InvestComics Spider-Man Checklist – Part 1 – Click Image

Writer Peter David and artist Mark Bagley bring the fan favorite clone Ben Reilly into his own on-going series; Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1. Ben Reilly has a few ‘first appearances’ to look at. Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1975) is the first Spider-Clone appearance. It also happens to be Gwen Stacy’s clone origin as well. Maybe we’ll get a Spider-Gwen clone one day and this comic will be in even more demand. Web of Spider-Man #118 (1994); First appearance as Scarlet Spider. The first appearance as Spider-Man; Sensational Spider-Man #0 (1996). That’s it, those are key Ben Reilly books. If you truly believe in this character, these are the books to own. There is a funny thing we noticed about the Mark Bagley (regular cover). Some of the solicits have Scarlet Spider with a hood on and some don’t. Is this a thing? Maybe just an update of the cover solicits (with or without the hood). Either way, maybe be on the look-out for it?

Click on the RED links, Images or the comic cover to buy/bid from All available sellers on Ebay.

Old Man Logan ‘Wolverine’ continues revisiting his past and dealing with the present as he takes on Wendigo and The Hulk for old times sake. Old Man Logan #22, written by Jeff Lemire and art by Eric Nguyen. The cover(s) from this storyline are depicting the old comics from yesteryear behind Wolverine and we love it. Cover for Old Man Logan #22 from Andrea Sorrentino.

Buy Now-No Bidding – Graded Flash Comics $40 and Less – Click Image

DC and Dynamite Entertainment team up as Batman teams up with The Shadow this Wednesday. Writer’s Scott Snyder/Steve Orlando and artist Riley Rossmo are on the case. The two legendary comic characters reunite for the first time since a team-up stint in 1974’s Batman #259. They teamed up for the first time ever in Batman #253 (1973). Two classic books which would make for a nice addition to your collection. Batman The Shadow #1 will feature a first appearance of a new villain. More of a reason to check out this comic.

The 4 part ‘The Button’ story continues this week in Flash #21 (part 2). While we love the lenticular cover(s), we repeat, we love the lenticular cover(s), be careful of the speculative nonsense that may follow it from various sources getting on the hype train. Do not over pay for these covers. We have explained these reasons regarding variant comic book covers (special covers) throughout our Hot Picks post within the last couple of years, but in case you missed it, here it goes again. Again, we love the variant covers as much as the next fan that appreciates great art, but there is one thing a collector must keep in mind when buying the variant lenticular cover(s) coming out as part of the DC gimmick this week. The guts. If the inside of this comic has no significance within the grand scope of things for the next 2 to 5 years, then guess what? You have a pretty cover……that’s it. Again, if you like a variant cover, you should buy it, We encourage it because nice art is nice art, we get that, but do not have the thinking you are ‘investing’ or speculating on a comic that will serve any relevance in years to come. We pointed out in many of our articles to do the grading test with CGC and CBCS. If you see a nice variant cover (signed maybe too?) that is ‘rare’ and has an asking price of $150 or $300 or even $75, you should look at the top right hand corner of the graded book. Shift the eyes there. Empty? Blank? Does it say ‘Joker appearance’? ‘Harley Quinn appearance’? Well if your modern variant says only that or something similar and not ‘First appearance’ or ‘Cameo (first appearance)’, then you have been duped into the hype market. A ‘rare’ modern variant cover or a special glow in the dark/3D/lenticular comic come with the SAME guts as 10,000 other comics with a ‘regular’ cover and is basically a non-factor in the grand scheme of things. If there was a ‘rare’ modern variant/glow in the dark/lenticular of New Mutants #98, well you’re on to something. The guts have significance. The Flash #21 Lenticular cover, if it’s graded a 9.8, guess what you have, you have a neat gimmick cover that will probably state in the right hand corner; ‘The Button story begins. Jason Fabok Lenticular cover.’ (This of course is all on assuming that there is ‘no significant’ feature in this book.) As a speculator, if you’re willing to pluck down serious cash for a 9.8, then by all means do so if you think the resale value will exceed what you paid for it. If you’re looking for a collector’s piece to just hold onto, get it signed and graded yourself and enjoy it. The variant market is completely skewed right now. The horse blinders are on. Collectors of modern books must refocus. The guts, the guts matter, not just a nice cover when it comes to resale value. A nice cover will rarely sustain or outrun the first appearance book or a book of significance. Some may say, but what about the Watchmen element being thrown into the DCU right now regarding Flash #21? Isn’t that a big factor? Well yes and no. Yes for now and no for longevity. Do you really think DC will hold this Watchmen twist into its lure? Another ‘relaunch’ in 4 years perhaps? If you think this may not happen, you must be new to this sport. The guts, the guts, the guts. The end.

