GO GO GODZILLA! IDW’S GODZILLA: KINGDOM OF THE MONSTERS #1 SELLS OUT

GODZILLA® CONQUERS AGAIN
Godzilla®: Kingdom of Monsters #1 sells out in one day!

San Diego, CA (March 31, 2011) – IDW Publishing is pleased to announce that GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 has sold out just a day after making its debut at comic book retail stores throughout North America. Written by Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh, with artwork by Phil Hester, the rapid sell-out marks a fantastically successful return for the giant fire-breathing lizard to comics. To meet the continued demand and ensure fans everywhere have access to the comic,  GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 will be stomping its way back into stores in a ground-shaking second printing.

“We’re absolutely excited to see such a huge response to GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS,” said Ted Adams, IDW Chief Executive Officer. “We thought a sell-out for the first issue might be in the cards, but selling out in one day exceeded even our own lofty expectations. We definitely feel a special second printing is in order, and we will be producing one as quickly as we can as a huge thanks to all the many retailers and fans who have supported us so tremendously in bringing the King of Monsters back to comics.”

The second printing of GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 will feature the Alex Ross illustrated cover from the first printing with a new foil logo. The reprint issues are slated to arrive at comic book retail stores on May 11, 2011.

“It’s immensely gratifying to see this kind of support for our Godzilla comic,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “It was already our largest print-run ever, so to have it sell out on the first day of release is a testament to a great retailer base and to very appreciated support from fans. We promise more and more monsters in the subsequent issues as repayment for your kindness.”

In GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS, a full-scale apocalypse is brewing. The monsters are a force of nature whose attacks are as sudden and random as a lightning strike. There will be no clean-cut heroes with perfectly chiseled chins and capes billowing in the wind; only ordinary human beings struggling desperately to survive in a world gone mad.

GODZILLA®: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 (2nd Printing – $3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores on May 11. Diamond order code FEB11 8245.

Kicking off this August in Amazing Spider-Man #667 (with a special prelude in #666) the citizens of Manhattan—including some of Spidey’s closest allies and deadliest foes—begin exhibiting the web-slinger’s very own powers! ELVIS BIOGRAPHY COMIC BACK GETS AN ENCORE AS GRAPHIC NOVEL

His name is synonymous with rock and roll…to many he is simply “The King.” And even 34 years after his death, Elvis Presley’s life and music still enthrall millions. Now his biography and enduring legacy are celebrated in a graphic novel set to hit shelves on March 30th.

“The Elvis Presley Experience” is the latest Bluewater Productions encore release of vintage Rock ‘n’ Roll Comics issues. The original 6 issues were published by Revolutionary Comics in the early 1990s, but Bluewater’s offering combines all the issues into one 148-page trade publication.

According to original publisher and writer Jay Sanford, this take “is both scholarly and dramatic in its graphic recreation of the King’s remarkable life story.”

Sanford added that the Elvis series was among the best selling contemporary bio-graphic comics of the ‘90s and that the individual issues have been out of print for over a decade.

“The Elvis Presley Experience” features art by some well known names in the comic and genre industry including a future Marvel and DC star Aaron Sowd (Wolverine, Hawkman, Nightwing), and a story co-scripted by Babylon 5 TV vet Patrick McCray. Artist Azim (Logan’s Run: Last Day) provides fresh cover art of

“Any series concerning rock and roll can’t be complete without Elvis,” remarked Bluewater president Darren Davis. “And this issue covers all the ‘Elvis:’ the naïve Mississippi-born up-and-comer, the dangerous Elvis that made girls swoon in the fifties, the Hollywood Elvis of the ‘60s and Elvis as the Vegas staple in the ‘70s.”

This is the fifth re-release of the defunct Revolutionary Comics properties by Bluewater. The others include graphic novel trade publications featuring The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Joan Jett and the Runaways and “Hard Rock Heroes.”

The original series published by Revolutionary Comics ran from 1989-1994. At its height in the early 1990s, sources report that the company was the largest independent comic publisher in the industry. During its run, the company won several high profile First Amendment cases securing the right to publish the unauthorized biographies as “illustrated articles.”
The graphic novel issue retails for $17.99. It will be available through local comic book stores and several online venues including Amazon.com and the Barnes and Noble stores.
High-resolution images, PDF review copies and interview opportunities are available upon request.

