Marvel will ‘relaunch’ their Inhumans brand. Not a serious revamp or anything like that, just a way to get them back into the mix….again. Check out Inhumans Prime #1 and see where their headed. Written by Al Ewing with art by Ryan Sook.  Oh yes, the X-Men are going through the same process this week. in X-Men Prime #1. Written by Marc Guggenheim and pencils by Ken Lashley.
Remember the old oversize Marvel Treasury Edition comics back in the 70’s? Those were the best comics ever. Literally larger than life. A comic bigger than your entire head. You were able to wrap the comic around your torso if you wanted. Boy, those were fun times. We’re showing our age, but now your kids (if you have any) can experience the amazingly large panels/larger than life Marvel Treasury Edition this Wednesday; Guardians of the Galaxy All-New Marvel Treasury Edition. Collecting a bunch of Guardians stories and a new Sara Pichelli cover. Buy this, get nostalgic, share the magic with your children.
While Marvel Man-Thing fans will get their fill with the latest issue, Man-Thing #2 will feature another original R.L. Stine secondary story. That is the keepsake with these new Man-Thing comics. Unfortunately, Man-Thing will not sustain his new life offered from Marvel (unless this is a limited series, which we are not aware of), so enjoy his time here now and really enjoy the new (non-Man-Thing) stories as well.

Lobo finds his way back and into Harley’s Little Black Book #6. Comic book power couple Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner at the helm here with artist Simon Bisley.

Deathstroke

InvestComics Deathstroke Checklist – Click The Image

That’s a whole lot of new storylines beginning right? Putting aside all of the part one stories coming from DC this week, a new number one issue, Justice League Of America Rebirth #1 debuts. Steve Orlando writes, Ivan Reis draws. A crazy Justice League team this time around. Lobo, Black Canary, Atom, Killer Frost, The Ray, and of course Batman. That’s an odd bunch right?

A nice touch with the Star Wars Doctor Aphra #4 40th anniversary variant cover. Artist Pepe Larraz offers Star Wars fans a still from the very first Star Wars movie from 1977 of the Leia hologram scene.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #17 makes it to the InvestComics Hot Picks list. We’ve always thought the character is a bit overrated due to too much speculation around a possible appearance either on television or film. Of course this news (from a while ago) has not really come to fruition (yet?), but because of many collectors are holding into this news, her first appearance has not really come down to correct levels. That all said, always a vague solicit for this comic each month. A “cool way” to stay hip we guess. Maybe a new adversary debuts in this issue, but we do know that Erica Henderson’s cover pays homage to Superman #1 (1939). Remember to click these red links or comic covers to buy/bid on the comics (all available Ebay sellers) we tell you about!
Kingpin will get his own ongoing series this Wednesday; Kingpin #1. Writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Ben Torres deliver this debut issue. We all know Kingpin’s first appearance is in Amazing Spider-Man #50 (1967), but he first appeared in a Daredevil comic in Daredevil #170 (1981). Writer/artist Frank Miller forever changed the Kingpin character from that point on.

Expect one every week, it’s fun to give these artist the credit they deserve for these amazing covers they put together.

Black Science #28 (Image Comics) debuts a new hero.

Here are a few possible first appearances to look for this Wednesday. Lobo Vol 3 #9, the first appearance of Wyvern Cross? Not too sure. We found Alex Wyvern. DC fans, help us out, same dude or not? As a regular reader on the InvestComics website, you should know by now that we tell you every month to buy up the Star Wars comics. Not only are you buying good stories, but you’re getting a potential aftermarket bump speculative comic each and every time. The Star Wars craze is still five months away, but the new Marvel comics are reacting now. Any sign of a new character or major plot line and the market instantly reacts. Darth Vader #8 this Wednesday will be a book to buy. An introduction? Maybe. If not, you have great reading on your hands anyway. Worth the $4.99. It’s a win-win. Check out Guardians Of Knowhere #2, new character Yotat graces the cover. And finally, Detective Comics #43. First off, what a fantastic cover from Francis Manapul. And check out a new weapon in this comic to take down Bats and his team.