The Inhumans movie will be arriving in 2019. By then, Infinity War part II will have hit the screen. A question one may ask here is, will the Inhumans pick up where the Avengers movies cease? Short answer, probably yes. Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man (additions Wasp, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Vision) will fill in the new Avengers team roster after the current team is dismantled in Infinity War I & II. The Avengers can and will continue with an all new lineup one day, but until then, the Inhumans will probably take the mantle for a while. It makes total sense here. Some of the Avenger stars have become way too big for their roles, commanding more money and are also getting “older” as the series progresses. Remember when the phase just started? Chris Evans? Chris Hemsworth? Scarlett Johansson? Robert Downey Jr.? And the list goes on. No one really knew if any of this would work. It did. Now that “it did” and the success has and will run its course, ending with Infinity War II (2019), the only logical monetary thing to do is…..start over. Enter the Inhumans.

Since we all know that Marvel does not own the rights to the X-Men, this will be their workaround. Their version of the X-Men and come hell or high water, Marvel will make this work. Just to drive home a point that they don’t need the X-Men, they have the Inhumans.

It’s all going to start the same way it all began back in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr. Get that name everyone recognizes and get it to work. So with the Inhumans, the character that needs to be front/center and to work is Black Bolt. He’s the leader of the Inhumans. The King of Attilan. Who will be chosen to lead the way to another successful 11 year (more or less) run? Black Bolt will be the next “Tony Stark” because of the lead in to introduce the next phase. The character (the team) will play an intricate role in setting the table for everyone to follow.

The Avengers Infinity War parts I & II will probably (most likely) end many of the Marvel on screen careers. Our favorite characters will be gone. Marvel will set a new precedence in offing characters at a ridiculous clip. The reality is, Robert, Chris, Scarlett, Jeremy and all the others who have been around these movies for years are going to move on eventually to other roles other than superheroes. What better way to add finality to an unprecedented run than sending our heroes to sacrifice themselves against the greatest threat the planet and universe has ever seen, Thanos. Do not kid yourselves, there will be many deaths in the Infinity War parts I & II. In actuality, there has to be. The stadium is over capacity. There has to be closure so that the new blood can come in. That new blood being the Inhumans.

So in 2019, it’s all going to come to a head. 11 years to arrive to the greatest battle of all time. The greatest battle in cinema since dad and son went at it with their Lightsabers. It’s going to take every character fans have seen throughout the years and mash them into two movies. The Avengers cannot and will not defeat Thanos alone. Not happening. The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Winter Solider, Loki, Spider-Man, Warlock and so many more will probably appear in both films. Most will not make it to the next phase.

The comic book speculator has four years to compile their Inhumans comics library. What InvestComics has given the speculative community throughout our ten years is the ability to buy low and….sell high. This checklist is just that. Some of these books are movers right now, but their value in four years time will be immensely different. Tremendous upside here. Yes the first appearance of the Inhumans might be a bit pricey now, but it will not be anywhere near as close to the price it is now when 2019 rolls around. Think big. Think X-Men #1 (1963) or Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975). Marvel Studios’ version of the X-Men will become the next big franchise, do not miss this boat. Inhumans will be huge.

Most of these books if not all of them are extremely affordable…..for now. As time beckons, as news breaks, as announcements are made, as villains are cast, as the Infinity War movie starts coming into light, the Inhumans will become more and more of a household name and you will be very late to the party if you put things on hold until then. Be sure to thank InvestComics for throwing this early party now when the time comes.

As always, there will be missed books within the checklist below. We’re Inhuman, Ha! See what we did there?! There are many books listed. All kinds of first appearances, key issues and cool books in general. We simply do not know what the Inhumans movie will bring, so we tried to cover as many bases as possible for the speculator. If you have a comic you’d like to add, please help the fellow speculators in listing it below in the comment section. AND PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER on this site.

