Batgirl #9 continues the Ethan Cobblepot story. Batgirl meets up with Ethan’s daddy; The Penguin. Writer Hope Larson, artist Christian Wildgoose.
Mitch Gerads’ Vigilante Southland #6 cover pays homage to Keith Pollard’s Vigilante #1 (1983).

Madame Hydra seems to be the one behind Steve Rogers becoming the ‘bad guy’. Find out in Captain America: Steve Rogers #14 what the Madam has been up to. Writer Nick Spencer and artist Javier Pina bring some(?) of the reasons as to why Steve Rogers is all about Hydra these days. Many fanboys had their panties all tied up too tight when Steve hailed Hydra a little while back and needed something to complain about instead of realizing that Marvel was telling a story. All will be well in given time, back to normal. It’s absurd how some fans were reacting. Getting back to Madam Hydra; her first appearance was in Captain America #110 (1969). Penciled by Jim Steranko and written by Stan Lee. Classic cover from Steranko.
A new Iron Fist #1 comic from writer Ed Brisson and artist Mike Perkins hits this Wednesday. We are quite sure this comic will get more respect than the new Netflix television show is getting. Lots of variant covers to choose from.

Get with it.  Writer Jeff Lemire brings the character Bloodshot into a new light with Bloodshot Reborn #0. Pencils from Renato Guedes.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Batman 66 #21 graded 9.8. This modern book has no real bearing on any significance within the speculation market.  What it does have are FOUR signatures for only $69.99! With FREE shipping! A personal collectors piece for sure. The signatures include; Jeff Parker, Mike Allred, Laura Allred and Sandy Jarrell. That’s it. Go grab it!

A new Black Panther title will introduce a character named Zenzi. Pick up Black Panther World of Wakanda #1 to see her.
Riri Williams will become the latest female to take over a male Marvel character. Riri Williams will star in Invincible Iron Man #1 as the NEW Iron Man. Iron MAN? Hmmm…..okay. Anyway, this will be the latest of the female takeover of the Marvel universe characters that used to be male. Riri Williams first appeared in Invincible Iron Man #7. Riri Williams’ armor also made a cameo in this issue. J. Scott Campbell provides a non-controversial Riri Williams Iron Man variant cover.
There is something so satisfying on so many levels to read so many fans are still in a tizzy regarding Captain America as a Hydra dude. America always wins in comics, so relax will ya. Maybe this Wednesday will either send those tizzy fans over that proverbial edge or satisfy them. Captain America Steve Rogers #7 promises to rock our world. We’re ready, bring it!

Writer Gerry Conway and artist Ryan Stegman deliver the latest Spidey installment complete with new characters with Spidey powers. Check out Now Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 with lots of variant covers to choose from. One of the covers you can actually win from us and Unknown Comics. Enter to win right HERE. Good luck!
Penn of the comedy duo ‘Penn and Teller’ will write Spider-Man Deadpool #11. Penn Jillette has dabbed in the comic writing a few times. The first time was in Detective Comics #600 (1989). He’s done a couple of DC books and a Dark Horse comic, but this will be the first time he’s getting a check from Disney to write a comic for Marvel.
Solo #2 variant cover is an ode to Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants #93 (1990). Right? It sure looks that way.

Deathstroke #6 sees the reemergence of Jericho. The last time we saw him was in Convergence New Teen Titans #1. Right? Anyways, one of our favorite books over the years that we pushed was (and still is) Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (1984). Not only the first appearance of Jericho, but the first Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and the origin of Deathstroke. All done by the legendary George Perez. What a fantastic book.
DC introduces a brand new character in her own series. Check out Mother Panic #1 by writer Jody Houser and artist Tommy Lee Edwards. The Bengal cover is great, as is the Tommy Lee Edwards Batman cover. Batman appears on two of the four covers.
Detective Comics #944 continues the introduction of new characters.

Readers know how much love we show to show to artist JOCK whenever we have a chance. Check out the All-Star Batman #4 cover. Here are some other eye catching comic covers this week; Batgirl and The Birds of Prey #4 cover by Yanick Paquette. Both Superwoman #4 covers. One by Emanuela Lupacchino and Ray McCarthy and the other from Ben Oliver. Writer Phil Jimenez continues to bring it each month on this title.

Image Comics’ Violent Love #1 has the makings of a film studio scooping it up. Two bad as* bank robbers from different parts, fall in love. Writer Frank J Barbiere and artist Victor Santos bring us this double sized issue for only $3.99. Both the A and B covers rock as well.

Indie Comics…….
Black Mask Comics hit a nerve and a home run with fans regarding the release of Black #1. An extremely well done book referencing the constant struggle from within the confines of America and its racial undertones. The second issue will probably cause a stir within the comic community as well as other media outlets. The cover of Black #2 will probably be the reason for this. Maybe this comic (and cover) will make news media turn their heads and eyes, then their mouths will talk about it. Also from Black Mask Comics this week; Forevers #2.
This week’s indie hit comic will be Terminarch one shot from OSSM Comics. Artist at war is the premise here. Literally, artist fight in a war against alien beings that sparred them after destroying everyone on earth, but them. Everything is kind of okay, but things turn around as the artist fight back. This comic is sold out on the distributor level.

The new Adam Hughes Betty and Veronica series seems to be hitting a chord with comic fans. We did our press runs at San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con and there were lots of fans talking and gathering around the Archie Comics booth to meet up with Adam. Not only because we all know he’s an awesome artist, but fans were gathering to snag up signed copies of Betty & Veronica comics. Adam is actually making a crossover regarding Betty & Veronica with fans to the likes we haven’t seen in a while. We’re talking about the “regular” comic reader with no really interest in an Archie comic. Check out Betty & Veronica #2 this Wednesday. This January, Archie is about to turn it on it’s head on CW. Check out the InvestComics Archie Comics checklist banner here and click it. Buy up those Archie books, that television series is going to be huge.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman team-up again. This time in Batman TMNT Adventures #1 (IDW).
Boom Studios has teamed with the WWE for the release of new WWE comics. First up; WWE Then Now Forever #1.
Brigands #1 (Action Lab Entertainment). Namesake #1 (Boom Studios). Galaxy For Hire #1 (Devils Due Publishing). Mummy #1 (Titan Comics).

We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: New Gods #1 graded 7.0. With lots of talk regarding the New Gods making a possible appearance in the new Justice League movie, this comic is a nice pickup. The first appearances of Orion, Lightray, Metron, Kalibak, Highfather, New Genesis and Apokolips. Also with a Darkseid cameo. Story and cover art from Jack Kirby. A fantastic book for your collection. A buy it now price tag of only $85.

There is a very big hyper-machine running behind a new character getting their own book in a few months. His name is Mosaic. Mosaic #1 is being pushed by Marvel as the next big thing (character) since sliced bread, but InvestComics is not going to give into the hype….just yet. A comic coming this week will be the first appearance of that “hot” Marvel character Mosaic. We are 99.999999% sure that other speculation sites and wannabe speculators will tell you to buy this comic it’s going to be so HOT! Maybe it will be, right out of the gate, but there are so many mitigating factors going into this week’s Uncanny Inhumans #11. Will Mosaic play a key role in the Marvel Universe for years to come? Anyone remember Sentry? Will Mosaic play a key role in another characters life? A brother, a son, a reincarnation? Will Mosaic ‘click’ with the fans long term? See Spider-Gwen or Gwenpool, but not Silk as much. Will the character actually have substance to make him interesting enough for fans to come back and or demand to see him more within the Marvel U? It has taken literally decades for Werewolf By Night #32 (Moon Knight) to earn some respect. Partial thanks to InvestComics for pushing that particular book for the last 12 years. The basic point here is not to go all in by paying premium prices for a first appearance of Mosaic if you have no idea where this characters’ future lies within the Marvel U. The easiest call to make these days is the new female characters Marvel introduces. They seem to jump out and kick major as* in the aftermarket quick. The female counter parts however are a bit more touch and go sometimes. Mosaic is the next Marvel character to be pushed in an aggressive way, to which does not always equate to speculator gold. Sometimes it equates to a huge bust. We’ll have to do a wait and see here for a bit, but for now, Uncanny Inhumans #11 has all eyes on it this week. Buy a copy and make your own judgment as to whether or not YOU want to dig in with Mosaic. Don’t think too long though or you’ll have to wait for a second print, thus missing that possible easy flip. This comic will be completely sold out before new comic book day Wednesday.