The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows story line is firing on all cylinders. Spider-Man seems to always have a hit story line these days right? Well this week Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #3 will hit and the Comicxposure variant is a biggie. Look at that cover by Mike Deodato Jr. Awesome right? Maybe InvestComics will give one of these away! Stay tuned! In the meantime click the link and head on over to Comicxposure. Buy the variant before they are all gone.

Before moving on here. A reminder as we have mentioned so many times in the past here on InvestComics. Just because a comic is sold out does not mean there will be monetary gains to be had. At the end of the day, the sold out comic must bring something tangible to the table. Besides the obvious first appearance factor for a speculative book, It must bring a buzz/interest for fans to come back to buy more. Publishers have the responsibility to provide an on time comic to sustain that interest and buzz. If the comic comes out on time and the buzz sustains and the interest is there, it’s a mix for possible success within the aftermarket. A sold out comic does not mean aftermarket success. Many factors go into why a comic does well for speculators after its release. Know the guidelines, follow InvestComics to give you the scoops all the time on how to watch for these things. Another reason is the release count. This plays a huge part in the process as well. Too many copies make for a watered down product, thus affecting your bottom line. See, many factors. Stick around here as you do, you’ll learn the real factors as to why things do what they do in the market. We are the number one comic book speculation website for a reason. And thanks to all of you of course. So let’s move along shall we?

Marvel’s newest title will be hitting this Wednesday; A-Force #1. A much hyped all female Avengers team. With all of the female strong characters of late, this only seems fitting right? Here’s the thing, and this happens way too often. Whenever the big two (Marvel or DC) hit on something (characters/team) that works for them (monetarily), they go ahead and shove it down our throats. Deadpool, Lobo, Wolverine, Spider-Gwen, Ghost Rider, etc. It happens all the time. Appearances aplenty and number one issues as well. The  A-Force team will be shoved in our faces as “must like” material. Here’s newsflash, this A-Force love-fest is not going to last very long. Not being a negative Nancy, just a realist and a speculator. We hope to get proven wrong, but history is doomed to repeat itself here. Quickly, name one mega successful all female comic book team book. You can’t. You can probably rattle off a dozen female characters that are simply red hot right now though and have held their own for years and years. That’s where this all works. Just like some of their counterparts, they are fantastic solo acts or team players. An all female team is not what the fandom really wants. Yes some female comic character are out selling their counterparts easily and we get that the push to lure the girl into the hobby is possibly working, but it’s not going to work with A-Force. Again, prove us wrong, would love that. We want to see success here.
With all this said, the great part about A-Force #1 is we’re probably going to get an endearing story. An all female Avengers heroes team kicking butt should be a fun read. We also know we’re getting a ridiculous amount of variants too. The Adam Hughes variant is sold out.
So get this book because you like to read comics. You probably will not be able to speculate this book and make some serious cash on it. Maybe, possibly an immediate impact, but longer term? Simply don’t see it. Last time here, prove us wrong and sustain some readership/market value. Please. That Adam Hughes variant is nice though isn’t it?! Enjoy the great read.

More Secret Wars awesomeness with the release of Secret Wars Battleworld #2. Witness all of the knock em down drag them out fights in this comic. M.O.D.O.K. Evilness reaches new heights here. M.O.D.O.K.’s First appearance is in Tales of Suspense #94 (1967). Such a goofy looking character, and it’s brought to you by Stan Lee, Jack ‘King’ Kirby and Joe Sinnott. Wow now that’s some firepower. For many years fans have clamored the presence of M.O.D.O.K. On the big screen and it just doesn’t seem feasible without looking completely goofy. Maybe, somehow Marvel figures it out, but seeing a huge head like that flying around would be a “jump the shark” type deal and not a productive one. More like a Dark Crystal or a muppet type feel, thus not taken seriously. Marvel Studios is probably aware of the possible vibe and this is why we’ll probably never see this character on screen.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

The Marvel Ultimate universe is ending. What a ride is has been! Witness this tragic event in Ultimate End #1. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Mark Bagley. This is the same exact creative team that ushered in the Marvel Ultimate Universe 15 years ago with the first Ultimate comic ever; Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000). Ultimate End #1 will be a story for the ages. No more Ultimate Universe. And we don’t really see it coming back from Marvel either. This won’t be a “take-back” from Marvel. We don’t see Marvel going back to the well anytime soon re-releasing Ultimate books or the universe. Marvel is merging the two universe’s in the Secret Wars/Battleworld story, so essentially they really don’t have a need to revisit the Ultimate universe later on down the line. Of course it can still happen because if Marvel wants it they’ll do it, but bringing back the Ultimate universe (ever) after the dust settles on this storyline would be a tremendous disappointment.

