Another week, another S.H.I.E.L.D. Number one comic. This week its Cavalry S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1. Melinda May’s first appearance was in SDCC Agents of Shield #1 (2014).

The Dark Horse Colder Toss The Bones #1 cover reminds us very much of the original Colder #1 cover, doesn’t it? It’s not a bad thing, it just brought the brain right back to that cover. That all said, the volume 1 number one is a nicer (grosser) than the new Wednesday release.

Must read this week, Valiant Entertainment’s Book Of Death The Fall Of Harbinger #1.

A few secrets to learn about and some revelations this Wednesday. This always makes for some great reading. Lets hope at least one of these comics gives us a “holy sh*t” moment.

Find out who the character Poison is in Hail Hydra #3. Poison first appeared in Web of Spider-Man Annual #4 (1988). Speaking about finding out things, learn more about a new character in Riverdale; Archie #3. The Fiona Staples cover is the best of the bunch. It’s actually the “regular” cover, the rest are variants.
A big reveal (secret) will be uncovered regarding Howard The Duck in S.H.I.E.L.D. #10 and learn where Green Lantern got his new look from in Green Lantern Annual #4.

The Chair #1 from Alterna Comics is sold out. Apparently this comic is due for a movie release in 2016. No Ebay listing’s of this comic as of the release of this article.

Writer/artist Joe St. Pierre is consistently introducing new characters each and every new issue of The New Zodiax. The New Zodiax #4 is no different. Read the best kept indie comic secret (for now) from Astronaut Ink.

An intriguing comic coming this week from Titan Comics; Bloodthirsty #1. Definitely worth a look.

The InvestComics Wristband Contest At New York Comic Con 2015. #InvestComicsNYCC

Buy a $1(Black) or $2 (Pink) wristband (purchase below) OR at select booths at NYCC, wear it at the NYCC 2015, find a member of the InvestComics team and you will get to select a graded comic for you to keep.

This October (8th-11th) at the Javits Center in New York, InvestComics fans will seek out a member of the InvestComics team at the New York Comic Con 2015 (wearing their black or Pink wristband) in the greatest (and FIRST) comic book website manhunt ever; to win a graded comic book of their choice! Each day of the show will give fans a chance to win. Which means one wrist band equals 9 graded comics to choose from to win.

IC BAND COMIC

Here’s how you participate: You can purchase your black or Pink InvestComics wristband at the website www.investcomics.com for $1 each (plus shipping) or $2 (Pink) (plus shipping) AND at NYCC, more on that in a bit. Fans can purchase more than one wristband if they’d like. It doesn’t mean if you wear more bands you may find us better, it means you purchase more bands and give them to your friends to seek us out too! Wristbands will also be available at the NYCC for purchase for $1 or $2 each. InvestComics has partnered up with a few booths (maybe more, we’ll announce) at the show to carry the wristbands. They will be limited, so get there quickly if you need to purchase any. The booths will be; Valiant Entertainment (Booth 1635), Comicxposure (Booth 562), Creature Entertainment (Booth 1171), Cosmic Times (Booth 1367), Unstoppable Comics (Booth 938), and Royal Collectables (Booth 2922) Walk up to any of these booths and ask to buy a wristband for the InvestComics Manhunt Contest.

***The Valiant Entertainment team will have a special running at their booth. Buy any 5 vol 1. trades for $30!

***The Comicxposure team says that if a fan purchases an InvestComics wristband at their booth, you will get $5 off any variant!

How to play: The InvestComics team will be at the show all four days; Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each day the Manhunt will begin at a specific time. The coverage space for the hunt will be anywhere INSIDE the NYCC. Time is limited, so hunt us down!

Thursday October 8th: 4:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Friday October 9th: 5:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Saturday October 10th: 5:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Sunday October 11th: 4:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Once the clock strikes the particular time, the manhunt to find an InvestComics team member will begin. Each member will be wearing an official InvestComics t-shirt (like the one pictured below). Once a contestant finds a member, show us you are wearing your wristband, we will record the exact time (stop watches set together) and head back to base. We will call ahead to see if any other members are on the way back. If so, we will compare times to see who officially won the right to select their graded comic.

IC Crew

As each Graded comic goes off the board we will send an alert via Social Media as to who won (The winners picture of course) and what comic they selected.

The Rules: As with every contest there must be rules.

  1. If you are caught trailing(following) us before the bell sounds on a particular day, you will be automatically disqualified and ineligible to participate in the contest on any given day(s) left.
  2. Once you choose a graded comic, your picture will be taken and blasted via social media. You cannot under any circumstance change your mind and want a different comic thereafter.
  3. You cannot win more than once. If you bought a band for a friend and they find us, then they get a picture and they can do with the graded comic as they wish (give it to you).
  4. The contest takes place ONLY inside the NYCC. Meaning if the time starts and you find an InvestComics team member outside the boundaries of the NYCC you cannot claim your prize.
  5. A claimant cannot claim their prize inside the press area or right outside of it.
  6. If a graded comic goes unclaimed, it will remain in the mix for a person to choose in the next phase (day). A person will not have an option of taking two comics.
  7. No affiliate or team member of InvestComics is eligible in this contest. This includes any involvement of parties in this contest.

*InvestComics reserves the right to alter the contest in any way from now until the dates of the actual show.

*We reserve the right to cancel the contest at any given time in which each participate will be refunded their monies spent in the contest.

  • Valiant Entertainment (Booth 1635) Cosmic Times (Booth 1367), Comicxposure (Booth 562), Unstoppable Comics (Booth 938), Creature Entertainment (Booth 1171), and Royal Collectables (Booth 2922) will possess absolutely no graded comics in this contest at their booths. They do not have any involvement/affiliation with InvestComics and nor are they responsible whatsoever of anything pertaining to the contest. Their main and only priority is to provide an outlet to purchase an InvestComics.com wristband. Any person(s) giving any sort of grievance to any of these companies of any kind will be automatically disqualified.