Based firmly in Twentieth Century Fox’s PLANET OF THE APES franchise, this series written by award-winning sci-fi novelist Daryl Gregory (Dracula: The Company of Monsters, Pandemonium) and drawn by sensational artist Carlos Magno (Green Lantern Corps) transports you to a tumultuous time where man and ape stand at the uneasy brink of war! This April, don’t be the last to get your hands on these damn dirty apes! The PLANET OF THE APES comic series is produced under license by Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.

“In the new series, we’re taking our cues from the classic Apes movies but we’re shaking it up with some major surprises of our own,” said BOOM! NEW BABY PRODUCTIONS reactivates H.G. Wells’ OTHER Time Machine

H.G. WELLS’ LESSER-KNOWN TIME TRAVEL STORY TO BE REVIVED AS GRAPHIC NOVEL
New Baby Productions Adapting Sci-Fi Master’s Obscure “The Chronic Argonauts” Over 120 Years after First Published

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, Michigan, March 23, 2011 – Publisher New Baby Productions announces that a graphic novel adaptation of H.G. Wells’ short story, “The Chronic Argonauts,” is currently in production.  Originally written by a 22-year old Wells, and published by the Royal College of Science in 1888, the story is considered to be the first well-developed use of a “time machine” in science fiction.  It predates Wells’ more famous time traveling novel, The Time Machine, by seven years.

“The Chronic Argonauts” begins with the arrival of the mysterious Dr. Moses Nebogipfel to a small Welsh town.  The apprehensions of the simple rural folk eventually cause them to storm the inventor’s workshop in an effort to avenge perceived witchery.  Nebogipfel escapes with one other person, the sympathetic Reverend Elijah Ulysses Cook, in what is later revealed to be a time machine.  After having been missing for three weeks, Reverend Cook returns, aged many years older.  In recounting his experience, he states that he traveled with Dr. Nebogipfel to the years 4003 and 17901, but does not give any details beyond that. “The story ends there.  I think that Wells intended to tell those tales at a later time, but abandoned Cook and Nebogipfel to write The Time Machine,” stated New Baby Publisher, Eric Mullarky, “Over 120 years later, we are finally filling in the gaps and telling the whole story of Nebogipfel and Cook.”

This new adaptation is scripted by writer Jason Quinn.  Quinn has written for many UK comic books, including Barbie, Spectacular Spider-Man Adventures, Ben 10 Alien Adventures, and Action Man. He recently wrote the script for the European Ben 10: Live show, and has just published a Victorian murder mystery, The Palace of Wonder. Robin Cruz, Castaway, a graphic novel that he scripted, is due to be published by Campfire Publishing later this year.

Russ Leach and Tyler Smith, relative newcomers to the comic book industry, are providing the art for The Chronic Argonauts.  Lettering is being done by Charles Pritchett, an industry veteran.  He has lettered many books for Image Comics and IDW Publishing, including Dynamo5, Noble Causes, Eternal Descent, and Husk: The Hollow Planet, and is the co-creator of the upcoming IDW book, The Pound.

Wells’ works, including The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and aforementioned Time Machine, have been adapted many times over for movies, television, derivative novels, comics, and other mediums. However, “The Chronic Argonauts” is relatively unknown to most.  New Baby is hoping to change that.  Quinn explains; “This is not just another time travel story, it is the granddaddy of all time travel stories. We have recreated the future, from the perspective of two Victorian adventurers, in a way that I hope is reminiscent of the old pulp magazines and penny dreadfuls, while offering something new and refreshing for a modern audience.”  Added Leach; “It manages to be funny, exciting, and thought-provoking without losing that core comic strip tale appeal.”

The Chronic Argonauts is scheduled for a late 2011 release.  Project updates will be posted on the project web site, http://www.ChronicArgonauts.com.

New Baby Productions is an independent comic book publisher formed in 2008 by Eric Mullarky with the intent to self-publish his Elemental Fources mini-series. The follow-up, Elemental Fources: Brothers in Arms, was released in 2010.

Vote Jeff Balke – Eagle Awards!