Planet Hulk #1 will be full of awesome this Wednesday. Regular readers here at InvestComics know that Planet Hulk and World War Hulk have been promoted here as enormous buys because of the movie speculation we were first on. No one else was informing speculators to buy The Incredible Hulk #92 (2006) back a few years ago, the first Planet Hulk. Also What If Planet Hulk #1 (2007). We still recommend these comic. Buy them. A surprise creative team backup story accompanies Planet Hulk #1, we look forward to the surprise!

Remember InvestComics informing everyone to buy anything Spider-Verse , and that first Spider-Gwen was in there which paid for all of your new comics and then some for a few months? Yeah, so now Spider-Verse is back; Spider-Verse #1 and this just means that there will be another chance for one of those first appearances or re-introductions to do well in the aftermarket. Stay close here with your ear to the ground. That all said, the Robert Rodriguez Spider-Gwen variant is sold out already. InvestComics informs speculators and readers almost every week, they need to get on top of any new Star Wars comics if they want to be in the know and the possible aftermarket frenzy. At any time a new hero or villain can show up. This will cause a huge aftermarket boost. Get in and get out. If you want, hold onto at least one of your $4.99 comics if you want to possibly wait and see if the market will explode after the movie in December. Buy new Star Wars comics. All of them……and the new Star Wars #5 this week.

Master of Kung Fu #1.….maybe Marvel really wants this work because of the Iron Fist Netflix on the horizon. Create that whole Karate/Kung Fu vibe. Bring back the Kung Fu lure, make it happening again. Get the first Master of Kung Fu in Special Marvel Edition #15 (1973) just in case we have a resurgence. Pencils and cover by Jim Starlin too. Nice.

A bunch of number one comics to definitely check out this week;

Insufferable #1 from IDW, written by Mark Waid, art by Peter Krause. A new team book and it looks awesome. Boom Studios; Oh Killstrike #1. Interesting premise here. An escaped comic book character needs to be put back into a comic book. And the Kris Anka variant cover is sold out. Aspen Comics makes an appearance this week here with Psycho Bonkers #1.What a great title! Love it. And what a great looking read too. A five issue mini-series. Adventures of Aero Girl #1 from Action Lab Entertainment also looks like an interesting/fun read. The first Accelerators series did well for Blue Juice comics, so now we have a follow up with Accelerators Momentum #1. Valhalla Mad #1 from Image Comics. Written by Joe Casey. A sellout for sure. A whacked out take on mythology. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1, written by Mr. IDW himself Chris Ryall. Dark Horse; Resident Alien Sam Hain Mystery #1. A good looking story here. Chuck Dixon’s Winterworld Frozen Fleet #1 from IDW will be a good book to sit back and read.

Deadpools Secret Secret Wars #1. A wacky tale here written by Cullen Bunn. Great Tony Harris regular cover too. And also a solid homage grave variant as well. Sold out comics here most likely.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 10/1/14

Fourteen number one issues crack the InvestComics Hot Picks list this week. Some are great reads to pick up, some are good speculation material, and some (two) leave us scratching our heads a bit.

The speculator better be on to a few books this week. Cutter (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at Diamond. This interesting story will turn a few heads and probably command a few extra bucks in the aftermarket. Critical Hit (2014 Black Mask) #1 Midtown Comics variant it sold out. Look for the regular cover to follow suit very quick. Li’l Depressed Boy Supposed To Be There Too (2014 Image) #1 will be hitting the presses again for a second printing. It’s already sold out at the distributor. Lil Depressed Boy first appearance is in United Front #1 (2001 – Cartoon Militia). None available on Ebay….which could mean there are no people selling it, or that it’s a hard book to get.