These articles focus on comics that no one is talking about or speculating on anymore. Mostly for good reason though. There are some hidden gems among the non-elite here, but with that said these comics have been long forgotten and simply not thought of by many collectors. Most of the comics in the article here are comics to be found in long box sales, but so much fun nonetheless. Some are actually a little tough to hunt down and worth some extra cash in the aftermarket, but isn’t the hunt always more fun? If interested in any of these comics, most can be found by clicking the red links provided in this article or comic cover, that’s if you don’t feel like hunting them down or you simply cannot find it. Will any of these comics ever be of monetary value? Or have a resurgence? Probably not, but with the influx of television and movies these days you never know. Here are a few InvestComics oddities to check out. Enjoy and happy hunting/reading!

Avengers Icons: The Vision (2002) A four issue mini-series written by Geoff Johns and art by Ivan Reis. What is there not to love about this? A great story here. Needs to be in your collection today.

Warlock Special Edition (1982) Can’t afford or find the early Warlock stories from Strange Tales? How about an awesome six part reprint series? Jim Starlin provides new covers. And with Warlock rumored to debut in the Marvel Cinematic universe eventually, these books will be in demand even though they are reprints.

The Black Dragon (1985) This long forgotten sword and sorcery series was brought to you by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Bolton. Great stuff here.

Tigra (2002) Why hasn’t Tigra become an Avenger in the movies? Too campy maybe? But so cool though. This forgotten series was penciled by Mike Deodato Jr (and covers). Written by Christina Z.

Claws (2006) This series had smash hit written all over it. It did okay for its time, but no one remembers it today. Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. Art and covers by Joseph Michael Linsner.

Alex Segura: Archie Comics

InvestComics recently had the privilege to interview the Senior Vice President of Publicity and Marketing at Archie Comics and Editor of Dark Circle Comics; Mr. Alex Segura.

With Archie Comics constantly breaking down barriers, breaking new ground with tremendous story lines, and starting up their new Dark Circle imprint, it was definitely time to break bread with Mr. Segura!

Dark_Circle_Comics_Archie_Comics

Jay Katz: Alex, you were with DC Comics for quite some time. When you made the switch to Archie Comics, did you even envision; a gay character, Archie zombie’s, the death of Archie, etc.?

Alex Segura: Archie’s really come a long way in terms of being relevant, vibrant and timely – so I’m excited for the future of the company. It all points back to Jon Goldwater, our Publisher/Co-CEO. His vision for the company has really brought Archie and his friends into the 21st century. It’s amazing to see.

Death_of_ArchieJK: Archie Comics has the stigma of being for “kids”. Although Archie has maintained their mantra for carrying comics for the younger audience, why do you feel they have explored so many different areas that may be a bit off center for the company?

AS: I wouldn’t call that a stigma – kids comics are hugely important, and Archie is what got me into the medium. I think kids comics are integral to keeping the next generation interested in comics and what we do.

That being said, Archie as a character is supremely flexible, similar to Batman. You can see him in different settings and situations and still know who he is and his world, which allows for really creative interpretations, like Afterlife or Life with Archie.

JK: So Archie Comics have made a big announcement and from the looks of the reception so far, looks like you have a win here. Tell us about the Archie imprint; Dark Circle Comics!

AS: Well, Dark Circle Comics is Archie’s superhero imprint, and we’re relaunching three key titles early next year – The Black Hood, The Fox and The Shield, with some amazing talent. The response has been really positive, and I’m excited to be working with people like Dean Haspiel, Mark Waid, Duane Swierczynski, Michael Gaydos, Adam Christopher and Chuck Wendig. We’re trying to really boil these books down to what make these characters great and bring a more novelistic and literary feel to the books, so it’s less about continuity and history but more about story and what’s coming up, while still respecting the past.

darkcircleJK: What can fans expect to see as far as storytelling with the edger tone?

AS: I think fans can expect these books to be about the creators’ vision for these properties – it’s really the Afterlife model expanding into there Archie properties, where you get great creators and let them cut loose and really do what they do best.

JK: So we will see heroes and villains from the Red Circle imprint. Will they be completed updated as far as appearance? What about their origins?

AS: It depends. Everything’s on the table. I think you’ll see some characters that are completely different while others are closer to their original incarnations. It really depends on what works best for the current story.

JK: Will we see new heroes/villains introduced into the fray?

AS: Yes, definitely. We want to reimagine the core characters and also introduce new properties.

JK: What about creators? Will be see the awesome Archie family on some books, like Dan Parent, Dan DeCarlo? How about creators from the big two?

AS: We’re talking to a lot of talented people – but it’s too early to announce any more of the lineup. But we do have some big announcements planned once we launch the first wave, so stay tuned.

Keller_xmen_variantJK: Besides giving comic fans some great content with the new imprint, do you foresee a possibility of getting some Dark Comics characters to film or television?

AS: I’d love that. We’ll see what the response is like to the books once they’re out.

JK: What can you tell the fans that might be on the fence about Dark Circle Comics?

AS: If you like shows from HBO, FX or AMC – really curated and thoughtful programming that focuses on character, story and drama, then these books will be in your wheelhouse. We’re respecting the past but aren’t beholden to it, and we’re trying to remind people why these characters are great without using continuity as a crutch. You don’t need to have read anything before THE BLACK HOOD #1 or THE FOX #1!, etc. The launch issues will be perfect jumping on points.

JK: When will we see some teasers? Fans love the tease you know!

AS: You’ll see some new art and news in advance of NYCC.

sonicthehedgehog_264JK: Where can we follow the latest about Dark Circle Comics?

AS: You can find us on Twitter, Facebook and darkcirclecomics.com.

Thanks for chatting with me!

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 8/20/14

IMG_0956InvestComics is at the ComiCONN in Connecticut this weekend. You should really hop on over to the InvestComics Instagram to check out the very cool images from the show. There is some awesome cosplay and so much more. Look for more pics to appear on the actual InvestComics site later. Special thanks goes out to the InvestComics VP Rafael Rosario (@ratchetcitycomics) for holding up the fort at the show.  His north east coverage this year has been outstanding.

Next stop; Baltimore Con and the New York Comic Con. We’re looking forward to those!

Not much in the way of the speculation market this week, but plenty of new reads. Now is a good time to get your inventory in order and look for those back issues you have been putting off. But, we can start fun speculation mayhem if you’d want to be a part of it! Details below……!

