As the new Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 movie hits, so does a new GOTG comic book(s) and cash cow Disney. Marvel will go on a twice monthly schedule with the ‘All-New’ title. The All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #1 is brought to you by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Aaron Kuder. The same Wednesday sees an all-star duo on Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy #1, writer Jim Starlin and artist Alan Davis. You have a movie to watch and two comics to buy.
Black Bolt gets his first solo series this week; Black Bolt #1, written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Christian Ward. We cannot help ourselves but to say, this series will come to a halt soon enough. Not because of anything bad really, but when the Inhumans television series comes out, a new number one will be presented. It’ll be (insert sarcasm here) Black Bolts’ second solo series!
Fanboys can begin their descend upon that mountain-top since climbing up there quite a few months ago. Secret Empire #1 comes out this Wednesday. Well the descend will be a bit slow because Marvel will probably push the proverbial envelope just a tad more before finally bringing Cap back to the Jedi side. The dark side has not only consumed our beloved Steve Rogers, but the fanbase have lost their minds dealing with Cap playing for Hydra this whole time, thus bring them to a dark place in their lives. Here’s the thing, and we were the first to say it when Steve uttered those words ‘ Hail Hydra’. Storytelling is subjective guys/gals. Anyone can devise a story and bring it forward, as long as it brings fannies back to the book to turn that page. Besides it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day because, we all know Cap is true Red, White and Blue and he will in fact be back eventually. Can we all relax a bit here? Let the story play out. Wait for the big hoopla 51 variant covers from Captain America’s new number one issue. It’s the 51 variants fans should be more annoyed about. Secret Empire #1; writer Nick Spencer, art Steve McNiven.
So many debuts from Marvel this week. Jean Grey #1; written by Dennis Hopeless and art by Victor Ibanez.
Spider-Gwen #19 will introduce a new character. Jason Latour (writer) and Robbi Rodriguez (artist) still doing their Spider-Gwen thing.

Batman #22 will have that special lenticular cover. Third of four comics to have this. Read our thoughts on these covers (and variants in general) in last weeks InvestComics Hot Picks #472.
Bane begins a twelve-issue maxi-series. (The 80’s old timers will know what a maxi-series is). Bane Conquest #1 written by Chuck Dixon and art by Graham Nolan.
Injustice 2 #1 takes place right before the Injustice 2 video game release. Written by Tom Taylor and art by Juan Albarran.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks:
Rob Liefeld’s Youngblood is coming back. The original Youngblood #1 came out in 1992. That’s 25 years ago. Feel old yet? The new series is written by Chad Bowers and art by Jim Towe. Artist Jim Towe is a a newbie in this business. His first comic book work (minus the hardcover book) came in December of 2016; Cyberforce Artifacts #0. Oh yea, and David Finch doing his amazing homage cover thing too.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 11/26/14

2116199 2116208 2116412There will be plenty of new reading material and speculation material to check out this Wednesday. A bunch of number one issues make their way to the InvestComics Hot Picks this week.

The Spider-Man family makes their impact felt with sale numbers. Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors (2014) Marvel Universe #1 Is already not available at a major on line comic shop, which means the book is already making waves. Scarlet Spiders (2014) #1 is just about sold out at Diamond, so definitely a book to get your hands on. And Spider-Man 2099 (2014) #6 continues the highly successful Spider-Verse story line. A good week indeed for the Spider-Man universe and fans alike.

Death comes in two’s this week. Check out Deathstroke (2014 DC 2nd Series) #2 this week. It has the new character Odysseus as its 1399804_xl 2114075 2116268focal point and artist Tony Daniel continues to kill it. And why is Mr. Daniel still not a superstar is beyond comprehension. He was mentioned here on InvestComics many years ago during his spectacular Batman run. He was mentioned many times thereafter. This guy is a superstar, so lets all start paying attention and act accordingly. No reason why fans should be able to just walk up to this guy during a comic convention (no line). Deathlok #1 showed some strong sales as is Deathlok (2014 4th Series) #2. Deathlok right now is a hot comic. The big question will be; can the character hold his own? Will the hammer fall down on this series eventually? Hopefully not.

Batman Eternal writer Ray Fawkes gives fans a new Batman flavor this week; Gotham By Midnight (2014) #1An awesome $20 variant by Andrea Sorrentino accompanies the new release.

2059172 2061308 Darkseid will be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Thanos eventually down the road on the big screen. Besides getting his first appearance, which still has upside if bought at a normal rate and not an inflated one, a collector should be gathering up early appearances of Darkseid. This week in Infinity Man and the Forever People (2014) #5 readers will be treated to Mecha-Darkseid. Don’t really recall seeing too much of Mecha-Darkseid around……

Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #7 hits on the origins of The Huntress, The Flash, and Superboy. Always a great read and interesting tidbits you may not have known about your favorite characters.