[scrollGallery id=374]

Bucky Barnes Winter Soldier (2014) #1 will be sold out before you know it. It’s accompanied by a slew of variants that don’t exceed the $15 mark. Not bad if you’re in the market for a nice inexpensive variant to possibly flip. The only way you make anything on the variant(s) here is to score a 9.8 signature grade from CBCS. Winter Soldiers first appearance is Captain America #6 (Vol. 5) and happens to be a very solid book to own these days.

Speaking on topic about the Captain, a new Captain America will emerge in Captain America (2012 7th Series) #25. This is another comic that has many options as far as the variants are concerned. The same applies here as does the Winter Soldier comic coming out this week. Get a 9.8 and signature, you’d be able to flip it for a decent profit. Not much, but something.

The old Guardians of the Galaxy, the original team from 1969 gets some love this week; Guardians 3000 (2014) #1 will have the entire cast of yesteryear. As you well know Marvel Super-Heroes #18 features the first appearance of the first GOTG team. And boy do they look good in the upcoming title.

Grayson (2014 DC) #3 will introduce a KEY player into the DC Universe. Silver Surfer (2014 5th Series) #6 will introduce a new villain. Spider-Man 2099 (2014) #4 Deadpool variant is sold out.

Here are some others to check out this week. Gotham Academy (2014 DC) #1, Men of Wrath (2014) #1 from Marvel looks quite intriguing, a rare Dynamite Entertainment comic works its way in this week; Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini (2014 Dynamite) #1, Fearless Dawn Eye of the Beholder (2014) #1, Brides of Helheim (2014) #1, Last Born (2014 Black Mask) #1, and Green Lantern New Gods Godhead (2014) #1, which reminds me of a Thanos deal for some reason, but with Darkseid instead.

Two comic new releases will have comic fans scratching their heads this Wednesday. Granted we did with the news of it, now reality is about to hit and it has us saying “huh?” again. Lobo (2014 DC) #1 will feature the look Lobo. Why did we have to change the entire complexity of this character is beyond me, but I will remain positive until we see what the new Lobo brings to the table. But that said, Omega Men #3 (1983) will always be a comic to grab if you could. The same positive nature will not carry on to the new Thor series. Thor (2014 4th Series) #1 will bring a gender change in the character. This never really works. The gender change of an iconic figure such as Thor will not work in the long run. It hasn’t before and it won’t now. Any gender change of any major character never works. You imagine if we had the male version of Black Canary? Or Wonder Woman? Or Dagger? It just wouldn’t work. It never does. Here’s a huge reason that I think even Marvel KNOWS it’s silly to have Thor as a female lead. Out of the bazillion useless Thor #1 variants that will release on Wednesday, one will be a $300 Alex Ross variant. Every variant is a “Thor #1” variant, but Alex Ross’ has the 75th Anniversary incentive cover that shows no female gender Thor on the cover! Granted it’s a “75th Anniversary” variant, but it’s still HER book now. Whoever “HER” is though. Stay away from the variants if you like your money.

That’s it for this week. Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

Jay Katz

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 2/5/14

30474_20120422194521_largeIt’s Superbowl Sunday 2014. The NFL’s first appearance in a big market company came in 1991’s NFL SuperPro #1 from Marvel Comics. Creators attached were Nicieza, Delbo, DeCarlo, Frenz, Sinnott, and Legend John Romita Sr. Nice line up right? And a Spidey appearance! Too bad the comic is pediatrics office material. If anything, it was a fun comic!

One particular comic really has our attention this week. No it’s definitely not Ms. Marvel #1, more on her in a bit. But the comic that has our ears peered up is Marvel Knights Spider-Man (2013) #5. Not only does this issue possess a very cool cover from Marco Rudy, but a history making comic here folks! Well that’s according to Marvel, so we’ll take this with a grain of salt. Curiosity does have the best of us here though. The issue promises “….the craziest two page spread in comic book history!” Yes, you read that right. Now Marvel must deliver. What do you think? Will they? Take it off the shelf and take a looksee.

