10 this Wednesday. Way back in Incredible Hulk #449 (1997), we got our first look at the then Thunderbolts team. The team has changed a number of times over the years, but that 1997 book was their first appearance. The 20 year old comic is still relatively affordable in some places on Ebay. Make sure you click our RED link to see the pricing and availability.
The Spider-Man Deadpool #14 cover shows Deadpool and Spidey at a comic convention. There are a few Deadpool cosplayers vying for position for an opportunity photo with Wade and there are many Deadpool cosplayers scattered throughout. It’s fun/silly comic cover scenes like this that wind up getting speculators in a frenzy over a first appearance somewhere. Maybe this cover features the first appearance of Rabbitpool? Bunnypool? Afropool?

For some reason, when the Elektra character debuts a new series, it always starts off red hot, but then tails off. We have faith this will not be the case for the new series beginning on Wednesday. Look for quick initial interest for Elektra #1, written by Matt Owens and art from Juan Cabal. If you like it, be sure to support the comic and buy the next issue(s).

Indie Hot Picks;
IDW Publishing delivers a few comics on this week’s Hot Picks list.
Revolutionaries #2 features the all new Storm Shadow.
If you’re an animal lover, there’s a comic for you this week. Check out IDW’s Animal Noir #1. Writer/artist Izar Lunacek tells the tale of animals that talk, wear clothes, smoke and investigate a prey fantasy film. We think this may not be a comic for the kiddies.
TMNT Universe #7 reveals the new Metalhead.
IDW also offers up Cosmic Scoundrels #1, Andy Suriano and Matt Chapman bring this web series to life. Two annuals; Judge Dredd Annual #1 and My Little Pony Annual #1.

Every new Black Mask comic release sells out (mostly). They offer up Quantum Teens Are Go #1. Written by Magdalene Visaggio and art by Eryk Donovan.

Image one shot; Belfry #1 will probably sell out. Writer/artist Gabriel Hardman delivers a horror story that may have fans asking for more. It starts here.
Speaking of sold out comics, Old Guard #1 will probably join Belfry #1 as the duo will show strong sales out of the gate. Old Guard #1, a story of old soldiers that won’t die. Written by the awesome Greg Rucka and art from Leandro Fernandez.
A sold out comic from Press Gang in 2016 makes its way to Image comics. The Anime style Sun Bakery #1 from writer/artist Corey Lewis.

Fantastic Four #254 (1983) – As with most comic book characters, there is always one creator that defines the character to the point that the majority of collectors will associate that particular character with “them”. Batman/Miller, Spider-Man/McFarlane, Green Lantern/Adams, Nick Fury/Steranko…..you get the idea. We’re not putting She-Hulk on the scale of those characters, but the creator is the one we’re talking about here. This comic is the first time John Byrne writes and draws She-Hulk in a comic book. Byrne/She-Hulk.

Avengers #233 (1983) – John Byrne fill in issue. It also happens to be part of his Fantastic Four #254 story. John writes and John draws. He doesn’t do the next issue and he didn’t do the previous issue. What John wants, John gets.

Thor #334 (1983) – Jennifer first appears in a Thor comic, with her Avengers team of course. Three issues later though, The Thor character will never be the same. Going from a B-lister to an A-lister, but that’s another story for another day.

The Thing #5 (1983) – John Byrne writes. She-Hulk appears in several issues of the Thing, starting here. Appearing in a solo role.

Doctor Strange #67 (1984) – First time in a Doctor Strange book. As an Avenger.

Marvel Graphic Novel #18 (1985) – John Byrne gets an entire book to draw and write on the She-Hulk. Not just any book, a Marvel graphic novel. That’s 72 oversized pages of awesome John Byrne She-Hulk.

Fantastic Four #291 (1986) – This cover pays homage to Action Comics #1. She-Hulk takes the place of Superman and holds the car above her head. This John Byrne cover is on point.

Fantastic Four #293 (1986) – Jerry Ordway provides this great cover of the She-Hulk.

Thing #36 (1986) – She-Hulk vs Ms. Marvel. No not THAT Ms. Marvel, the “new” Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura) that appeared a few issues prior in Thing #27. Sharon last appeared in a comic book in 2007, but this checklist isn’t about Sharon.

Marvel Comics Presents #18 (1989) – She-Hulk story written and drawn by John Byrne.