[scrollGallery id=366]

The spec market possibly turns your two purchases of $3.50 and $3.99 into the black with Fade Out (2014 Image) #1 and  Delinquents (2014 Valiant) #1. Fade Out #1 is already sold out as I knew it would be. It’s a new story written by the awesome Ed Brubaker told in the noir style genre. Image Comics and Mr. Brubaker are possibly doing some foreshadowing with the release of the Fade Out #1 movie magazine sized variant, which also happens to be sold out. What does this all mean really? Nothing if the story doesn’t hold up or we get delays with the issue releases. Otherwise, there will be a quick spike in the aftermarket with this title. The magazine variant is an odd approach though. Will comic speculators embrace it? We will see. As for Delinquents #1, Valiant may have a home run on their hands here. The wildly popular Quantum and Woody team up with Archer and Armstrong. The comic right now is showing some nice sales and will eventually sell out. However, with that said, the new Valiant comics aren’t really a high priced turnover marketable seller. Maybe this comic will be a part of the scarce few that have made a bump in the aftermarket. A nice $50 variant sits out there. A big risk for the speculator here. The only way to possibly make a turnover on this comic would be to get it signature series graded. It must pull a 9.8 or higher to make any sort of money here. A higher risk than I personally would take. So the Fade Out #1 from Image Comics would be the better buy of the two here by a large margin. Do know this though; Delinquents #1 will be a stellar read.

Enormous from 215 Ink continues to do well. Enormous (2014) Ongoing #3 is sold out. That makes three sell outs in a row.

Little Nemo Return to Slumberland (2014 IDW) #1 looks like a winner from IDW as does Giant Robot Warrior Maintenance Crew (2014) #1 from Cosmic Times.

Here are the rest you should check out at your local comic shop this week; Dark Horse Presents (2014 3rd Series) #1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014 IDW) Annual #1, Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman (2014) #1, Super Secret Crisis War Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (2014) #1, and Steampunk Battlestar Galactica 1880 (2014 Dynamite) #1.

The_New_Teen_Titans_16….And then there is Multiversity (2014 DC) #1. Legend Grant Morrison is at the helm here, teaming up with the top artist in the industry to bring us “the biggest adventure in DC history”.  While I personally was never a big fan of the convoluted superheroes from different universes within the Multiverse; Superman Earth 23, or Flash Earth 18, or Earth this or that, I can’t help but to peg one character that peeks my interest in this new comic. Captain Carrot. Yes that’s right. Supposedly Captain Carrot will get a makeover as we’d never expect. That to me sounds like fun! Not the bazillion different confusing heroes from all of these various places, but Captain Carrot! Let’s get the buzz going with The New Teen Titans #16 (1982), the first appearance of Captain Carrot written by legend Roy Thomas. Let the world know that InvestComics started the momentum, the demand for The New Teen Titans #16 and that we want more Captain Carrot!

Invest wisely.

As I end each and every week with the words “Carpe Diem”, condolences to the Robin Williams family. Even the ever growing and popular InvestComics Facebook Group page was named “Investing in Comic books 101 (IC Poet Society)”.  You were an obvious influence. You will be missed.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/30/14

Lots of cool news coming out of the San Diego Con this week. One of the biggest relates to the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie. That’s right, part 2 announced before part one even hits the screen. That’s quite brazen to say the least. By August 8th the Guardians of the Galaxy movie better have a strong showing and not fall on its face a week after its opening. We hope for the best here, but announcing a sequel to a movie that hasn’t even been released takes some brass ones, we know it’ll do well, right? Right?

Before we get to the short week, we’d like to point out a very big contest that was announced a few days ago on InvestComics. If you are a cosplayer and will be visiting the New York area (or live within the area) in October for the New York Comic Con, you need to enter this contest. A 4 day Press Pass is up for grabs. Click right HERE to check out the details.

Two comics are in for easy picking’s as far as the spec world is concerned. Low (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at Diamond and there is lots of chatter about how good this one is. You best be on this one. As for the second obvious pick up this week? How about Outcast (2014 Image) #2? Outcast has movie talks all over it already. Seems a bit ridiculous to have only one comic out and it’s getting optioned already. But that’s neither here nor there, what is not ridiculous is the money to possibly make back for your $3.99 investment. Outcast #2 is sold out. Outcast is from Robert Kirkman. He does some zombie book that has seen some success (insert dripping sarcasm there). If you see Outcast #2 on the self, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Harley Quinn (2013) #8 will have a new gang called Scatapult appearing. Chew Warrior Chicken Poyo (2014) #1 will bring back the Poyo from the Chew series once again. Poyo first appeared in Chew #8 (2010). This comic is all but gone at the distributor.

With that movie coming out this Friday. You know the one with the sequel already, 100th Anniversary Special Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) #1 will show some good sales. It also has an appearance by Silver Galactus? Is this a first appearance? If anyone knows different, please let us know. Thanks in advance!

A few books to definitely check out this week….. ComixTribe may have another hit on their hands. And Then Emily Was Gone (2014) #1 is sold out. Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #1 is just about there on the sold out front.

Bodies (2014 Vertigo) #1 and In the House of the Worm (2014) #1 look like fantastic reads. You should check out these as well.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

About InvestComics:

InvestComics started as a magazine in 2006; the first issue wasn’t released until June of 2007. The magazine was distributed as a free comic book Investment Guide throughout local comic shops in South Florida. It was also a giveaway on Ebay for any winning bid to receive with their order.

Although the InvestComics web site was on line in 2005, it wasn’t until 2007 the web site became the main focal point and the magazine ceased. InvestComics wanted to start reaching a broader audience and began to rapidly expand. InvestComics became the “Entertainment” Investment Guide as a result of covering many areas in the industry, focusing on entertainment as well as highlighting investment opportunities.

Michael D’Alessio of ACBC

ACBC_2015_Atlantic_City_HOT

From the AC Broadwalk Con Facebook page: *AC BOARDWALK CON (ACBC for short) is a BRAND NEW CONVENTION in ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY! With over 300,000 square feet of floor space, 40+ panel/theatre rooms, ACBC will bring to NJ a Con that will put FANS FIRST at every touchpoint*

ACBC_2015Michael D’Alessio is the creator of the AC Broadwalk Con in Atlantic City New Jersey (May 14-17 2014). With Michael’s very busy schedule, he was kind enough to sit down for a few questions with InvestComics to talk about the awesome show/ plans/guest he has on tap for the ACBC.

