Iron Fist Checklist

Marvel Premiere #15 (1974) The first appearance of Iron Fist. The holy grail of Iron Fist comics. Writer Roy Thomas, Pencils and cover Gil Kane, and inker Dick Giodano.

When Marvel/Netflix get it together, Iron Fist will be a household name. If for some reason it doesn’t work out with Netflix, look for Marvel to want to hit the big screen instead. The mere fact that the Iron Fist character is mentioned so much these days shows a tremendous amount of interest on Marvel’s (Disney’s) part. So with that, Marvel will start the Kung-Fu entertainment revolution once again either way. This comic also features the first appearances of Ferocia, Harold Meachum, Nuan, Wendell Rand, Heather Rand. Shu-Hu, and Yu-Ti.

The Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1 (1974) First appearance of Lin Sun, Robert Diamond, and Abraham Brown.

The Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu Special #1 (1974) The second appearance of Iron Fist. This is a magazine form comic.

Marvel Premiere #19 (1974) The first appearances of Colleen Wing and Professor Lee Wing. This comic also signifies the first appearance of Wolverine via an ad within the comic. It predates The Incredible Hulk #181. Cool stuff.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 11/26/14

2116199 2116208 2116412There will be plenty of new reading material and speculation material to check out this Wednesday. A bunch of number one issues make their way to the InvestComics Hot Picks this week.

The Spider-Man family makes their impact felt with sale numbers. Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors (2014) Marvel Universe #1 Is already not available at a major on line comic shop, which means the book is already making waves. Scarlet Spiders (2014) #1 is just about sold out at Diamond, so definitely a book to get your hands on. And Spider-Man 2099 (2014) #6 continues the highly successful Spider-Verse story line. A good week indeed for the Spider-Man universe and fans alike.

Death comes in two’s this week. Check out Deathstroke (2014 DC 2nd Series) #2 this week. It has the new character Odysseus as its 1399804_xl 2114075 2116268focal point and artist Tony Daniel continues to kill it. And why is Mr. Daniel still not a superstar is beyond comprehension. He was mentioned here on InvestComics many years ago during his spectacular Batman run. He was mentioned many times thereafter. This guy is a superstar, so lets all start paying attention and act accordingly. No reason why fans should be able to just walk up to this guy during a comic convention (no line). Deathlok #1 showed some strong sales as is Deathlok (2014 4th Series) #2. Deathlok right now is a hot comic. The big question will be; can the character hold his own? Will the hammer fall down on this series eventually? Hopefully not.

Batman Eternal writer Ray Fawkes gives fans a new Batman flavor this week; Gotham By Midnight (2014) #1An awesome $20 variant by Andrea Sorrentino accompanies the new release.

2059172 2061308 Darkseid will be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Thanos eventually down the road on the big screen. Besides getting his first appearance, which still has upside if bought at a normal rate and not an inflated one, a collector should be gathering up early appearances of Darkseid. This week in Infinity Man and the Forever People (2014) #5 readers will be treated to Mecha-Darkseid. Don’t really recall seeing too much of Mecha-Darkseid around……

Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #7 hits on the origins of The Huntress, The Flash, and Superboy. Always a great read and interesting tidbits you may not have known about your favorite characters.

Two giant comics to have on your radar this week, The amazingly hot Enormous (2014) Ongoing #5 and then there is that company that InvestComics has been telling readers about for quite a while now; Action Lab Entertainment. These guys are putting out some quality. 2115281 2116991Check out Planet Gigantic (2014 Action Lab) #1. Sales are looking at a sold out comic very soon. It’s just a matter of time before one of these Action Lab comics completely blows up.

Hawkeye’s Matt Fraction brings his own creation to Image Comics this Wednesday. The far out experience is called Ody-C (2014 Images) #1. The colors dude, some many colors……

Other number one issues to check out this week; Toe Tag Riot (2014 Black Mask) #1, Separators (2014) #1, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014 Boom) #1, Madman In Your Face 3D Special (2014 Image) #1, and Angry Birds Transformers (2014 IDW) #1.

