Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Daredevil #150 (1978) CBCS 9.0. This nicely graded book features the first appearance of the villain Paladin. It’s signed by artist Klaus Janson. It also has a Gil Kane/Frank Giacoia cover. All of this for $65!

One of Spider-Man’s greatest adversaries gets another number one issue this Wednesday. Venom #1 debuts with writer Mike Costa and artist Gerardo Sandoval at the helm. Have you seen the InvestComics giveaway contest? You could win the exclusive Venom #1 Greg Horn WonderWorld Comics variant. Click HERE and follow the easy instructions to enter. Good luck. Back to talking about the release of the new comic. Well, let’s talk about Venom appearances for a minute. We all know of his “cameo” in Amazing Spider-Man #299 (1988) and his first full appearance is in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988). Those comics can be costly in the aftermarket, so why not shop for Venom’s “second” full appearance (third overall) in Amazing Spider-Man #315 (1989)? Some may overcharge for this comic, but still worth a hunt for a great copy at an affordable price. Most collectors won’t budge so much on #299 or #300, but #315 is more flexible for most. Here’s a crazy Venom comic that a collector can snag on Ebay for about one dollar. Quasar #6 (1989). It’s the first Venom appearance anywhere outside the Spider-Man universe (comic).
One more thing. The Venom #1 Todd McFarlane variant has an asking price of $150 right now on Ebay. The McFarlane Venom variant cover is the actual first appearance Todd drew of Venom in the Amazing Spider-Man #299 issue (last page) back in 1988. Nothing new here, just Marvel showing off Todd’s greatness.

Dani Moonstar returns in All New X-Men Annual #1. She last appeared in 2014’s All-New X-Factor #8 and Amazing X-Men #6. They both came out in the same month, we’re not too sure which came out first or if they came out the same week. No matter really, it’s irrelevant, she’s back now. However, of possible relevance is her first appearance in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 New Mutants (1982).
Ultimates Squared #1 is a new team title from Marvel. Ultimates Squared are the heralds of Galactus and they’re called the Lifebringer. This is not the first appearance of this team formed by Galactus. Lifebringer first appeared in Ultimates #2 (2016).

The smartest person in the Marvel universe is Lunella Lafayette. A fourth grader. Marvel is out to prove their case as the latest story line begins in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #13. The Amy Reeder cover keeps us guessing, what is connected to what? Creative cover.
Civil War II #7 will be the final issue. Great Marko Djurdjevic cover (regular) of Captain Marvel laying the smackdown.
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 will feature the first written comic book work by comedian/talk show host/game show host Wayne Brady.

A couple of DC mentions……..this does not mean there aren’t any more superb DC comics coming out, just two that made it here that’s all. So we’re good right?
Deathstoke runs into the Man of Steel in Deathstroke #7. A homage Superman cover from Shane Davis.
…..And that Jenny Frison Wonder Woman #11 cover really nails a distraught looking WW. The last issue of ‘The Lies’ story line.

John Layman and Rob Guillory have an incredible run on the title Chew. This Wednesday the series comes to an end. Chew #60 will be a double size finale.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #1 – All of the variants in the aftermarket are well above market value right now. Seems Black Mask comics have struck a nerve with comic book fans once again.

Dark Souls #1 – Another indie book cracks the Top 5. This hot video game based comic is showing signs of a sell out.

Mighty Thor #6 – We think this might be the first official appearance of Viking Hulk. Read this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks #420 article to inquire more details on this.

Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #3 – Check this comic out for a slew of villains appearing in it.

New Avengers #9 – A comic that appeared in a previous Hot Picks article (last month), but made in back into an InvestComics Hot Picks article THIS week and into the Top Five list this week as well. We can do this because we don’t have to answer to anyone. The first appearance of Avenger Five, American Kaiju, and Doctor Varghese.