Fans of Spider-Gwen may want to keep an eye out on the Spider-Gwen Annual #1 comic this week. Marvel is setting up Spider-Gwen’s near future right here.
We hate to say we told you so, but we told you so. We informed readers that the Spider-Man Deadpool series was going to be huge. We told readers to pick up that Spider-Man Deadpool #1 issue, it’s now headed to it’s sixth printing. Check out the all-star issue this week; Spider-Man Deadpool #6.
Last month fanboys got their panties in a bunch because Steve Rogers uttered two very bad words at the end of his debut issue. Lets see if Captain America Steve Rogers #2 brings some clarity or sends the fanboys into more of a tizzy. Maybe Marvel will add fuel to the fire and have the fanboys daring to stop buying Marvel comic books! Been there, done that. Deep breath dudes, breathe.

The Amazing Spider-Man And Silk Spider(Fly) Effect #4 story will have both Spidey and Silk reminiscing about that fateful day in the science fair where they were both bit by the same spider. Ah, good ol’ times! And that Ryan Stegman cover is killer.
It looks as though Marvel is trying to put Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) front and center in their universe. Good deal, we dig it. Captain Marvel #6 will feature Carol in a defining type moment in her hero career. Be there to witness it.

Harley Quinn appearance alert! Harley will make an appearance in Grayson Annual #3.
Deathstroke Annual #2 will introduce a villain named Balkan.
Disclaimer; we’re not crapping on this series, but just stating facts via the social media non-presence and the overall quietness of fans. We warned speculators from the outset. Do not get too vested in the third installment. The colossal failure/delayed Dark Knight III hits its fifth issue (Dark Knight III The Master Race #5). Maybe sales are good for DC with this series, but fans are NOT really talking about the third go-around here. Delays have killed any momentum the series may have had. All that said, a Midtown Comics Greg Capullo variant looks snazzy! And of course you have the Jim Lee variant coming in at $550. Unbelievable to us how JUST a cover, a NEW comic, with the SAME insides/story as ANY of the other 10 variants commands $550. **The fanboy screams** “but it’s a 1 in 300” (or whatever the ratio is), we don’t care. MAJOR SPOILER POSSIBILITY AHEAD. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED, SKIP THE FIRST TOP 5 PICK RIGHT NOW.

Before Watchman #4 (2013) – Rumors abound regarding the new DC Universe Rebirth Special #1 comic coming this Wednesday is sparking MAJOR interest in this 2013 Watchmen comic. Total speculation is driving this comic a bit out of control in the aftermarket. Don’t get caught on the high-end of this move because when the dust settles, we’re looking at another ordinary comic that brings a major change within the DC Universe. Some may say, “well isn’t that important though?” Well yes and no. It’s important in the here and now, but who’s to say there isn’t another DC overhaul 3 years from now and that the major Watchmen involvement now is completely erased/meaningless. This Before Watchmen #4 comic, a possible $100 book soon, will be worth nil to cover price very fast in a few years time if DC gets tired of their “game-changing” idea. If you’re in the market for a long haul here, you want to NOT do that. Not saying there isn’t possible monies to be made here, but other sites won’t tell you this; they’ll go on the basis of how much money it’s making at the moment, which is fine, but a wise investor always looks 5, 10, 15, 47 steps ahead. Be that guy, not the fanboy.

DC Universe Rebirth Special #1 – A lot of hype surrounding this comic. A few other surprise nuggets in here that we won’t speak about, but it’s the above mentioned that’s gaining the most attention right now.

Deadpool #12 – Marvel introduces Zenpool 2099.

Scooby-Doo Apocalypse #1 – The new look Scooby-Doo series looks fantastic. Brought to us by superstar creators writers by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, and art by Jim Lee. This will be a fun read and a dynamic change of pace from what fans know of Scooby-Doo.

Daredevil #7 Apocalypse – The Khoi Pham variant cover is simply awesome. Nuff said.

DC begins their new take on their own universe this Wednesday……again. Haven’t we been here before? Maybe this time will be different and stick for a while. It’s always good to be an optimist. So the DC Universe Rebirth Special #1 comic will be THE comic to start the proverbial ball rolling. The solicit warns readers not to jump to the back of the story (comic). This reveals one thing (most probable/speculation) that there is a big unveiling about to occur. We’re looking forward to this, so should you. Don’t be a whiny fanboy, you’ll eventually read DC Comics if you’re on a strike campaign against them, so why not just pick this comic up and see where DC will be headed?

The Fearsome Five make their return this week in Teen Titans #20. Their first appearance was back in 1981; New Teen Titans #3. Written/drawn/cover by George Perez. And many other great talents as well!

Huge grand finale from DC coming this week. Check out the conclusion to the DarkSeid War in Justice League #50.

As we said with the first new look DC/Hanna Barbera release; Future Quest #1. We love the change, the risk of updating old, mundane, boring characters into modern times. Hear’s a message to the complaining fanboys, who don’t even READ the Scooby-Doo comics, who had a lot to say regarding the new look, new take, new mature theme of the Hanna-Barbera characters. Get over it, seriously. When was the last time you saw one of these fanboys actually buy a Scooby-Doo comic, read it, and then talk to their other fanboy friends about how great it was? Yes, we know that actually DOES exist in some cases, so please no emails or comments on our social media about the few we are speaking of. We’re not saying it doesn’t exist, just saying it’s far a few between that an all ages comic book is read by a 25 year old fanboy, but yet the ones that DON’T read it are the ones yelling the loudest. Simmer down. Scooby-Doo Apocalypse #1 will happen with or without you. Too bad. As for the route fans may use about not having any original material for kids to read regarding Scooby-Doo…..really?? Scooby Doo comics date as far back as 1970, plenty of comic material to pick up on before your child hits their teenage years. So it’s more about YOU than it is about them.

Now let’s get to the Scooby-Doo Apocalypse #1 comic. Written by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Jim Lee. The character designs are from Jim Lee. Keith and J.M. are veteran writers and always bring it. This comic has all the makings of a hit, but could fall flat on its face because sometimes things don’t always work out just because things “look cool” or have an all-star creative team. Hopefully the hype meets the readers and we get the hit we all expect. A plethora of variant covers will release on new comic day with this arrival. The Jim Lee regular cover is quite nice, but the Neal Adams, Ben Caldwell, and Joelle Jones covers are on point.

Okay, the Daredevil #7 Apocalypse variant cover is just crazy amaze balls. Khoi Pham absolutely killed on this one. Kudos to Khoi here. Kudos.

Another year, another Captain America number one issue. This time he has a new shield! Will this equate to more sales?! Probably not, but the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America in his own title; Captain America Steve Rogers #1 should peak some interest. Oh look at that, just an awesome legend giving fans a Cap cover. Mr. Jim Steranko everyone, step aside.

Another week, another Deadpool comic within the InvestComics Hot Picks article. Fans will see the return of Deadpool 2099 in Deadpool #12. We gave you a heads up on the first appearance of Deadpool 2099 (Warda Wilson & Wade) a few months back in Deadpool #6 (in which the cover completely mirrors the new release here). In the latest Deadpool issue, we’ll witness the first appearance of Zenpool 2099. Zenpool (without the 2099 attached) first appeared in Deadpool #36 (2014 – third volume). The first appearance for THIS particular Nighthawk was in Supreme Power #2 (2003).

