superman-dc-comicsVixen will get her own series this Wednesday’s Justice League Of America Vixen Rebirth #1. We last saw DC try Vixen in her own title by way of a 5 issue mini-series back in 2008. Vixen first appeared in Action Comics #521 (1981). Her new series will have writers Jody Houser and Steve Orlando with art by Jamal Campbell.
Justice League Power Rangers #1. Not too sure why this team-up is happening, but we’ll remain optimistic here. New York Times best selling author Tom Taylor and artist Stephen Byrne are steering this thing. Let’s see how this goes.
New Super Man #7 has the New Bat-Man of China waiting in the wings. Check out that Bernard Chang cover too.
Artist Jock and writer Scott Snyder debut a new Mr. Freeze in All-Star Batman #6. The Jock covers are awesome too.
Stephen Segovia and Art Thibert provide fans with a great comic cover; Action Comics #971. As does Shane Davis on Deathstroke #10.

daredevil-marvelMarvel will make it official on new comic book day. Miles and Gwen/Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen will kiss in Spider-Man #12. What will happen from here is anyone’s guess, but the romance officially starts here. Great cover and variants accompany part 1 of ‘Sitting In A Tree’ storyline.
It looks as though one of Marvel’s most notorious villains will be making an appearance in a Daredevil comic after a bit of a layoff. Bullseye will appear in this weeks Daredevil #15. Bullseye last appeared in a Daredevil comic back in 2014’s Daredevil #9. And with the latest series written by Charles Soule and penciled by Ron Garney, it’s been a fantastic ride thusfar. Adding Bullseye to the mix will bring things up a notch.
Silk will get a new costume in Silk #16. Well sort of,she goes undercover and dons a cool new uniform.

It’s been a little bit since Image Comics had a hit number one comic in their arsenal that no one will see coming. That’s why we have your back. We met the creators of the new series coming this Wednesday God Country at the San Diego Comic Con (2016). They were so nice, writer Donny Cates and artist Geoff Shaw. They were nice enough to sign a huge promotional poster for us. They told us a bit about the premise and were extremely passionate in explaining. We urge readers to check out this comic on Wednesday as we can say it will probably sell out quickly. God Country #1.

Motor Crush #1 saw some nice sales. So much so that it sold out and went to a second print. Check out the Babs Tarr, Cameron Stewart followup this week; Motor Crush #2.
Great indie comics to check out on new comic day…..Deep #1 (Boom Studios), author Tom Taylor writes. Another Red Sonja series debuts from Dynamite Entertainment. Check out that J.Scott Campbell cover; Red Sonja #1.
Dr Crowe #1 (215 Ink), Red Dog #2 (451 Media Group), Hard Case Assignment #1 and Khaal #1 (Titan Comics).

Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Here are four comics to BUY NOW at or under $99. No biding. Man-Thing #1 (1979) 9.8. A high grade bronze here and origin retold for only $66.49. DC Super Stars #17 (1977) 7.5. This is the first full appearance and origin of Huntress (Helena Wayne) at only $84. Forever People #8 (1972) 9.6. An earlier Darkseid appearance, Jack Kirby story, art and cover for $84.95. Marvel Feature #4 (1972) 5.5. First Bronze Age Ant-Man appearance and origin retold. Spider-Man appearance as well. All this for only $60.

DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1 will deliver the goods on new comic day. A ton of world class talent in this $9.99 special. DC is touting the return of Detective Chimp in this book as well. The last time we saw Detective Chimp in action was in 2011’s Zatanna #16. A hard to find/scarce comic and a fantastic Adam Hughes cover to boot. If you’re interested, Detective Chimp’s first appearance (modern) into the DC universe occurred in DC Comics Presents #35 (1981). Art from legend Gil Kane.
Deathstroke #8 concludes the ‘Professional’ story line as Deathstroke battles Superman. The Shane Davis cover is a keeper. More so if you’re a Superman fan….And that Jim Lee Suicide Squad #8 cover too. Wow.
Harley Quinn not only becomes more of a player, but will grace one of the variant covers of the new Batman TMNT Adventures #2.

Daredevil #14 puts the villain Muse front and center in the conclusion of the ‘Dark Art’ story line. Muse paints a dismal Daredevil cover here. A terrific Ron Garney cover. He’s been killing it with these unbelievable Daredevil covers hasn’t he?? Muse could be a villain that sticks in Daredevil’s side for years to come. Muse(2) first appeared a few issues ago in Daredevil #11.