Sensational She-Hulk #1 (1989) – Origin retold. John Byrne start the second series. Writer/artist here. Awesome Byrne cover here as well. Actually, from here on out every single John Byrne She-Hulk cover in this series is stellar. The number one cover here still remains as one of the most iconic She-Hulk covers of all time. This series acted as the modern day Deadpool series does today. Breaking the fourth wall and complete zany-ness. John Byrne’s run here was simply a work of art in every sense of the word. If a television show ever hits, this comic (series) might be the place to go as far as speculation is concerned. We feel that the TV series (total speculation here) would be based more from here and not the first series. Again, we’re speculating and could be completely incorrect. No one knows. Invest wisely!

Sensational She-Hulk #2 (1989) – First appearance of Weezi Mason.

Marvel Age #76 (1989) – As a growing trend for quite a while, Marvel or John Byrne loved putting Jennifer in a bathing suit on his covers.

Sensational She-Hulk #39 (1992) – And another awesome cover from Byrne.

Sensational She-Hulk #40 (1992) – The first appearance of Marvel Editor at the time Renee Witterstaetter as herself. Renee has done a ton of writing and coloring on top of her editorial work. She’s often seen at Michael Golden’s booth at your local convention. The cover here….wow. Why was John Byrne so into sexually exploiting the She-Hulk on so many covers?? They must have sold well to the fanboys. This issue is the most expensive aftermarket comic in the entire Sensational She-Hulk. More than the corrective color issue a few issues back.  A scarce book here drives up the price and one of the last sexual innuendo covers in this run. John Byrne officially runs into the “political correctness police”. Pushed the envelope too far according to Marvel standards we guess.

Sensational She-Hulk #41 (1992) – The first time creator John Byrne appears (as himself) in the She-Hulk series.

This issue would be the last Byrne issue as Jennifer looks for a new creative team to take over her comic series. John Byrne appears in this issue and says that this comic should die (be canceled) due to the fact he’s not on it anymore.

Sensational She-Hulk #52 (1993) – This issue features an Adam Hughes cover!

Sensational She-Hulk #54 (1993) – The first official appearance of Jennifer’s momma into the Marvel universe; Elaine Ann Banner Walters.

Sensational She-Hulk #60 (1994) – The series ends here. It was a good ride. 60 issues. 14 years later. Penciler and Cover artist Pat Olliffe pays homage to John Byrne’s number one issue cover. Fantastic job here from Pat. Sorry to see you go Jennifer!

Creator Spotlight – Michael Turner

Michael Turner Wonder Woman

The comic industry lost one of the industries best talents eight years ago. Michael Turner would have turned 45 years old on April 21st. He was a fan favorite that delivered on every single cover he put out. His pencils were unmistakable. His covers were remarkable. Michael died on June 27th 2008 at the young age of 37. Gone way too soon, but he left fans with the memory of his work. A vast body of work that spans from 1994 to 2008. Recently though, Turner’s art has been showing up once again through exclusive variant covers. They’ve garnered a lot of attention and have sold out….quickly. Michael Turner is doing it again, making fans love him all over again.

Here are a few of our favorite books. We couldn’t list them all, so maybe your favorite was left off. No hard feelings. His body of work is simply too expansive. Too many to choose from. Enjoy our list below.

Thanks Michael, your work will always live on.

**Please note. There are many variations to Michael Turner comics. Many covers, many titles holding the the same name with different years, publishers, etc. When clicking the RED links or comic cover, some results will bring random comics not pertaining to the particular comic you clicked. Rom #59 (1984) – Legend Steve Ditko takes over the art duties for the remainder of the Rom series. Unfortunately the Rom series begins to see the light at the end of the tunnel. An Ant-Man appearance in this issue.
Rom #61 (1984) – Steve Ditko art. Here’s a fun book to hunt down for only one reason. That black cover. See if you can score a 9.8 grade or higher. Might be challenging for a 32 year old comic. And besides, look at the creator names on this book anyway, Mantlo. Guice, Austin, Mazzucchelli, and Ditko. Not just any book to get graded.
Rom #62 (1985) – Steve Ditko art. Michael Zeck cover.
Rom #65 (1985) – Steve Ditko pencils ALL of these characters; Avengers, X-Men, West Coast Avengers, Soviet Super Soldiers, Dynamic Defenders (which includes Valkyrie, Beast, Iceman, Gargoyle, Angel, and Moondragon), Captain Britain, and many more. This issue is a must have in your Steve Ditko collection.