Hello Michael, thanks for stopping by InvestComics.

(InvestComics): So first thing first Michael. Tell us a bit about yourself.

(Michael D’Alessio): I’ve been a comic/superhero fan since I was 4 years old, growing up watching The Superfriends, Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman, Hulk, Isis & Shazam Power Hour, etc.  I’m 41 now, and when I meet any of the actors from these series I tell them that THEY made me want to work in this industry, and that without them embodying my comics, I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career and my life.

(Atlantic_City_ACBCIC): What made you decide on the Atlantic City location for your show?

(M): I was kicking around the idea for the show all of 2013. I get to go to most of the larger shows in the country and overseas as I own a marketing agency with the majority of our clients in the comic/movie/gaming industry. I just never understood why New Jersey never had a major show. I was chatting with one of my best friends who is a casual fan, and I said I want to do a comic con style show, but not a comic con per se. I was kicking around “A” named cities and he said, Atlantic City. It was genius. I live in New Jersey on the Shore. I love my state. Why not? Plus, AC is a 6 hour drive to over 40% of the US population, so it makes sense.

(IC): You recently launched the ACBC website. Congrats! Is there a signup there yet for fans?

(M): Yes, there’s a space on the bottom for fans to sign up and make comments. This site is our Phase 1. Phase 2 which is more robust is launching in March. Same look.  Same feel. More “meat” to it. We also have our facebook.com/acboardwalkcon which allows us to really interact with the fans. And of course, Twitter.

(IC): There is one thing that jumps out right away about the AC Boardwalk Con, the 4 day schedule. By design, did you originally set out to maximize the awesomeness? And what will separate the ACBC from other Comic Conventions?

(M): We’re actually interested in doing it for 5 days in 2016! Here’s my take on it. As a marketer who designs, builds and in some instances hosts major booths at SDCC, NYCC, C2E2, PAX, etc., I know that the exhibitors want to bring their “A” game to shows, but sometimes for a 2-day show that’s just not possible. So I had that in mind. Also, for fans who want to fly in (and we’re pulling people already not just from our region, but all over the country, Canada, Mexico, Europe and even Japan), we don’t want them to come for a 2 day show. We also didn’t want to create a show that’s in a seminar room of a hotel. We went the convention center route because, quite honestly, it NEEDS to be held there to accommodate and allow for exhibitors and fans to interact properly.

As of now, We have a teaser opening on Thursday (7 pm – 2 AM) but we may end up opening all day on Thursday if demand is there. I have a feeling, even 17 months out, that it will be. We’re getting tremendous interest in the show.

ACBC_Spidey

(IC): Being this is your first show Michael, for many people in the market thinking about putting a show together, what resistance/obstacles if any have you encountered or advice do you have for them?

(M): Well, it’s our first show as Show Management. But we have some great advantages. Being that we’ve been so active with major exhibitors (Marvel, 2K Games, Boom! Studios, etc.) for so many years, we know the ins and outs of the show management teams we’ve worked with at Comic-Con International and Reed Pop. We have fantastic relationships with them, and with other shows such as Wizard, GamesCom, etc. So, we knew what we were going into better than I assume most do.

The other advantage we have is all of the learnings that we have under our belts from clients that are demanding (In a good way!) and won’t settle for mediocrity. That allows us to know that we cannot put on a “shoot from the hip” show. We know that excellence is the level we much achieve from a visual/aesthetic stand point, as well as from an infrastructure stand point. Additionally, we’ve been blessed to get to know the fans on a VERY interpersonal level at shows.  The fans… I mean… they’re just the best.  So we have heard for years what they want, and what frustrates them, what excites them, etc. This gives us definitely a guiding light and it’s at the precipice of all of our show designs.

(IC): Who would you say is the one person that you’d love to have as a guest?

(M): Lynda Carter. Hands Down.  It’s no secret I’m probably the biggest Wonder Woman fan next to Phil Jimenez, so it may seem a little selfish. But in reality, it’s because SHE was the one actress/actor who, to a young boy, really brought the comics to life. And my second major guest, Chris Hemmsworth. I’ve been lucky enough to work with him at the Marvel booth. The man is one of the nicest person I’ve ever worked with and to me, he’s Thor. I can’t imagine anyone else in that role (and Thor is my third favorite hero of all time).

Cosplay(IC): Speaking of guest, the show isn’t until May of 2015. Can you give us a tease of a few guest you have on board? Will the Donald make an appearance?!

(M): Well… I DID do an appearance on 2 of THE APPRENTICE shows, so I’m sure I can reach out to him. (And I definitely give him my fair share of money at The Taj Mahal Casino!). We do have some guests confirmed, but I want to be clear. It’s a FANTASTIC mix.  This show is an amalgamation of comics, gaming, cosplay, horror and all things geek. Our guests will be pulled from those realms.  If you’re at the pinnacle of cosplay… we’ll be talking to you.  If you’re a programmer/developer for games, trust me, you’re being contacted. Thankfully, after 20+ years in the entertainment marketing industry, I have a lot of contacts, as does my staff, so we can get to the people we want to.

(IC): Do you find that fans are requesting a certain guest more so than others? Like say Stan Lee?

(M): Stan Lee. Stan Lee. Stan Lee. I hear the chants in my head all day long. We love Stan. He’s a great guy. I’ve worked with him for over 8 years. Here’s a quick story about my show and Stan…

I was talking to one of Stan’s staff in the green room at NYCC. Max and I were talking about my show and how I want to make it different, etc. Stan was relaxing before having to appear on stage. He called me over to him and asked me to tell him about the show. He listened to my ideas. Gave me a few insights and told me that any way he can help me he will. THAT’S the way the man is. He’s just that great.

(IC): Besides the website, where else can fans find out about the latest news and happenings regarding the AC Boardwalk Con?

(M): Our Facebook is facebook.com/acboardwalkcon We tend to post about the show, industry news, etc.  Plus we love the interaction on there.  Our Twitter is twitter.com/acboardwalkcon or @Acboardwalkcon

(IC): You’ve mentioned Master Classes and such on your Facebook page. Can you elaborate?