Marjorie Lui continues her hit series this week with Monstress #6. If you’re not buying this comic by now, we’re not sure why you’re not. You should be.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/17/14

As stated in previous weeks, there are big changes coming to the InvestComics platform. Changes that will benefit the collector in all ways possible. It’s been a 9 year run (going on 10 years) that InvestComics has giving the speculator/reader a platform like no other web site on the internet. There are a lot of sites that have popped up over the past few years/months/weeks that have tried to duplicate the InvestComics lure, but fall short because we have the library of information provided for so many years. If you don’t take yourself so seriously, enjoy the modern/bronze age speculative/reading aspect of collecting, then you will enjoy what is to come. Stay tuned.

Coming up on the holiday season here. A very busy life calls for a less busy InvestComics Hot Picks! This doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of comics to read and speculate on for your own liking. Check out what made our list though…..

All New Captain America #2 will continue to focus on the character Nomad. It’s just a matter of time before we see this dude in a movie right? Probably not, maybe, who knows?! Anyhow, here is a small checklist (you know InvestComics has LOTS of checklist too!) on the character Nomad.

Nomad_First_Appearances_InvestComics

Nomad’s first appearance was in Captain America #180 (1974) as Steve Rogers. Captain America #261 (1981); Edward Ferbel, Captain America #1 (2013); Ian Rogers. And Jack Monroe; Captain America #282 (1983). So the question to ask yourself now is, should I buy these? Well, all of these first appearances are very affordable. You won’t lose any money and Captain_Marvel_10_InvestComics Ms_Marvel_1_InvestComicsyou’ll get great stories to boot. The answer to your question is simple. Yes.

Another Captain to look out for this week is Captain Marvel. Ever since the Captain Marvel movie announcement, Captain Marvel has been extremely hot in the aftermaket. Captain Marvel #10 will have a very cool cover that pays homage to the original appearance of Carol Danvers from Ms. Marvel #1 (1977). Marvel is celebrating the 100th solo issue with the tribute cover. The best part of this “very cool cover” is that it’s not a variant. Regular cover here!

And speaking of variants and homage covers, how about Spider-Woman #2? The obvious money grab from Marvel is stated right on the cover! Stay classy Marvel. Anyway, this “nothing to do with Spider-Woman” cover borrows from the famous Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974) (Punisher’s first appearance of course). This variant will be cover price on Wednesday. Will it stay that way for long? Maybe not given the fact Rocket Raccoon is so popular these days and Amazing_Spider-Man_129_InvestComics Spider_woman_Rocket_raccoon_investcomicsit’s a great tribute cover.

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #8 promises a mind blowing event. Readers will find out what is behind the Miles Morales legacy and who Miles’ daddy is.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #37 will reveal the secret history of Roy Harper and Oliver Queen, so fans of those two will want to check this out.

The speculative market does not remain all that quiet with new releases from Image Comics. The red hot Wytches will continue its torrid pace with Wytches #3 and Rumble #1 looks to be a nice pick-up. Ray Fawkes’ Intersect #2 will see some awesome sales. All of these Image titles will be sold out very soon. Titan Comics will have three number comics coming out on new comic book day. Check out 13 Coins #3, Mono #1 and Captain Stone #1. All of Titan’s new number ones are sold out or just about there. If you want em’, grab em’.

Titan_Comics_investcomicsSee you soon. Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 11/12/14

Wytches_InvestComics Spider-Verse_InvestComicsBe sure to stop by the Capital Grading Services website for new updates. Like us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. An announcement on the first exclusive signing coming soon!

Not each week does the opportunity present itself that a surefire hit will surface, that one book that will be an instant aftermarket success. This week however, there is that book (and another, but more on that in a bit); Wytches (2014 Image) #2. The success on issue number one was so great, that it will indeed spill over to the second issue, I guarantee it. Get your copy quick because it’s already sold out at the distributor. The reason for the success here? Put Scott Sndyer on writing duties, put Jock on art and cover duties, which equates to a fantastic story. Add to the mix of a possible movie deal and you have instant speculation gold.

A book that may take some speculators by surprise this week is Kitchen (2014 DC/Vertigo) #1. A reverting story line coupled along with the great DC imprint of Vertigo makes for a possible sleeper. The $10 variant is already sold out, so pay attention to this one.

New_Mutants_Annual_1_InvestComics Captain_Marvel_InvestComicsIt’s not too often that an IDW comic cracks the InvestComics Hot Picks list. The aftermarket never acts too kindly to certain independent publishers, this being one of them. That said, not to take anything away from them! They put out an outstanding publishing line. This week IDW gives us a rarer original content comic instead of a licensed one. Check out Bigger Bang (2014 IDW) #1 this week. Looks like a winner.

Drifter (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at the distributor, but is still available at some of the on line outlets. If you are afraid you may miss it at your local shop, you should probably buy it on line before that becomes a non-option for you.

What more can be said on here that hasn’t already been said about Spider-Verse? I have been alerting you for months about how important this saga is. Gave you a heads up on the Gwen Stacy issue too a few weeks ago. It begs repeating though just in case you haven’t been listening. This Spider-Verse story line is one of the most important speculation Spider-Man series to come out in quite some time. This isn’t “One More Day”, or “The Clone Saga”, this is a story line that will introduce and re-introduce every single Spider-Man costume, person, metal armor, and even an animal BACK into the fold of the Marvel universe all at one time. So to reiterate for the millionth time here, what does this Django_Zorro_InvestComics Rocket_Raccoon_Variant_InvestComicsmean for the speculator? It means that there are going to be an abundance of breakout characters here. Old and more importantly NEW! If you are a reader or a speculator, you need to get on every single Spider-Verse book. Anything Marvel throws at us, get it. There will be introductions (and reentries) in books that you were not expecting and BAM the book will blow up because the character(s) suddenly are at the forefront of a new book, or appear in another thus creating a mad frenzy to find that first appearance. I said it from the beginning, the Spider-Verse story line is a huge marketing monster with tremendous potential to explore and introduce new Spider characters. Do not sleep on this specs. So with all of this stated, Spider-Verse (2014) #1 will do all of the above mentioned. The team of Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos begin the awesome series. There are two separate stories introducing two new spider characters. Yes this book, better yet, this series is one to get without a doubt!

And speaking of reintroduction’s, check out Silver Surfer (2014 5th Series) #7. There will be characters reintroduced into the Marvel lure that promise’s to blow readers away. Be sure to take a look and make an executive decision on whether or not to pursue this issue and the first appearances of our old guest. Oh and the best best part of this comic.Want to know? Dan Slott is the writer! So pulling double duty here with the reintro’s.

Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man (2014) #7 will focus on the question; who is Katie Bishop? Maybe she is going to play a major role in the Ultimate Spider-Man universe. Maybe not. Either way, her first appearance was in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #12 (2012).

All New Captain America (2014 Marvel) #1 will be accompanied with 9 variant covers at last count. This gimmick will be short lived because most likely Steve Rogers will be back in given time and Sam Wilson will be out. A “new” CaptaiJon_Sable_Freelance_1_InvestComics Superior_Iron_Man_1_InvestComicsn America is not “new” anymore and it’s grown a bit, become tiresome and non-eventful. It may sell out, but don’t look for record breaking aftermarket numbers here. The $200 variant is the only outstanding book sold out book at the moment. More of the same with the other new book the “new” Captain America will appear in this week; Captain America and the Mighty Avengers (2014) #1. There is a very nice $3.99 Rocket Raccoon variant to check out though.

Guardians 3000 (2014) #2 will introduce a new Herald to Galactus.