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Most of the time, some of the more obscure titles make their way onto Ebay later on in the week or right on/at/before new comic book day on Wednesday. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

We have NO control of release dates nor will we change our article to accommodate a change in shipping, release date or cancellation. We also use the phrase “sold out” in our articles on a regular basis. “Sold out” means at the distributor. Hyperion #1 – Marvel’s latest Superman push. Maybe they want to eventually have a Superman type movie one day. Maybe Disney wants that. And what Disney wants, Disney gets.

Obi-Wan And Anakin #3 – Regular readers on InvestComics know we recommend ANY Star Wars comic. Not only for the fantastic story lines throughout Marvel’s galaxy far far away, but also the potential of a new major Star Wars character getting introduced. That said, Obi-Wan and Anakin visit a new world this Wednesday. A new world could mean a new character!

Venom Space Knight #5 – And speaking of new characters. Check out the new Panda character named Pik Rollo in this comic. That Ariel Olivetti cover kills too.

Delete #1 – The Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, and Justin Gray team is at it again. This time with a Devils Due Publishing release. A must read of course.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #56 – This comic is sold out across the board. Regular and variants. The solicit point to the first appearance of Leatherhead in this issue……..but that’s not the complete truth. Check the InvestComics Hot Picks article to find the true first appearance of Leatherhead.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Avengers #154 (1976) Graded 9.4. there are two standouts here regarding this pick. Let us tell you what the other non-standouts are first. It’s a 1976 book graded at a nice 9.4. It’s the first appearance of Tyrax. Legend, George Perez with interior art. Now let’s hit on the two standouts. First, the cover art is by Al Migrom and comic book legend Jack ‘King’ Kirby. Second, this graded CGC comic is priced at a Buy It Now for only $59.99. Okay one more fantastic thing….free shipping. This must be in your collection. Avengers, George Perez, Al Milgrom, first appearance, and Jack Kirby?! A 9.4 for $59.99 with FREE shipping. No-brainer here. Better grab it before it’s gone.

IDW introduces Leatherhead in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #56. Leatherhead actually first appeared back in 1988’s Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6 (Mirage Publishing).

Bruce Wayne is back as Batman in Batman #50. Here is Synder and Capullo’s final Batman comic. They’ve had a fine run to say the least. Does it equate to Batman #1 in their run costing so much money in the aftermarket? More questions; Does that comic contain a major first appearance? A death? A creators first work? A low low print run? If the answer was ‘no’ to all of these questions, then the answer to our original question was answered. Here’s another thing. Look to the right upper hand side of the graded Batman #1’s. It’s blank. Nothing there. Not even a new costume reference. Not hating, we absolutely loved the run. Just need to point out the obvious and separate the boys from the men. Long term…..be wise youngsters, invest wisely.
Also reach their 50th issue this week will be Wonder Woman #50.
An awesome fight will be going down in Deathstroke #16. Deathstroke vs. Red Hood. Ding! Ding! Fight!
The Harley Quinn character faces a new direction in her life. Witness it in Harley Quinn #26.
Creator Cory Nord gives fans some eye candy this week. Check out the cover to Suicide Squad Most Wanted Deadshot Katana #3.

The first meeting (fight) between Angela and the new Thor takes place in Angela Queen Of Hel #6. No hair pulling or cat scratching here folks!
The Howling Commandos Of S.H.I.E.L.D. #6 will have the team searching for ORRGO. ORRGO has been used sparingly over the last 53 years. Maybe a little over a dozen appearances? Crazy right? ORRGO’s first appearance was in Strange Tales #90 (1961). A book from Jack Kirby, Don Heck, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee. Wow, what a line up.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.
Doesn’t Hyperion remind you a bit of Superman on a couple of his covers to Hyperion #1? Maybe Marvel is trying its hand again in trying to deliver their version of Superman. Marvel last tried back in 2000 with Sentry. Sentry was basically Marvel’s Superman at the time. They don’t really have that “Superman” type character. They really don’t need one. Fast forward to Hyperion #1. Marvel may be going back to the well again with the striking resemblance on those covers. Hyperion first appeared (cameo) along with Squadron Sinister in Avengers #69 (1969). His first full appearance was in the next issue; Avengers #70. Sentry (Robert Reynolds), first appeared in The Sentry #1 (2000).
Is The New Avengers #8 comic the first appearance of American Kaiju? It might be.
Obi-Wan And Anakin enter a new world in Obi-Wan And Anakin #3. You know what that means right? New world, new characters!