“INTRODUCED in 1976, the Eagles are the comics industry’s longest established awards. Acknowledged as the pre-eminent international prizes, they have been featured on the covers of leading US and UK titles across the last 30 years. Unique in that they reflect the people’s choice, the Eagle Awards comprise of two distinct stages.” – Eagle Award website

The Eagle Awards have been around for some time.  And with them being around for a while, they know a thing or two about the comic industry and the creators in it.

Which brings me to this gentleman, Jeff Balke.  He’s a colorist for Zenescope Entertainment, Moonstone and others.  He’s worked on titles such as Grimm Fairy Tales, Tales from Wonderland, Charmed, Hack/Slash, Zombies vs Cheerleaders and many more.  Needless to say, he’s a busy guy..lol!

I’d like to ask you and we’d like to ask you to vote for Jeff Balke for the Favorite Colorist Eagle Award.  He’s not a big wig at Marvel or DC, but working his way up.  I’ve talked with Jeff on more than one occasion at shows or just chatting online.  He’s just a very down to earth guy.  If anyone deserved this award, its him.  He’s really worked hard.

So go to the Eagle Award site, go to question #8 (Favorite Colorist) and vote for Jeff Balke.  He really deserves this award.

Keep it up Jeff..and don’t ever stop!

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 3-23-11

InvestComics will be heading on over to the Orlando MegaCon once again this year. Last year was a fun show, but this year it will be spectacular. This year I will be joined by a true team player in Sebastian Piccione. And just in case you missed it, you can read all about Sebastian right here! A true TEAM player and a blast to work with, so if you are coming to the show, make sure to stop by Sebastian’s table. Artist Neil Jorge will be at the table as well! They’d love to meet you, so don’t be shy.

As many of you have noticed, InvestComics moved its entire site onto a new platform. For a few years now the InvestComics backend has been running on the Joomla platform. And it has been nothing but a pain in the neck since day one. Its primary functions were kind of useful, but in many ways when you looked for help with it, no one knew how to really operate it. There were many functions that had you scratching your head saying “huh”? So now InvestComics went to WordPress and I couldn’t be happier. A very special thanks to Christopher Moshier for the tedious task of moving things over. There is some more work to be done as far as the articles go. Many are missing images…..no biggie. I’ll get those fixed in time. If you need any website work done for an extremely affordable rate, send Christopher an email at christophermoshier@gmail.com. He’s great at his craft.

Now off to this week’s Hot Picks!

Marvel: Check out the new Captain America and Batroc one shot this week. One of Cap’s oldest adversaries goes toe to toe in what Marvel is calling “a rematch years in the making.” That’s a book for some good reading and action! If you want to seek out the first appearance of Batroc, look for Tales of Suspense #75 from 1966. This comic is only a $100 (per Comics Price Guide.com). It’s only a $100 because Batroc is one of those villains that will never become an elite villain. Unless Marvel is testing the waters with this one shot to see if it warrants bringing the third rate villain back for some more. Probably not going to happen. Nonetheless, a first appearance in a Cap comic from 1966 for only a 100 bucks is a deal any way you slice it.
Now we get to the ridiculousness of a new release from Marvel. Ridiculous in the name of FF #1. Do you need an explanation here? Okay here’s a few, first off, why the restart? Second, Spidey in FF? Third, those white suits? And finally the biggie…….8 covers?? Why? Eight different covers for the SAME pages inside. It’s one thing to release a number one issue with a regular cover, and then ONE variant, but 8? Marvel is running that thin line of the idiotic 90’s faze. Actually they have been doing this for quite some time now with the overabundance of variant covers. Well anyway, I will be checking out a copy of the new FF #1 (ONE cover, not reading it 8 times!). You should check it out too, and if you want to make a quick buck, buy the variant with the best ratio, slab it, get a very high grade, sell it back to a collector seeking these CGC’s on ebay.

DC comes in with the Hot Pick of the week. Supergirl #62 will be introducing a new villain for the ages. Yes for the ages. The DC solicit spills out names in comparison to the new villain like Joker, Darkseid, and Lex. This comic will probably sell out and the best part is the print run will not be a high one, which makes Supergirl #62 an even sweeter buy.

Independents to check out this week: Atlas Greeting from Earth, Creepy Comics #5, Jennifer Blood #2 exclusive DF cover edition, and Paparazzi #1.

See you next week, Invest wisely.