A new Iron Man book will turn some heads. Check out Superior Iron Man (2014) #1.

Captain Marvel has been in the news lately. Have you seen that? Something about a movie. Anyway, in this weeks Captain Marvel (2014 8th Series) #9 all eyes will be on Lila Cheney. She guest stars. Lila first appeared in New Mutants Annual #1.

Hero_2014_InvestComicsThe new Hero Initiative comic Hero Comics (2011 IDW) #2014 will feature a new Maxx story from Sam Keith. Mike Grell will provide a new story on his character from 31 years ago, Jon Sable, Freelance. A hot book for a little bit back then. Check out Jon’s first appearance in Jon Sable, Freelance #1 (1983) from First Comics. And incidentally, First Comics are making a comeback with their new release Badger comic coming soon. They were great back in the 80’s. I’m sure they will put out some great reading material this time around as well.

An odd pairing from Dynamite Entertainment this week. Django Zorro (2014 Dynamite) #1. Yes that’s right Django and Zorro?! Sounds like fun! Here’s the most awesome part of this comic release. It’s written by Quentin Tarantino! Get a CBCS witness signature on this comic, score a 9.8 and you have yourself a nice book. We’re on the saddle with this comic. The variants are fantastic too. The favorite is posted here, Nice.

A couple of other number one comics to take a peak at this week; Deep State (2014 Boom) #1 and Resurrectionists (2014 Dark Horse) #1.

Don’t forget to check out the updates on the Capital Grading Services website (www.capitalgradingservices.com).

See you soon. Invest wisely.

Nothing really jumping out this week, but here are some comics to check out…..

With Iron Fist coming onboard to the television medium, what would one expect to see more of these days leading up to the Iron Fist Netflix T.V. series? More karate/kung fu comics right? Okay so Marvel will provide that beginning this week with Deadly Hands of Kung Fu (2014) #1. The hand to hand combat comics will make their official return this week and continue as long as the demand is there. There is a good chance that Deadly Hands will be sold out in a couple of weeks. The comic that the speculator really should have in their hands is Special Marvel Edition #15 (1973). This comic features the first appearance of Shang-Chi. Written by Steve Englehart, with cover and art by Jim Starlin. Yes this would be a nice edition to have in your back issue stash.

Superman75Superman vs Doomsday. Haven’t we been down this path once before? The end result did not fare well for Clark, but it fared very well with the media and collectors at the time. Rumor has it that Supes may bite the dust again. Isn’t this suppose to be the “New 52?” Why are we getting old stories like this one revamped? Aren’t there new stories to possibly explore instead of going back to the well so much?  “NEW 52″……NEW. Okay. So with DC’s big hoopla of Superman vs. Doomsday in Superman Doomed (2014) #1, the comic that will probably be a bigger draw in the aftermarket (if there even is one for this) will be Superman Wonder Woman (2013) #8. This will be the continuation of the Superman Doomed #1 book. Maybe not as many printed Superman Wonder Woman #8’s as there will be Superman Doomed #1? Who knows? All and all, it will interesting to see what spin they put on this story this time. Buy this comic at your local shop and relive history with a new twist.

Justice League United (2014) #1 seems to have a lot of copies sitting at the distributor. What gives with that? A fantastic story will bring readers and collectors right on board though!

Captain Marvel (2014 8th Series) #3 will see our hero team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Expect to see GOTG everywhere (as they slowly have been) before they hit the screen. Speaking of Captain’s, Captain America (2012 7th Series) #20 will see Steve Rogers’ life change forever! Hasn’t he been through enough?

United States of Murder Inc (2014) #1 has television series or movie written all over it. Pick this comic up and hold on to it. You should be hearing news on this comic sooner than later……if it never comes to fruition so what. A great read will probably be ahead.

Legend John Byrne has a sold out book arriving this Wednesday. Star Trek New Visions Mirror Cracked (2014) #1 will have availability only on the shelf that you see. No mas after that spot is empty. John Byrne first tackled the Star Trek genre in 2008’s Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Romulans (no number on cover). That too was with IDW Publishing.

A new beginning after ‘All Out War’ in Walking Dead (2003 Image) #127. This comic is sold out at the distributor.

Rogue Trooper Classics (2014 IDW) #1 will focus on the debut of Rogue Trooper. Why not just get the first appearance in 2000 AD #228 (1981) if you can find it. If the demand ever drums up for the UK hero’s (as InvestComics has said it will) then maybe this should be one to have in your portfolio.

Think Tank Fun With PTSD (2014) #1 from Image comics is just about sold out. And Weird Love (2014 IDW) #1 may have the sold out sign on it very soon.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

One of the best idea’s not to come out of Marvel, but is cool anyways is Avengers Arena. As many of you know by now it’s the Hunger Games within the Marvel Universe. That said, this week in Avengers Arena (2012) #3 we get a new matchup’s including X-23 (vs. Cammi – Cammi covered in Hot Picks Avengers Arena #2) and Sentinel (vs. ?, they’re not saying. It’s a secret). So as previously said here on InvestComics Hot Picks, the fun of knowing that a character’s ultimate fate will be met out of a “game” is quite awesome. No pussyfooting around (yes the word pussyfooting was used, so what?). Secondly, these characters are fourth, third, maybe second rate players at best, so you know for the most part they will stay dead for quite some time if not permanently. This isn’t Peter Parker, Clark Kent or Steve Rogers. Everyone knew they’d be back. These Heroes/Villains…..who cares?! Right? So with that; death…. there had to be a birth someplace. X-23 stands a good chance of surviving the Arena, but things can happen! Find X-23’s first appearance in NYX #3 (2004) written by none other than Joe Quesada. Because X-23 is Wolverine’s daughter the comic in the aftermarket commands about $80. Really?? This comic is a bit overpriced, unless there is talk of her appearing in an X- Men film or breaking out anytime soon, stay away at this price. The second character who probably stands more of a chance of meeting his demise is Sentinel. Check out the first appearance in the much hyped at the time, but fell flat Sentinel #1 (2003) from Marvel’s Tsunami line. You can search the 25 cent long boxes at your comic shop for this one.

Value lesson coming up, I will start charging for this so appreciate this folks!

Much of the talk in the last couple of weeks has been about the death of Peter Parker, which in itself is completely silly. Haven’t we been taught anything with Rogers and Kent? Anyone that would pay a premium for Amazing Spider-Man #700, be it a regular cover or Variant is simply not a true comic book collector and has no idea how any of this works. Anyone who SOLD this comic at a premium, first off, you’re welcome (where’s my cut?), second; you are all learning a valuable lesson on the market. Myself, working on Wall Street for 14 years taught me that much is never what it seems and that many times you must strike while the iron is hot. Sometimes you lose though. It’s the nature of the beast, but if you are precise in your comic collecting abilities, you will be able to ONCE in a while buy that $3.99 comic and make an extremely easy profit on Ebay. Such is the case for this week’s Superior Spider-Man (2012) #1. Doc Ock inside of Peter’s body? Peter is not Spidey?? Hmm….unless you haven’t been paying attention at history or what you just read 30 seconds ago, Peter will be back. So what does this mean for Superior Spider-Man #1? Well it means that if you are looking to buy this comic and sit on it for a “value” reason, you’re wasting your time and that’s exactly what that comic will be good for is sitting on the porcelain throne. Here’s a quick tip (I want my cut), remember those people who bought those death of Parker issues for crazy money? Yea those people. Target them again, but with any variant you can possibly find on Superior Spider-Man #1. Those amateurs still believe that Peter will never be coming back and that this is truly the beginning of a “new era.” The 90’s speculation market never went away folks; it just shifted in a different way. If you don’t believe that, well then you’re missing out on easy money.