It turns out (no surprise), after much muttering, moaning and complaining (instead of giving things a chance first, what a concept there), Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows debut was a likable first issue. The consensus is stating that fans actually dig the first issue and now Marvel needs to follow it up with more of the same to garner even more interest. Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #2 will have the new modern day Fantastic Four comic, but with three, different players, a family, well you get the idea, fighting their way out of an attack from the Mole Man. The J. Scott Variant family cover is a beauty. Speaking of Mr. J. Scott Campbell, his Red Sonja #0 variant jumps off the cover.
Kate Bishop begins her solo career this Wednesday, bumping off Clint in Hawkeye #1. Kind of like what Prescott did to Romo. (NFL fans only understand this reference, sorry non-sports fan). Check out Kate Bishop’s first appearance in Young Avengers #1 (2005).
Salvador Espin pays homage to Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man #1 (1990) with his cover for Deadpool Back In Black #5. Also, Chris Stevens pays homage Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants #87 (1990) with his cover for Guardians Of The Galaxy #15.

The battle begins for the ultimate supreme mutant team in the Marvel universe. IVX #1 pits the Inhumans against the X-Men. Lets revisit here, Disney is so perturbed with Fox Studios regarding the X-Men franchise and them not ‘teaming up’ with Marvel Studios that the original ‘X’ books and Wolverine have basically disappeared from their comic book universe altogether. Disney has announced the Inhumans will be starring in their own television show by next year. Now Disney realized a bit how insecure they have looked, so they are bringing back ONE X title(s) by early next year. So……our money is on the Inhumans. That’s until Fox relinquishes or lets Disney borrow Wolverine from their clasp. Then our dough will be on the X-Men. We can switch sides like that. So can you.

Best Selling Marvel Comics of 1983 – 30 years later !

Best Selling Marvel Comics of 1983 – 30 years later !

Marvel1983

Copper Comics are becoming hotter than ever as these books approach the 30 year mark.

Lets take a look at a list I have compiled of potentially the best selling ongoing Marvel Comics series of 1983.

This list ranks them in order of best selling titles based on total number of sales.   Most of the sales statistics come from the yearly average published in each title.   For some titles marked with a * I have come up with a potential number of what the sales might have been for numerous titles basing the numbers on years around it when the 1983 info was not known.

X-men were officially Marvel’s new champions.  For a 2nd year in a row Uncanny X-Men was Marvel’ s best selling title and also a 2nd year in a row that sales surpassed 300,000 copies of every issue.  In fact X-Men celebrating its 20th anniversary had its biggest sales ever in the history of the title.  X-Men was the undisputed leader in Marvel sales and held #1 rank of the year for 17 years in a row (1982-1998).

Daredevil was at the peak of its career as well.  1983 was the best selling year of Daredevil for any year from 1969-2013.  Only 1960’s sales were actually higher.  Not even the 90’s glut period did sales figures reach this high as Daredevil outsold Spider-man and all other titles.

The Marvel Universe was super strong in the mid 1980’s and many of the core titles were having big comebacks.  Fantastic Four was having some of its best selling years (1983-1986) with 4 years in a row selling over a quarter of a million copies.

Amazing Spider-man had dominated as Marvel’s #1 best selling title for a full decade (1966-1976,1980).  However in the early 80’s Amazing Spider-man hit the lowest of its career ever since it had debuted in 1963.  It would not drop this low again until 1995 when the boom market finally crashed on all new comics.   Hobgoblin debuted in this series and would eventually became a collectors item key for 1983.

Alpha Flight is the highest ranking comic of 1983 that there are no sales figures known so its actually possible that sales figures were much higher and that it might have actually ranked as high as  #2 behind X-Men.    Known figures for 1986 were 239,000 which is the number I am using for comparison sake but being a new series may have sold much much higher in its first year.

The Avengers had a new boom in popularity during the 1980’s just like X-Men did.   I guess “groups” were in !  The Avengers had an impressive run of selling more than 200,000 every year from 1979 to 1990.   Interestingly during the big comics sales boom of the early 90’s Avengers sales actually were dropping not increasing like most titles.

New Mutants was another new title that there are no known sales figures so I have matched the number of 216,000 from the 1986 sales figures but just like Alpha Flight, sales may have been much higher in its first year.

Unfortunately there are no sales figures for Conan The Barbarian ever during the 1970’s but during the 1980’s the title surpassed 200,000 three times and this was one of those record years ranking a high #8.

Red Sonja was a new title in 1983 so I estimated sales could have easily been at least 30,000 copies higher than the following year so the title may have sold close to the 200,000 range in its first year only before dropping and surprisingly having a short life.

After the cancellation of the Incredible Hulk TV series the comic book lulled along during the entire 1980’s.   It did not have any real impressive years just sold decently throughout the decade.

Iron Man also was decent but not overly impressive during the decade.

Star Wars which had ranked as the #1 best selling  Marvel Comic in the late 1970’s was starting to show signs of wear after the 3rd movie appeared (Return Of The Jedi).  For the first time since its debut Star Wars fell out of the top 10 best sellers.