See you soon. Invest wisely.

2114000Carpe Diem.

Not much going on this week as far as speculation is concerned, but lots of great titles to pick up and read. A slow week in a speculation market is also a fantastic time to look through some long boxes and search for some of the recommendations InvestComics has feed in the recent weeks.

Superman Batman Logo DC

So before we get to the Hot Picks, how about the most anticipated panel at the San Diego Comic Con? The Marvel Studio Panel. Well to say it Avengers Age of Ultronwas “spectacular” would be an overstatement. To say it was great would also be an overstatement. This panel was supposed to be the one to rip the doors off the internet. It fell extremely flat. Trotting out actor Tom Hiddleston in his Loki costume to start off the panel, making the crowd go wild, but delivering absolutely nothing noteworthy in the context of a breaking news story. Not that anything was expected from Tom, but Tom became a diversion to the BIG picture. Fans went wild and then nothing. New clips of the new Cap movie and Guardians movie. What about some more news about the speculation of Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Antman, and even Vin Diesel?! Marvel in typical fashion churned the hype box so tightly that it became a huge dud. That’s UNTIL Josh Whedon came out! Cheers!! Crowd goes wild! Yes!! This will be it!! Joss will announce something crazy right?!?! Josh says “Avengers Age of Ultron” will be the title of the new Avengers movie. Wow really? That’s it?? Sorry guys, but you dropped the ball on this one. The biggest stage of all comic cons and that’s all we get? It’s been a while since you’ve dropped the ball (in the movie department), so we’ll give you a pass here. DC Entertainment actually outshined Marvel yesterday in the movie news announcement department with their Superman/Batman 2015 scheduled for release in 2015. Now THIS was breaking news. This was worthy of a fan getting excited about. Not prancing out actors and actresses of your movies everyone knows about already. Who cares really? Getting a first look clip of the new Cap or Guardians movie, now that was cool, but Marvel hasn’t shared that with anyone else except for the fans in Hall H. DC said checkmate at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Good job guys/gals, it’s been a while since you’ve trumped Marvel in “breaking news” as far as the big screen goes.

Now let’s get to some Comics you should check out this week shall we?

InvestComics Hot Picks

[scrollGallery id=281]

Batman #612Anyone remember that sketch cover Jim Lee did back a few years ago where Superman is chocking the hell out of Batman? It was actually a second print, Batman #612 to be more precise. That comic actually commands more money in the aftermarket than does the first print. Shorter print run, plus it’s totally bad ass. This week however, DC goes back to the drawing board (no pun intended) with Superman Unchained (2013 DC) Directors Cut #1. This $5.99 comic will deliver the “director’s cut” of the original sold out number one issue. This series has some serious creator star power and will show no signs of slowing down. It’s best to get in on this series before those back issues start getting out of reach as far as dollars and cents go. Not too sure if the aftermarket will sustain the demand in the long haul, but for now it’s a nice series to get your hands on any variants that are available to cash them in for say…..a first appearance of Darkseid, Deathstroke, Rocket Raccoon, etc. Don’t expect too much from this priced high comic at $5.99. It’s a harder when you pluck down six bucks for what essentially is a reprint with a sketch cover, bells and whistles. Get variants of this series, that is where the money is waiting to be made.

Speaking of a comic that is critically acclaimed, Matt Fraction has turned around a once blah Marvel character into a force. Hawkeye could never really find his place in the Marvel Universe, but Matt has done it. Fraction has become what Miller was for Daredevil, McFarlane was for Spidey, Synder is for Batman, Adams was for Lantern, and on and on. These creators have become synonymous with their work on these characters. This week Hawkeye (2012 4th Series) Annual #1 continues that trend for Matt Fraction as he embeds his name in the Hawkeye character.

Marvel Team-Up #1Last week (or the week before?) the InvestComics Hot Picks spoke about the ridiculous onslaught readers may have to be subjected to with the word “Superior” on too many comic titles. Well here we go again. Superior Spider-Man Team Up (2013) #1 comes out us as a regular ongoing. The series will feel much better with Peter Parker at the helm, but until then you can enjoy looking at the cover to Marvel Team-Up #1 to the right here. As Archie and Edith would say “Those were the days.” Who’s Archie and Edith you ask? Ugh I feel old!