Totally Awesome Hulk #4 – Women of power variant from Meghan Hetrick for the win. But that Ultimates #5 Women of Power variant from Yasmine Putri is stellar too! Okay we’ll call a tie this week. That all said, we still think the title of the Hulk book is a bit silly, not changing our minds on that one.

InvestComics gave our fans a heads on on Monstress #1 back in the InvestComics Hot Picks #396 article. Here’s a recap from that article; “There are a few reasons why to love Monstress #1 from Image Comics. First and foremost, it’s written by the talented Marjorie Liu. Second, it’s drawn by X-23 artist Sana Takeda. Third, it’s a new ongoing series, and fourth, it contains 66 (yes 66) pages of comic story with no interruptions. All for a $4.99 price point. There are currently none of these comics available on Ebay right now.” So with all of that, we tell you that Monstress #2 will be out this coming Wednesday. Buy it.
The new Image comic; Symmetry #1 has the looks and the making of a possible sell out. The same can be said about Violent #1. Two Image Comics to look out for this week.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Marvel teases an appearance of Venom Hulk in the new Contest of Champions #3. Hopefully we see this within the pages and not get let down. In case you’re wondering, Venom Hulk first appeared back in 1989’s What If…? #4. The title of the story was “What If the Alien Costume Had Possessed Spider-Man?” In the story, the Alien Symbiote attacks the Hulk and alas, Venom Hulk! So that would be the first appearance.
Not only is there a possible first appearance(s) in Deadpool #3 this week, but the variant cover is a homage to X-Force #2 (1991) by Rob Liefeld. Which happens to be the second appearance of Deadpool. Anyway, the variant cover will be done by…..Rob Liefeld. Paying homage to yourself is sweet. And it’s sold out, that’s sweet too!

One of the hottest Marvel characters at the moment is Gwenpool. Marvel knows this. They know very well. What to do? What to do? Well if you’re Marvel you cash in, hence the new Gwenpool Special #1 comic this Wednesday. Tremendous eye candy from J Scott Campbell (Midtown Comics) and Robbi Rodriguez. The two covers provided by them will make comic fans take notice. If for some reason this comic possesses a key first appearance, it will be an explosive comic. If it doesn’t, it’s still going to sell out and be a good aftermarket book because it’s Gwenpool’s first solo number one comic. Gwenpool fever, catch it.

Spider-Man 2099 #4 may hold a first appearance. Check that one out. Check out Star Wars Annual #1 because it looks as though it will be the first appearance of Haarkon Dak! You know what happens when there is a first appearance in a Star Wars book right? A must get for any Star Wars fan and comic collector. A must get. Got that?

A dark cover from Valiant Entertainment this week! Ninjak #3. There are 3 different glow in the dark covers to choose from. This is most excellent. Great storytelling and a very cool glow in the dark cover! Yes, we dig it. We’ll also get a final issue Fred Hembeck variant with Unity #25. Legend Fred Hembeck on a Valiant Entertainment comic? Yep! Awesome.

With the recent release of a new teaser trailer from TwitchFilm, InvestComics wanted to quickly give speculators three comic books to possibly look for. Although there is no solid validity to the trailer, it’s still a good looking Russian superhero team to hit the screen, if ever.

Here are three comics you can buy/bid on right now by clicking on them if you’d like to get ahead of the curve a bit. But first, here is the trailer, once again, thank you to TwitchFilm…..

We’re about to approach a heavy topic here, but it’s reality and it’s part of this characters make up so we need to discuss it.

As racism is so prevalent these days, Stan Lee and the mighty Marvel crew back in the 1960’s were tackling the issue head on through funny books. They obviously did not stand for the hate mongering that existed so front and center back then. They took a stand. Not to say they don’t today, but back then taking a stand on racism was more of an outside the box thing to do and a noble one at that. As it is noble today too.