Marvel quickies: Scarlet Spider (2012 2nd Series) #13 gives us the return of Carlos Lobo! Carlos who?? Yea, remember that 25 cent bin you were looking through earlier? While you’re there, look for Spectacular Spider-Man #143 (1988). This comic will net you the mutant werewolf Carlos Lobo. Avengers #3 introduces the New Adam and on the ridiculous front we get to check out Punisher War Zone (2012) #3. Ready for this? Punisher vs. Thor. Okay bring it, should be a one panel fight, but okay.

DC Comics is set to bring back Steppenwolf in Earth 2 (2012 DC) #8. Who cares right? The real caring dates back to 1972’s New Gods #7. It’s a triple threat issue collectors! First it has the first appearance of Steppenwolf, second it has the origin of Orion and thirdly it’s all done by the King himself; Jack Kirby. Get all of that for a $60 price tag.

Ah…nothing better than seeing a villain take it to Superman once in a while. Take a look at the cover of Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #16 and witness the new Superdoom villain (lame name no?) with his hand around Supes neck. Cool! Now stop the nonsense Clark, kick his ass.

Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #16 solicit states a new villain will be interrupting things. Do they mean the Joker? Hope not, saying a new villain means a NEW villain. This new 52 stuff really is silly sometimes. Okay maybe more than sometimes.

And on the independent front we have a relaunch or a “back to basics” sort of deal with Star Wars (2012 Dark Horse) #1 from IDW. With the announcement from Disney about 3 more Star Wars films coming our way, now is a better time than never to pick up the very first Star Wars comics from Marvel. Star Wars #1 (1977) goes for a cool $3,000. This of course is for the 35 cent variant, not the regular 30 cent cover that goes for $80. See cheapo, spend the extra nickel and get something back. Anyway as mentioned, with the new films on the horizon the Star Wars comics are about to get a major jolt. If you can pick up a Star Wars #1 issue for what the asking price is on Ebay, buy it. In 10 years you’ll be very happy that you did. Other interesting looks this week include; Jinnrise (2012 IDW) #1, Plume (2012 Devils Due) #1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Secret History of the Foot Clan #1 and Mars Attacks Kiss (2012 IDW) #1.

Have a great week everyone. Invest wisely.

Captain America Elected President Of The United States of America!

Marvel sent out this Press Release and boy it’s a biggie! Scroll through the preview pages below!

Historic Story Begins in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, On-Sale Tomorrow

New York. NY—September 18, 2012—The people have spoken—and tomorrow Steve Rogers, the man known as Captain America, becomes President Elect of the United States of America! In Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, from rising star writer Sam Humphries and fan-favorite artist Billy Tan, Captain America’s made his dramatic return and publically saved America from an insidious new enemy in one of his most harrowing battles yet. But when all the dust settles, Steve Rogers is about to get the biggest surprise of his life—he’s won the special election for the Presidency via write-in! What does this mean for his future as Captain America? Can he be a President who fights on the frontlines? You’ll find out when this landmark issue hits comic stores, the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and the Marvel Digital Comics Shop tomorrow!

“This is one of those stories that could only be told in the Ultimate Comics Universe, where the only rule is simple—there are no rules.” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve seen Captain America fight wars and battle super villains, but running a country is a whole new challenge—but don’t worry, this isn’t about political speeches and closed door meetings. This is exactly the kind of high-octane, super powered thrill ride you’d expect from a book called The Ultimates!”

Then next week, in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #16, Humphries and artist Luke Ross, Steve Rogers accepts the position of President of The United States- and not a moment too soon! A deadly villain with a personal tie to the Ultimates is about to enact his endgame, one which promises to leave no hero unscathed. Now Captain America must find a way to safeguard this country both as a President and as a super hero—but can he do both?

“Captain America was created in 1941, but this is the first time he’s been made Commander in Chief. It’s an honor to write a landmark milestone for such an iconic character,” explained Humphries. “We’ve made a commitment in Ultimates to show how epic events have significant consequences. President Cap is no different. This will have a lasting impact on Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the whole team.”

With its inception in 2000, the Ultimate Comics Universe reimagined the world’s most popular super heroes for a new generation and has been critically lauded for its bold, resonant stories. In particular, the reinterpretation of Captain America in Ultimates Vol.1 is considered a watershed moment for the character and remains one of Marvel’s top-selling collections. With the August 2011 introduction of Miles Morales, an African American and Hispanic character who became the new Spider-Man, the Ultimate Comics Universe again became a hot topic among media and comic fans alike. Now, acclaimed-creators Humphries and Tan begin the next major chapter in Ultimate Comics Universe history with the release of Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, giving readers a chance to see what happens when the Earth’s mightiest hero takes charge of the world’s greatest nation.

The biggest decision of Captain America’s life is coming tomorrow in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15, the game-changing issue that fans can purchase at their local comic book store, on the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop.

Since the Avengers movie will be coming out on May 5, 2012 and the InvestComics Hot Picks always come out on Sunday….well we wanted to deliver the goods BEFORE the movie came out. So here you are, the most comprehensive Avengers checklist you will find anyplace on the web as only InvestComics can deliver!

There are written articles within this checklist that date back to 2009. InvestComics will reproduce some of these Hot Picks from WAY back then and also provide NEW insight as well. So will there be some duplicate entries? Absolutely, but there will be some other comics that were not covered in other areas, so you see no harm no foul,  just LOTS and LOTS of awesome comics to check out and hunt for.

The main focal point here is the fab four. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk. There are mentions of other Marvel characters within this article, but this is all about the fab four. The main focus here is on each of the individual series that they have appeared in. Two exceptions occur from the older checklists that were from 2009/2010. Thor and Iron Man.

Also, this week feature’s a new scrolling picture thingy that we hope you enjoy. If you want to see a picture that is scrolling on the top just click it and it will come up. On the larger picture, you can click on that picture and it will just click through to the next picture that way.

At the end of this article (which is the largest in InvestComics history!) you will find the best Avengers covers throughout the years. These covers consists ONLY OF THE ORIGINAL AVENGERS SERIES, NOT any other series or variants (well maybe a couple of variants by accident). If you have ANY covers ONLY from the original series that you think should have made the cut, DO NOT hesitate to post it below in the comments section or on the InvestComics Facebook page.

Now without any further ado…..The InvestComics Avengers Special.

Incredible Hulk #314 – First John Byrne Hulk art and last Bronze Age issue. 3 bucks? Buy.

Incredible Hulk #315 – First Modern Age issue.

Incredible Hulk #367 – First Dale Keown Hulk. This guy was born to draw the Hulk. A $4 book that should be in your collection.

Incredible Hulk #377 – Here’s a third print that made the list! This third print had massively low distribution. The cause of that makes this THIRD printing a $40 book!

Incredible Hulk #400 – Milestone issue! Prism cover! (remember those??) Well the real reason this makes the cut on this list, It’s Chris Bachalo’s first Marvel work.

Captain America Checklist

Captain America #100 – The First “true” issue of the solo Captain America series. Just like Cap’s teammate the Incredible Hulk, 43 years this series lasted. A low starting bid at $700 for this comic. Cannot stress enough to but this comic.

Captain America #109 & 112 – Here’s a great way to get a piece of Captain America’s origin, retold twice within 3 issues of each other very early in the solo run. Coming in at about $130 each. Awesome stuff here folks.

Captain America #117 – First appearance of the Falcon. $200 gets this great comic.

Captain America #120 –Final Silver Age issue.

Captain America #121 – First……..Bronze Age!

Captain America #154 – First appearance of Jack Monroe.

Captain America #180 – Nomad makes his first appearance here.

Captain America #241 – Early Punisher appearance, the first time Cap and Castle meet up. It’s a low print and very hard to find in decent condition. A $16 price tag makes this comic a must buy.

Captain America #312 – Final Bronze Age issue.