The super cool Avenger Five will make an appearance in New Avengers #10. Avenger Five first appeared in the previous issue New Avengers #9. That issue also had the first appearances of American Kaiju and Doctor Varghese.
We’re not a 100% on this, but we’re not finding a true first appearance on the Viking Hulk character. So we’ll say that the Mighty Thor #6 will feature the first appearance of Viking Hulk. No? Maybe? If you’re not a fanboy, please help out our fellow InvestComics fans if you know of a Viking Hulk character NAMED in another comic other than the Mighty Thor #6 coming out this week. If he’s wearing a silly viking helmet in some comic and is still called Hulk, that doesn’t count.
Regular follower’s of InvestComics know how we feel about this title. We like the concept and the feel of it. Marvel must maintain the course here. Check out Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #3 with a slew of villains appearing in it.
Speaking of Deadpool, there’s a great cover swipe regarding the secret cover to Deadpool #10. The cover swipe is from Jim Steranko’s classic Nick Fury Agent of S.h.i.e.l.d. #1 (1968).
Cap and Black Widow team up to train a new team of Avengers. This happens in Captain America Road To War #1. The Francesco Mattina variant cover is nice.
Disney Kingdoms Haunted Mansion #1 saw some sellouts when it came out. This week, the follow up, Disney Kingdoms Haunted Mansion #2.

From a New York newspaper interview, Valiant Entertainment says it will have the first appearance of Vladimir Putin in Divinity II #1. We assume “as a villain” here right? Because Putin has appeared in other comics before. All Marvel Comics appearances at that. Either way, Divinity was a hit book for Valiant the first time around, it’ll be a hit book again. Last count, 7 variant covers. Trevor Hairsine sketch cover is sold out.

Black Mask Comics brings us 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #1. Mostly every number one Black Mask Comic sells out. No difference here probably. Some of the variants are commanding bigger monies in the aftermarket already.
The new Dark Horse comic, Dept H #1 will be written and drawn by Matt Kindt. The cover from Jeff Lemire almost depicts an X-Man on the cover doesn’t it?
An Image Comic to have fun read with this week; Chew Demon Chicken Poyo #1 from writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory.

What If #35 (1982) – A few months after knocking off Elektra, Marvel immediately went to the well and made this comic. They already knew they struck a cord with comic fans and were cashing in. See they’ve been doing this for years! Frank Miller writes and pencils this alternate universe story. Oh and legend Steve Ditko pencils the first appearance of the Cat People in another story. No really, we’re not making that up.

Daredevil #197 (1983) – Yuriko (later becomes Lady Deathstryke) makes her first appearance. Bullseye appearance.

Daredevil #200 (1983) – A classic John Byrne/Terry Austin cover.

Alpha Flight #34 (1986) – Bullseye finally steps away from the Daredevil comic. His first appearance outside a DD comic is in this Alpha Flight comic. Alpha Flight? Odd. He’s not on the cover though.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks

Allow me to reminisce a bit; I need to inform everyone on something very spectacular and drive home a point, if there is one…….

There comes a certain time within a startup business that one can be very proud of their personal achievements. Although there have been several for InvestComics (my fourth child), the ones that stick out are the ones I will cherish and tell myself “Hey you CAN truly make this happen”. Meeting and interviewing the mecca of all comic book legends; Stan Lee, twice! That’s one. Having Mr. Lee utter the words of “InvestComics” on video, forever captured, encapsulated in time, that’s two. Meeting and interviewing my late father’s artist hero (which he never met); Bill Sienkiewicz, that’s three. Starting the InvestComics Publishing Company, that’s number four. Watching the traffic numbers climb to a number you’ve envisioned, and then exceeding it each and every year, that’s five. If I continue I will run out of Microsoft paper, but you get the idea here.

