The offspring of Supes and Bats have made quite the name for themselves these days. So enter DC’s next big hit series, Super Sons #1. Could you imagine if DC/Warner Bros ever got their act together and made an amazing “Spielberg” feel/type of Super Sons film? It would appeal to everyone. Everyone, meaning tapping the young audience and female audience. It would be the equivalent of Marvel’s Power Pack. We said it years ago about Power Pack for Marvel, what is Disney waiting for? Super Sons #1 from writer Peter J Tomasi and artist Jorge Jimenez.
Jim Lee’s Wildstorm will be reintroduced to comic book fans. This time as Wild Storm. They made a bold new change and made Wildstorm two words. Crazy right?? Anyway, Wild Storm #1 will bring writer Warren Ellis on board along with artist Jon Davis-Hunt. Creator of Wildstorm, Jim Lee, has a variant accompanying the big release, but it’s the regular Jon Davis-Hunt cover that will have fans really turning their heads.

We pointed out the love we had for the new DC Odyssey Of The Amazons series. We also pointed out the possible plethora of new characters that will appear within this series. This Wednesday, Odyssey Of The Amazons #2 will be more of the same. Great storytelling and new characters, what more does one need?
A new story begins in Justice League #15, ‘Timeless’. A possible first appearance here. The new storyline will be brought to us by Bryan Hitch (writer) and Fernando Pasarin (artist).

Firestorm #1

IC 100 Club Pick – Firestorm #1 (1978) – Click to Buy Now

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Most of the time, some of the more obscure titles make their way onto Ebay later on in the week or right on/at/before new comic book day on Wednesday. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

This week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Firestorm #1 9.0 (1978). This graded 9.0 is only $75 with free shipping. With Firestorm as popular as he is, this comic is a great buy. Yes the speculative market has calmed down a bit since the character was ultra hot at one time, but now is a perfect time to get back in the market and buy this fantastic first appearance. Who knows, maybe DC’s new “Rebirth” will include Firestorm in his own title (again), but this time they gain momentum on his popular status once again. It really doesn’t matter if nothing happens to be honest, this is a good buy for the first appearance at only 75 bucks…….and free shipping!

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

As InvestComics pointed out last week regarding Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #1. We spoke about the starring cast with Deadpool and it seems as though we were on to something (as usual). This Wednesday’s Deadpool #7 will feature some backup stories pertaining to those exact characters we gave everyone a heads up on! We won’t say told you so…….yet.
It will be an anniversary issue as well. 25 years of Deadpool. That was a quick 25, time is flying by! So what should Disney do to cash in on the monster Deadpool movie coming out next week? Put out a special limited edition Deadpool book? Give fans a hostile takeover on various Marvel covers (that’s ongoing right now actually). How about a price point at $9.99? Yes, this sounds right. Awesome! Granted it’s an “anniversary” issue at 96 pages, but $9.99? Marvel/Disney are some smart suits aren’t they?! Make that money!

A plethora of variants (all starting at $9.99) accompany this issue, but one standout cover already catches our eye. The best part? It’s the regular cover! (Even though we’re looking at $9.99 across the board) Artist Tony Moore lets Wade Wilson have his way with the Walking Dead #1 cover. Very unique cover from Tony, we’re a buy here regardless of the bit*hing we’ve done.

If you’re a regular reader here, you’ll already know about this, but it’s been a little while since we mentioned it to the current speculators/readers. Buy Star Wars comics. There are introductions going on in some books that may seem meaningless now, but if one of these characters ever find their way to the screen or even have their own successful spinoff comic, you’ll be unhappy that you didn’t take our advice. Besides all that, and more importantly, they’re great reads. Check out Darth Vader #16 as this series begins a new story arc.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Learn more about the new villain Espectro in Silk #4. Espectro first appeared in the previous issue.
It looks as though a villain will be getting a makeover in All New All Different Avengers #5. It’s always great when comic companies change the look of one of their characters and then watch the fanboys lose their minds.

Scott Snyder is wrapping up his Batman run and Batman #49 promises some big plot lines about to put a bow on everything.
DC’s Batman Arkham Knight Batgirl And Harley Quinn #1 will reprint Batman Arkham Knight #1: Batgirl Begins (2015) from last year. Apparently DC feels the need to slap Harley Quinn on almost anything these days to get some attention **ahem Deadpool**. Although a lame tactic, DC knows how to get revenue streaming and money is how businesses stay in business. Too bad for anyone that doesn’t understand this. Check out the cover here too, the exact same one as Batman Arkham Knight #1: Batgirl Begins (2015), but with a circle cutout of Harley’s face. Not too sure if THIS particular comic is in fact the giveaway or not DC is talking about in their solicit, but either way it’s the first Arkham Knight Batgirl appearance.

