Batgirl #9 continues the Ethan Cobblepot story. Batgirl meets up with Ethan’s daddy; The Penguin. Writer Hope Larson, artist Christian Wildgoose.
Mitch Gerads’ Vigilante Southland #6 cover pays homage to Keith Pollard’s Vigilante #1 (1983).

Madame Hydra seems to be the one behind Steve Rogers becoming the ‘bad guy’. Find out in Captain America: Steve Rogers #14 what the Madam has been up to. Writer Nick Spencer and artist Javier Pina bring some(?) of the reasons as to why Steve Rogers is all about Hydra these days. Many fanboys had their panties all tied up too tight when Steve hailed Hydra a little while back and needed something to complain about instead of realizing that Marvel was telling a story. All will be well in given time, back to normal. It’s absurd how some fans were reacting. Getting back to Madam Hydra; her first appearance was in Captain America #110 (1969). Penciled by Jim Steranko and written by Stan Lee. Classic cover from Steranko.
A new Iron Fist #1 comic from writer Ed Brisson and artist Mike Perkins hits this Wednesday. We are quite sure this comic will get more respect than the new Netflix television show is getting. Lots of variant covers to choose from.

Valiant Entertainment will give comic fans something to dig into this week. Valiant always delivers on the story front. If you’re a comic fan, you should know this already. If not, shame on you. Get with it.  Writer Jeff Lemire brings the character Bloodshot into a new light with Bloodshot Reborn #0. Pencils from Renato Guedes.
Early critical acclaim for X-O Manowar #1 will send it back to the presses in a hurry. Look for a quick sellout from writer Matt Kindt and penciler Tomas Giorello.

Spencer & Lieber upgrade the bad-guys with THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN ongoing

Take A Walk On The Dark Side With THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN!

New York, NY—April 2nd, 2013— This July, critically acclaimed writer Nick Spencer and Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber put fans in the shoes of the all-new Sinister Six with The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1! This all new ongoing, launching duringSuperior Spider-Month, gives fans a whole new look into the world of Superior Spider-Man,  great for lapsed and new readers alike!

With superior power comes superior responsibility…and superior villains!  Boomerang, Shocker, Speed Demon, the Beetle, and Overdrive take a cue from the Superior Spider-Man and get upgraded for a new era of evil – and the score of a lifetime! It’s a tale of suspense that’ll turn the Marvel Universe upside down – as only THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN can!

“The beauty of the Spider-Man world has always been that for all the web-slinging action and adventure, Peter Parker lives in the world outside your window and his villains reflect that,” explains Tom Brennan, editor, Marvel Entertainment. “The new world ofSuperior Spider-Man demands a look at the lives, lies, schemes and dreams of his villains.  Spider-Man’s evolved – will his villains as well?”

Following the embarrassing beating fromSuperior Spider-Man #1, can Boomerang and crew rebound to prove once and for all they can make it in the big leagues?

“This is a book about the working class guys; these are not the Kingpins or Green Goblins or Doc Ocks of the world,” explains Spencer in an interview with Marvel.com. “These are the small-time crooks looking for a quick score so they can pay their alimony and get the loan shark off their back. A lot of the book is from Boomerang’s perspective, and he’s very much aware of that—and he sees this new Sinister Six he’s formed as one last big shot at real money and real power. He’s got a lot riding on this.”

This July, Spencer and Lieber tangle with the Spider-Verse’s newly-infamous villains inThe Superior Foes of Superior Spider-Man #1!

Spencer & Rossmo bring A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

A CITY OF TERROR IN BEDLAM

New series by Spencer and Rossmo from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – August 23, 2012 — BEDLAM, the new Image Comics series by Nick Spencer (MORNING GLORIES, THIEF OF THIEVES) and Riley Rossmo (GREEN WAKE, DEBRIS), is set in a city that has been terrorized by a maniacal killer and crime boss called Madder Red.

The killer has been rehabilitated and has reclaimed his given name, Filmore Press, but the city of Bedlam is still soaked with the blood and madness he left in his wake.

“It’s a scary world these characters live in. A desperate one. It’s brutal what we put them through,” says writer Spencer. “The shocks aren’t confined to the last page, they’re peppered throughout. There are a lot of ‘shift in your seat uncomfortably’ moments. You don’t get Riley Rossmo to draw your book and not heap on the horror and violence.”

Rossmo’s art is in a moody wash of muted tones, with shocks of stark red.

“Bedlam’s art is pulling a bit stylistically from my last three books,” said Rossmo. “I’m trying for a cleaner line, lots of spotted blacks, and strong well-designedcolor palettes. The Film ‘M’ and David Mazzucchelli are big visual influences. I’m super-happy with the pages I’ve finished so far.”

BEDLAM’s first issue is to be released on Halloween, and the creative team anticipate that it will be the first of many.

“There’s a long-form, big commitment story here, that we will hopefully tell for years to come,” said Spencer. “It’s like Morning Glories in that sense. The book’s not going to be around a little while then vanish. The goal here is to build a mythology around a modern American metropolis, with Madder Red as our guide. It’s exhilarating, starting down the path of something likethis.”

At 48 pages, BEDLAM #1 (AUG120461) is a double-sized introduction to a cityscape of murder, mayhem and mystery with a cover by Frazer Irving (Xombi) . It is available for pre-order now.

If you haven’t heard by now, I will be writing a one shot for BlueWater Productions under the Vincent Price Presents title book. A special thanks to all of those who supported me when this news broke. I truly appreciate it, and look forward to sharing the process of building the comic with all of you.

Now off to the Weekly Hot Picks! Here’s a nice little quick nugget; Did you know it’s been over 5 years straight of the Weekly Comic Hot Picks in the magazine and InvestComics.com combined?!

DC Comics; Supergirl #60 gets a new creative team. Artist Bernard Chang (Superman, Wonder Woman), and writer Nick Spencer of the wildly super hot series Morning Glories! A new and very cool animated series will coming out called Young Justice. Check out the first comic based off of this soon to be hit cartoon. Have to mention that Tony Daniels cover for Batman #706. That’s super cool.

ironman500

Marvel; Amazing Spider-Man #652 brings back an old foe Alistair Smythe, a.k.a. Spider-Slayer. Check out Slayers first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19 (1985).  You probably could find this comic lying around in some $1 bin at your local comic book convention. Iron Man celebrates his anniversary issue with issue #500. Anniversary issues usually don’t fare that well in the aftermarket, so don’t look for the “regular issue” to command much on ebay, except for the variant from Joe Quesada. A steep $130 at some comic shops makes this a rare and hard book to get.

Independents; 3 books are highlighted this week. 27 #1 sold out quickly, so a second print variant will be hitting the shelves this week. Also check out Image Comics Memoir #1, a very interesting looking book with John Cassaday’s name attached to it, and Boys reaches its milestone 50th issue.