Two giant comics to have on your radar this week, The amazingly hot Enormous (2014) Ongoing #5 and then there is that company that InvestComics has been telling readers about for quite a while now; Action Lab Entertainment. These guys are putting out some quality. 2115281 2116991Check out Planet Gigantic (2014 Action Lab) #1. Sales are looking at a sold out comic very soon. It’s just a matter of time before one of these Action Lab comics completely blows up.

Hawkeye’s Matt Fraction brings his own creation to Image Comics this Wednesday. The far out experience is called Ody-C (2014 Images) #1. The colors dude, some many colors……

Other number one issues to check out this week; Toe Tag Riot (2014 Black Mask) #1, Separators (2014) #1, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014 Boom) #1, Madman In Your Face 3D Special (2014 Image) #1, and Angry Birds Transformers (2014 IDW) #1.

See you soon. Invest wisely.

2114000Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 9-14-11 (DC Comics Relaunch Special Part 2)

Welcome to InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for the second part of our DC Relaunch Specials.

Last week DC owned the comic shops across the globe. This week, and the following weeks ahead will be no different. As we did last week, InvestComics will cover every number one issue including first appearances, number one issues, and the collector’s price for each. Once again, a special thanks to Comics Price for providing the pricing for the wonderful crop of comics this week. We’ll keep the trend in Part 2 here and go from High to Low…..

Two words, Green Lantern. Two more words, Geoff Johns. There is absolutely no denying what Geoff johns has done for this character. Green Lantern is a force within the DC Universe and so are these numbers coming up. Reach deep in those pockets friends.

Green Lantern #1 – We’re going to cover most of the Lanterns first appearances for you! The drop off from the very first Lantern to the second is quite alarming. Actually, the drop off between each of the Lantern’s is quite noticeable. The first ever Lantern came with Alan Scott bearing the ring in All American Comics #16 1940. This comic is 71 years old. 71 years of age for a human being is not old age in today’s society in some cases, considering the conditioning of some folks in this day in age, but for a comic book? That’s old! To own a piece of the oldest ring bearer out there, you’re looking at least $300,000. Looking to save a few bucks? Look for the fan favorite second Lantern Hal Jordan in Showcase #22 from 1959. Only 19 years later and coming in some 275 thousand cheaper! Yes that’s right, GL Hal cost $25,000. Guy Gardner first appearance is Green Lantern #59 1968. Gil Kane art in this issue for only $280. Next up we have the first appearance of the first African American Green Lantern John Stewart in GL #87 from 1971. As Guy Gardner’s first comic was penciled by a legend, John Stewart’s was also penciled by a legend, Neal Adams. Only $180 for this one. We’ll round out the list with Kyle Rayner. Kyle’s first appearance was in GL #48 (1994) for only $6.

Legion Lost #1 – Adventure Comics #247 (1958) has the first appearance of Legion for what seems like an expensive $14000.

Superboy #1 – The majority of society will probably know that Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1. Well what about the “boy”? As in Superboy? Wonder no more, InvestComics has it covered. The first Superboy appeared in 1945 in a comic called More Fun Comics #101. A comparison of the first Superman and Superboy comics would be ridiculous and besides, they aren’t even in the same Krypton galaxy as far as pricing goes. Pony up $12,000 and that’ll get you the 1st Superboy. Pony up $1.6 million….well you know what that’ll get ya.

Suicide Squad #1 – Get the Squads first in Brave and the Bold #25 (1959) for $750. Like Legions first, this too seems a bit on the heavy side.

Demon Knights #1 – Does this title belong in the Marvel Knights line? Get Demon’s  1st appearance in his self titled “Jack King Kirby” Demon #1 (1972) for $60. This comic should be on any collectors buy list. If it’s not in your collection, it should be.

Deathstroke #1 – Speaking of being on your “buy list”, The New Teen Titans #2 (1980) should be on there. This nugget happened to be at the very beginning of the decade that began the craziness of the collectors market. The good thing about this comic is that it missed the overprinting, 800 variant, 3D, glow in the dark covers era. It’s a scarce copy of a comic that features an extremely underrated DC Universe character. Why Deathstroke is not as big if not bigger than Marvel’s Deadpool is a huge mystery. Maybe this number one issue will breathe some life into this character that it so richly deserves. Maybe a movie DC? Hello? Chop chop……. At only $48, this comic is THE InvestComics DC Relaunch Special Hot Pick of the week!