AN APP. A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR RIGHT WHERE YOU WANT HIM

IDW Brings DOCTOR WHO Comics to iPads, iPhones and PSPs
BBC Worldwide America and IDW Publishing bring DOCTOR WHO comics
to digital audiences worldwide

San Diego, CA (March 19, 2011) – IDW Publishing and BBC Worldwide America have today announced the global digital launch of IDW’s critically acclaimed DOCTOR WHO comic book series. Doctor Who fans worldwide can now follow the Doctor’s comic book adventures on their Apple iPads and iPhones, and Sony PSPs, along with IDW Publishing’s entire catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics, which is now out in digital form.

One of BBC Worldwide’s most successful franchises and the longest running science-fiction television series in the world, Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, the mysterious traveler who, with his human companions, journeys throughout all of time and space, facing a variety of foes and righting wrongs. IDW’s extensive catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics features both original stories and reprints of classic adventures. Currently, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO brings readers all-new adventures of the Eleventh Doctor that augment the on-screen excitement.

“We’re excited to bring out DOCTOR WHO comics on the PSP, as it’s a perfect comic for the game audience,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “For Apple devices, while all of the issues are also available in our IDW Comics app for our regular readers, there are many ravenous DOCTOR WHO fans that may not be familiar with the comics. So we created a stand-alone DOCTOR WHO Comics app that lets us feature the Doctor at the top level of the app store, offering users worldwide a completely focused experience.”

Ed Casey, Director of Licensing, BBC Worldwide America, who brokered the deal, said: “DOCTOR WHO fans are loyal and passionate and I’m sure they’ll love the fact that they can now get their favorite Time Lord in this 21st century format.”

Prior to this digital launch, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO comics were only available in print in North America. Available to international readers for the first time, DOCTOR WHO digital series presently includes over forty issues, with more added each month. The full catalog is available for iPads and iPhones as a custom branded app, and as individual issues on the PSP.

Added Webber, “Plus, it’s just awesomely fun to build an app that keeps the look and feel of something that could be a part of the TARDIS itself. It’s just possible that the app might start pulling in comics from the future that haven’t even been created yet!”

Doctor Who returns to BBC AMERICA screens in the U.S. on Saturday, April 23.

MAY’S FLASH #12 TO BE FINAL ISSUE

In the latest FLASHPOINT FRIDAY update on DC’s THE SOURCE BLOG, they revealed (as an answer to a fan question) that FLASH #12, due out MAY 11th, will be the series’ final issue.

What does this mean for the FLASH (any of them) in the DCU? Our bet is a new series (or multiple series) including some Wally, and hopefull still Barry.

“A few weeks back, we posted an open call for questions about FLASHPOINT with promises of answers to come. This week’s question comes from THE SOURCE reader and frequent commenter fhiz:

“ Johns wrote that Booster Gold was the only ongoing to tie   into  Flashpoint, so where does that leave his book, The Flash?”

Great question, fhiz. While the effects of FLASHPOINT will be felt throughout BOOSTER GOLD even after the series concludes, we can’t quite say the same for THE FLASH past issue #12… Why’s that?

Issue 12 will be the final issue of THE FLASH”

FLASHPOINT WILL BE AVAILABLE DIGITALLY

Over at THE SOURCE Blog, DC announced that the FLASHPOINT titles will be available digitally, a month after the books hit the stands.
Here’s the scoop…

“FLASHPOINT issues will be available at the DC Digital Comics Store and comiXology Apps (both available on iTunes) digitally four weeks after the print issue comes out. And they’ll be released on Fridays to coincide with THE SOURCE’s Flashpoint Friday.

That’s every issue of FLASHPOINT, including all the miniseries, as well, as the FLASHPOINT issues of BOOSTER GOLD. So, for example, the print edition of FLASHPOINT #1 comes out in print on May 11, and will be released digitally on June 10.”

IDW IS STRONG TO THE FINISH WITH POPEYE

POPEYE Now In Stores
A Compilation Of The Best of Bud Sagendorf’s Comic Book Genius

San Diego, CA (March 17, 2011) – IDW Publishing and famed comics historian Craig Yoe are pleased to announce the release of POPEYE: THE GREAT COMIC BOOK STORIES OF BUD SAGENDORF, a beautiful hardcover collection offering the very best of creator Bud Sagendorg’s hilarious tales.