Image Comics’ Descender #10 will introduce a new character named ‘Queen Between.’ For real, we didn’t make that up. Make sure you have your Descender comics in order because Sony pictures has the rights all wrapped up and will release a movie.

More great indie’s to pick up this Wednesday……
Badger #1 from Devils Due Publishing. This character had it firing on some cylinders a bit back in the 80’s. Badger #1 (1983) was from a company called Capital Comics. They went out of business and First Comics then picked up the series. Lasting 70 issues and then an array of restarts from different outlets thereafter. The number one issue from 1983 on Ebay is mega cheap. A fantastic series back in the day.

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

This week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Bloodshot #6 (1993) graded 9.8. This comic is the first appearance of Ninjak. Valiant Entertainment is on the cusp of breaking loose within the film industry. Although the Joker’s Daughter has appeared in the previous 2 issues of Red Hood Arsenal, she gets the front cover this week on Red Hood Arsenal #8. It’s been a little while since we’ve seen her grace a cover in an almost solo capacity. With DC using the character a bit more these days, are they gearing up for a mega-push? It’s quite possible. The female hero/villain in comic books is a hot commodity for many comic publishers these days. DC might push for this particular female character to get going. Get Catwoman #23 (2013) and Catwoman #24 (2013) now before it’s way too too late. That is the cameo and first appearance of Joker’s Daughter. Some low rates for these comics on Ebay right now. Get em!

Wonder Woman fans will have a new series to check out this Wednesday. Legend Of Wonder Woman #1 will be a 9 issue mini-series.
DC Comics over the course of the last couple of weeks have been releasing “adult coloring book” variant covers like Starfire #8. Although they do resemble sketch variants, these are ones that DC encourages us “adults” to color on. Why exactly? How many “adults” are really going to do this?
Speaking of covers, we’re really digging the Robin War #2 incentive cover by Lee Bermejo.

The Walking Dead reaches its 150th issue this week. There are so many variants it’s hard to keep up, but there is one we want to talk about. Besides the ultra cool Ryan Ottley variant cover, Tony Moore contributes a variant. Yes THAT Tony Moore. the co-creator of The Walking Dead. The last time Tony penciled a cover for the regular ongoing Walking Dead series was back in 2005; The Walking Dead #24. The Walking Dead #150 will be an obvious huge seller, but the Tony Moore variant is the prize. Did we mention it’s sold out already? Better get yours if you want one. Oh and one more thing, InvestComics may have a HUGE contest in regards to this comic in the works. Stay tuned to our Facebook page AND our Contest section on the site right HERE. It may happen, it may not, but IF it does, Walking Dead fans will love it!

The new Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 comic will be based on the television series. If you’re a fan of the television series, this comic is for you! If not, this comic is NOT for you! Simple enough right? This series has no chance on the longevity scale at all. The television series will not last as long as Bonanza did and the comic series will succumb before that TV series does eventually. We’re not hating on the series, but it will thin out as most of these types of shows do. Let’s face it, they’re not bringing it like the DC television shows are. Flash, Green Arrow, and Gotham. As we pointed out last week with the random Doctor Strange #4 Deadpool variant, must be some stalled sales going on there to throw Deadpool on a variant like that. Well within the plethora of Agents variants, Mark Bagley provides a Deadpool variant. Very random once again. Very unnecessary, but a great cover nonetheless.

Deadpool also appears on a very funny variant cover from Tom Raney. Check out All-New Wolverine #4. The cover is a take on the Batman slapping Robin meme that floats around all of social media.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Another Deadpool variant; Guardians Of The Galaxy #4 shows Deadpool riding on some sort of Mindcraft thingy. If you don’t know what Mindcraft is, Google it. If Marvel ever decides to take on the license of Mindcraft (maybe it already has it? Who knows?), this comic is the first Mindcraft Marvel. Maybe the first Mindcraft deal in all of comics? Haven’t seen other references, so help us out if you have. **(Update – apparently Deadpool is riding an Internet meme called a nyan cat. Thanks to Barry W for clarifying this).

Silk #3 J Scott Campbell variant cover is sold out.

If you’re in the market for an all out “magic” comic book, then IDW’s Gutter Magic #1 is for you. Witness an all out magic war set in New York City. Brought to you by writer Rich Douek and artist Brett Barkley. Great storytelling and great art. This will be a hit for IDW Publishing.

Also from IDW this Wednesday, Luna The Vampire #1. This will be a fun comic to check out.

An original Kickstarter campaign starter becomes a regular monthly title from Dark Horse Comics. Leaving Megalopolis Surviving Megalopolis #1 is written by Gail Simone with pencils by Jim Calafiore. The original concept of the “heroes” in this book stop being good guys and become very bad. Writer Gail Simone will bring us a great tale because she can flat out write. And veteran artist Jim Calafiore is showcasing some of his best work ever. This looks like a great read, a must get.