(M): Our panel rooms are going to be set up like a university. Think along the lines of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. We’ll have 100 level, 200 level, 300 level, 400 level and Master Classes. The 100 level may have a class: Basics of Drawing faces and bodies. 200 level may have: Scripting for Video Gaming. 300 level could include: Creating a sewing pattern for superhero costumes. 400 level most certainly would include a class on Storyboarding for Comics. Then the Master Classes. These are hosted by masters in our industries. We’re working with industry leaders to host the classes that would really showcase their skills, such as if Phil Jimenez was to teach a Master Class on Sequential Drawing for Comics or such. We’re asking ALL of our exhibitors to host at least 1 Master Class. We have over 40 rooms available for classes, so we expect to have a lot going on.

Additionally, when you attend one of the classes, you’ll receive a Con Pin. They’re kind of like credits in a university. Each one is a different color for each level class. They’re autographed by the host of the class, and we have a secret, yet really cool, payoff that’s based on how many Con Pins (credits) you complete.

(IC): Last question, have to ask! Since this is a relatively heavy investment/speculator website, what book do you own in your personal collection holds the greatest value monetarily? Don’t worry no one knows where you live.

(M): All of them. Sorry not being coy. But I LOVE my books. I have so many comic books I’ve had to start buying online mostly now due to space issues. But I wouldn’t sell any of them for anything. They are the stories of my friends.

That said… I DO have quite a few signed books, and well, I had an honor a few years back. Gail Simone wrote me into her run of Wonder Woman and used my likeness as one of Diana Prince’s team members, a “sharp shooter who shoots first and asks questions later”. I DO have that framed and up on the wall. That meant the world to me.

My art is just as important. I have so many pieces from Choice Collectibles, originals pencils and paint by Alex Ross (from Justice), original Terry Dodson covers, original JG Jones pages from Hiketia, etc. I love comic art tremendously!

Thanks for stopping by Michael. We’ll see you in AC in 2015!

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release 10-30-13

[scrollGallery id=316]

There was a comic book run that basically changed the landscape of comic books as we know them some 24 years ago. That comic book run was DC’s (Vertigo) Sandman from 1989. The ebb and flow of storytelling in comic books were changed forever in 1989. This was due for the reason of one man, Neil Gaiman. Neil is a storyteller; he has a pulse on what the reader yearns for. He sets moods, changes, flow and so much more. There are not enough words to describe this man’s legendary status. And quite frankly he doesn’t need words; he’s done enough for himself to establish his legend status in the comic book genre and in the publishing world as well. This week Neil visits familiar territory. Yes that’s right you guessed it, Sandman. Sandman Overture (2013) #1 will probably not break new ground, but what it will do is spark the interest of readers and collectors alike. Then again, maybe it will break new ground? Who knows with Mr. Gaiman? Here’s the nuts and bolts here folks, DC has spoken of Vertigo titles making it onto the big screen for a while now. What better way to start than right here, with Neil Gaiman’s Sandman? There have been many predictions within the InvestComics Hot Picks that have come to fruition (some not too), but to say that Sandman will definitely make it to a movie theater is not that far of a stretch, but it WILL happen. Sandman will become a film one day, and not only will it be spectacular, it will send the aftermarket into an absolute frenzy. This is why a collector should be on top on the 1989 Sandman #1 comic right now. Another book to be on top of is the Sandman Overture #1 variant from Dave McKean, a cool $125 for that variant, but can easily double with a 9.8 grade, and triple with a signature series. Not only will the Sandman Overture #1 heighten the interest of the already famous 1989 book, the movie to come will catapult it even more so. Thank me later. Don’t forget to let everyone know that InvestComics alerted you out on this one.

The recent “demise” of Damian was short lived and now the character has his own book coming out! Death in comics really doesn’t mean much, but you know this already. Anyways, Damian Son of Batman (2013) #1 will bring back the son of Bruce for a limited series, and then for sure a regular series down the line we’re guessing. Whether you’re a fan or not of the Damian character, one will have to stand up a bit and pay attention here. The character is a hot commodity, the collector should embrace this. The reader should just ignore him if they aren’t interested. The collector’s battle over the true first appearance of Damian rages on behind the scenes, but here’s the skinny. The only true answer lies within the money if you’re a speculator. The birth of Damian happened in Batman: Son of a Demon #1 in 1988 (not in DC continuity? Then maybe it is?), but according to the folks at CGC, they say that Batman #655 (2006) is the recognized cameo of Damian. The first full appearance of Damian is Batman #656. So with that, regardless of how the argument may want to flow, CGC is setting the precedence on the Batman comics #655 and #656 as the cameo and first, and this is where the money is going to be found because of the little inscription on the top of the casing. Buy the first Damian. It’s an uptick comic for years to come. Oh yes, one last thing. Pick up the Damian Son of Batman #1 Andy Kubert sketch variant at $60, grade it make money, simple as that. And finally from DC Comics this week, Forever Evil Argus (2013) #1 is sold out. The Forever Evil campaign continues to kill it on the shelves, well semi-disappear really. As the previous InvestComics Hot Picks have stated with the Forever Evil storyline, unless there is a major holy sh*t moment that really takes the genre by surprise, there will be no redeeming value (speculator) in any of the Forever Evil titles down the line. The true redeeming value here is a fantastic storyline.

Damian first appearance

Marvel Comics stays busy this week with comics like Captain America Living Legend (2013) #2. This book will introduce an alien like thing. Not sure exactly what, but check it out. And look at that awesome cover too! Dan Slott promises that the new Superior Spider-Man (2012) #20 will seriously shake things up. As if things haven’t been shaken already?! Be sure to grab a copy to see how things are playing out. Another shake up looks to be occurring in Guardians of the Galaxy (2013 3rd Series) #8. Peter Quill will betray the entire Marvel Universe? Okay we’re interested. Cataclysm (2013 Marvel) #0.1 would be nice to write about, but the Marvel solicit is “classified”. The variant is sold out though, know that much! The new Bryan J.L. Glass Thor Crown of Fools (2013) #1 will be sold out on Thursday. Be sure to have your copy in hand or in your pull box.