On the topic of team-ups we have two very cool ones happening from Dynamite Entertainment and IDW. Check out Army of Darkness vs Hack Slash (2013 Dynamite) #1 and Rocketeer Spirit Pulp Friction (2013 IDW) #1. Fun reading on Wednesday here!

Mass Effect Foundation (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Lobster Johnson Scent of Lotus (2013 Dark Horse) #1, and Gamma (2013 Dark Horse) #0 round out the books to check out this week.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter. News and a new Contest (a signed comic!) coming up soon.

See you soon, Invest wisely.

Thousands of new Inhumans have powered up around the globe, leaving  Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine and the rest of the Marvel Universe to react to this emerging new race of super-powerful, super-strange beings!

“The Inhumans are here to stay, and there are lots of them,” explains Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor In Chief, in an interview with Marvel.com. “Their emergence in the Marvel Universe –during and after Infinity– will be a game-changer. Who’s to say the planet is big enough for everyone?”

Leading the charge on humanity’s bold new age comes the biggest series of 2014, Inhuman #1! From white-hot creative team of writer Matt Fraction (Hawkeye, Fantastic Four) and artist Joe Madureira (Savage Wolverine, Avenging Spider-Man), Inhuman rewrites the rules of the Marvel Universe. No truer words than “Among Us Hide the Inhumans” have ever been spoken, as Marvel explores what happens if you discover you are INHUMAN!?

“The events of Infinity jumpstart a long-dormant genetic inhuman strain.  It leads into a global crisis overnight — in the middle of, and coming out from, Infinity”, writer Matt Fraction said in an interview with Marvel.com. “The idea that there’s a secret super hero city, and I might belong there, was a hook that fascinated me.  Inhuman means I’m telling small, human, intimate origin stories about new Inhuman characters, set against the grander story of the politics of a fragmented royal family battling one another for dominance. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done.”

InHuman_TeaserThis Fall, the superhuman race takes an uncompromising leap as Inhumanity washes over the Marvel Universe with more heroes—and villains—than ever before!

Fraction and Chaykin team up on SATELLITE SAM

SEX, DEATH, AND LIVE TV

This July, acclaimed comic book creators Matt Fraction (Hawkeye, Casanova, Iron Man) and Howard Chaykin (BLACK KISS, AMERICAN FLAGG) will take readers back to the Golden Age of Television, a time when innocence was as manufactured a fiction as the perfect families in the comedies that captivated audiences at home. Their new Image Comics series SATELLITE SAM, debuting in July, takes a look at the darkness behind the small screen when, in 1951, Carlyle Bishop, the star of the beloved serial “Satellite Sam” turns up dead in a filthy flophouse.

Carlyle’s son Michael has a hunch that his father’s death was anything but natural, but the only clue is a box full of photographs of women in various states of undress — and Mike can’t bring himself to stay sober long enough to make any sense of it.

For Fraction and Chaykin, SATELLITE SAM is a chance to tell a murder mystery while simultaneously divesting the 1950s of its mantle of moral purity.

“It’s a detective story, a history of television, and a record of addiction, sex, and depravity during a time when the antiseptic shine off Ozzie and Harriet obscure what was really happening in the world,” said writer Fraction. “And these are just a few of the many joys that come from telling a story about television while it was being invented as a mass medium in New York City.”

The creative team researched television’s early days in preparation for the series, getting a feel for the era and for the people who lived real lives while inventing an idealized — and fictionalized — image of families and relationships.

“We’d been talking about SATELLITE SAM for a while, but what really got it going was a long Winter’s day Matt and I spent wandering New York, feeling the city’s ghosts, its lost and found architecture, ending up at the Paley Center, where we watched kinescopes of long dead men and women, acting out children’s fantasies, while living complex lives off-camera,” said Chaykin. “To say that I’m both having the time of my life collaborating on this project, and getting my ass kicked in the process, is to grossly understate the case.”