Here’s the rest of the pack, at single digit prices.

Batman and Robin #1 – Deciding not to go with Batman and Robin’s first team up, we’ll save that for Tim’s first appearance, but for now we’ll look at Robin in THIS book; Damian. Damian’s first appearance (as a baby) is in 1987’s Batman Son of the Demon – one shot($6). Resurrection Man #1 – 1st appeared with his self titled book in 1997 with character Mitchell Shelly. Pick this up for $5. Batwoman #1 – Kate Kane dons the costume in the latest female bat book. Check out Kate Kane’s first appearance in 52 #9(2006). Then Kate wears that sexy outfit for the first time 2 issues later in 52 #11(2006). Both comics are $4 each. Mr. Terrific #1 – Mr. Terrific? Was this comic really necessary? Anyway, find The Spectre #54 (1997) and you’ll be the proud owner the first Michael Holt, a.k.a Mr. Terrific. Red Lanterns #1 – Atrocitus leads the way in the new Red Lantern book. Check out the first appearance of big A in Green Lantern 28 (2008) a la’ Geoff Johns.  Get this little gem for only $3.

And rounding out this week with a look in the $1 bin, Grifter #1 –  Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.s Covert Action Teams #1 (1992) earns you a first appearance of Grifter. Then the final piece of this DC Relaunch madness is Frankenstein Agent of Shade #1. Wow Frankenstein? Really?? Maybe Mr. Terrific had something to do with this. Check out DC’s first Frankie in Detective Comics #195 (1948) for $1200. (Editor note:Frankenstein 1st appearance was a late correction)

That’s it for this week. We’ll see you next week with another round of InvestComics Comic Hot Picks DC Relaunch Special.

Invest wisely.

Jay Katz

DC #1s for the SUPER-family, SUICIDE SQUAD, and BLUE BEETLE.

DC has announced some more #1s (are there any more? I dunno) Including the SUPERMAN family books,  with two decidedly different takes on the Man of Steel by Perez and Morrison/Morales, A new SUICIDE SQUAD with some decidedly different takes on KING SHARK, DEADHSOT, and HARLEY QUINN, and a one title that has this IC reporter in a quandry…I LOVE Tony Bedard’s writing (and he’s a good guy), but we all know I’m a TED KORD guy. Well, Tony Bedard is writing the new BLUE BEETLE ongoing…and it’s Jaime Reyes as Beetle. Now, when I expressed my mixed feelings on facebook, Tony graciously thanked me for my compliments to him, and simply asked that I “…give Jaime a chance.”

So, we’ll see. But I still miss you, Ted!

A new era of DC Comics begins as the longest-running monthly comic of all time releases its first issue #1 since 1938.

This September, New York Times bestselling writer Grant Morrison (ALL-STAR SUPERMAN) joins with sensational artist Rags Morales to bring you tales of The Man of Tomorrow unlike any you’ve ever read before in ACTION COMICS #1. This momentous first issue will set in motion the history of the DC Universe as Superman defends a world that doesn’t trust their first Super Hero.

The first Action Comics #1 is now the most sought-after comic book of all time. This September, one of comics’ most imaginative storytellers will make history again in Grant Morrison and Rags Morales’ ACTION COMICS #1.

Superman #1: The Man of Tomorrow, Today

What is Superman’s startling new status quo? How does it affect his friends, loved ones and his job at The Daily Planet? Find out in SUPERMAN #1, written by legendary comics creator George Perez (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, NEW TEEN TITANS and WONDER WOMAN) and illustrated by Jesus Merino.

Supergirl #1 and Superboy #1: The New Superman Family

Supergirl’s got the unpredictable behavior of a teenager, the same powers as Superman and none of his affection for the people of Earth. Writers Michael Green and Mike Johnson (Smallville, SUPERMAN/BATMAN) will team up with artist Mahmud Asrar to give a new take on the teenager from Krypton in SUPERGIRL #1.

They thought he was just a failed experiment, grown from a combination of Kryptonian and human DNA. But when the scope of his stunning powers was revealed, he became a deadly weapon. SUPERBOY #1 will be written by Scott Lobdell with art by R.B. Silva and Rob Lean.

It’s not easy being Jaime Reyes. He has to deal with high school, family and all the drama that comes with being a teenager. Also, he’s linked to a powerful scarab created by an alien race who seek to subjugate planets – or annihilate them. It’s up to one teen hero to turn this instrument of destruction into a force for good in BLUE BEETLE #1, written by Tony Bedard (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) and illustrated by Ig Guara (FLASHPOINT: GRODD OF WAR) and Ruy Jose.