Yesterday one of those pinnacle moments happened again. InvestComics was accepted to write articles for Yahoo!. It’s one of those moments like the aforementioned you pinch yourself and say “wow” this is kinda awesome. I will post on Facebook and the InvestComics website the links to check out. They will be Exclusive articles on Yahoo! From InvestComics. These articles will ONLY appear on Yahoo! and no place else. So be sure to click on the links when they are provided so you can bask in the glory with me. Also, I ask to please share them. The articles are very simple now, but will be enhanced; as did everything else with InvestComics when first started. Here are two links to the very first articles on Yahoo!. InvestComics Top 10 – New Comic Releases and Back Issues for 10/30/13 and InvestComics Top Ten – New Comic Releases and Back Issues for 11/6/13. As stated, these articles will be more in-depth with the next releases. Baby steps…

Thanks to you……the fans…. for making this happen. Thank you for all of your support, none of this is possible without you.

Christmas is officially 24 days away. The InvestComics/Ratchet City Comics giveaway is still on, but we need to get to 3000 LIKES on Facebook in order to award the prize! The winner will receive a CGC Signature Series graded 9.8 Star Wars #1 (2013) Dark Horse comic signed by Brian Wood! Click HERE and SHARE the InvestComics Facebook page everywhere! InvestComics Hot Picks – New Comic Releases 12/4/13

Just like last week’s InvestComics Hot Picks, not much in the back issue department to check out, but plenty of new issues to check out.

[scrollGallery id=322]

We start the week off with some first appearances that you may want to check out. Avengers (2012 5th Series) Annual #2013 will introduce Zamira. It’s always nice to make sure as a collector to pick up a first appearance in an Avengers book. Knowing full well that annuals don’t usually account to much, but the way things are rolling these days, you never know. So basically, I don’t care that it’s in an annual. Especially that it’s in an Avengers title. The speculator needs to get this comic. The Arrow series on CW is doing quite well for itself these days. The Green Arrow comic is faring okay though. With the release of Green Arrow (2011 4th Series) #26 this week, look for the introduction of some new villains in these pages. In the bizarre first appearance world of comics this week we have Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe (2013) #3. Check out Hulkvengers, Cosmic Carnage, Wolverine King of Vampires among others. Silly, yet once again you never know!

Batman Superman (2013 DC) #6 has our heroes dealing with Mongul. This big ol’ Thanos/Darkseid wannabe first appeared in DC Comics Presents #27 (1980). Check out that Jim Starlin Cover too! Oh of course Jim Starlin is involved with this cosmic character, hello?!

Having a name like Man-Bat is the equivalent of having the name She-Bat, right?? Well anyways, this week in Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #26, John Layman brings the She-Bat to the forefront. Here’s a quick trivia question, you must know the answer in 4 seconds flat. Ready? Where is the first appearance of She-Bat…..1,2,3,4 BZZZZ! Time’s up! The first appearance is in Detective Comics #407 (1971) by legend Neal Adams. Now that’s at least a reason to own the book, right?!

If you’re a fan of any Spidey comic these days you will realize that anything is possible with the way a storyline can twist and turn. There may be a similar path this week with Superior Spider-Man (2012) #23. Marvel promises to have the most “cringe-worthy moment is Spider-Man history” happen in this comic. What is worth a statement like that? Well you’ll have to buy the comic to find out. “….In history”, that’s very mighty of them to say isn’t it? Superior Spider-Man #23 is a definite pick-up this week.

Amazing X-Men (2013) #2 features a fan fav Dale Keown variant that’s sold out at Diamond. Possibly a nice CGC Signature Series opportunity here. It’s a $40 variant, so score a 9.8 or higher.

Inhumanity (2013) #1 variant by Nick Bradshaw is sold out. Inhumans will be a hot commodity for a bit, so be on top of them. Check out last week’s InvestComics Hot Picks #296 for more on the Inhumans.

The popular on-line video game Hawken will get its own comic book this week from Archaia Studios Press; Hawken Melee (2013) #1. It’s almost sold out at the distributor, so be sure to check in on it.

Want to follow the story of three dogs surviving the extinction of the human race in Rover Red Charlie (2013) #1? Sounds a bit over the top right? With proven talent like writer Garth Ennis on this book, one cannot help but see what this is all about.