Fantastic Four #47 (1966) Every hero needs an adversary. A sibling at that. In this issue, Black Bolt’s insane brother makes his debut; Maximus. This comic also has the first mention and appearance of the land called Attilan.

Thor #148 (1968) The first of three consecutive, most desirable comics to own (besides the first appearance) if one is collecting key Black Bolt books. The origin of Black Bolt starts here (in a backup story). Still very affordable right now, but this will in fact change. This is also the first appearance of the Wrecker. An absolute non-factor because this comic will triple in value in a few years because of the Black Bolt origin, not because of the Wrecker. Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.

Thor #149 (1968) The continuation of Black Bolt’s origin. Must own.

Thor #150 (1968) The Inhumans origin. Must own.

Marvel Super-Heroes #15 (1968) First solo Medusa story. Black Bolt appearance.

Avengers #95 (1972) Another important comic because of the Marvel cinematic universe. It’s going to take more than just the Avengers team to defeat Thanos in Infinity Wars parts I and II. Will the Inhumans join in the fight along side the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy? Maybe. Maybe not, but this comic here is the first Avengers book the Inhumans appear in. Neal Adams art, Roy Thomas writes and John Buscema provides the cover. It’s also an origin story on Black Bolt and Maximus. Another must buy here.

Here’s the latest installment of long lost since forgotten comic books. Many of these comics are simply not spoken of anymore and SOME of these have no monetary value in the speculative market, but do have a place in our hearts. Great stories and amazing creative talents accompany most of these books. Into the abyss these comics have gone, but here they are once again. Buy them, read them, they’re fun.

Click the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on the books in this article.

Star Brand #1 (1986) Here’s a series that went no where fast. So fast in fact that issue number 19 was the last issue ; “number 19 in a 19 issue limited series.” Really?? Okay. This happened with almost all of the other titles as well when it came to Marvel’s New Universe imprint. Most  say “#32 of a 32 issue Limited Series.” on the top of the book. No lie, true story.

But even the creative firepower couldn’t save this series from its ultimate demise. John Romita Jr. does most of the art and a cover or two for about the first seven issues. Writer Roy Thomas on issue number seven, Keith Giffen art in issue number 9 with a Bob Wiacek cover, issue number ten features Mark Bagley Pencils, and then legend John Byrne takes over art and writing duties as of issue number eleven. And good luck finding that scarce last issue too.

Union Jack #1 (1998) Union Jack’s first solo series comic. Writer/artist and cover all by John Cassaday. When will a UK based character break out anyway? It will happen eventually (as InvestComics has said a while back), but here you have a great 3 part mini-series to read. One of the cool things about the Marvel Comics cover with issue number one is the wording “The Walking Dead”. That’s five years before the Kirkman book. Speaking of which…….

The Walking Dead #1 (1989) Are you aware there was a Walking Dead comic out 14 years prior to Kirkman’s Walking Dead? A four issue zombie horror comic. If you were, kudos to you. If not, now you’re in the know. The Walking Dead #1 from 1989 was put out by Aircel Comics and created by Jim Somerville. Issue number 3 features a Dale Keown cover! Sweet. Good luck finding any of these comics at your local shop.

Black Orchid (1988) Critically acclaimed 3 part series by artist Dave Mckean and writer Neil Gaiman.

Blade Runner (1982) With all of the talking going on regarding another Blade Runner movie, wouldn’t it be cool to get this comic in a 50 cent bin and have it signed/graded by Harrison Ford? A nice collectors item indeed. You’re welcome.

New Release Comics on 5/20/15 (And back issues)