In POPEYE: THE GREAT COMIC BOOK STORIES OF BUD SAGENDORF, the world’s most famous One-Eyed Sailor is joined by the Sea Hag, Bluto, Olive Oyl and many other fan-favorite characters for some of his most thrilling and funny adventures. These reproduced stories from the 1940s and ’50s are beautifully edited, designed, and packaged by creator Yoe, who provides a profusely illustrated biography of Sagendorf with many rare photos and art, as is per usual with YOE Books. To top it off, POPEYE boasts an introduction from animation historian and producer Jerry Beck, whose personal body of work includes Looney Tunes, The Ultimate Visual Guide, and the 50 Greatest Cartoons.

Working with Popeye creator E.C. Segar, Sagendorf spent years studying the craft and successfully captured the wacky and unique qualities of the One-Eyed Sailor when he finally took the lead on the strip in 1959 and went on to become Popeye’s longest running cartoonist. The greatest expression of Sagendorf’s Popeye was the long form, wild, and free wheeling comic book stories. This full color book lovingly collects the best of those great tales.

POPEYE: THE GREAT COMIC BOOK STORIES OF BUD SAGENDORF is the latest book from the IDW imprint, YOE Books, edited and designed by Yoe, winner of both an Eisner Award and the Society of Illustrator’s Gold Medal. Coming next from YOE Books is Archie’s Mad House, and The Barks Bear Book will shortly follow. Vice Magazine has deemed Yoe “The Indiana Jones of Comics Historians.”

“Dark Delights” and Horror Talk with Decapitated Dan

Decapitated Dan is the … well, the Mother Theresa of Indie Horror (his favorite sports team is the “Saints” afterall). I’m sure he’d prefer the moniker “Crypt Keeper” or “Grim Reaper” but truth be told, D2 doesn’t bury people, he resurrects them. How you ask? He unselfishly gives up his time spreading the Good Word about his favorite indie horror creators who often go unnoticed in overcrowded comic book bins and are bypassed at trade shows in lieu of autograph-hawking (albeit aging) Eerie/Creepy/Tales of the Crypt rock stars.

By day, Dan Royer is a Graphic Designer; by night his alter ego – “Decapitated Dan”, AKA Horror Comic Journalist – emerges to help raise the unknowns from the Dead, give them a voice in his columns, podcasts and websites, and do everything he can to bring their talents to the masses.

Decapitated Dan’s most recent venture – an indie horror road show/online shopping mall aplty named “Dark Delights” – is designed to help paycheck-to-paycheck indie creators gain exposure at comic cons. Recently, he took some time out of his busy schedule to fill me in, and so I “pay it forward” by sharing the good news with all of you.

IC311111

1) You’ve got many balls up in the air — by day you are a design firm and by night you become “Decapitated Dan”. Tell our readers how this alter-ego-persona came into being.

(DD:)  Oh man, the answer is way to long, so here is an easy way to sum it up.

IC311112Saw – emailed editor – helped launch FTT website – started doing reviews under the FTT name – contacted other comic sites about sharing reviews (comicmonsters.com, comicrelated.com, comicattack.net, horrornews.net, drivethrucomics.com) – started to do email interviews – began comicmonsters.com podcast – got tired of typing articles – started Discussions with Decapitated Dan podcast – and here we are today.

Simply I wanted to do what I could to promote all things horror comics. So I have teamed up with numerous websites to publish my reviews, host my podcasts and well … share everything that needs to be shared. It’s been fun so far; I mean you learn as you go. If you told me three years ago what I would be doing now, I wouldn’t have believed you. Yet here we are.

2) “From the Tomb”is a nifty indie horror magazine. How did you become involved with the publication?

(DD:)  Actually I have done very little work on From the Tomb. I just do some of the behind-the-scenes stuff for Peter Normanton. It’s his entire baby. FtB Magazine is, and yes, I will just use Peter’s words here:

“… the amateur comics magazine celebrating the last seventy years of comic book terror, crime and science fiction from across the globe. Contents include reprints of pre-code horror comics, new unpublished horror comic stories, interviews with past comic book masters of terror and the very new along with articles covering virtually every horror comics publisher, title and artist stretching back over seven decades with full colour cover galleries. If you enjoy your comic book terror you are going to want to read this magazine! “

As of right now From the Tomb is on hold again. Like I said I don’t do anything other than ask Peter what’s going on. We go back and forth with emails but that is the extent of it. Like all my other promotional work, it’s really just me promoting the magazine.