DC will be milking the recent success of Jokers Daughter with the release of Batman Joker’s Daughter (2014) #1. The character still remains a mysterious one as does the speculation market. As DC rams the character down our throats, look for pricing across the board to level off……a lot. Simply put, too much of a good thing is never good. Holding back a bit on the Jokers Daughter would help the speculative market immensely. Giving a steady diet is what the doctor should order here, but we know that’s not going to happen. DC will beat this character to death to the point no one will care about her. A perfect example of this would be the Lobo character back in the day. Of course it’s happened countless times since then, but Lobo was so hot at one time and then just sort of faded away because of the overkill. Deadpool comes to mind too. Marvel released a new number one issue last week with “Deadpool” in the title and retailers are probably trying to figure out a way to give them away at this point. Too much of a good thing is not always good.

[scrollGallery id=333]

Case in point with Punisher (2014 10th Series) #1 and Ms. Marvel (2014 3rd Series) #1. Punisher was in that same boat at one time, appearing in every single comic imaginable. Frank Castle even teamed up with Archie at one point. Although his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974) is a steady book, it’s become a “slow” steady book. Still a good investment, but you’ll have to wait a while for any sort of real return on that comic. A good hold book these days.

You know what Carol, Sharon, Karla, Deidre, and Kamala all have in common? They were all Ms. Marvel’s at one time. Now with Marvel’s latest Ms. Marvel #1 they are doing what any normal business model would do and that’s a money grab. Nothing wrong with making money right? But when it comes at the expense of selling an ethnicity, it’s a bit disappointing. Marvel did the same exact thing with Miles, an African American Spider-Man. Marvel can spin it anyway they’d like, but they got what they wanted and that’s major press on that announcement.  The same holds for the press they received on the new Ms. Marvel. Yes she’s Muslim. She’s the first Muslim Super-Hero ever in the Marvel Universe. Why must we go down this road again exactly? Money, yes that’s right. All this being said, Captain Marvel #14 (2013), the first appearance of Kamala Khan and the Ms. Marvel #1 issue will reward nicely in the aftermarket because of the ridiculous hyperbole surrounding it. Do not, I repeat, do not think holding onto this comic will bring bigger fortunes down the road. It will not. Marvel will realize after a 12 issue run or so, with slumping sales, they’ll cancel the series and Ms. Marvel, no matter what race will go back to being that third rate character……in turn leaving you with a bunch of worthless comics.

Let me clarify one thing though. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a having an African American or Muslim super-hero. Why not just do it without the fanfare? Exploiting a superheroes ethnicity, sexuality (gay), and or any other human element for a mere profit instead of awareness is not educational but a lack of judgment of making these superheroes to be “different” and not within the fabric of society as everyday people, but outsiders. I like to think we’re better than this.

Marvel throws another Wolverine #1 (relaunch) at us. Number 5 for those keeping score at home. Wolverine (2014 5th Series) #1 will be as big a bore as it’s expected to be. He’s holding a gun on the cover. Wow. Loki brings the same sentiments here with Loki Agent Of Asgard (2014) #1. This cover is a huge bore, sorry Jenny Frison, but you’ve done much better.

In X-Men (2013) 3rd Series #10 we will see the recruitment of two female characters, Typhoid Mary and the Enchantress. Typhoid Mary’s first appearance in Daredevil #254 (1988) was a hot commodity at one time. Nowadays you can probably find this comic in the 50 cent long boxes. Still a very cool book to own if you don’t already. Journey Into Mystery #103 features the first appearance of the Enchantress. Jack “King” Kirby is all over this comic. A must own.

Captain America (2012 7th Series) #16 will focus on Jet Black once again. Her first appearance happened way way back in Captain America #1 of this series.

Superior Carnage gets his own annual this week; Superior Carnage (2013) Annual #1. Looks like a great read, check it out.

Ghost Solider will be making their presence known again in Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #28 this week. Check out the first appearance a couple of issue prior in #26.

Green Lantern (2011 4th Series) #28 will be one of those cool flip issues, with Red Lanterns #28. All that with a $2.99 price tag.

One of the best buys this week has to go out to Turok Dinosaur Hunter (2014 Dynamite) #1. Definitely get one of the higher end variants to flip. As always a CGC signature series (9.8 or higher) will fetch the most bucks. Look for a sellout on this book and a spike in the Valiant series from 1993. And no you’re not seeing double, the Dynamite cover pays homage to the Valiant series. At least we hope Dynamite relates that someplace, otherwise it’s a ripoff.