Aside from the obvious success of the Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman has amassed quite the career thus far. This Creator Spotlight will not focus on the Walking Dead comics Robert has done because InvestComics has already covered most of them throughout the years. We’re going to focus on his body of work besides TWD, which is quite impressive to say the least. A young career, but yet so vast.

Here’s the latest installment of long lost since forgotten comic books. Many of these comics are simply not spoken of anymore and SOME of these have no monetary value in the speculative market, but do have a place in our hearts. Great stories and amazing creative talents accompany most of these books. Into the abyss these comics have gone, but here they are once again. Buy them, read them, they’re fun.

Click the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on the books in this article.

Star Brand #1 (1986) Here’s a series that went no where fast. So fast in fact that issue number 19 was the last issue ; “number 19 in a 19 issue limited series.” Really?? Okay. This happened with almost all of the other titles as well when it came to Marvel’s New Universe imprint. Most  say “#32 of a 32 issue Limited Series.” on the top of the book. No lie, true story.

But even the creative firepower couldn’t save this series from its ultimate demise. John Romita Jr. does most of the art and a cover or two for about the first seven issues. Writer Roy Thomas on issue number seven, Keith Giffen art in issue number 9 with a Bob Wiacek cover, issue number ten features Mark Bagley Pencils, and then legend John Byrne takes over art and writing duties as of issue number eleven. And good luck finding that scarce last issue too.

Union Jack #1 (1998) Union Jack’s first solo series comic. Writer/artist and cover all by John Cassaday. When will a UK based character break out anyway? It will happen eventually (as InvestComics has said a while back), but here you have a great 3 part mini-series to read. One of the cool things about the Marvel Comics cover with issue number one is the wording “The Walking Dead”. That’s five years before the Kirkman book. Speaking of which…….

The Walking Dead #1 (1989) Are you aware there was a Walking Dead comic out 14 years prior to Kirkman’s Walking Dead? A four issue zombie horror comic. If you were, kudos to you. If not, now you’re in the know. The Walking Dead #1 from 1989 was put out by Aircel Comics and created by Jim Somerville. Issue number 3 features a Dale Keown cover! Sweet. Good luck finding any of these comics at your local shop.

Black Orchid (1988) Critically acclaimed 3 part series by artist Dave Mckean and writer Neil Gaiman.

Blade Runner (1982) With all of the talking going on regarding another Blade Runner movie, wouldn’t it be cool to get this comic in a 50 cent bin and have it signed/graded by Harrison Ford? A nice collectors item indeed. You’re welcome.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world.  Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty retailers may be included as well.

Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.

The New Titles Count Chart includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.

It’s a huge week for Thor fans and speculators alike. Thor #8 will reveal who has been wielding the Mjolnir. Who is she? Is the question every comic fans wants to know. Thor #8 promises to reveal a shocking return as well. Which will be more shocking, the female behind the mask or the return? There will be a huge guest line up to help with the dramatics here. Everyone looks on as the mask is slowly taken off. Awesome storytelling to come here, very exciting.

Here is the bigger question for speculators out there regarding this book. Once the reveal happens, then what? Do you run and get the first appearance of that particular character? Do you hold onto the comic for longevity monetary gains? The answer is……no on longevity, yes on short term. Yes on the first appearance, yes on short term. Yes on short if it’s a non-female draw character. If it’s a Jane Foster character, that’s not a short term investment. Journey into Mystery #84 (1962) is the second appearance of Thor and first Jane Foster. You simply do not short term on that book.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Essentially what the speculator needs to do here is sell while the aftermarket explodes. Do not hold onto this comic thinking she will appear in a movie, a television show or her time as Thor will even sustain. Yes she’s been a kick as* Thor, but the love fest will lose momentum eventually. It’s extremely rare over the last 40+ years since comic companies have tried its hand in changing a gender does it ever work for long term. Maybe this character will. Maybe Thor-ette will break the mold and become a huge success. I certainly do not foresee this happening. Been wrong before! No one is perfect. So InvestComics’ speculation here calls for quick and concise sells, do not hold, you may get stuck with books that wind up in the dollar boxes. Will still be a fantastic read regardless of any speculation.

Secret Wars #2 is gearing up to completely annihilate the entire Marvel Universe to make room for a new one. Check out Battleworld in issue number two and what it basically is. The origin of a new Marvel Universe is upon us with a ton of variants for this issue. It’s going to be a long ride with this one, so strap in. We’ll see when all of the dust settles months from now what we are left with. In the meantime, be alert of any new characters popping up during the transition process.