Marvel’s newest title will be hitting this Wednesday; A-Force #1. A much hyped all female Avengers team. With all of the female strong characters of late, this only seems fitting right? Here’s the thing, and this happens way too often. Whenever the big two (Marvel or DC) hit on something (characters/team) that works for them (monetarily), they go ahead and shove it down our throats. Deadpool, Lobo, Wolverine, Spider-Gwen, Ghost Rider, etc. It happens all the time. Appearances aplenty and number one issues as well. The  A-Force team will be shoved in our faces as “must like” material. Here’s newsflash, this A-Force love-fest is not going to last very long. Not being a negative Nancy, just a realist and a speculator. We hope to get proven wrong, but history is doomed to repeat itself here. Quickly, name one mega successful all female comic book team book. You can’t. You can probably rattle off a dozen female characters that are simply red hot right now though and have held their own for years and years. That’s where this all works. Just like some of their counterparts, they are fantastic solo acts or team players. An all female team is not what the fandom really wants. Yes some female comic character are out selling their counterparts easily and we get that the push to lure the girl into the hobby is possibly working, but it’s not going to work with A-Force. Again, prove us wrong, would love that. We want to see success here.
With all this said, the great part about A-Force #1 is we’re probably going to get an endearing story. An all female Avengers heroes team kicking butt should be a fun read. We also know we’re getting a ridiculous amount of variants too. The Adam Hughes variant is sold out.
So get this book because you like to read comics. You probably will not be able to speculate this book and make some serious cash on it. Maybe, possibly an immediate impact, but longer term? Simply don’t see it. Last time here, prove us wrong and sustain some readership/market value. Please. That Adam Hughes variant is nice though isn’t it?! Enjoy the great read.

More Secret Wars awesomeness with the release of Secret Wars Battleworld #2. Witness all of the knock em down drag them out fights in this comic. M.O.D.O.K. Evilness reaches new heights here. M.O.D.O.K.’s First appearance is in Tales of Suspense #94 (1967). Such a goofy looking character, and it’s brought to you by Stan Lee, Jack ‘King’ Kirby and Joe Sinnott. Wow now that’s some firepower. For many years fans have clamored the presence of M.O.D.O.K. On the big screen and it just doesn’t seem feasible without looking completely goofy. Maybe, somehow Marvel figures it out, but seeing a huge head like that flying around would be a “jump the shark” type deal and not a productive one. More like a Dark Crystal or a muppet type feel, thus not taken seriously. Marvel Studios is probably aware of the possible vibe and this is why we’ll probably never see this character on screen.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

The Marvel Ultimate universe is ending. What a ride is has been! Witness this tragic event in Ultimate End #1. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Mark Bagley. This is the same exact creative team that ushered in the Marvel Ultimate Universe 15 years ago with the first Ultimate comic ever; Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000). Ultimate End #1 will be a story for the ages. No more Ultimate Universe. And we don’t really see it coming back from Marvel either. This won’t be a “take-back” from Marvel. We don’t see Marvel going back to the well anytime soon re-releasing Ultimate books or the universe. Marvel is merging the two universe’s in the Secret Wars/Battleworld story, so essentially they really don’t have a need to revisit the Ultimate universe later on down the line. Of course it can still happen because if Marvel wants it they’ll do it, but bringing back the Ultimate universe (ever) after the dust settles on this storyline would be a tremendous disappointment.

Planet Hulk #1 will be full of awesome this Wednesday. Regular readers here at InvestComics know that Planet Hulk and World War Hulk have been promoted here as enormous buys because of the movie speculation we were first on. No one else was informing speculators to buy The Incredible Hulk #92 (2006) back a few years ago, the first Planet Hulk. Also What If Planet Hulk #1 (2007). We still recommend these comic. Buy them. A surprise creative team backup story accompanies Planet Hulk #1, we look forward to the surprise!

Remember InvestComics informing everyone to buy anything Spider-Verse , and that first Spider-Gwen was in there which paid for all of your new comics and then some for a few months? Yeah, so now Spider-Verse is back; Spider-Verse #1 and this just means that there will be another chance for one of those first appearances or re-introductions to do well in the aftermarket. Stay close here with your ear to the ground. That all said, the Robert Rodriguez Spider-Gwen variant is sold out already. InvestComics informs speculators and readers almost every week, they need to get on top of any new Star Wars comics if they want to be in the know and the possible aftermarket frenzy. At any time a new hero or villain can show up. This will cause a huge aftermarket boost. Get in and get out. If you want, hold onto at least one of your $4.99 comics if you want to possibly wait and see if the market will explode after the movie in December. Buy new Star Wars comics. All of them……and the new Star Wars #5 this week.

Master of Kung Fu #1.….maybe Marvel really wants this work because of the Iron Fist Netflix on the horizon. Create that whole Karate/Kung Fu vibe. Bring back the Kung Fu lure, make it happening again. Get the first Master of Kung Fu in Special Marvel Edition #15 (1973) just in case we have a resurgence. Pencils and cover by Jim Starlin too. Nice.