3) You co-host a nifty little podcast with Rob Caprilozzi of ComicMonsters.com. How did you two connect on the show? What’s the format and what have been some of your favorite shows to date?

(DD:)  Well the ComicMonsters podcast is only one of the three podcasts that I host. I also host my main show, Discussions with Decapitated Dan and Tales from the Water Cooler. The ComicMonsters podcast started when Rob and I were looking for ways to promote the site. I wanted to start podcasting and we dove in together. The idea behind the CM show is: Bi-Weekly and we talk horror comic topics. By topics I mean we choose a genre of horror comics and talk about as many books that fall under that as we can think of. Some of my favorites so far? Well that’s hard to pinpoint, but I guess I’d have to say the Zombie episodes and the Mummy Episode.

IC311113My other podcasts are Discussions with Decapitated Dan and Tales from the Water Cooler. The Discussions show is me talking to horror comic creators. Last but not least is Tales from the Water Cooler where I am joined by two other guys and we review our picks of the week.

You can find all the podcasts on iTunes – just search for the show name in the store, and they are all free and can be subscribed to.

4) OK, let’s get down to Dark Delights. Enlighten us on this rather unique idea.

(DD:)  The idea is really me finding another way to help promote my love of horror comics. I was talking to some creator friends and they were telling me how hard it is to come up with money to get into a bigger show. Tables cost $200 – $300, and then you have travel expenses. So I said well why IC311114don’t I run a table for you at a larger show, and showcase off other creators as well? You can all split table costs, and the price will go down. So the idea was born and I sent out feelers to see who would want in. The thing is that I am going to these shows anyways, so why not try to pimp some of my friends’ works? I love it and I think you should too.

The thing to remember is that Small Press and Indie creators don’t have the budget and don’t get paid like the big boys. So they can’t just hop on a plane and pay to hit up these shows. They can maybe do one or two in their area. Now I’m not rich by any means, but if I am going to go to a show anyways, why not try this out, to help them out?

5) Dark Delights is part indie horror comic con road show and part online horror shopping mall. What is your current lineup of indie horror creators and what cons will you be stalking in 2011?

(DD:)  2011 is when we test the waters, as I am going to do this at two shows. Detroit Fanfare is where the Dark Delights will start and that is Sept. 24 and 25. The second show I will be doing is Kokomo Con in Kokomo, IN. (Note: The website still needs to be updated for 2011.)

On board for the initial run I have, Asylum Press, Crypt Logic Comics, Dap Show, Doris Danger, From the Tomb Magazine, Harbor Moon, Heske Horror, King Tractor Press, Legion Studios, Moon Comics and Super Real Graphics, You can check it all out at and what I should have on hand at my Dark Delights website.

6) What is your ultimate goal with Dark Delights? Will you merge your web column, podcasts and perhaps even make available an iPhone app? In other words, make this a multi-media deal? Or perhaps even do a joint venture with other sites as Jay Katz has done with InvestComics?

(DD:)  Oh goodness your already 10 steps ahead of me. LOL. For now, it’s just staying as me doing something at shows I am already going to attend. I have too much on my plate to really take this further at the moment, but seriously you never know. Hell I put on Dan Con in only six months.

The problem is that I still need to cover the shows for press reasons;, you know tons of photos, meeting new creators, etc. So I need to see how it goes first since I don’t have a staff to help me out with this. I see it going very well in my head, but maybe it’s just a Detroit thing since I have an “in” there. I have to wonder what will C2E2 or Wizard World say if I sent this idea to them, because they might not give me the creator table rates.

7) We first hooked up when you were gracious enough to interview me in one of your Decapitated IC311115columns and later invited me on your podcast called “Deep Discussions with Decapitated Dan”. I thought you were one of the best interviewers I’d dealt with. Do you consider yourself more of a “web columnist/interviewer” or a “podcast host” kind-of-guy?

(DD:)  Haha, well this is a good one to answer. Okay real deal: I’m busy. I work 45 hours a week, I have the side design job and then I do all this comic stuff. Hell I think if anything I neglect the wife too much. The problem is that it seems there is not a single thing I won’t do to help promote a horror comic in anyway I can. Nowadays I do rely more on the podcasting side of things though. It does save more time, and I can cover more in one episode.