And speaking of new characters. Darth Vader #5 will show some new Vader foes. You know how InvestComics feels about the new Marvel Star Wars books. Buy them all. Just ONE of them, be it a variant (more money to make), maybe not a variant or a graded/signed (even more money to possibly make) could pay for a few Bronze Age issues you really need in your collection. Just ONE, that’s all it takes. The first Aphra appearance (we gave you a heads up) in Darth Vader #3 did just that for some. Its since cooled off, but many speculators cashed in on it. Buy Marvel Star Wars comics. Read them, they’re great.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

A few Image Comics to check out this week. Mantle #1 is a straight up superhero comic. Remember those? And right, it has nothing to do with Mickey. The Phil Hester variant is a get. Also from Phil this week is Mythic #1. He writes this magic/mythic comic. InvestComics said this quite a while ago, but as the Dr. Strange movie draws closer and closer, we’ll see more and more of these magic books. Not a bad thing, but remember when The Walking Dead was at its height? Too many zombie books, so expect the same here. A $1.99 price point makes for happy comic book buyers. Injection #1; written by Warren Ellis will see sellouts. This interesting story will appeal to fans and its Warren Ellis so its a win. A Great Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire cover helps too. Staying on topic of a great writer, Cullen Bunn will give fans a horror genre book; Harrow County #1. Probably looking at a sellout here too. Two followups this week regarding number one issues that sold well; Savior #2 (written by Todd McFarlane) and Runlovekill #2. Good starts, now lets read to see where these series are headed. And finally from Image, mythology fans will enjoy Five Ghost Special #1.

Look for Boom Studios to have a hit on their hands with Lantern City #1. Story by Paul Jenkins and Matthew Daley. Four variants are available at last count.

Injustice Gods Among Us Year Four #1 variant is sold out. What does this mean exactly? It means that the variant is sold out.

Quick lesson here (free for InvestComics readers). One way to always tell if something is not working out is by the way things look….literally. When a set on a late show is constantly changed, it means producers are looking for a fresh look, change things up because it’s not working out too well. Getting new advertising dollars in or keeping the current guy in is the game. New look, give us money! After a while, that marketing ploy runs its course and eventually bye-bye. DC comics has changed course how many times now with Superman’s costume, Wonder Woman, etc. It shows the chaotic means to maximize the dollar for them. We all see by the reaction to most fans that change isn’t always a good thing. Not a bad thing either by any stretch, but do it too often and you lose your audience (money). Maybe a case in point with the new Angela Asgard’s Assassin #6  issue. Angela gets a new costume. Already? How many times will this happen before readers don’t care anymore? Readers don’t care now! Marvel might be, not saying this as fact, might be trying to renew interest in a character that they just brought over to their universe because fans are tired of Angela already and sales are down? Maybe. Either way, who cares really?! New costume for Angela, enjoy the read.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

…..And DC continues their marketing plan with more Convergence comics. As said almost each week here why we think this is a big marketing campaign for DC. In short, many characters and groups are being brought back from obscurity. Why? Maybe to test the waters to see if they have the potential of monies to be made on new product. Pure speculation here. Let’s get to the Convergence titles…..

Starfire Starfire oh how bright you will shine. This is an exclusive poem from InvestComics. We hope DC will pay us royalties once they use it. Starfire will shine very bright when her solo comic arrives. Expect big things with storytelling and the aftermarket when it hits. This week in Convergence Green Arrow #2, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palimotti will write a Starfire backup with art by Emanuela Lupacchino. This will be the exact creative team that will work on the ongoing Starfire series next month. This comic will be the first Starfire from this team, not the number one issue next month. So when the number one issue is exploding in the aftermarket as it will (please credit InvestComics when acting as though you knew it would), Convergence Green Arrow #2 should go along for the ride right? So a few things here. Buy Convergence Green Arrow #2, buy DC Comics Presents #26 (1980 – First New Teen Titans and Starfire) and buy Starfire #1 next month. And more thing, just for the record, artist Emanuela Lupacchino is the real deal. She flat out brings it. Watch out for her!

Thor_8_InvestComics_variantConvergence Batman Shadow of the Bat #2 will bring back the original Wetworks team from the Wildstorm days. That was fun back then. Wetworks first appeared in WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams #2 (1992). And the rest of your Convergence titles; Convergence #6, Convergence Aquaman #2, Convergence Catwoman #2, Convergence Green Lantern Parallax #2, Convergence Justice League International #2, Convergence Suicide Squad #2, Convergence Superboy #2, Convergence Supergirl Matrix #2, Convergence Superman Man of Steel #2.

Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty stores may be included as well.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

Please note that comics marked with an asterisk have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.

The count of new titles shipped includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks

indexMarvel_Feature_1_(1971)Before heading right into this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks, there are a few comics that have been highlighted over the past week or so on InvestComics that need some love. Well not love so much, but some undivided attention. I’d like to point them out in this article so that speculators can plan accordingly during a slower week like this one.