The latest installment of the Terminator hits this week; Terminator Salvation Final Battle (2013) #1 and the Pete Woods Variant is sold out.

Another zombie book finds its way to the new release shelf this week; Deadworld Restoration (2013) #1. The zombie genre is going to die soon (no pun intended) with too many storylines focusing on dead people that walk around. See last week’s Hot Picks #296 for more on the zombie genre.

What’s not dead on arrival is the new red hot Noir comic from Dynamite Entertainment. Noir (2013 Dynamite) #2 is sold out at the distributor. Look for second prints to follow shortly.

A new creative team will be taking over on Valiant’s Shadowman (2012 4th Series) #13. Be sure to check that out.

There is a “thing” Dynamite Entertainment is doing that is kind of perplexing (not really, they’re making extra cash with these “rare comics”), but maybe cool for the collector/speculator? It’s a question because there is no reasoning behind why they continue to do this to certain comics (other than the cashflow) and they are extremely limited, but we’ll point out a few of them this week. Red Sonja Unchained #4 Cover D High-End Mel Rubi Blood Red Ultra-Limited Cover. There are only 25 of these in existence. The “number” in existence is the running theme here, so check out what applies here for these comics; Dejah Thoris And The Green Men Of Mars #5 Cover G High-End Jay Anacleto Risque Color Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), Lords Of Mars #5 Cover D High-End Mel Rubi Risque Red Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), Black Bat (2013 Dynamite) #7 Cover D High-End Ardian Syaf Black & White Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), and Shadow Green Hornet Dark Nights #2 Cover E High-End Alex Ross Sketch Art Ultra-Limited Cover (25 Copies). I do suppose that if you want to spend a $100 on any of these comics you can, but how exactly do you make your money back on these “investments”? (If you want to call it an investment). Graded CGC Signature Series? How would one sell something that isn’t really in much demand? Getting an Alex Ross sig series on the Shadow Green Hornet Dark Nights #2 is a good start.

Sticking with the Dynamite Comics here, be sure to check out Legends of Red Sonja (2013 Dynamite) #2 with the Frank Thorne exclusive cover. It’s a much cheaper route than the above mentioned. A $3.99 comic limited to comic subscribers at their local comic shops and an initial limited print run. All that for $3.99, not bad.

And finally, from Archie Comics Archie #650 Cover B Variant Fiona Staples World Tour Cover. This awesome variant comes from the red hot series artistry of Saga; Fiona Staples. A $3.99 easy, no brainer pick-up.

Invest wisely,

Jay Katz

CHEW #30 GETS DEVOURED

Issue sold out, to be reprinted in January collection

CHEW #30, which closes out the “Space Cakes” story arc, sold out at the distributor level on the same day of its release, November 28. Fans of the series, by John Layman and Rob Guillory, should rush to their local comic book stores to pick up issue #30, which will be reprinted only in CHEW VOLUME SIX: SPACE CAKES, the trade paperback out on December 19, and volume three of the CHEW: THE OMNIVORE EDITION, out in March.

CHEW #30 is a milestone issue, the halfway point in a planned 60-issue run of the popular dramedy about a family with a very special relationship with food. (It is in development as a television series with Showtime.) Comic Book Resources, noting the series’ layered storytelling, says of the issue in a four-star review: “You’ll read it once for the roller coaster ride, and then immediately read it a second time in a different light, knowing the impact the issue’s outcome places on the earlier events.”

The second half of the series begins with CHEW #31 — and a funeral. It will be in stores on January 23. Readers should get their pre-orders in now to be sure they get a copy of what is sure to be another fast-selling issue.

CHEW is also available digitally on comiXology, Graphic.ly, and ComicsPlus.

DETECTIVE COMICS, in LAYMAN’S TERMS

DC announced that CHEW creator, John Layman, will be writing DETECTIVE COMICS as of #13. Joining Layman, on art duties, is fan fave Jason Fabok.