Is that fair to everyone I am helping? Maybe not to it’s fullest, but people need to know that this is something you do for the love of it, because there is no money to be made. That was a bad answer, huh? So when you ask for a title, I make it as simple as I can: Horror Comic Journalist.

8) Is Decapitated Dan a closet indie horror creator or are you just a connoiseur of dark matter? Ever thought about publishing your own indie horror comic book?

(DD:)  LOL … I can’t talk about it right now. What I can say is that Decapitated Dan will be coming at you in numerous comics in the next few years.

9) As a certified horror junkie, you most have some favorites. What artists in the horror genre raise the cackles on the back of your neck?

(DD:)  Oh see now that’s not fair. There are WAY too many people in this business whose work I enjoy. I think the easiest way to do this is just share the two covers that made an impact on me, because the list would almost never end.

1. Gore Shriek #1 – When I saw this cover by Bruce Spaulding Fuller I fell in love. I really think this was the turning point into getting me into taking a good look at horror comics. Hell this cover has been my cell phone wallpaper for 3 or 4 years now. I can not get enough of it.

IC311116

2. Deadworld #5 – Now I know there are WAY too many GORE-Geous Deadworld covers, but this one started my love affair with the series. There is no better zombie series than Deadworld and Vince Locke Killed it on this cover. I could stare at it for hours. The runner up to this one is Deadworld 26 (also shown below – bottom right).

IC311117

10) Wrapping up, is there anything else we should be on the lookout for – either  from Dark Delights, Decapitated Dan or the indie horror field in general? And do you think the Saints have a shot at making it back to the Super Bowl in 2012 if the football lockout is settled? After all, the world does end that year …

(DD:)  Haha, a loaded question. So first of all WHO DAT!!!! Your damn right my Saints will be back in the Superbowl this year. If there is a lockout I will go try out! 😉 Be a long drive from Chicago, but worth it.

The future is a mystery, really. As my great friend and comic writer Rafael Nieves knows, I never run out of ideas. Trying to get them all into working out is another story, but I never run out of promotional ideas.

The main thing to announce is that I will be doing Dan Con again. Anyone in the Chicago area, please come out and support local creators and sellers. Dan Con, for those who don’t know, is my comic convention that takes place in Orland Park, IL. It’s a smaller, community-based show. I had 21 creators and 15 Vendors on hand for the first year and they are all coming back next year. You can expect it to always be before C2E2. You can find out more on Dan Con 2012 at http://danconcomic.blogspot.com/ and on Facebook. I update Facebook all the time!

As for promotions, you can catch me wandering around at C2E2, I will be hosting a horror comic writers panel this year. I will also be on hand at Chicago Comic Con and Flashback Weekend. Then you can find me and the Dark Delights at the Detroit and Kokomo cons.

Other than that you can find the podcasts on iTunes and you can find me at decapdan@gmail.com.

If you have a horror book I want to know about it! The review pile might be large, and it can take me a little bit to get to it, but I will get to it. Email me at decapdan@gmail.com and let’s set something up!

Thanks Dan, and keep up the good work. We need more guys like you to keep Horror dream (or nightmare) alive.

We’re off to the races this week. Well not really, but Superboy and kid Flash are! More on that in a bit. Last week InvestComics Comic Hot Picks mentioned that Martin Pierro of Comic Times was going to appear on InvestComics TV. Instead Letter extraordinaire Jaymes Reed appeared! So THIS Wednesday, guess who is appearing on InvestComics TV? That’s right Martin Pierro of Cosmic Times! Great company, great comics, and a great guy.

DC has a race going on this week. It’s Superboy vs. Kid Flash. It’s the first time they will ever race. And from the looks of the previews pages on InvestComics, right here, it looks like it’s going to be a blast. DC first had a famous race back in 1967 in Superman #199. This classic issue is the 2 fastest heroes in the DC Universe going head to head in the very first race ever, Superman vs. Flash. The famous issue and race will cost you about $600, a beauty of an issue to have within your collection.