News from director Zack Synder confirmed that Nightwing (aka Dick Grayson) will in fact appear in the new Superman sequel yet unofficially titled Batman vs. Superman. Great news for the comic book fans, but not so much on the collectors/speculators side. How so you may ask? Well, Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing in Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (1984) and the problem with this classic comic is the one thing no hobby enthusiasts likes to hear……overprint. This comic is so easily accessible it’s not even funny. While the overprint shouldn’t deter you to still own this comic (how do you not own it already??), do realize that the aftermarket will be inundated with the first appearance of Nightwing as it already is. Great comic, too bad there are too many copies are floating around. There is however a way to get a little more bang for your buck, but you should know how to do this already…..

InvestComics reported on Marvel teaming up with Netflix for their next venture onto the small screen. It involves Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage getting television shows and all leading up to a “Defenders” mini-series. How lucky can a comic book fan be these days?! A comic that must be in your collection and is a beauty is the first appearance of the Defenders team in Marvel Feature #1 (1971). There is nothing more to say……..buy this comic book!

With the recent success of the Arrow television show for the folks over at the CW station, they are once again looking at the DC catalog and have found iZombie. Zombies are hot for reasons that are obvious, but will it equate to the demise, the watering down of the genre? We’ll have izombiePreacher_1to wait and see. Until then, you already missed out by digging in the $1 bins at your local shop for the first DC/Vertigo iZombie #1 (2010) when InvestComics broke the news, so now the question is how much of a risk are you willing to take on this comic? You have two options here. Go for the first appearance of iZombie in House of Mystery Halloween Annual #1 (2009) which has sold for more than $50 on Ebay or the iZombie #1 comic that has sold for as high as $25. Big risk here because this series is no Walking Dead and the zombie genre will eventually settle down some. What if the television series craps out? Too many risk factors with this one here.

And possibly the best news to come out from television land came late last night on InvestComics. The once very hot Preacher series from DC/Vertigo will be considered for a pilot from AMC. A Preacher #1 (1995) CGC 9.8 sold yesterday on Ebay for $185. If you have this comic, I urge you to get it graded and sit on it. It’s going to be a big book. The comic series was a rousing success and there is no reason to think that the (possible) television series wouldn’t be either. Writer Garth Ennis brings his “A” game to everything he’s involved with. The highly successful Preacher series is evidence of this. IF the Preacher gets its own TV show, Preacher #1 will be a comic to own, big time.

In the “In case you missed it department”

In association with Ratchet City Comics, InvestComics will be celebrating the InvestComics Hot Picks #300 in a BIG way! The 300th InvestComics Hot Picks will be coming out the same week as Christmas, so on December 25th, Christmas day, we will be giving away a Star Wars #1 (2013 – Dark Horse) CGC Signature Series graded 9.6 Signed by writer Brian Wood!! Believe it or not A Plus X (2012 Marvel Now) #14 will lead the way this week. It’s with good reason of course. The issue finds Max Bemis conducting writing duties. Why and who is Max? Well he’s a comic book fan and is also the front man in a rock band called Say Anything. He’s also the co-singer in a band called Two Tongues. I have to admit, I have absolutely no idea who the bands are or who Max is, but the kids tell me they know him and them! So why exactly are we talking about this comic again? Oh yeah, this is Max’s first published comic book work. The last time a rock dude crossed over, all hell broke loose for a little bit. Let me remind you……Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance)? Umbrella Academy? Oh yes that! You remember now. So check out A + X #14 and see if Max pulls off a keeper here.

Harley Quinn begins her quest this week in her own regular series; starting with Harley Quinn (2013) #0. We all know by now that Harley first appeared in the Batman: Harley Quinn (1999) soft cover graphic novel. That classic Alex Ross cover is forever etched in our minds. So that comic is probably already filed away in your Bat box someplace. This week however, the Harley Quinn #0 Stephane Roux variant cover is sold out. Buying this comic will set you back $30, but how long can Harley really hold her own though? Maybe we’ll get an answer to that question sooner rather than later.

Battlestar Galactica always seems to be that red-headed step child doesn’t it? (No offense to red-heads! My sister is a red-head!). It’s always been that show that just can’t seem to get out of its own way. The first television series back in 1978 lasted two seasons, the second series lasted a whopping 4 seasons, and the original Marvel Comics series lasted 23 issues. No major motion picture, no talks of ever taking Battlestar to another level. Very odd no? Well maybe not. Maybe it’s just not a strong franchise. Yes, maybe it’s time to accept that Battlestar is not Star Trek, Star Wars, or even Stargate; Space 1999 maybe, but not any of the aforementioned. The intention here is not to bash Battlestar, but to find an understanding as to why so many failed attempts at a space series that has such a huge following. Dynamite hasn’t given up on BG though! This week Battlestar Galactica Starbuck (2013 Dynamite) #1 is on the cusp of a sell-out. That’s right fans, there is still a core audience that demands BG and Dynamite is here to provide it! Looks like a fun read!