If you’re looking for a bunch of first appearances in one comic this week, check out Sonic Universe (2009) #60. And also check out the new comic from Image Comics Apocalypse Al (2014) #1. Writer J. Michael Straczynski on this one, a sure sellout, and you better get your hands on this one.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/18/13

If you were a comic book fan back in the 90’s you will remember the fun that followed the Todd McFarlane Amazing Spider-Man run. A fellow by the name of Erik Larsen took over the reins for a while and the ride was just as superb a ride as from McFarlane. So many characters introduced and one of which will be returning this week in Superior Spider-Man (2012) #24. Check out Cardiac in his first appearance by the stellar Mr. Larsen in Amazing Spider-Man #344(1990). Before Cardiac was his villainy self he was Dr. Wortham in Amazing Spider-Man #342(1989). Fun times those 80’s/90’s Spidey runs were. Fun times…….So in closing, with the recent Spider-Man 2 trailer coming out, it’s a safe bet to think we will see more Spidey coming our way. Actually it’s a sure bet, Sony pictures said so. The question remains. Who is to get the tap on the shoulder to get in there next? No one knows, but maybe, just maybe Cardiac will be answering that call. You never know!

A return appearance and an end for a Spider-Man book this week. Check out the last issue of Scarlet Spider (2012 2nd Series) #25 as many questions are answered with some surprises as well.

The new Lobo shows up in the latest Supergirl book. Check out Supergirl (2011 5th Series) #26 for that. If you are one that pines for the old Lobo, don’t forget that his first appearance is in a very affordable comic; Omega Men #3 (1983).

Batman and Robin (2011 2nd Series) #26 will give readers the retelling (new 52 style) of Two-Face’s origin. Batman’s foe first appeared in Detective Comics #66 (1942). He’s a great villain, but doesn’t deserve the cash that some dealers/sellers ask, but they’ll get it nonetheless. Staying with the Batman theme here. The successful Harley Quinn #0 leads into Harley Quinn (2013) #1 this week. Expect sellouts on this one. Harley is a popular one……for now. Do not put all of your eggs in one basket here. Harley is a cool character, but she will not sustain an uptick in the long run. That said, the Adam Hughes variant looks like a sold out book with nice profit potential there. Signature Series would be a nice way to go with this one. As always, high grade too!

Sinister Dexter (2013 IDW) #1 will make its U.S. Debut. A popular comic strip in the UK, now comes to IDW. If this comic hits right, you may want to look for 2000 A.D. #992 (1996) as the earliest first appearance found. Probably nothing to get your hopes over, so don’t go ga ga over this.

X-Men (2013) 3rd Series #8 will feature the debut on Monet. It’s always nice to catch a first appearance in an X-Men book, so be sure to check this out.

A recent fan of InvestComics reached out to thank me for some Hot Pick advise. InvestComics recommend Voice in the Dark #1 (sold out, second print already printed) as he flipped the comic for $12. This Wednesday Voice in the Dark (2013 Image) #2 will hit the shelves. What will this comic bring? The speculator always has to be careful with the second issue. The number two issue (and 3) are essentially the most vital in a series as far as the speculation market goes. Why is that? The follow-up issue to a number one issue must be met with the same interest as the first or the series will fall flat in the aftermarket. Word of mouth will get around as a YEA or Nay on this series after Wednesday. You must keep a pulse on what the fans are saying as well as the aftermarket. Being on time is another huge factor, but we’re talking about interest in storyline here right now. The story has to captivate the interest of the fan in the second issue. If it does not, the aftermarket is nil.

All New X-Men #20Locke and KeySome number one issues to check out this week; Teen Titans Go (2013) #1 will be a “go” to book this week. Look for tremendous interest here. A cool storyline hits Illegitimates (2013 IDW) #1 and check out the Bill Willingham variant on this one, another zombie book 8-bit Zombies (2013 Antarctic Press) #1, an interesting plot line in Midas Flesh (2013 Boom) #1, another Star Wars comic Star Wars Darth Vader and Cry of Shadows (2013) #1, Ghost is back Ghost (2013 Dark Horse) #1, and Lisa gets her own book Wonderful World of Lisa Simpson (2013) #1.

Also check out the awesome variant cover from Locke and Key (2013 7th Series) Alpha #2. Dave Sim pays homage to Spidey.