Captain America #313 – ……..And the first Modern Age issue.

Iron Man Checklist

Iron Man #1 – Tony Stark’s first solo series. This first series of at least 4 restarts lasted 28 years.

Iron Man #20 – Final Silver Age issue.

Iron Man #21 – First Bronze Age issue.

Iron Man #47 – Origin retold. $36 for this early retelling!

Iron Man #55 – If there was ever ONE comic to own within a series, THIS one is it! The first appearance of Thanos. This villain will eventually make his way onto the big screen and when he does, look out! The next Darth Vader love affair of a villain will begin when Marvel realizes that the next franchise of movies that awaits them will be the Cosmos! The $240 price tag should not in any way shape or form deter you from buying this comic yesterday.

Iron Man #115 – How is this comic only listed at $10?? It’s John Romita Jr.’s first full art work. A bargain here folks.

Iron Man #128 – Here ended the biggest and most important storyline in Iron Man’s run to date! “Demon in a Bottle!” ….With a classic cover and only $25.

Iron Man #50 Volume 3 – The awesome artistry of Mike Grell on Iron Man. Cool stuff.

THOR CHECKLIST

Journey Into Mystery #83 – Well this is where it all began, a hefty $20,000 price tag on this one, but with Thor finally coming to the movie screen, appearing in many Marvel titles, The Avengers movie, and most of all the children in all of the world will want a Thor hammer. Yes, Thor’s first appearance will be a buy right now. It has tremendous upside.

Journey Into Mystery #84 – Natalie Portman gets the role of Jane Foster, here is the first appearance of Jane. $2500 seems to be a bit much on a character that will never be a Lois Lane, or a Mary Jane type caliber player.

Journey Into Mystery #85 – Where there is a hero, there is a villain. Thor’s main thorn in his side will be “brother” Loki in the film. This comic is a very good buy at $1200. Everyone loves a villain and if Loki transfers to the screen with the hate and venom he displays so well in the comic books, this comic will be a winner. Actually, either way this comic is a winner at $1200. No downside to this book for a long term investment. Wait one more reason to purchase this book, Heimdall’s first appearance here too!

Journey Into Mystery #86 – Well Thor and Loki have to have a daddy right? Odin’s first full appearance right here folks. Sir Anthony Hopkins does the honors of playing the father of the 2 rival siblings in the film. If you haven’t caught any of his movies (how would this even be possible??), you should the man has some serious talent. That said, Odin’s first full appearance here doesn’t command that much money. You’re looking at only $600. This comic has the slowest progression potential of the males in the family. Don’t look for this comic to really boost up in the rating’s that much. Buying this at $600 will have you waiting quite a while before you see some slight upticks. Your money would be more well spent on issue number 112, more on that in a bit.

Journey Into Mystery #99 – A 2 for 1 here, first appearances of Sutur and Mr.Hyde. $350 price tag. Not much upside here, but great Kirby cover…..as usual from The King.

Journey Into Mystery #102 – This issue features Thor’s first stalker, Sif. This is her first appearance. Have you seen Jaime Alexander? She’s playing Sif in the movie. Wow. Be nice to see her in a bad 2 hour move like Elektra. “Watching” Jennifer Garner was so painful……not.

Journey Into Mystery #103 – Another 2 for 1 deal! This one is cheaper to buy, but a better one. This comic gives us a first look at the Executioner and Enchantress. At $200, more upside than issue #99, simple as that.

Journey Into Mystery #112 – Remember that $600 you should hold on to? (issue #86) Well this comic would be a better pick up with that cash. Yes, not disputing that Odin’s first appearance wouldn’t be a welcome addition to any collection, but a Jack Kirby Thor vs. Hulk comic?? This is a continuation of their first meeting in The Avengers #3 comic, Also from Jack Kirby! That one comes in at $1000. The two of these comics are no brainers at the going rate. Talk a dealer down at a show for $1500 for both if you can and you have gold. Big upside to these undervalued comics right now.

Rounding out the Journey Into Mystery comics, we get to issue #114, first Absorbing Man $145. Issue #115, which is an early origin issue of Loki for only $200. Issue #118, first Destroyer $170.

Thor #126, the classic Kirby cover from 1966 still till this day is one of the best Thor comic covers of all time. The only cover that rivals it in the Thor realm would the Silver Surfer #4 from John Buscema circa 1969 for $500. Awesome covers by 2 legends.

Thor #126 – Journey Into Mystery ended with issue #125, The Mighty Thor begins with issue #126! This essentially is THE number one issue of Thor. A price of only $400 makes this extremely attractive. Probably the best 400 bucks you’ll spend on your Thor collection. Do not pass this up…….or Silver Surfer #4.

Thor #129 – Introduces the more recent deceased Ares. Wait isn’t he back already? Don’t matter, $100 for this bad as* characters first appearance?? An absolute beauty here, buy it now. Forget any variant covers coming out for a few weeks, look for this instead.

Thor #132 – First appearance of Ego for $100.
Thor #137 – First Ulik goes for $100.

Thor #148 – The Wrecker of the Wrecking Crew, his first appearance in this issue. $85 for Thor #148 plus $10 for Defenders #17 will get you the entire Wrecking Crew team. Defenders #17 (1974) has the first appearance of Bulldozer, Pile Driver, and Thunderball. If ever another Thor solo movie is made, maybe this oddball team would be some fun to see!

Thor #158 – An early Thor origin retelling issue from 1968 for only $100? Very nice.

Thor #165 – A very early first appearance of HIM/Warlock. If Marvel ever decides to explore the Cosmo’s in the movie theater, this would be a welcome addition to your collection. Speaking of Cosmo’s, look for a Marvel Cosmic list coming soon to InvestComics! Yes Marvel will eventually realize they have an entire universe that hasn’t gone to screen yet. So when it does, you’ll have you check list in order….right here on InvestComics!

Thor #172 – If you’re looking to invest in the comic book market, Besides the oblivious Golden Age/Silver Age books, the Bronze Age (early 70’s) books would be a very good place to start too. This issue of Thor is the first Bronze Age book in the run. The early Bronze Age books are becoming harder to find (scarceness/condition), and include some gems. Thor #172 cost only $40.

Thor #225 – First Firelord $20.

Thor #337 – If ever there was a comic that redefined a character and put them on the map, this comic would be it. One of the reasons a Thor movie is being made today is because of this comic from 1983. Yes that’s right, just like McFarlane’s Spider-Man, Miller’s Batman, this here is Walt Simonson putting the proverbial stamp on the Thor character. Thor #337 had the misfortune of being released in the 80’s when comics were overprinted, otherwise this once untouchable comic back in the 80’s would be a much higher priced commodity today. That said, any collector who calls himself/herself a comic book lover, should have this already. If you don’t, shame on you. The transformation of Thor as a character began here. Not only did Walt Simonson bring Thor to a new status quo in the Marvel Universe with this issue, he gave us the introduction of Beta Ray Bill. This is the best $7 you’ll spend as far as reading and enjoyment when it comes to a Thor comic. Buy Walt’s run, it’s an amazing ride, great story telling, and a reintroduction of one of Marvel’s best characters. The very next issue #338 tells the origin of Beta Ray Bill. $13 gets you two excellent books.

Thor #363 – Here we have the first Modern Age Thor comic. $2.
Thor #391 – First appearance of Erik Masterson, aka Thunderstrike. $2
Thor #411 – The introduction of The New Warriors. Nice $5 comic.