Ash and the Army of Darkness return this week in Ash and the Army of Darkness (2013) #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Talks of a new movie will boost interest for the original Ash and the Army of Darkness #1 from 1992. That’s 21 years ago. Feel old yet? The comic is mostly sold out across the board. Archie Comics had a huge success with the recent Archie zombie book Afterlife with Archie #1 (InvestComics informed that you’d get the variants, hope you did!). So what’s next to come you may ask? How about Fox (2013 Red Circle) #1? Yep, the Fox is running amuck and its best you catch it! Preferably the variant! Fox #1 is another hot comic folks. Don’t believe it? Check by Friday and see if there are any variants left for you. Oh yes, check Ebay on those, they’ll be over there probably. Incidentally, in case anyone is interested. Fox first appeared in Blue Ribbon Comics #4 way back in 1940. Good luck ever seeing that comic in your lifetime in near mint condition or in your lifetime period. There are a few comics that should be on your radar due to the low number left or their sold out status. Wildwork (2013 Antarctic Press) #1, Adventure Time Spoooktacular (2013) #1,and Wilder (2013 Monsterverse) #0.

Amazing artist Marc Silvestri pays homage to himself this week with the cover on Witchblade (1995) #170. If the cover doesn’t ring a bell (How could it not??!!), it’s original concept cover was featured on the Uncanny X-Men #251 with Wolverine stuck on the X and not a W. Awesome cover on both Marc!! See below to marvel in the beauty.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to share InvestComics across the social media because not only is it cool to do, but you can win some awesome prizes too! Batman The Dark Knight #23.4 Joker’s Daughter #1 SIGNED by artist Georges Jeanty and Excalibur #1 SIGNED by legend Chris Claremont!!

WWE Studio’s at New York Comic Con 2013

WWE Studios

InvestComics sits down with WWE stars Kane and Hornswoggle at the New York Comic Con. We also sat down with director’s and the President of WWE Studios……

WWE Studio’s will be releasing more films with their WWE Stars as the headliners. Make no mistake here, this is an absolutely brilliant move for the WWE brand. They have a bevy of characters at their disposal within their arsenal. Putting them front and center in movie roles as various characters other than the ones they play week in and week out on television and pay-per-view will prove to be a success. Two movies discussed on the video below are See No Evil, directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska (also seen on the video) and  Leprechaun: Origins directed by Zach Lipovsky (also seen on the video). The president of WWE Studio’s is also seen on the video.

Fun time had by all! And check out what Glenn “Kane” Jacobs thinks about the government shut down.

Remember, go see See No Evil 2 and  Leprechaun: Origins!!

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for New Comic Releases on 10-23-13

New York Comic Con 2013 rundown: (don’t fret, InvestComics Hot Picks below too!)

Back from the New York Comic Con! Another year in the books, and boy was this year’s show spectacular. InvestComics along with Rafael Rosario of RatchetCity Comics dominated the floor with images, as well as come away with a few interviews. Interviews with the creative team of the hit animated series on Fox Bob’s Burgers, Late night host Pete Holmes (TBS), WWE stars Kane and Hornswoggle, WWE studio president Michael Luisi, Directors Jen and Sylvia Soska, Animal Planets’ Finding Bigfoot cast, and the SECOND (with a microphone this time!) interview with Stan “the man” Lee!! Yes it was a great time to say the least.

InvestComics put together a short video montage of various awesome photos taken by Rafael Rosario (with some bad photos taken by yours truly!). Many of the photos in the video do not give the viewer a “full display” of the picture. So there will be a post on InvestComics with a gallery of full displayed images coming soon. Until then, check out the video below. Some of the cosplay this year was simply outstanding. If you see someone you may know in the video, please share it with them.

[bliptv AYOXlRIA.x?p]

The crowds were plentiful as always at the show. Expansion will probably happen again either next year or shortly thereafter. The show itself is definitely becoming the San Diego Comic Con on the east coast. It’s more about the glitz and glamour of the media world rather than the comics themselves mostly. Yes the Image Comics/Marvel Comics booths were absolutely a mad house as they always are, but no signs of an actual “mad house” around the comic book booths tucked away in 3 aisles if that many. The comic booths did have some traffic, but it was nowhere as near as it was everywhere else. Yes the media outlets have taken over, and that’s okay too because it gives the comic book world extra juice. Especially small media…..

Small publishing media were doing their thing too! Creature Entertainment was constantly busy, as were their neighbor Cosmic Times. Be sure to look for those publishers at your local show, they are always making their rounds in the circuit. Our pals at Unstoppable Comics were doing very well as we checked in from time to time, as was our bud, our favorite colorist Jeff Balke! Jeff Kaufman of Big City Comics Studio was drawing all sorts of attention with his stellar graphic novel Angel Falling and his Whore book. And our friend; media mogul, owner of Hound Comics Brimstone was uber busy signing and making appearances everywhere. All and all, it was a busy show for everyone.

One of the more puzzling questions at the New York Comic Con this year; what happened to DC??! Yes DC Comics were nowhere to be found. Yes they had their little signing area WAY in the back area in artist alley, but no booth?? Very odd. Many fans were perplexed by this move. DC however, did have the “75 Years of Superman” display in the court by the coat and luggage check! Displayed in glass cases were all of the Superman costumes worn throughout the years from various Superman movies. Once you were over the amazement and coolness of it, it quickly became, “that’s it?” DC dropped the ball here. They could have had various Superman creators along with the displays present. It would have been a nice token/gesture to recognize the artist and writers of the past that have worked on making the Superman comic throughout the years. Have a free giveaway comic, have them sign it or talk to fans, take pictures. It’s quite absurd that Neal Adams (and many others) were sitting in the next room and he (they) weren’t sitting there for a little while to honor this momentous occasion. Rant TWDJokers_Daugtherover!

InvestComics got a hold of some very rare Walking Dead variants from the Image Comics booth. The Walking Dead #1 New York Comic Con variant has a print run of only 2000!! If you’re interested in buying one, you can head over to the InvestComics Ebay page right HERE and bid away! Remember only 2000 of these exist! Rare indeed.