Rounding out this week we see the cover to All New X-Men (2012) #20. Every so often I link fans back to the InvestComics special I ran over a year ago called Romantic X-Men Images. It’s a collection of X-Men covers that depict various X-Men team members in the act of public displays of affection. Why this particular team has so many covers like this is a bit mind boggling really. So I will add the cover of All New X-Men #20 to this collection of Romantic X-Men Covers. If you missed the original article with the covers, click HERE.

Thanks again for your patience everyone. See you next week!

Invest wisely.

Last week InvestComics Hot Picks #285 covered the arrival of DC’s 3D comic cover onslaught. The 3D covers turned out to be a huge success for DC judging from the demand in the aftermarket as well as complete sell outs in every comic shop across the nation. One particular comic is commanding in the range of $199 to $300 in the aftermarket. The “winner” in last week’s 3D sweepstakes has to go to Forever Evil #1 – Ivan Reis’ retail variant. The ratio of this comic is driving the price up tremendously. How about 1 variant per comic shop? That’s a nice ratio isn’t it? Get this bad boy in a CGC graded case, a 9.8 or higher and double your cash instantly. Hurry though; the 3D madness will not last forever. Not saying that prices will plummet here, but these prices WILL level out and some speculators may get caught holding their purse. Do not overpay to get any of these books. Be a wise speculator, this isn’t the 1990’s anymore. Although it may feel that way at the moment, this will all die down and level off. That said you must look for the rare ratio 3D books in order to make some serious bank. If you are collecting all of the 3D covers, be sure to get two copies of each, although many retail outfits are limiting one per customer (even Midtown Comics in New York are limiting 1 per). So get your brother, friend, mom, dad, sister, whomever to buy a copy so that you have 2 in your stash. Why two copies you may ask? The reason is simple and any collector already knows; a nice reader/collector copy and one to put together in a mass sale of all 52 variants. What some speculators may not be aware of is some of the aftermarket prices for (pre-ordering) all 52 covers. They are fetching upwards to $390. Not too shabby. To reiterate, the 3D craze WILL NOT last forever, so if you are going to do a mass kill on selling all 52 3D books, you must do so in a small window. The market will in fact come down on these sooner than later. You will have quite a few that will break the outside mold and become a $300 book all onto itself like the Forever Evil # variant. THOSE are the ‘prizes’ here fans. THOSE are the ones to get your hands on. Not an easy task, but getting those will make your bank account very happy. Especially if you get them professionally graded by CGC and score a high grade.

As this Wednesday approaches, DC Comics continues their trend with the 3D covers. InvestComics will follow the same trend too. As we did last week we will be breaking down each comic with the first appearance of the particular villain taking over the book. It’s so much fun to see where some of these villains came from and how much they have evolved and devolved over the course of time. Not every redo is a home run guys/gals. Sometimes things should stay the way they are. Don’t fix what ain’t broke.

DC Comics 3D Comics 9/11/13

[scrollGallery id=296]

Teen Titans (2011 4th Series) #23.1 – Trigon looks really angry on this 3D cover doesn’t he? Hate to be on that Titans team looking at him. Trigon first appeared in The New Teen Titans #4 (1981), creators George Perez and Marv Wolfman at the helm here. This should already be in your collection.

Justice League (2011) #23.2 – Here’s another first appearance that any comic collector should already have in their stash. Another 80’s book; Omega Men #3 (1983) features the first look at Lobo.

Justice League of America (2013 3rd Series) #7.2 – An interesting choice going with a Killer Frost takeover. The frosty one first appeared in Firestorm #3 (1978).

Green Lantern (2011 4th Series) #23.2 – The wannabe (appearance wise – Thanos/Darkseid) Mongul takes over this comic. And another 1980’s comic; check out his debut in DC Comics Presents #27 (1980).

Flash (2011) #23.2 – Reverse-Flash will give Flash a very hard time in his comic book this month. The first Professor Zoom is in 1963’s Flash #139. Love that yellow suit!!

Earth 2 (2012 DC) #15.2 – Boy you talk about a fantastic makeover, this would be it. Solomon Grundy looks like a menace on the 3D cover here. Good job DC! Grundy first appeared all the way back in All-American Comics #61 (1944).

Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #23.2 – The enigmatic Harley Quinn brings her craziness to this comic. Check out the iconic comic (cover wise) Batman: Harley Quinn one shot from 1999 to get her debut.

Batman (2011 2nd Series) #23.2 – And speaking of iconic. The awesomeness of the Riddler appears this week as his hostile takeover will be fantastic probably. Look at that cover! Beautiful! His debut came in Batman #140 (1961). This is definitely a comic to have in your collection. If you do not own this comic, you need to buy it. The Riddler character will always be an uptick character. No losing here. None.

Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #23.2 – If one had to choose the best rouge gallery for one particular DC character; it would have to be Batman, right? Well maybe that’s up for debate on for another day, but Mr. Freeze dons the 3D cover this week and his debut is in Batman #121 (1959). Cover art by Curt Swan? Yes I will have one thank you!

Batman and Robin (2011 2nd Series) #23.2 – The very recent introduction and popular villains ‘Court of Owls’ will take over the Bats and Rob book. COO (abbreviation) were spoken about in the latest Batman #1 New 52 series, but it wasn’t until Batman #5 (New 52) they made their debut.

Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #23.1 – Speaking of rogue galleries, you want to talk about some of the weakest in all of the DC U? Yes Aquaman may be cool now, but boy do his villains need some serious makeovers! Black Manta is no exception here. Debuting in Aquaman #35 (1967).

Superman #23.2 – In actuality, Supes isn’t that far behind in weak villains either. Why do you think we always see Lex and Zod everywhere? Well Brainiac, like so many others have been through the ringer with the changing of his looks as well. If things work, no change is needed, if things do not, changes are always present. Case in point with a lot of these new looks for everyone over the years. But anyways, getting off track here, check out the Brains first appearance in Action Comics #242 (1958).

Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #23.2 – Here we have one of the bad asses in the Superman gallery. Zod! General Zod made his debut in Adventure Comics #283 (1961). Another one of those “can’t lose” books. Although many changes over the years, Zod remains a force in the collectors market.

That’s it for the 3D madness, now onto the number one issue madness this week! But first let’s cover the double digit number one; Captain America (2012 7th Series) #11. In this issue the question is asked, who is Iron Nail? Pick this up and find out!

In the new Mighty Avengers (2013) #1, the team will face off against Proxima Midnight. PM’s arrival was in the recent pages of New Avengers #8. Marvel will look to milk the “Infinity” drama for all it’s worth in Infinity Hunt (2013) #1. This issue will bring a new ‘Contest of Champions’ to the table. If you don’t know exactly what Contest of Champions is, well shame on you! Check out the original classic from 1982; Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions three issue limited series. Here is a quick creators list on this series; Gruenwald, Mantlo, Romita Jr., and Layton. Is there any reason anyone would not know about this comic??

And now we visit the slew of number one issues headed your way this Wednesday. How does anyone afford this hobby anymore?

Rapid fire: A few number one issues REALLY need to be on your radar this week. The aftermarket pricing will reflect the SOLD OUT sign on these if the story is well received. Mythopolis (2013 Ardden) #1 is SOLD OUT, Kings Watch (2013 Dynamite) #1 is SOLD OUT, Hit List (2013) Zenescope #1 might be a sleeper, but Zenescope comics never fare that well in the aftermarket, Locke and Key (2013 7th Series) Alpha #1 will be on the SOLD OUT list shortly, Genie The Genius (2013 Ape) #1 will follow that road, Low Society (2013) #0 may also be a sleeper; it’s on the verge of a sellout, the wildly popular television series will get its own book; Sons of Anarchy (2013 Boom) #1. Live television series’ do not always equate to demand on the comic book front. Actually it’s an extremely rare feat that success is found in the comic book market from a TV show. Eternal Warrior (2013 Valiant) #1 will join the Valiant list of successful sellouts, while Mars Attacks Judge Dredd (2013 IDW) #1 will cater to the Mars Attacks groupie’s.

Another busy week! Don’t forget about the latest InvestComics contest! –WIN a Superman Unchained: Director’s Cut #1 SIGNED by Scott Snyder From InvestComics!! – A big response so far, but you can win it if you’re not in it!