A bunch of number one comics to definitely check out this week;

Insufferable #1 from IDW, written by Mark Waid, art by Peter Krause. A new team book and it looks awesome. Boom Studios; Oh Killstrike #1. Interesting premise here. An escaped comic book character needs to be put back into a comic book. And the Kris Anka variant cover is sold out. Aspen Comics makes an appearance this week here with Psycho Bonkers #1.What a great title! Love it. And what a great looking read too. A five issue mini-series. Adventures of Aero Girl #1 from Action Lab Entertainment also looks like an interesting/fun read. The first Accelerators series did well for Blue Juice comics, so now we have a follow up with Accelerators Momentum #1. Valhalla Mad #1 from Image Comics. Written by Joe Casey. A sellout for sure. A whacked out take on mythology. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1, written by Mr. IDW himself Chris Ryall. Dark Horse; Resident Alien Sam Hain Mystery #1. A good looking story here. Chuck Dixon’s Winterworld Frozen Fleet #1 from IDW will be a good book to sit back and read.

Deadpools Secret Secret Wars #1. A wacky tale here written by Cullen Bunn. Great Tony Harris regular cover too. And also a solid homage grave variant as well. Sold out comics here most likely.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 7-17-13

THE mecca of all comic pricing, the Overstreet comic book price guide hits this week. It’s the single most recognized source (besides the internet) comic book guide of its kind. One can find out virtually any information they need about a specific comic in there. Although the pricing of the comics were always on the “lower end”, it’s a fantastic reference book. So pick up your Overstreet Price Guide (1970- ) #43 this week with your choice of either the hardcover (Mike Deodato Jr cover) or the softcover (Andy Kubert cover) and go through it with the magnifying glass as I did as a young boy. You will be amazed at some of the references that you were never aware of. A collectors dream all in one place……

InvestComics HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=279]

Most/sometimes in the aftermarket when it comes to the big 2, many collectors are caught by surprise on a hot book. Not such the case in the Todd McFarlane/Erik Larsen Spidey days and thereafter. Todd had Venom, Erik had Cletus Kasady, and Mark Bagley had Carnage. Amazing Spider-Man #361 (first appearance of Carnage) at one time was a very hot sought after comic. Nowadays, it’s still a book that collectors clamor for, but the pricing has come down significantly. So with the recent success of “Superior” Spider-Man, readers will now see Superior Carnage (2013) #1 this week. Remember when the “Noir” titles were a hot thing? Readers were bombarded with Noir titles up the ying yang. Well maybe we’re headed down the same path here? Superior Deadpool, Superior Daredevil? Ugh, we hope not. The success of Superior Spider-Man will water down its uniqueness if the word “Superior” supersedes every title. But with all of the Debbie downer stuff out of the way, Superior Carnage #1 does in fact look like a fun ride. Be sure to check it out this week.

Red Sonja has made her presence known in the comic book world quite often, countless number one issues from Dynamite Entertainment as well as countless appearances within the Marvel Universe. This week however from Dynamite Entertainment will release Red Sonja (2013 Dynamite) #1 and this one is one to watch out for. It’s not like others that have come before. This number one issue brings the awesome creative talents of writer Gail Simone to the table. Yes, this will be good. Yes, you should pick it up. Brianna gives a 7/10 rating in her reviews (appearing tomorrow). And just in case the Red Sonja decides to breathe a second life, be sure to have Conan the Barbarian #23 (1973 – first appearance) in your stash. This comic is already a collector’s item anyway.

Avengers (2012 5th Series) #16 asks the question “What ever happened to Starbrand and Nightmask?” Guess we will find out right?! What we do know is that these two individuals originally appeared in their own titles under the New Universe umbrella before being rebranded into the Marvel Universe today. Both Nightmask #1 and Starbrand #1 from 1986 can be found at your local comic shops bathroom magazine rack or the giveaway boxes. Not saying they are bad stories or bad comics, just saying they are very accessible.

IDW will bring back a comic from extinction – Dinosaurs Attack (2013 IDW) #1. Dinosaurs Attacks originally appeared as an Eclipse comic graphic novel from 1991. The best part of the IDW release is that they bring back the same creative team that brought us the 1991 story. Herb Trimpe, Gary Gerani, and Earl Norem.