Nowhere is the topic of racism more predominant than with the character Black Panther. The first African born superhero character debuted in 1966 and Marvel Comics made sure the readers knew that racism was going to be a huge part of the character development. The Marvel crew took the same path during war times with Hitler and the Nazi’s. Showing how the hatred will always lose because of the ignorance, the non-education, the intolerance, and the emotional disconnect toward humanity.

Yes the Black Panther character is, if not one of the most important comic characters to ever be created. He wasn’t an alien from another planet with super human strength, he doesn’t have mutant powers, no he was not accepted because of the altering difference of powers he possessed over a human being or the knowledge of him being an alien, he wasn’t accepted because the color of his skin. Sounds ridiculous to even write that.

Although we’ve all come so far, there is still more work to do. Racist are not born, they are taught. It’s an infectious disease that spreads because of the rhetoric gospel taught by ignorance. Wake up it’s 2015.

Below is a checklist of some key appearances by the Black Panther. As always, there will be books that are not listed. Please help the collectors by writing your entry below in the comment section if you want to contribute.

Fantastic Four #52 (1966) First appearance. Written by Stan Lee, Pencils by Jack ‘King’ Kirby, cover by Kirby and Joe Sinnott. Also, this issue is the first time we ever know of the land Wakanda in Africa. This is also the character Bast’s first appearance.

Not saying they didn’t use CGI a lot in their other films, but we’re talking the mystics here! Yes Awesomeness will ensue, be prepared.

Dr. Strange will be a huge hit. Some of his key back issues have already exploded and we’re here to make sure you’re on point to join the frenzy.

Also the first appearance of Clea which is also a good speculative thought to appear in the film.

A lot of number one issues coming out this week. Here are some of the DC books first;

Batman Beyond #1, this will be volume 5 number one. You know what that means? Five different times collectors have seen a number one issue pop up from Batman Beyond. That’s a lot. It kind of waters down the “premiere #1” issue deal a bit. That said, it doesn’t stop the high priced 1999 issue.  Anyways, Batman Beyond’s first appearance was in Batman Beyond #1 (1999). Bizarro #1, here’s an all ages book. Good to see DC is trying to get the little guys/gals back into comic books. Bizarro first appears in Superboy #68 (1958). And very funny variant here by Kyle Baker. Another all ages comic from DC; Bat-Mite #1. Count this reader in! And speculators, for you; Detective Comics #267 (1959). That’s the first appearance of Bat-Mite. One more thing, the variant is sold out. Midnighter #1 What will come of this series exactly? Who knows, looks cool though. Midnighter first appeared in Stormwatch #4 (1997).Written by Warren Ellis. Back in the 80’s the Omega Men team was awesome. Can they revisit that awesomeness with Omega Men #1? We will find out. Their first appearance is in Green Lantern #141 (1981). George Perez cover. Fantastic first appearance to have in your collection. Here is a rundown of some of the Marvel number one titles coming out on Wednesday.

With the new Marvel Universe on the horizon, we get more number one issues than we can handle. Or maybe we can handle them. Most would opt to just chill hitting the restart button, but we have Marvel and DC really shaking things up lately. All that said, Peter Parker will feel the wrath of the Secret Wars too. No one is safe. A safe bet is however, if there is a Spider-Man number one issue coming out, there will be a bazillion variant covers. That is so for the Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 comic coming out this Wednesday. Marvel isn’t shy about these variant covers. Ten at last count. Probably more than that as you read this article. The standouts as far as variants go are; Pasqual Ferry, Adi Granov, and J. Scott Campbell. Yes they are all nice, but these are our favorites. Too many variants that will sell for an absorbent amount of monies and then taper off. It’s the same formula here. So what about the actual comic? The only thing that makes this or any crazy amount of variants worth chasing is if there is a major introduction (their daughter?) within the pages, otherwise what you have here is a bunch of hyperbole with no substance to sustain the pricing during the immediate aftermarket wave. So what about this daughter Peter and Mary have? Is this a new take on their lives? Certainly looks that way. Having a child in any relationship changes things a whole lot! Maybe that will be the sticking point on keeping this comic relevant 10 years from now. And from the looks of it, the daughter may possess some of daddy’s DNA down a few issues later. Are we surprised here really though? Lets see where Dan Slott and Adam Kubert bring us.