Marvel’s hostile takeover of CrossGen Entertainment finally comes to light this week. No it wasn’t a hostile takeover, just sounded cool. Marvel bought the rights to all of CrossGen’s property. This week Marvel tackles their first CrossGen character, Sigil. All of the CrossGen characters first appeared in CrossGen Genesis. That nifty little comic is only $8, while Sigil’s first solo comic, which first arrived as a customer review copy as Sigil #1 goes for $5. With Marvel at the helm, and with these strong character backgrounds that CrossGen put together, IF Marvel maintains the strength of this line, Sky’s the limit here. Look for an expansion into cartoons and even movies. So for $8 you receive full ownership of the first appearance of every CrossGen character. Not a bad buy at all.

InvestComics Hot Picks – Thor Movie Picks

TS3511A new Broker’s Corner sets its sites on the Thor film, and what Thor books you should have in your collection.

So here comes another summer packed full of comic book films! The odds of them all ending up hits are slim. Despite the fact that none will measure up to the industry standard that is Batman: The Dark Knight, let’s hope The Green Lantern comes close.

But if Thor were to out due both Hal Jordan and Captain America I think enthusiasts would be surprised.  The film does seem to have a lot going for it.  The Destroyer looks amazing and the casting is incredible.

I don’t often recommend Thor books for they rarely experience heavy gains unless they are pre-Bronze Age.  The comics here are the ones I would want to own especially if the film hammers the heavy favorites this summer.

Thor502

Thor Vol. 1 502

“Last issues” from this time period are usually valued high. This one is not as rare as some of those but it is still scarce. Often only found in the cheap seats it too often suffers from storage without boarding. The result is usually a near mint book with the flaw being a moderate to large spinal crease in the center.

Thor: Vikings 1-5

All of these comics are cardstock covers by artist Glenn Fabry and written by Garth Ennis! The covers are gorgeous and NM sets are out there. It is an affordable tale featuring Zombie Vikings!!!

thor405

Thor vol. 1 405  ( Mignola story )

There sure aren’t very many Thor annuals I would suggest you rush out and purchase. Here is a nice treat though; Mike Mignola submits his talents in a short tale.

JIM97

Journey into Mystery 97  ( 1st appearance of Bor! )

There aren’t a lot of Bor Appearances out there never mind high grade copies of this classic. Who is Bor?  Besides this book, check out Thor Vol. 3 issue 12, Thor 99, & 600 for some other appearances within the current Marvel Universe!

JIM118

Journey into Mystery 118 ( 1st appearance The Destroyer )

This Thor villain will be in the motion picture and he looks sick but it will take a good showing at the box office for this issue to see a considerable value increase.

Thor 411 & 412 (First New Warriors)

Thor411412

Thor vol 2  80 & 85

These books are part of the Avengers Disassembled Storyline which remains key to current story arcs in the Marvel Universe Today. Note: Issue 85 is also the last issue in Thor Vol. 2.

Okay, back from a busy Comic Con in Miami. Wizard World’s first ever in Miami. It was a blast, Wizard did a great job. Looking forward to next year and having another sit down breakfast (over an hour) with Martin Pierro (of Cosmic Times) and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Oz, The Crow, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle). Yes that’s right, a sit down breakfast with Martin! Look for Martin on InvestComics TV very shortly, oh yes and that guy Ernie Hudson will be appearing on InvestComics TV as well in the near future. All kidding aside, Ernie was one of the most humble, down to earth actors I have ever met from Hollywood. It was a fun experience sitting down talking Ghostbusters 3, television, Stallone, Hollywood, and even Kenny Rogers with Ernie. Look forward to hanging with Martin at Orlando’s MegaCon to see who we get to hang with next!

Marvel goes with a one shot this week, Captain America and Falcon. Falcon is one of those characters you scratch your head saying “How come he’s not as popular as he should be?” Falcon is an awesome underrated hero, and should get his due someday. He’s been around since 1969 as his first appearance was in Captain America #117 from Gene Colon, Joe Sinnott, and Stan Lee. The cover has John Romita Sr. pencils on it! For a comic that cost $116, this is a steal! The Marvel Cosmic’s are unleashed once again with Annihilators #1. Love the Cosmo’s, love the fact as you have heard here at InvestComics countless times, Marvel has YET to truly touch the Cosmic Universe on the big screen, but when they do……don’t say you weren’t ever warned about those back issues! Check out Ronin #1, that may be an interesting read.
