Detective Comics #951 begins a new storyline from writer James TynionIV, ‘League of Shawows’. Art by Christian Duce.
New JLA series begins; Justice League Of America #1, written by Steve Orlando and art by Ivan Reis.
Writer Hope Larson continues the ‘Son of Penguin’ storyline in Batgirl #8. The second appearance of Penguins son; Ethan Cobblepot.
Astro City hits its 100th anniversary issue; Astro City #41. This issue will have a couple of character introductions. Covers by Alex Ross, written by Kurt Busiek and art from Brent Eric Anderson.

It’s hard to believe the Thunderbolts will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in Thunderbolts #10 this Wednesday. Way back in Incredible Hulk #449 (1997), we got our first look at the then Thunderbolts team. The team has changed a number of times over the years, but that 1997 book was their first appearance. The 20 year old comic is still relatively affordable in some places on Ebay. Make sure you click our RED link to see the pricing and availability.
The Spider-Man Deadpool #14 cover shows Deadpool and Spidey at a comic convention. There are a few Deadpool cosplayers vying for position for an opportunity photo with Wade and there are many Deadpool cosplayers scattered throughout. It’s fun/silly comic cover scenes like this that wind up getting speculators in a frenzy over a first appearance somewhere. Maybe this cover features the first appearance of Rabbitpool? Bunnypool? Afropool?

For some reason, when the Elektra character debuts a new series, it always starts off red hot, but then tails off. We have faith this will not be the case for the new series beginning on Wednesday. Look for quick initial interest for Elektra #1, written by Matt Owens and art from Juan Cabal. If you like it, be sure to support the comic and buy the next issue(s).

Indie Hot Picks;
IDW Publishing delivers a few comics on this week’s Hot Picks list.
Revolutionaries #2 features the all new Storm Shadow.
If you’re an animal lover, there’s a comic for you this week. Check out IDW’s Animal Noir #1. Writer/artist Izar Lunacek tells the tale of animals that talk, wear clothes, smoke and investigate a prey fantasy film. We think this may not be a comic for the kiddies.
TMNT Universe #7 reveals the new Metalhead.
IDW also offers up Cosmic Scoundrels #1, Andy Suriano and Matt Chapman bring this web series to life. Two annuals; Judge Dredd Annual #1 and My Little Pony Annual #1.

Every new Black Mask comic release sells out (mostly). They offer up Quantum Teens Are Go #1. Written by Magdalene Visaggio and art by Eryk Donovan.

Image one shot; Belfry #1 will probably sell out. Writer/artist Gabriel Hardman delivers a horror story that may have fans asking for more. It starts here.
Speaking of sold out comics, Old Guard #1 will probably join Belfry #1 as the duo will show strong sales out of the gate. Old Guard #1, a story of old soldiers that won’t die. Written by the awesome Greg Rucka and art from Leandro Fernandez.
A sold out comic from Press Gang in 2016 makes its way to Image comics. The Anime style Sun Bakery #1 from writer/artist Corey Lewis.

What If #35 (1982) – A few months after knocking off Elektra, Marvel immediately went to the well and made this comic. They already knew they struck a cord with comic fans and were cashing in. See they’ve been doing this for years! Frank Miller writes and pencils this alternate universe story. Oh and legend Steve Ditko pencils the first appearance of the Cat People in another story. No really, we’re not making that up.

Daredevil #197 (1983) – Yuriko (later becomes Lady Deathstryke) makes her first appearance. Bullseye appearance.

Daredevil #200 (1983) – A classic John Byrne/Terry Austin cover.

Comic Broker Report – March 2013

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( March 2013 )

By Topher Seal

Most of us who collect comics also collect other things and while I believe that none of you want to know how I acquired a hang nail from Red Sox Slugger David Ortiz, I can assure you that there is plenty of comic related material worth investing in. But collecting in multiple markets creates its own set of problems.  Years ago I streamlined my collection and stopped purchasing action figures, posters and other materials simply because storage was becoming an issue.  Once you start building a collection it can quickly spiral out of control.  Example:  I had to find a creative use for long/short boxes so instead of telling my wife that a storage unit was in our future I removed all the bed frames, sold the metal for scrap and used one layer of boxes per bed to replace the frames.  With a little effort I was able to create tunnels for cats under each bed!  Everyone’s money has to go to many things each month so identify what you love and go for it just don’t try and collect everything,  you will go broke and probably lose a spouse or the love of your parents.

Star Wars Galaxy 2 ( bagged )

With the announcement that Chris Carter will create Season 10 of  The X-Files, back issues should see gains.  The ones I like: Issues 40,41  ( Both Photo Cover Variants ) of the Topps Series and this Star Wars comic.  Inside of this bagged issue there is an X-Files ashcan that just happens to be a rare early appearance of The X-Files in comics!