Forever Evil Rogues Rebellion (2013) #2 variant is sold out. It’s only a $10 variant and it’ll probably stay put right there. There is nothing special about this comic at all except an exceptionally weak villain in Parasite wreaking havoc. A fun story, but nothing for the speculator here.

Although Superior Spider-Man (2012) Annual #1 might be sold out by the next new comic book day, it still has that “Annual” stigma attached to it. The Marvel solict  says “this one counts!” Even they realize the stigma attached. It’s far and few between that any comic book annuals make an impact on the hobby. They do exist, but not on a level of any expectations that collectors clamor for. In the Superior Spider-Man annual #1 though, we see the return of Blackout. The Blackout villain first appeared in Nova #19 (1978). Will the debut of Blackout be a draw? Most likely no, but the Nova character on the other hand………buy Nova. Yes, buy Nova.

X-Men (2013) 3rd Series #7 brings back an old foe. Lady Deathstrike from Daredevil #197 (1983). That’s a nice book to have. Not a be all end all, but an okay book.

If you have children then you know about Ben 10. You know that Ben 10 is on your television set when you are getting the kids ready for school. Yes I get the explanation every morning on which alien Ben has turned into and what he can do. Fun times! IDW wants my boy to read comics too, which is a great thing. Check out Ben 10 (2013 IDW) #1 this week for your kids. Get them reading! DC Comics were the first to jump into the Ben 10 craze and now IDW is doing the same. Good times!

A few weeks back InvestComics asked that you’d get a beat on the Afterlife with Archie #1 comic. Boy did we hit that one! This week the initial offering of Afterlife With Archie (2013) #2 will be a bit different. It seems as though the zombiefied Archie interest has died down a tad quickly, but do not let this deter you from getting the second issue. There is still might be “life” in this zombie Archie.

If there is THE number one comic to get this week, it has to be Voice in the Dark (2013 Image) #1. Check out why our girl Zoey hasn’t killed anyone in about 72 days. She’s a radio DJ too. Not much to go on right? Well it’s an Image Comic, they release great stories AND it’s sold out already.

Cataclysm Ultimates (2013) #1 $20 variant is sold out. Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi Force War (2013) #1 will be one to check out and one more for the kids Scooby-Doo Team Up (2013 DC) #1!

Don’t forget, help us get to 3000 and you could win!!

Top 100 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE JULY 2013

Top 100 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE JULY 2013

Bi-weekly column and list compiled by comics historian Terry Hoknes of www.HoknesComics.com – hoknes@hotmail.com

HotComics2013LateJulyLogo

This list is updated every 2 weeks.  This list is compiled from my non-stop research of the current market.   I believe these were the most demand and growing in value books this month.     I did not focus on variants specifically as I can’t even keep track of them all.    If you think I have missed any hot titles/issues of the last 5 years please let me know.  Sales were at a very weak point during late May and all of June but July sales have already started to pick up on many titles.    Here are my picks of what I believe are the hottest comics at this very moment from all sold releases of the last few years online based on back issue sales ABOVE cover price.

#1 THE LAST OF US (DARK HORSE) – 4 issue mini-series all issues instant sellouts and tie-in to video game.  All issues are sold out and Diamond has sold out of #4 a month before its release.  Currently all 3 1st print issues are selling for on average $23.00 EACH !  #3 hit a high of $41.00 the week of release.  Print runs of issues #1-3 are very low.   Print run of #4 jumped way up and is a common book.  Complete set of 4 issues hit high of $160.00 in early July.    I sold a few sets at $100.00.  Only #1 has had a reprint so far and that 2nd printing might be so rare that it did not chart which means likely a print run of less than 3,000 copies.   Reprints were scheduled by Dark Horse for #1-3 and then cancelled but now rescheduled to come out mid August.