Thor #80 Vol 2 – The popular Avengers Disassembled started here in a prologue. $7

Thunder Strike #24 – Last issue of this series, and it’s a hard issue to find supposedly. Only $3.
What If? #39 – This What If? Story from 1983 features Thor vs. Conan. This is a fun book! $3

AVENGERS Villian Checklist (From 2010)

The Avengers have had many adversaries over the years. The Avenger villains throughout the years are definitely not a list of who’s who in the Marvel Universe. Better yet, a “who’s that? Or maybe even an “Oh yea I forgot about that one!” There is one thing regarding the villains here. Will the Avengers movie be an origin movie or an all out heroes vs. villains deal? Since the heroes are all getting themselves acquainted with the audience in their respective movies, one can hope that we get right down to business and have a villain or 2 appearing. We can also hope as well to see Thor vs. Hulk first, or a couple of the heroes battle each other, then get down to business and kick some villain as*!
While Marvel can choose any villain they want from their vast library, InvestComics will stick with who has appeared in the Avengers books as a bad guy or gal. So aside from one of the greatest if not the best tales to ever to be read or drawn in the pages of The Avengers, The Kree-Skrull War would be the “go to movie”” to make for any fan of comic books, but this isn’t so much about us “comic collectors” as it is for Hollywood to figure out their best angle to make the most money out of the least amount of work. In saying “the least amount of work”, you have to understand the task at hand here. Imagine trying to fill up a screen with 3 Major Marvel characters that all have had solo movies before this one comes out. If too much time is spent worrying about character time and who should get more money shots than the other, this movie will take about 5 years to get done. According to the latest release dates, The Avengers movie will be coming in 2 years! We’ll see it happen in 2012.

Now back to the Kree-Skrull comic. The first part of this mega awesome story appeared in The Avengers #89 with the awakening of Kree-Sentry. Although the first part from 1971 will cost you only about $40, it’s The Avengers #93 that takes the cake in this storyline. It’s the double sized issue drawn by the legend himself Neal Adams. This prize issue comes in at $150. Out of the entire 9 issue run here, this would be the one to get. There were 3 other legends that join in bringing this epic story that eventually led to the Secret Invasion story arc. Sal Buscema and John Buscema were on hand along with writer Roy Thomas. If you never got around to checking this story out, you should make a point of getting to it. So if the Kree-Skrull war doesn’t come to the silver screen as part of The Avengers movie, too bad for us and too bad for anyone that doesn’t know of this epic tale.

Let’s march forward to the Villains. Here they are in no particular order.
A Hank Pym creation that goes wrong, his creation is called Ultron. This villain has been around for a while now, constantly a thorn in the Avengers side. In 1968 the debut of Ultron happened in The Avengers #54. This will run about $40. Well worth it for a villain that we all know will always be around causing some sort of havoc for the Avengers. If Ultron is announced to make it to the silver screen, that goes up a few dollars tomorrow. If you’re looking to spend a few more bucks, take a look at The Avengers #8 (1964). This is the first appearance of Kang. Kang has been a brutal force against our Avengers for many years. The price tag here is in the $120 range. Kang is also going to rule the land in 4000AD.
The Avengers #4. Not only the first appearance of the Silver Age Captain America, it’s in this article because it’s the first appearance of Baron Zemo! Yes it’s a two for one issue!

Absorbing Man has given our Mighty Heroes a problem from time to time. Check out his first in Journey Into Mystery #114 (1965). This will be the most expensive of the choices with the Avengers villains. $145 is the starting bid here. Our next villain made an early appearance in the Avengers books. The Avengers #10 (1964) features the debut of Immortus. $100 gets you a copy of this one.
Traveling to the Cosmos we find a few characters that have been a nuisance over the years for our beloved team. Korvac falls into the annoying people category for our team. Debuting in 1975 in Giant Size Defenders #3, he quickly found his way into the lives of Marvel’s Super Team. This comic cost only $17. Take a look to the supposed granddaughter of the baddest Cosmo dude of all, Thanos. Nebula claims to be related to Thanos, but if she really was in some way wouldn’t she really be kicking some serious as*? Check out her debut in Avengers #257 (1985) for only $3. Yes it’s safe to say that she is a second rate villain, unlike her “grand daddy.” Speaking of Thanos, Iron Man #55 (1973) is the first appearance of the Cosmo goliath. If you find this comic in great shape for $240, it’s a fantastic buy for one of the most underrated villains in the Marvel Kingdom!

So there you have a smidgen of villains that have crossed the path of Earth’s Mighty Heroes. Will any of them appear in the movie? As comic book fans we always hope so! The possibilities of seeing a Thanos grace the screen or even Captain Marvel from the Kree-Skrull story would be a dream come true. Could you imagine the Avengers movie leading into a full out Marvel Cosmic Universe movie? They already have Silver Surfer out there; just add characters like Rom or something! Yes that’s right, Rom. Bring back ROM!

AVENGERS Hero Checklist

With the current Superbowl Avengers trailer, it’s fitting to run a previous Avengers special from a while back that appeared here on InvestComics. Included in this article is the Avengers trailer that has every one geeking out. Enjoy, and see you next week with the VILLIANS portion of this Avengers Special on InvestComics.