Green Lantern New Guardians (2011) #22 introduces the beginnings of Lantern’s next major foe. It’s always a great thing to get on the ground floor with a new storyline. Fans of the 1966 Batman show will have some fun this Wednesday with Batman 66 (2013 DC) #1. For the first time ever, DC covers the campy show in comic book form. BAM-POW-ZANG! Fun times ahead!

Here are a few independent comics to get onto your radar this week. A new take on the Watson & Holmes story – Watson and Holmes (2013 New Paradigm) #1, this looks very promising. Numbercruncher (2013 Titan) #1 also looks very interesting, Dark Horse offers up two new number ones to check out; Strain The Fall (2013 Dark Horse) #1 and Blood Brothers (2013 Dark Horse) #1. And BOOM! Studios gives us Day Men (2013 Boom) #1.

That’s it for this week. Sign up for the InvestComics newsletter below or on the front page of the website.

MegaCon 2013 Autographs

[scrollGallery id=240]

If you are a regular InvestComics monthly newsletter subscriber you found out before everyone else about the very cool things in store for you the fan. Pictured above are the cool giveaways (and one special auction) that will be happening for the next few months. Included in the awesome bunch is the InvestComics One & Done Anthology signed right on the cover by some of the industry’s best. This Anthology which rose over $250 so far for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund will be auctioned off on Ebay with the proceeds going to the CBLDF. Hang tight for that auction (Lots of giveaway contest beforehand). The auction announcement will be splashed all over the InvestComics landscape, so you won’t miss it when it does happen. So who did exactly sign that cover you ask? How about Dan Parent, Chuck Dixon, Billy Tucci, Neal Adams, Alex Saviuk, Nelson Ortega, Terry Cronin, Ethan Van Sciver, Georges Jeanty, Adam Hughes, Rob Hunter, Jim Cheung, Gail Simone, Bob Layton, Whilce Portacio, Rick Osman, Frank Tieri, Bob McLeod, Jimmy Palimotti, Chris Claremont, Mark Bagley, Frank Cho, Amanda Conner, George Perez, and Paul Pelletier. And to top off the list, I (Jay Katz) will sign the inside. That’s quite the list there isn’t it?? As for the other comics shown; New Excalibur #1 signed by the Legend himself Chris Claremont, Villains United #1 signed by Gail Simone (Interview on InvestComics Youtube coming!), Tales of the Teen Titans #44 signed by the Legend George Perez, Nightwing Target #1 signed by Chuck Dixon, Freelancers #3 signed by Eric Esquivel (Interview on InvestComics Youtube now! And the comic is up for grabs too right now!), Wonder Woman #169 signed by Legend George Perez, Robin II #1 signed by Chuck Dixon,  and last but not least, Vincent Price House of Horrors #1 signed by colorist Jeff Balke and Writer/CEO of InvestComics Jay Katz! Whew! And finally how about an autograph from Terry Cronin? (Offered up right now!) Or maybe you’re a fan of the Walking Dead? How about an autograph from Zombie walker Michael Koske?! Yes lots to take in, but be sure to enter these contests to win.

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=238]

Okay Hot Picks time. There are certainties in life. The character Thanos is one such case. So is the fact that last Sunday InvestComics informed you guys/gals that East of West #1 is a not to miss book. Yes, listen to the Broker when he tells you about the certainties in the collectors market. It’ll do your wallet some good. So getting back to Thanos now, if you ever doubted anything in the speculation market, this one would not be the one to doubt. If you don’t own or are thinking about owning Iron Man #55, stop thinking and do it. I cannot stress enough how much Thanos is going to make an impact on the movie side of things. The best comparison to make here is actually quite simple. Thanos will be the modern day Darth Vader. I have said this before and I will keep saying it. Thanos’ impact in the theaters will directly impact the back issue market. This said, this week Thanos Rising (2013) #1 will be altering the Marvel Universe as we know it. Yes that villain Thanos is going to bring it and you better be ready. This dude is a bad ass.

…..More certainties this week; Harbinger Wars (2013) #1. This comic will be a quick sell out, so you better grab one off the shelf before they disappear.

Superior Spider-Man (2012) #7 will see the return of Cardiac. The first appearance of Cardiac came in Amazing Spider-Man #342. Want to feel old? This comic was penciled by Erik Larsen 23 years ago!! 1990….23 years ago!! Wow.