Harley Quinn! Deadshot! King Shark! They’re a team of death-row super villains recruited by the government to take on missions so dangerous – they’re sheer suicide! Who will be the first to crack under the pressure? Find out in SUICIDE SQUAD #1, written by Adam Glass (FLASHPOINT: LEGION OF DOOM) with art by Marco Rudy (THE SHIELD).

DC has offered up this peek at today’s SUPERBOY #7, in which Kon-El wakes up to discover that apparently he’s done a bad bad thing.

Ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Well, have you ever woken up to discover that you’ve given in to your evil side and taken over your hometown? Superboy has. And as much as he wishes it were just a dream, the stakes are all too real! Guest-starring Lex Luthor, Tim Drake, and introducing “The New Titans!”

  • 32pg.
  • Color
  • $2.99 US

DC is offering this sneak peek at this week’s ACTION COMICS #900. It’s…dare I say…Action packed! Plus, it’s one of this week’s InvestComics HOT PICKS.

Written by PAUL CORNELL, RICHARD DONNER, DAVID GOYER, DAMON LINDELOF and more; Art by PETE WOODS, JESUS MERINO and more; Cover by DAVID FINCH; 1:5 Variant cover A by ADAM HUGHES; 1:5 Variant cover B by ALEX ROSS

Superman returns to ACTION COMICS just in time for the title’s historic 900th issue, which clocks in at 100 pages! InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 3-9-11

Marvel_CrossGenInvestComics Comic Hot Picks 3-9-11

We’re off to the races this week. Well not really, but Superboy and kid Flash are! More on that in a bit. Last week InvestComics Comic Hot Picks mentioned that Martin Pierro of Comic Times was going to appear on InvestComics TV. Instead Letter extraordinaire Jaymes Reed appeared! So THIS Wednesday, guess who is appearing on InvestComics TV? That’s right Martin Pierro of Cosmic Times! Great company, great comics, and a great guy.

DC has a race going on this week. It’s Superboy vs. Kid Flash. It’s the first time they will ever race. And from the looks of the previews pages on InvestComics, right here, it looks like it’s going to be a blast. DC first had a famous race back in 1967 in Superman #199. This classic issue is the 2 fastest heroes in the DC Universe going head to head in the very first race ever, Superman vs. Flash. The famous issue and race will cost you about $600, a beauty of an issue to have within your collection.

Marvel’s hostile takeover of CrossGen Entertainment finally comes to light this week. No it wasn’t a hostile takeover, just sounded cool. Marvel bought the rights to all of CrossGen’s property. This week Marvel tackles their first CrossGen character, Sigil. All of the CrossGen characters first appeared in CrossGen Genesis. That nifty little comic is only $8, while Sigil’s first solo comic, which first arrived as a customer review copy as Sigil #1 goes for $5. With Marvel at the helm, and with these strong character backgrounds that CrossGen put together, IF Marvel maintains the strength of this line, Sky’s the limit here. Look for an expansion into cartoons and even movies. So for $8 you receive full ownership of the first appearance of every CrossGen character. Not a bad buy at all.

More secrets abound in New Avengers #10. Don’t miss it! And everyone’s favorite black costume is back. Venom #1 comes out this Wednesday. Does he deserve his own book? We’ll see…..

That’s it for this week…..And this Wednesday, Martin Pierro of Cosmic Times on InvestComics TV. Check it out!

Amazing Spider-Man #647 will bring the “Brand New Day” story to a close. What will be the end game with this storyline? We wait with anticipation! Speaking of anticipation, one of Marvel’s baddest villains has his own number issue coming out this week. Check out Bullseye: Perfect Game #1 from the awesome team of  Charlie Huston, Shawn Martinbrough, and Tim Bradstreet. Bullseye’s first appearance came back in 1976 in Daredevil #131. This will only set you back $120 if you want it. A very popular but underrated villain from the Daredevil gallery for $120 is a bargain. Look for the Perfect Game book to have a good Wednesday, especially from a creative team as good as it gets.
A new X team book will be arriving, and you should check it out. Generation Hope #1 will be a quick sellout, so get your copy quick if you don’t feel like reading a second print.
DC’s extra sized Batman Confidential #50 brings Jerry Bingham back to a Batman book since 2006. Jerry did the Batman: Son of the Demon book. If you to check out Jerry Bingham’s Demon book, it’ll only cost you $6. Superboy goes for his fourth go around with Superboy Vol 4 #1. Look for this series to start off very hot like the previous 3 did. And finally, The Boys #48 pays some nice homage to Miller’s Dark Knight.