I have debated many times with collectors about the potential future value of copper age books.  Many don’t believe the era has a chance but I see more and more signs of nostalgia kicking in as these books finally reach of age as true collectibles and key issues (even though common) are bringing record prices.     If the number of collectors that reminisce correspond with the popularity of the books in the first place than this chart could actually help show which titles have the best long term potential based on interest.

While comics did not hit record high sales in the 1980’s they did become the first decade where the majority of collectors for the first time were trained to bag and board their comics.  On average Marvel Comics in 1983 sold 300% higher / more copies than a Marvel Comic does today in 2013.

In case you are wondering so far only 3 Marvel Comics from 1983 have hit the $50.00 price guide mark.

The biggest key valuable books so far are Amazing Spider-man #238 and #239 and Power Man #84.   Power Man features an early appearance of Sabretooth and based on its low ranking is definitely one of the lowest printed Marvel key books of the year.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 7-17-13

THE mecca of all comic pricing, the Overstreet comic book price guide hits this week. It’s the single most recognized source (besides the internet) comic book guide of its kind. One can find out virtually any information they need about a specific comic in there. Although the pricing of the comics were always on the “lower end”, it’s a fantastic reference book. So pick up your Overstreet Price Guide (1970- ) #43 this week with your choice of either the hardcover (Mike Deodato Jr cover) or the softcover (Andy Kubert cover) and go through it with the magnifying glass as I did as a young boy. You will be amazed at some of the references that you were never aware of. A collectors dream all in one place……

Most/sometimes in the aftermarket when it comes to the big 2, many collectors are caught by surprise on a hot book. Not such the case in the Todd McFarlane/Erik Larsen Spidey days and thereafter. Todd had Venom, Erik had Cletus Kasady, and Mark Bagley had Carnage. Amazing Spider-Man #361 (first appearance of Carnage) at one time was a very hot sought after comic. Nowadays, it’s still a book that collectors clamor for, but the pricing has come down significantly. So with the recent success of “Superior” Spider-Man, readers will now see Superior Carnage (2013) #1 this week. Remember when the “Noir” titles were a hot thing? Readers were bombarded with Noir titles up the ying yang. Well maybe we’re headed down the same path here? Superior Deadpool, Superior Daredevil? Ugh, we hope not. The success of Superior Spider-Man will water down its uniqueness if the word “Superior” supersedes every title. But with all of the Debbie downer stuff out of the way, Superior Carnage #1 does in fact look like a fun ride. Be sure to check it out this week.

Red Sonja has made her presence known in the comic book world quite often, countless number one issues from Dynamite Entertainment as well as countless appearances within the Marvel Universe. This week however from Dynamite Entertainment will release Red Sonja (2013 Dynamite) #1 and this one is one to watch out for. It’s not like others that have come before. This number one issue brings the awesome creative talents of writer Gail Simone to the table. Yes, this will be good. Yes, you should pick it up. Brianna gives a 7/10 rating in her reviews (appearing tomorrow). And just in case the Red Sonja decides to breathe a second life, be sure to have Conan the Barbarian #23 (1973 – first appearance) in your stash. This comic is already a collector’s item anyway.

Avengers (2012 5th Series) #16 asks the question “What ever happened to Starbrand and Nightmask?” Guess we will find out right?! What we do know is that these two individuals originally appeared in their own titles under the New Universe umbrella before being rebranded into the Marvel Universe today. Both Nightmask #1 and Starbrand #1 from 1986 can be found at your local comic shops bathroom magazine rack or the giveaway boxes. Not saying they are bad stories or bad comics, just saying they are very accessible.

IDW will bring back a comic from extinction – Dinosaurs Attack (2013 IDW) #1. Dinosaurs Attacks originally appeared as an Eclipse comic graphic novel from 1991. The best part of the IDW release is that they bring back the same creative team that brought us the 1991 story. Herb Trimpe, Gary Gerani, and Earl Norem.

Green Lantern New Guardians (2011) #22 introduces the beginnings of Lantern’s next major foe. It’s always a great thing to get on the ground floor with a new storyline. Fans of the 1966 Batman show will have some fun this Wednesday with Batman 66 (2013 DC) #1. For the first time ever, DC covers the campy show in comic book form. BAM-POW-ZANG! Fun times ahead!

Here are a few independent comics to get onto your radar this week. A new take on the Watson & Holmes story – Watson and Holmes (2013 New Paradigm) #1, this looks very promising. Numbercruncher (2013 Titan) #1 also looks very interesting, Dark Horse offers up two new number ones to check out; Strain The Fall (2013 Dark Horse) #1 and Blood Brothers (2013 Dark Horse) #1. And BOOM! Studios gives us Day Men (2013 Boom) #1.

That’s it for this week. Sign up for the InvestComics newsletter below or on the front page of the website.