DC Comics celebrates with a special issue of Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #19. “Mystery of the 900!” Umm, okay.

….More certainties this week; Regular Show #1. This book will be harder to find than any other in the aftermarket for cover price after Wednesday. Yep.

So with Venom (2011 Marvel) #33 we get the ol’ homage cover thingy going. Isn’t that nice? One little thing here though. Spawn #222 a few issues ago did the same exact thing. Two comics in such close proximity of each other paying homage to Todd McFarlane’s (paid himself homage; he’s proud of himself) Amazing Spider-Man #316. Click on the collage below to see a bigger image of all 3 covers side by side. Which one do you like best?

Venom

Okay so wrapping up. How about a bunch of number one and number zero issues to look out for? Miss Fury (2013 Dynamite) #1 (Look at that cover – holy assets Batman!), Robyn Hood vs Red Riding Hood (2013 Zenescope) #1, Steam Wars (2013 Antarctic Press) #0 (interesting concept here, Star Wars theme = sold out), Tales of Fear (2013 Aazurn) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #0, Snow Angel (2013 Dark Horse) #0, Last of Us American Dreams (2013 Dark Horse) #1, andPolarity (2013 Boom) #1.

The latest Hot Picks comes at you this week with some old charcters coming back, old creators, a new event and a new creative team. Click ahead and enjoy!

spidermanbatman_1995.gif
jla38.gifThis week Justice League of America gets a new teamsuperman80pagegiant_2000.gif member. Not a teammember with special powers, a member with the power of a pencil. Mark Bagley takes over the art duties for the ‘new era’ in the Justice League team! This isn’t the first time that Mark has had a crack at any of the Justice dudes. Go back to 1995 to see Mark drawing Batman in the one shot crossover Spider-Man & Batman. His first crack at Superman came some 5 years later in Superman 80 page Giant. You could get either one of these at cover price. Sticking to the Batman for a little bit, Azrael is coming back again. I really wish Joe Quesada was drawing the new Azrael#1 book like he used to back in the day. Batman: Sword of Azrael #1batman_swordofazrael1_1992.gif from 1992 was the debut Azrael, Joe Q was the one who brought him into the
DC
azrael1.gifUniverse and it seems DChas been trying to get this hot character going for
many years after his once ‘hot status’, much like the character Lobo was for
them at one time. So pick up the back issue of Azrael before you pick up the
new number one issue this week to see how everything got started for Mr. AZ.

incrediblehulk603.gifA family get together is in order this week. It’s a first meeting ofMarvel’s youngest go to characters since X-23. Skaar and Daken face off for the first time in a meeting that has been a little overdue. We all remember Incredible Hulk #181. Will this issue be a 181? No mightyavengers30.gifway, not even close. Will this issue be of ‘some’ significance because it’s the first meeting of Marvel’s next biggest characters? This is a yes.
Hey anyone want to see just about every Avenger in every single Marvel book in ONE book? You get your chance in Mighty Avengers #30. Every Avenger on every team makes an appearance in this issue including The Dark Avengers. Avenger fans Assemble!
angelvsfrankenstein.gifJohn Byrne has a hand in many of the characters mentioned in this week’s Hot Picks. Love him or hate him, he’s an icon in the comic bookcasperandthespectrals1.gifindustry. Everything from his mini Hulk run, Avengers and the Superman:Man of Steel run. He’s done it all and the man could crank out comics like no other can. So that said, love him or hate him, you have to respect the guy for what he has brought to the comic industry. Why all of the John Byrne talk you ask? Well he’s come back to write and draw the new IDW one shot comic Angel vs. Frankenstein! Very cool and very comic book friendly. Another friendly comic will be making a comeback this week. Catch everyone’s favorite Friendly ghost in Casper and the Spectrals #1. It’s been a while since we have seen this ghost around. Look for Ardden Entertainment to score nice sales on this comic. Then look for a children’s cartoon, the toys, the movie and you get where this is going. Casper will be a hot commodity again so be prepared to see lots of him in the months and years to come.
invincible67.gifSo what’s a week without an event? No not from the big 2, but Image is up this
time.
Image United promises to be the largest event in Image comic’s short history (17 years to be exact). Pick up a prelude to this event in Invincible #67. If
this Image storyline becomes as big as the buzz surrounding it, this would be the issue to have.