Before heading off to New York Comic Con, InvestComics released our first ever InvestComics Publications comic The Dawning #1 by David Whalen. There have been many sales of the book and we will be shipping them out this week. So if you ordered please be patient. Thanks! Oh and just in case you missed the ordering details, click right HERE to order now!

Also before heading off to New York, InvestComics announced a new contest to win a  SIGNED Chris Claremont Excalibur #1! That’s right, legend Chris Claremont! If that doesn’t entice you, how about this? How about your chance to grab one of the hottest books out right now signed by the artist? How about Batman The Dark Knight #23.4 Joker’s Daughter #1 SIGNED by artist Georges Jeanty?!! Yes this comic can be WON by YOU! Share the InvestComics website/Facebook/Twitter/Instagram and all other social media anywhere and you will be entered to win! Be sure to (hashtag) #investcomics when you share. Each contest is separate though, The Excalibur and the Batman comic, so be sure to specify which comic you are after! Also alert InvestComics via Facebook or Twitter or here that you shared!

Onward we go!!

InvestComics Hot Picks for Comic Releases 10-23-13

So you missed that number one issue that InvestComics recommended you pick up. What were you thinking?! So now the question you may ask is what’s worse than a number one issue selling out and missing it? Well a number two issue selling out and missing it! Often times after a number one sells out, the interest tends to make the second issue a sellout as well. The tricky part here is, will the second issue hold up the series or will fans toss it because the story simply is not enough for them to stick around. If the story holds up, then you are definitely onto something as far as the aftermarket is concerned. Case in point this week with Rat Queens (2013 Image) #2, Sex Criminals (2013) #2, and Other Dead (2013 IDW) #2. Image Comics are simply killing it. They have put out more aftermarket greatness in the past couple of years than many can count. They continue to do so this week with these releases. Do not get caught short here, especially with any of the hot books that contain any variants. Get the variants CGC graded (9.8 or better a must), signature series (9.8 or better a must), and sell them for double/triple the value easily.

[scrollGallery id=313]

While we are on topic of number two issues, what gives with DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe (2013) #2? A “Top Secret” black cover obviously reveals nothing and because of this it’s essentially sold out already? Justice League makes an appearance, but wow, it’s a He-Man comic and it’s sold out. Let that sink in folks. But with a legend writer Keith Giffen on the book, it makes sense too.

DC’s lone number one comic to make it to the Hot Picks this week is Beware The Batman (2013) #1. An all ages Batman comic that has the SOLD OUT sign up on the variant. No sold out sign for Marvel’s Marvel Now What (2013) #1, but a fun comic read nonetheless! Marvel will “change things FOREVER” in Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #17. The last part of the Secret Origin of Tony Stark storyline. And going back to DC, we have Justice League Dark (2011) #24 with the New Justice League Dark. Is that really the cover? The white sound? Hmmm, okay.

Samurai Jack makes his triumphant return in Samurai Jack (2013 IDW) #1. Jack’s first comic appearance came back in DC’s Samurai Jack Special #1 (2002). If the world is ready for Jack in a big way, the number one special will be……special.

Pretty Deadly (2013 Image) #1 and Velvet (2013 Image) #1, both from Image Comics are…..you guessed it, SOLD OUT! Velvet #1 includes writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting! Each week the same format rings true here; buy Image Comics. Be sure to stay on top of these Image Comics, it won’t be long before they open that huge movie studio and start cranking out these comics into cinema beauty. Hey, you never know!

Another zombie book will make its way into the comic book world this week. On the verge of a sellout, be sure to check out Zombie War (2013 IDW) #1. And Conan fans get a new book to read this week from awesome writer Fred Van Lente, Conan People of the Black Circle (2013 Dark Horse) #1.

See you next week! Don’t forget to hit that contest up! And sign up to the InvestComics newsletter too!

It’s that easy! Chris Claremont! Awesome!!

BULLETIN*****An important announcement will be forthcoming before we leave to New York, so stay close folks. The “Dawning” of a new era is coming……

Let’s head on over to the 3D-less Hot Picks this week shall we?

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Releases 10-9-13

[scrollGallery id=311]

There are a few comics to really keep your eyes peeled to this week. Captain America (2012 7th Series) #12 will bring the character known as Dr. Mindbubble. Yes that’s correct, Dr. Mindbubble. Okay so what’s in a name right? Hey it’s a first official appearance here, so we must take a looksee. Always nice to have intro’s within the pages of a Cap book. Afterlife With Archie (2013) #1 has created quite the buzz around the comic book scene. With the award winning talents of writer Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla, coupled with a zombie apocalypse, this new ongoing series (not for the Archie “kid readers”) is going to sell out quick. There will be variants of this comic available, be sure to grab them. The variants by the way are absolutely gorgeous.

Superman and Wonder Woman begin their romance novel/superhero comic with the Superman Wonder Woman (2013) #1 release. DC has done the unthinkable here folks!! Where’s Lois? Well welcome to the “real life”. Man gets famous; he wants the hottest chick on the block. Men are dogs aren’t they? Just kidding of course. But DC may have actually found a little niche with their experiment here. Why not put the most powerful superhero with the most powerful female hero and let the romance ensue. It may, may, may peek the interest of a “non” female reader to come along and pick this comic up. Fangirls and fanboys will pick this up regardless if it’s a decent story, but what about the elusive female readership that so many comic companies are trying to cater to? Well DC, you may have something here. Awesome stuff. The relationship between Supes and WW is essentially 66 years in the making. Better late than never right? They first met up in All-Star Comic #36 (1947). Good luck trying to snag that comic right now at a decent penny with all of the WW talk of possibly appearing in the new Superman/Batman movie. Oh and by the way, pick up the scarce variant black and white cover if you want to make a nice return on your dollar.

Major revelations are revealed in Batman Zero Year. Origins and a big surprise hits us in Batman (2011 2nd Series) #24. Pick that up, see if it’s a “holy sh*t!” moment or a “meh” moment. Our guess it’s going to be a “holy Batman!” Moment.

With every successful event comes the additional spin off books, case in point this week with Forever Evil Arkham War (2013) #1. Is it really necessary to have a separate Forever Evil campaign run through Arkham? Well maybe, but it kind of feels like a 3D moment doesn’t it? Cool, but why? Money that’s why! Duh! DC Comics striking while the iron is hot here with more Forever Evil comics. Probably a great, fun read, but unless there is a major wow moment going on in here or an intro, not much going on for this comic in the aftermarket.