Last of Us American Dreams, 1, $3.99, Dark Horse, 6,012

Last of Us American Dreams, 2, $3.99, Dark Horse, 4,991
Last of Us American Dreams, 3, $3.99, Dark Horse, 5,014
#2 WATSON AND HOLMES (2013) Small print run of 3,800 copies between 2 regular covers sold out instantly and brought sales of up to $50.00 each in first week and then cooled off.
#3 CLONE (IMAGE 2012) On July 15th 2013 it was announced that the new TV series was official and that drove up prices on #1 even though it has a larger print run over 20,000.   Diamond still had copies in warehouse up to this news announcement and then sold its last 1,000 copies within days.   #1 currently at $10.00
#4 TODD THE UGLIEST KID ON EARTH (Image) #1 hit high of $20 immediately in January week of release and then settled down.    Smaller print run.  Mini-series #1-4 is sold out and will become ongoing soon from Image with #5 coming out in a month.  News of a new tv/movie reported on July 13th made the #1 a super hot comic instantly with sales as high as $40.00 each and sets hitting record highs.       #1 and #2 have a 2nd print which are both rarer typically in print run than the originals.
197, Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth, 1, $2.99, Image, 7,879
240, Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth, 2, $2.99, Image, 6,177
224, Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth, 3, $2.99, Image, 7,140
230, Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth, 4, $2.99, Image, 7,113
#5 INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US (DC) – the hottest DC title of 2013 with small print runs and 3rd prints selling out.  Peaked in May at $85.00 for set of #1-4      Many sellers with reprint sets that also sell well.   #1 2nd printing hit $12.00   #1 $40 #2 $25 #3 $8 #4 $5 #5-6 $4.   I predicted this could be a hit when I saw the initial print run numbers so low and yet featuring major characters Batman,  Joker, Superman, Wonder Woman etc.
 96, Injustice Gods Among Us, 1, $3.99, DC, 20,733
120, Injustice Gods Among Us, 2, $3.99, DC, 17,068
118, Injustice Gods Among Us, 3, $3.99, DC, 18,068

89, Injustice Gods Among Us, 5, $3.99, DC, 25,215
83, Injustice Gods Among Us, 6, $3.99, DC, 26,011.
#6 PETER PANZERFAUST (Image) #1-9 prices peaked in March.  #8 and #9 really hot but less demand for #4-6.  One season of the TV series seems guaranteed.   #1 hit high of $300 now around $200.00   Current prices #2 $60 / #3 $20 / #4-7 $10 each / #8 $20 / #9 $20.  Print runs for #6 7 8 were so low they did not even chart during the month.  Note the print run increaes for #10 and then #11.

#7 THE WALKING DEAD (Image) #108 1st app Ezekiel and #110 origin and battle of Ezekiel with Michonne.  All back issues #1-110 are sold out and bring above cover prices.  #92 and #93 extremely hot at  $30.00 each.   Retailers upped their orders yet again starting with #109 onwards after the sellout of #108.  This is the highest print runs have ever been (not counting #100).

#8 EAST OF WEST (Image) #1 Hot as a pre-seller and has stabilized at $7.00.   4th printing already and sets of #1-4 sell really well.  This is a rare modern example of a comic with a huge print run that still sells out due to popularity and goes to reprints on every issue.  It’s the “2013″ version of Saga in terms of popularity.  All issues have gone to 2nd prints.

#16 UBER #0-1-2-3   Sold out printings instantly.  Originaly I felt this title was being speculated on too heavily but many sales above cover have proven the demand for this series.   I personally believe this is the single best looking comic of 2013 with glossy paper and amazing colors and artwork.  Some amazing variant covers make it a big job to collect every cover version of each issue.   The first issue was #0 and not #1.  #0 is the rare ones to find.  #0 has a 2nd printing called “enhanced edition”.   Print runs on each individual cover are very low.  There are 4 regular covers of each issue so when you take the worldwide print runs you have to divide it by 4 to get the real print run of each cover.  This makes it more obvious how rare each individual cover is.  In fact there are only about 2,700 copies of each cover of the first issue #0.   Diamond monthly rankings for each issue and the combined print run of all the covers

#17 THE SIXTH GUN (Oni) – All 31 issues sold out – many not even on ebay and low print runs.  Sold a #1 for $250 in Mid April.  #1 now at $90.00.   Prices have dropped by about 70% since their peak from April 2013 when the news of the potential TV show was at its highest hype.   Still some of the rarest comics to collect will keep prices and sales up on this title.  The image speculating boom peaked by April 2013 and orders were raised drastically on issues #30-32 which were the highest since issue #2 three years earlier.

Top 100 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE JUNE 2013

Top 100 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE JUNE 2013 – list by Terry Hoknes of HoknesComics.com

H

This list is updated every 2 weeks.  This list is compiled from my non-stop research of the current market.   I believe these were the most demand and growing in value books this month.     I did not focus on variants specifically as I can’t even keep track of them all.    If you think I have missed any titles please let me know.  Online sales are really slow right now and hopefully this is the worst point as the school season is over and nice weather has arrived.  Summer is here and there is really no major changes in the industry for hot titles.   What we see is mostly a continuation of interest in the same books but mostly at a reduced price yet again.   I expect this will stay true all summer but the big question is will prices and interest pick up again for these books in the fall.   Some fear the speculation boom of 2012/2013 has peaked and is now over.  It is possible however there will always be certain books that go up in value in any time period simply based on supply and demand.

The top two hottest comic titles on this list are both based on video games!