SATELLITE SAM is an ongoing black-and-white series. Its first issue can be pre-ordered now from the May issue of Previews and will be in stores on July 3.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 12-7-11

Welcome to InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 12-7-11.

First thing on the agenda today (some self promoting!) will be pointing out that the new Vincent Price Present #36 comic coming out this week will be my very own first published work. A word of warning here before all of the animal activists gets their panties in a bunch. It’s a horror story that in no way depicts the boundaries of who I am as a person. I love animals, and so does Stephen King.

So moving on from the unnecessary explanation, I want to thank once again a fantastic team that helped my story come to life. The President of Bluewater Productions Darren Davis, the awesome artistry of Stefano Cardoselli, and colorist extraordinaire Jeff Balke. All of you guys rock, and thank you for making my dream a reality starting point.

So technically Vincent Price #36 falls under the Hot Picks umbrella. It’s the first published work of a newbie. I’m picking one up!

Marvel Comics is daring to change the Marvel Universe landscape once again. If everyone received a penny for each time marvel has thrown out the phrase in one of their solicits “this will change the face of the Marvel Universe”, or something close to that, Marvel would probably be filing for Chapter 11 again. That being said, will this mean that we will not be checking Hulk #45? Of course not, we have to, curiosity killed the reader no? Hopefully not a big letdown……

The Defenders comic is back! Remember back in the day how much fun this comic was? Well it’s back with another go-around. However, this Defenders team features the original ensemble minus the big green guy with some added members. Another minus to point out has to be the ridiculous 6 variant covers.

The 2011 version of the Defenders will be brought to you by writer Matt Fraction, and artist Terry Dodson. The defensive teams first appearance can be found in Marvel Feature #1 (1971) for $200. Four years ago this comic was within the $70 range. I know this personally because I bought it back then. Not a tremendous turnaround, but a decent one at the very least.

This week on the new comic book shelf you will find a comic that will feature some of the lamest third rate villains ever assembled in a comic. Villains For Hire #1 has a lineup that will make some say “who? what?.” Since Marvel was so kind enough to even give us this book, we should have fun with it too. There are a total of seven villains appearing in this book. If you decide you want to have some fun hunting down their first appearances, be very prepared to pay your deductable and then some. Here is the list you’ll need to have on hand.

Daredevil #4 (1964) – First appearance of Purple Man. Purple is an expensive color. $800

Amazing Spider-Man #46 (1967) – First Appearance of Shocker. Not too bad of a jolt at $300

Uncanny X-Men #141 (1981) – First Avalanche. This comic is the best of the bunch. Not because of the Avalanche appearance, but because of everything else in this comic. John Byrne art, first appearances of Rachael Summers, Pyro, and a classic cover from Byrne and Austin to boot! No chill here.

The Sub Mariner #5 (1968) – First Tiger Shark. Too much of a bite here at $60.

Marvel Premiere #21 (1975) – First Misty Knight. A soggy $20.

Amazing Spider-Man #222 (1981) – First Speed Demon. No quickie here at $16, but a great Walt Simonson cover!

Thunderbolts #34 (1997) – First Scourge. Find this one in the 50 cent bins at your local shop.

Another X book from Marvel tests the waters this week, X-Club #1. The X-Men Science Team gets a comic. Yes that’s right, the X-Men Science Team.

Two Independent comics (Editor Note: 3 not including Vincent Price Presents #36) to check out this week. Irredeemable #32 will start a mini crossover event with Incorruptible. A lot of fun here because these two comics rock on their own. Also check out that ridiculously awesome cover from Trevor Hairsine! Anyone remember Voltron? Well they’re coming back in Voltron #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. The first take on a Voltron comic appeared in 1985 from Modern Comics. A $3 book.

Usually we don’t cover posters, but the new Carnage USA poster is a beauty from Clayton Crain. Click on the image to enlarge and admire the glorious piece.

Covers of the week below, check those out too.

See you next week.

Invest wisely.