Here’s the scoop from DC’s blog:

This fall, John Layman (CHEW) will be writing DETECTIVE COMICS. And joining him to tell his twisted stories about the Dark Knight will be fan-favorite artist Jason Fabok. So what’s in store for DC Comics’ flagship title? We asked the duo to shed some light on what fans can expect from their collaboration.

“Obviously, this is a happily surreal and exciting turn-of-events for my career,” Layman told THE SOURCE. “Not only is this my first work within the DC Universe, but I get to work on one of DC’s undisputedly coolest and highest-profile characters. I’m going to take a look at the role of criminal organizations within Gotham City, hopefully from a perspective that does not get considered very often (if at all). From the symbiotic relationship a master criminal must have with Gotham in order to survive, to the lowly, often faceless criminal underling hoping to rise up the ranks. All that, plus Batman’s gonna play with a bunch of crazy new toys and kick all kinds of butt.”

“First, I want to express how thankful I am to have this opportunity. I am humbled that DC Comics would entrust me with one of their greatest titles,” continued Fabok. “To work on a Batman title has been the number one goal that I set for my career and I am honored to have this opportunity to make my dream become a reality. I’m really hoping to deliver a dark, epic Batman with hints of the art deco stylings of the old animated series and the more modern take seen in recent incarnations. I am hoping to let my influences gush out onto the page and create something that is familiar, classic and yet my own. As for working with John Layman, I couldn’t be more excited. John is a great visual storyteller and he packs every page with meaningful panels that bring the story forward and add incredible depth. Together we hope to deliver a quality Batman tale, filled with mystery, twists, turns, shockers and most of all, fun!”

DETECTIVE COMICS #13 flies into stores on October 3rd. Below, take an exclusive first look at Fabok’s cover for the issue.

Pick of The Week 2-22-12

Here’s a new article that will be appearing here on a regular basis from Shaun Sorenson. This article will consist of ONE book that Shaun picks from his pile and tells you all why it’s his “Pick of The Week!” Enjoy!

-JK

For my first pick of the week I had a real tough choice. In a week where I read 14 comics, a lot for me, I narrowed it down to three books that I thought stood out more than any other. Wolverine and X-men #6, Aquaman #6, and Chew #24. After about ten minutes and flipping through each book a couple times I decided my first ever pick of the week would be Chew #24.

I have been reading Chew since the first issue came out a little over two years ago and have loved every single issue of it. Chew is one of those books that month after month constantly hits the mark. From the very first issue I embraced the universe that John Layman and Rob Guillory had created and have loved every moment of it. The story telling that Layman writes along with the unique art style of Guillory makes for one of the most original comic books out there. Chew is about a man Tony Chu who is Cibopath, a person who can take a bite from any food, person, animal, and so on, and tell what happened to the object.

Chew #24 focuses solely on Tony Chu’s daughter, Olive, who is introduced earlier in the series, but until this issue her life had remained much of mystery.  Olive goes on a mission with Tony’s former partner Mason Savoy and current partner D-Bear to help capture Hershel Brown. Brown is a Xocoscalpere (a man who sculpt anything out of chocolate that can exactly mimic the real version of it). The creativity of Layman to come up with this idea was one of the more amazing ideas that have come out of this series.

This issue really out did itself once again. The story was the first I can remember without it focusing on Tony and while at first I was a little hesitant about not having Tony being the main focal point, after about the first three pages I didn’t care anymore. I found myself just so enthralled in this comic that I forgot about Tony until they showed a panel about what was happening with him in this story arc. Everything that happens with Olive makes you only want more from her character.

The art by Guillory is great as always. One of the great things about Guillory’s art is all the things he puts in the background of the panels. I really don’t know which I laughed at more, the butter sculpture of Butters from South Park or the Robert Kirkman posters in Olive’s bedroom. Guillory’s art catches your eye in this issue just like every other where you just can’t help but look at every panel to try and find every Easter egg he might throw in there.

All of these elements combined for my first ever pick of the week! I’m open to any and all suggestions you guys have to help me along with my new articles. So help me get acclimated and please leave comments/suggestions below.