#2 INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US (DC) – the only hot DC title small print runs and 3rd prints selling out.  Peaked in May at $85.00 for set of #1-4      Many sellers with reprint sets that also sell well.   #1 2nd printing hit $12.00   #1 $40 #2 $25 #3 $8 #4 $5 #5 $4

#3 PETER PANZERFAUST (Image) #1-9 prices peaked in March.  #8 and #9 really hot but less demand for #4-6.  One season of the TV series seems guaranteed.   #1 hit high of $300 now around $200.00   Current prices #2 $60 / #3 $20 / #4-7 $10 each / #8 $20 / #9 $20

#4 THE WALKING DEAD (Image) #108 1st app Ezekiel and #110 origin and battle of Ezekiel with Michonne.  All back issues #1-110 are sold out and bring above cover prices.  #92 and #93 extremely hot at  $30.00 each.   Retailers upped their orders yet again starting with #109 onwards after the sellout of #108.  This is the highest print runs have ever been (not counting #100).

#5 NOWHERE MEN (Image) #1-3 prices had peaked at $40,25,15 in March.    Set of #1-5 now sells for $60.00   #1 $30 / #2 $20 / #3 $10 / #4 $3 / #5 $3

#6 THE SIXTH GUN (Oni) – all 29 issues sold out – many not even on ebay and low print runs.  sold a #1 for $250 in Mid April.  #1 now at $90.00

#7 EAST OF WEST (Image) #1 Hot as a pre-seller and has stabilized at $7.00.   4th printing already and sets of #1-2 sell well.

#8 POLARITY #1-2   Small print run instantly to a 2nd printing.  #1 sells for $10

#9 SIX GUN GORILLA (BOOM) New on the list.  New #1 issue of mini-series based on golden age character quickly sold out and selling at $10.00 within a week of release.

#10 SAGA #1-12    #1 still super hot at about $80 down from peak of $100 – all issues in demand even with high print runs.  #12 was hot for a moment when banned by Apple.

#11 BATMAN #1 5 7 9 – sold out issues averaging $20.00 each and #1 sells for $50.00.  Complete sets of #1-10 bring $150.00.  Batman is the #1 selling regular monthly comic book these days and it is the most valuable “complete set” of all current titles.

#12 HAWKEYE #1-10   The only hot back issue Marvel title with all issues in multiple printings.  #1 now settled at about $25.00.   Almost every issue has been reprinted.  New issues still sell out.

#13 DETECTIVE COMICS #1 (DC 2011) 1st print sold out title re-start $25.00

#14 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Marvel 2008) Entire run is super hot due to interest in upcoming movie.  #1 hit high of $75 a month ago and now settled closer to $25 however all non-key issues bring anywhere from $5 to $15 each.

#15 GAMBIT (Marvel 2012) New ongoing series popular #1 $8 #2 $5 but #3 sold out everywhere and current asking price from only online copy is $50.00 !!

#16 ADVENTURE TIME – animated cartoon series – numerous printings now.   #1 is truly rare – no sellers on ebay even have a copy for sale.   $50 to $100 per copy of #1 first print.  #2 currently in the $20-30 range.  #3 $10.  #1-6 have been reprinted with connecting cover image.   #1-6 and #9-10 sold out from diamond.

#17 RACHEL RISING (Abstract) #1-16     TV announcement this week helped drive demand up as Diamond sold out of even the current issue not yet out this week.  #1 hitting $200.00 peak around May 1st.   Many issues still available direct from publisher website at cover.   #1 settled down now to about $70.00.    Sellers hyping rarity of 2nd and 3rd printings and getting high amounts as well.

#18 BATGIRL #13 – death of family storyline – these sold out and huge price increases in some areas up to $30

#19 BATMAN #13 / death of family storyline – these sold out and huge price increases in some areas up to $40

#20 THIEF OF THIEVES #1-12    Early issues still super hot – value peaked in January but still selling well

#21 REVIVAL (Image) #1-10   Early issues still hot but definitely cooled in value from Jan/Feb peak of #1 $45.00

#22 THINK TANK (Image) #1-5.  #1 sold out immediately and no one seems to have a copy.  2nd printings are more common.  #1 1st in the $15-20 range.   News of a new movie broke this week which might push prices up.

#23 NIGHTWING #4 (DC) 2012 – hot key issue from this Robin/Batman series.  $25.00 for this key issue.

#24 HOAX HUNTERS (Image) this title was cover price material until a TV show proposal shot prices way up on all issues.  #0 and #1 are extremely hot and hit $30 each.

#25 UBER #0-1-2    Sold out both printings instantly.  Future is unpredictable – more speculators than readers bought this.  Some amazing variant covers make it a big job to collect every cover version of each issue.   Almost all copies and printings are $8 or higher.    #0 has a 2nd printing called “enhanced edition”.

#26 MIND MGMT (Dark Horse) #1-10   #1 is really the only valuable issue at $40 but easy to sell sets at $80.  Very low print run.