The Image 2010 Yearbook

sdcc2010_yearbook_coverIt’s pricey but if you are a fan of the Nowhere Men then you must find this.  There a lot of debate about the Nowhere men right now.  It’s one of Images hottest books and is demanding serious cash on the back issue market.  Some say Invincible 19 is the comic to own but others believe the first appearance is in this yearbook ( which is also a must have for Walking Dead fans )  I say buy both.

Iron Man 304,305

These comics had pretty significant print runs but if the armor at the end of the most recent Iron Man 3 film trailer is any indication then the Hulkbuster armor could be a big part of the climax.  You can find these comics cheap so why not buy real low and wait a few months?

Note: There is also a Marvel Legends Reprint of issue 305 that is a lot harder to find than the regular issue!

Thunderbolts 25 ( Series 1 )

Big Hero 6 is going to be a Disney Animated film and you were smart right?  You heard about the film and hit every LCS you could find for Sunfire & Big Hero 6 1-3 and Alpha Flight vol. 2 issue 17.   After that there weren’t  any appearances for some time.  But I’m guessing most people forgot about this issue from 1999.

Marvel Comics Presents 26 & Iron Man 230

If you are noticing a trend as it relates to collecting moderns then bravo!  These days the modern market is a bull and the cornerstone of collecting is first appearances especially as it relates to characters  jumping to the big screen.  Honestly would you ever care about Coldblood or Firepower if not for Marvel Films?  Now you must!

The Invincible Iron Man 10 ( secret bar code Variant )

I still believe that the second print of this issue will prove to be just as hot a back issue as this one.  Any appearance of the Rescue Armor in the upcoming Iron Man film should boost the value of this comic.  The cool thing about this comic is that the variant can only be determined by knowing what numbers to look for in the bar code!

th

Injustice Gods 1,1 ( Variant )

It’s not to often that I recommend a comic/video game tie-in issue but this series has generated some heat already.  Based on a new game from the Mortal Kombat creators it looks like a fighter that just can’t fail.  It helps that the art is tight and the Joker starts it all off with one of the most horrific acts in comic history.

The Image Comics Holiday Special

I have mentioned this little gem before but after the most recent episode of the Walking Dead every fan who collects the comics has to have this in their collection.  Morgan first appeared in issue 1 and later in this issue.  Now he has been featured in one of the show’s best episodes, Clear.  Buy this and buy it right now!

Detective Comics 647

Damian Wayne is dead!  Yea it’s sad because he’s the best Robin since the first Robin.  I do sense a resurrection in the futures especially since the little bugger was grown in an artificial womb but until then there will be speculation as to who the next Robin will be.  I want Cassandra Cain to take the role but it’s likely going to be Stephanie Brown.  Fans are clamoring for her DC 52 intro and this could be the way they do it.  This first appearance has been flying under the radar for some time and can be found for pennies.

This week: Hulk’s son is looking for some love, Heroes and villians kill each to wear a certain someone’s cape, the 90’s version of the X-Men return and Steve Rogers is still dead…..

battleforthecowl3.gifBattle for The Cowl #4  Well here it is fans, the winner gets the cowl. A new Batman is crowned. Sounds like a big deal right? The sad part here is that it would be a big deal if DC were to play their cards right. Did anyone hear about the death of Batman? Did anyone know that after DC sort of played the death card, Batman then went ‘missing’? Herein lays the problem why this particular comic will not be as big as it should be. Batman, Bruce will be back. Unlike the Captain, Steve won’t be back for quite some time. DC needs to have Batman either really be dead or bring him back in a few years. We all know that whoever wins the cowl will be fighting Bruce in a few months. Gotham needs new blood; let’s see if DC can give Gotham and its fans a good story here without another meek ending. According to the track record it does not look well.

firstskaarwhatifplanethulk.gifPlanet Skaar: Prologue  It cannot be said enough times here on InvestComics. Skaar is a force to be reckoned with. Not only as a Marvel character in the MU, but as a very sound investment. Greg Pak has continued to make Skaar a character for the ages. With this issue, this prologue, Skaar is introduced to the Marvel Universe. No more is he in his own realm. No more is he caught up in his emotional battle about his daddy (HULK) leaving him. Son meets Father and it’s going to get ugly quick. Yes Skaar is coming to the MU and you should be looking at the first appearance. What in Skaar’s name are you waiting for? Buy his first appearance and buy this book too. Welcome to the Marvel Universe Skaar!

theboysherogasm1.gif

invincible62.gifThe Boys: Herogasm #1  Garth Ennis brought the highly touted Boys back from the dead after  fans demanded  it. Well now here is the very first spin off of that series. Herogasm? Wow….that cover is um…..explosive!

Invincible #62  New villain Conquest continues his onslaught.

Here are some quick hits coming at you this week as well. X-men Forever Alpha brings names like Jim Lee and Chris Claremont  back on an X title. Red hot Wolverine Noir series continues. Thunderbolts brings in a new recruit to kill Wolverine, Mr. X. Dark Avengers shows no signs of slowing down at all and the Captain America comic reaches its milestone 50th issue. 25 issues after the death of Steve and still no signs of him coming back. Good job Marvel keeping people dead.