Thanks InvestComics readers.

Shaun Sorenson

MARS ATTACKS ONGOING SERIES!

EISNER-WINNING CREATORS TAPPED FOR MARS ATTACKS ONGOING SERIES

John Layman, John McCrea to reimagine cult sci-fi classic in June

[Mars Attacks Cover]San Diego, CA (January 23, 2012)— IDW Publishing and Topps are pleased to announce the multiple Eisner Award-winning creative team for MARS ATTACKS, an all-new ongoing comic series based on the fan-favorite Mars Attacks franchise.

Debuting in June 2012, IDW’s comic series will offer the first stories of an all-new Mars Attacks universe, bringing the brand’s outrageous action and dark humor to a new set of tales. Writer John Layman, author and co-creator of the Eisner-winning series Chew, will pen the series, with art by John McCrea, best known for his collaborations with Garth Ennis, including Eisner-winner Hitman.

“I’m a huge fan of Mars Attacks from a long way back. I own about half the original card set from 1962 and have a pretty big collection of collectables and doodads,” Layman said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to destroy the Earth and inflict huge degrees of suffering on the rest of humanity. With this Mars Attacks series, I finally get my chance.”

Created in 1962, Mars Attacks celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012 with major product launches throughout the year. IDW’s new comic series, as well as high-quality reprints of existing material, will be a cornerstone of that effort.

Originally published by Topps as a series of trading cards, Mars Attacks was created by Len Brown and Woody Gelman, after Brown was inspired by the Wally Wood cover to Weird Science #16 (EC Comics). The cards went on to achieve cult status for their then-shocking imagery—fully painted by pulp legend Norm Saunders and based on designs by Wood and Bob Powell—and remains a staple of pop culture. Topps revived the franchise in the mid 1990s with a second card set, comic book series and toy line. The story was also adapted into the 1996 feature film Mars Attacks!, directed by Tim Burton.

“We were excited to hear of the award-winning creative team that IDW had secured,” said Ira Friedman, Topps vice president of global licensing. “John McCrea was our first choice to illustrate Mars Attacks and we were thrilled that IDW was able to bring him aboard. His experience drawing over-the-top violence on comics like Hitman, Judge Dredd and The Boys, coupled with John Layman’s penchant for twisted, offbeat humor makes them the perfect team to relaunch Mars Attacks.”

MARS ATTACKS will include covers by McCrea and alternate covers by such comic-book luminaries as Sam Kieth, Ben Templesmith and Eric Powell. The first issue will also feature a unique approach to variant covers: It will ship with 55 different covers, each depicting one of the original trading cards from the debut set of Mars Attacks from 1962. A complete collector’s set of the 55 covers in a box that replicates the original card packaging will be offered separately as well.

MARS ATTACKS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in June 2012.

Hot picks 3-10-10

amsm624.gif

batmanrobin10.gifwolverine159.gifwolverinemisterx.gifA very cold winter here in Florida and a breezy week as far as Hot Picks go, but we forge ahead and find “some stuff” in this week’s cold front . As previously mentioned just a little while ago on InvestComics™ the week that was Peter Parker will be getting fired in Amazing Spider-Man #’s623/624. Look for this comic to garner a little bit of attention. Marvel knows how to tell a story and have it relate to the times we are currently living in. DC’s new Batman & Robin #10 has a blurb on the cover that says “The Return of Bruce Wayne Begins Here!” That with the sick Frank Quitely cover has enough to grab my attention! Wolverine: Mr. X will be a fun knock em’ down drag them out type fight comic. If you want to find Mr. X’s first appearance look for Wolverine #159 in the $1 bin at your LCS. ultimatecomicsspm8.gifUltimate Comics Spider-Man #8 will be introducing a NEW hero into the Ultimate universe. Let’s see…New hero (check), Spider-Man comic (check), Brian Bendis attached to this book (check), Sold out on Thursday (check), Hot Pick of the week status (check).

Here are some more Hot Picks coming out this Wednesday……