Out of all of the comic book movies we hear of coming our way, only one (maybe 2) make us all wait like that 8 year old child on Christmas Eve with the butterflies all tangled up in the gut. Thor will come upon us in 2011, while 2012 brings the Avengers. One could only hope that the end of the world doesn’t come early to spoil the Avengers fun. The anticipation of watching Thor lay down his hammer to the ground, striking it with the power of thunder, watching the ground reverberate and then watching the ground and every living thing around it succumb to nothingness will be astounding. Yes we’ll get the image of the hammer in the air on top of a mountain shot, yes we’ll get the whirl and throw as Thor takes flight, but nothing will beat that fury when he’s had enough and lays the God of law down. It’s going to be movie magic like never seen before. Thor is a badas*, always has been and always will be. Now we all finally get to witness it first hand in a live action epic movie. What could possibly be better than this you ask? Well, the Avengers movie. To have the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America on the same screen at the same time is a comic book fans dream. The biggest question mark remains, will this movie be done ‘right’? It probably will be. If you look at the other ‘team’ movie the X-Men, it wasn’t until the third movie where things really started going wrong with that franchise. The very first X-Men movie was the best one, the introduction of characters, the structure of story and a nice balance of character development. For the reasons the first X-Men movie succeeded will not be the same reason the Avengers movie will supersede it. The X-Men movie did not have the introduction of characters in their own films before the movie came out. People will have a very good general knowledge of the characters like Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, etc. when the Avengers movie hits. So what you didn’t like the Hulk movie or maybe even Iron Man, but they are not going to be the headliner here. They ALL are, so if you don’t like a certain character, you could just eat your popcorn, roll your eyes and wait for your main guy or gal to come on. Didn’t most of us do this with Wolverine in the X-Men movie?
Captain America is the leader of the Avengers, so his movie “should be” very fine tuned. He is the lead character of the Avengers film and his movie “should be” the best of all the solo Avenger movies. Although, Thor will probably be better, but who cares really? We’re going to be getting a true live action Captain America movie! How great is this?? One of the probable reasons that Cap will be a good movie and not a great one is the overseas worry in releasing an “American War Hero” in today’s political climate. It might not seem like a big deal to anyone here in the states, but even Hollywood did say that this will pose for a slight problem and they do recognize that America is not exactly on top of the ‘like list’ these days with many countries. So with that, we as an audience could suffer a bit if Hollywood decides to make too much “nice” in order to attract the overseas market. Thus, Thor will be a better movie; no one in Asgard will have to worry about offending or making amends. Besides Norman is about to get his as* handed to him by Asgard (Siege), so we’ll let him deal with them.
With the excitement of all of the solo Avenger movies coming, there is also excitement in looking at where all of these characters were first seen on the pages of a comic book. The very first time the Avengers appeared as a team was Avengers #1 from 1963. This comic could fetch at least $7000 or higher depending on the condition. It’s a classic issue brought to you by to classic creators, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Surprisingly there aren’t that many key issues in the Avengers run. One of the best standouts in the run comes in with Avengers #4. This issue was the first Silver Age Captain America coming in at a $3000 price tag, grab this one right now. Avengers #57 gives us the first Vision. If Vision is a part of the Avengers movie, (probably not, but wishful thinking) this comic will be gaining some exposure. Vision would really translate nicely to the big screen. One could only hope that he’ll make an appearance. This comic is only in the $80 range. The last of the best Key issues in the original Avengers run has to go to issue #71. The first Invaders appearance at a cost of $65.
As far as the actual Avengers team members, we’re talking a little more cash, but these comics are the cream of the crop. These are comics that will in fact appreciate in value within time with no sign of any downside. While the Avengers have a ton of members that have come and gone, 84 to be exact at last count. Let’s focus on some of the bigger ones that have already been mentioned in this article as well as some others.
Thor, first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 in 1962. The classic Kirby/Sinnott cover alone is nothing short of beauty here. The going price is about $20,000 and shows no signs of slowing down. If you’re in the market for another key Thor issue that has a tremendous upside and is undervalued at the moment, look for Thor #126. It’s been recommended on InvestComics quite a few times now over the years and since it was first mentioned in 2007; it’s gone up in value about 9% in each of those years. Might not sound like retirement money (Public service announcement! Please don’t think you could retire collecting comic books, nor send your kids to college). Although 9% may not sound like a lot to some people, it’s a nice return over a 15 year span if you hold on to this comic. Thor #126 currently comes in at only $400??!! This comic is basically the very first Thor solo comic, a Thor #1 issue if you will. In issue #125 of Journey into Mystery with Thor, Marvel decided to drop the “Journey” name and simply call it Thor with the next issue. This is one of the most “affordable” recommended buy’s right now in the InvestComics portfolio. You cannot go wrong with buying this issue. The Thor movie is going to explode, get in on the Thor craze now before the hammer becomes a regular toy item for every boy to have in their toy chest. Thor #126 is THE buy here folks. Sticking with Thor and Journey into Mystery, check out Journey into Mystery #85. This issue is the first appearance of Loki and cameo of Odin. This comic is only $1800 at the moment. Look for the popularity to increase after the Thor movie comes out.
The big Green guy, Hulk first appeared in his self titled comic; Incredible Hulk #1. This also came out in 1962. There isn’t really much to say, except that for $45,000 it gets you ownership here. So put that Red Hulk nonsense down and start saving, because at 60k this is a nice deal. You probably could buy this comic right now in the 35k range in the right circumstances.
Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39. This first appearance will cost you about $12,000. Robert Downy Jr. will be doing his thing in Iron Man 2, but look for this to climb in value as the Avengers movie gets closer. It’s not going to happen with the Iron Man sequel.
Now we have come to the biggest star of them all, Captain America. Way back, almost 70 years ago, that’s right 70 years ago Steve Rogers first appeared in Captain America Comics #1. Almost right smack in the middle of WWII we received the greatest solider the world has ever seen. Steve Rogers; the American Super Solider will cost about $140,000 to buy. Although very pricey to most, it’s an issue that will forever be as valuable as Action Comics #1. A true American Icon of American Comics will never fail in the value of collecting, whether it’s emotional value or monetary value.
Speaking of value, check out 2 issues later in Captain America #3 for Stan Lee’s first work! How cool is that?? This comic is worth about $27,000. Owning this comic means that you own a piece of history. Without Stan, the superhero climate in the Marvel Universe looks vastly different. Wouldn’t say it doesn’t exist, just saying that Spidey maybe isn’t the Spidey we know, Fantastic Four aren’t who they are, etc.

As said earlier, there have been many Avengers (approx. 84) that have graced the pages of the awesome run. A few other Avengers have had their names mentioned to appear in the Avengers Movie, one of them is set to appear in the Iron Man sequel. This character also is probably going to be the front runner to get his own movie as a result of his popularity. Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye will be a nice addition to the Iron Man film if they fit him in. If not, he will be in the Avengers movie. Too much talk about this guy appearing in one of these films if not both. Lots of times they say a character will appear in a movie, but they somehow end up on the cutting room floor. Cutting Clint out of the Iron Man 2 movie would be a travesty. It would be neat to see a hero in that movie that isn’t behind an iron suit. War Machine will be awesome, so will Iron Man, but throw Hawkeye with them and you have awesomeness. A great buy goes out to Tales of Suspense #57 (1964) for only $600. A $500 bill will probably get a deal done. Pick this up because with an appearance in Iron Man 2 the interest will start right there. The Avengers movie will thrust more interest on the Hawkeye character; don’t sit too long on buying his first appearance. Another Avenger mentioned is Ant-Man. He first appeared in Tales to Astonish #27 (1958). Talks of a solo movie for Ant-Man dried up mainly because the interest wasn’t there for the studio. A few issues later in Tales to Astonish #44 (1959) came Wasp. This female hero will not amount to much in the Avengers Movie even if she does appear. It’s not a home run with this character nor is the investment.

MORE Iron Man Comics (Hot Picks from 2009)

What KEY Iron Man books should you have in your collection? Well, since Iron Man has been around since 1963 the character has gone through some things to say the least. There have been countless major storylines involving Tony Stark (Illuminati, Avengers Disassembled, Secret Invasion, and the unforgettable Civil War, plus MANY more!). One standout storyline involving Tony Stark happened in his own Iron Man title.

The story arc was called “Demon in a Bottle”. This story really gave the rawness of Tony’s addiction to alcohol. The very first part of this arc started in Iron Man #120 (1979), brought to you by the team of John Romita Jr. and writers David Michelinie and Bob Layton Sr. If you could buy this comic within the $10 range, actually the entire run up to issue #128 for less than $10 a piece you will arguable own one of the greatest story arc’s of the Iron Man series ever. Think of this run as the “Frank Miller Daredevil” run. It’s the defining moment in the series. A very nice nugget hidden away in the Iron Man series is Iron Man #115 (1978). If you are a fan of John Romita Jr. then this comic should already be in your collection. This issue was John’s first full art work of his career. This is as unvalued as they come in the collection world. InvestComics suggests that you find this comic, buy it in Near Mint condition, and store it. This gem is a firm collector’s item!

Iron Man’s very first appearance came in Tales of Suspense #39 (1963) , but it wasn’t until Tales of Suspense #48 (1963) did we first see the Red and Gold armor. In the new release of Iron Man #25 this week, Tony Stark dons the new look armor. Wouldn’t you want the original Red & Gold to go with the latest? TOS #48 is a strong buy. Sticking with the Tales of Suspense series for a sec, Issue #52 is the first appearance of the Black Widow. Yea Scarlett is looking mighty fine in those tight black latex pants in the Iron Man movie. Check out Amazing Spider-Man #86 (1970) where the Widow dons the Black latex for the first time. That issue is penciled by the legend John Romita Sr.

Let’s get back to the Iron Man series, and lets go in chronological order too. The number one issue from 1968 is a VERY affordable $900 to $1200 right now. Unbelievable considering how much play this character will get for the next 10 years. Iron Man #21 (1970) is the first Bronze Age issue. Do you really need to be told to get your butt on this one? Iron Man #47(1972) is written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Barry Windsor  Smith. Iron Man #55 is one of the premiere buys as far as investments go. An anniversary issue pops up in Iron Man #100 (1977). This will cost you about the same amount for that origin issue number 47. Jumping ahead 18 issues later to Iron Man #118 (1979) the world was introduced to Jim Rhodes, a John Byrne issue. It takes Jim Rhodes 52 issues to get the nerve to put on the Iron Man suit in issue #170 (1983). Then the War Machine armor makes its first appearance in Iron Man #281, then War Machine first appears in Iron Man #282.