Speaking of cashing in, this is great. Image Comics knows that the Walking Dead is their major moneymaker right? In Walking Dead (2003 Image) #115 Rick has declared “All Out War”, a 12 part storyline that starts this week. It’s one of the most dramatic event storylines to fill these pages in some time, if ever. That’s all well and good, right? So what shall they do to introduce a new major storyline like no other? How about 12 variant covers? That’s right, 12 covers…..wow. Cha-ching!

Image Comics comes at us with more great number one comics this week; Three (2013 Image) #1 and Rocket Girl (2013 Image) #1.

Coffin Hill (2013 DC/Vertigo) #1 will be another fantastic Vertigo comic probably. Death Sentence (2013 Titan Comics) #1 from Titan looks like a very interesting comic. Looks like a movie to come out of that someday possibly. Cryptozoic Man (2013 Dynamite) #1, already covered on Comic Book Men season II, look for more coverage on this comic in Comic Book Men season III. Horror comics are making a mild comeback and this week the much talked about (positive) Department of Monsterology (2013 Renegade Arts) #1 will be hitting the shelves. A few cool/fun comics to check out this week; Shaolin Cowboy (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Multiple Warheads Down Fall (2013) #0, and Marvel Universe Hulk Agents of Smash (2013) #1.

That’s it for this week. Don’t to enter the contest, LIKE/Follow InvestComics. New York Comic Con bound, see you in 2 weeks!

Marvel to reveal Bendis and Immonen’s TRIAL at NYCC

An image of the word TRIAL, that’s all Marvel offers up (for now) of the new (presumably mini)series by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen. The email says “the reveals begin” at New York Comic Con.

What does it mean? Let the speculation begin! The image says the reveal will take place at the  AMAZING X-MEN AND THE MARVEL UNIVERSE Panel, so, considering Bendis is helming ALL NEW and UNCANNY X-MEN, it could be X-related, and the fire motiff COULD hint of something Phoenix related. But, the MARVEL UNIVERSE aspect of the panel could make it about anything.

Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and 1821 Comics Romeo and Juliet: The War to debut at New York Comic Con

Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?- At Comic Con 2011
Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and 1821 Comics Romeo and Juliet: The War to debut at New York Comic Con
Los Angeles, CA August 9th, 2011. Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and 1821 Comics announced today that they will debut Romeo and Juliet: The War at New York Comic Con 2011. Stan Lee will be on hand to showcase the book and sign special limited edition mini posters promoting the title. Pre-release orders are being taken at the 1821 Comic’s booth #1458. Romeo and Juliet: The War will be in stores the end of November as a deluxe 10”x13″ over sized coffee table book available in both hard and soft cover formats. Stan Lee and Terry Dougas created the story with artwork from Skan Srisuwan. The book is written by Max Work.

Romeo and Juliet: The War takes Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers and places them in the futuristic sci-fi/fantasy Empire of Verona, the most powerful territory on Earth. The MONTAGUES, powerful cyborgs made of artificial DNA, and the CAPULETS, genetically enhanced humans known for their speed and agility, worked in tandem to destroy all threats to the city. With no one left to fight, the Montagues and Capulets found themselves a new enemy: each other.

Stan Lee commented, “This is the graphic novel I’ve always dreamed of doing. Take one of the world’s greatest stories, known and loved throughout the globe, place it against the background of a future age, a more violent, science-gone-mad age–embellish it with the most powerful, dazzling, illustrations ever seen and produce it in the largest, most impressive format of all.Romeo and Juliet: The War! It’s the crowning achievement in this, the age of the graphic novel.”

Last week the New York Comic Con knocked the InvestComics Hot Picks off track for the very first time in 3 plus years. The NYCC was worth breaking that streak, we’ll just have to start a new one starting right……..now. Great news for Spider-Man fans, Carnage is back! Maybe not so great news for Peter, but check out the new Carnage #1 headed your way this week. There will be 4 covers for this one. Jump on the rarest of the 4 variants and hold on to it. Carnage fever will heat up like it did back in the early to mid nineties. Amazing Spider-Man #344 (1991), drawn by Mr. himself Erik Larsen introduced us to Cletus Kasady. Comics Price Guide lists this comic at $15. Cletus later becomes Carnage in Amazing Spider-Man #360 (1992). Spidey #360 gives us the cameo of Carnage, as Amazing Spider-Man #361 gives the first full appearance. The full appearance will cost you $18 and the cameo will cost only $4. Considering how hot Carnage became at one time, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this villain heat up once again.

Going from one extreme to another, Batman villain Ragman never quite fit the bill as a hot commodity as Carnage did, a good villain nonetheless. So Ragman Suit of Souls #1 comes out this week. What does this mean for the collector? Absolutely nothing probably, but if you want to be on top of things, look for Ragman #1 from 1976 with a cover by legend Joe Kubert. The self titled number one issue was Ragman’s first appearance. This comic, like the first appearance of Carnage comes in at the $18 mark. So herein lays the question. You have $20 to spend; you have 2 first appearances to choose from. On one side you have an extremely popular villain from Marvel that has the potential to breakout once again, or you have a lesser known (less popular) Ragman that has a Joe Kubert cover, and is almost twice the age of the 1992 book (34 years old). Ragman being the older comic will probably be the harder to find in better shape, and is a Bronze Age comic. Ragman wins because of the age, the number of the issue and Kubert cover. Look for Ragman #2 while you’re at it. That issue is the origin issue. It’s only $14, another nice book to have in your collection.

1aaa1aaafldcvertA few more books to check out this week are; Kick Ass 2 #1. Do you really need an explanation of this comic? Vertigo Resurrection #1 from Warren Ellis. With names like Ellis, Bernie Wrightson, Jim Lee attached, once again, an explanation? And finally Thor’s bro gets his own book Loki #1. He’s a bad dude, and appearing in his sibling’s movie next year.

That’s it for now. Remember to check out InvestComics™ TV. A lot of very cool guest coming up!

See you next week. Invest wisely.
