House_of_Mystery_179_InvestComics Chamber_of_Darkness_Vol_1_7 The_Spectre_9_InvestComics

Bernie Wrightson’s first professional published work was in DC’s House of Mystery #179 (1969). He did a backup story with another comic legend (early work), writer Marv Wolfman. This comic also featured some early work from Sergio Aragones and Neal Adams (Cover Artist).

His first non horror related comic came immediately following his first work. Although not too far from the realm of horror, he penciled a Spectre story in The Spectre #9 (1969)

Bernie continued to do interior backup stories for DC and a few covers for some magazines/indies, but it wasn’t until late 1970 when Marvel Comics stepped in and let Bernie do his first comic cover; Chamber of Darkness #7. His second Marvel cover would turn out to be Creatures on the Loose #10 (1971). Why mention his second cover you may ask? He collaborated on the cover with some guy named Jack ‘King’ Kirby. It also happens to be the first appearance of King Kull.

Green Lantern #82 (1971) turned out to be the first major superhero work. He only did the inks on one page here though. Inks over Neal Adams.

Here’s an interesting thing. Bernie did a cover for House of Mystery #195 (1971) and the name of the story was “Bat Out of Hell”. Look at that cover……..2 months later he’s one of the writers in Batman #237 (1971), which also is the first appearance of the Reaper. Then a few months after that he collaborates with Neal Adams on the Batman #241 (1972) cover. It looks very similar to the House of Mystery cover Bernie did just a few months prior. Was that House of Mystery cover a Batman break-in for Bernie? Possible right? Well just a few months after the Neal Adams Batman collaboration cover came Bernie’s first solo Batman cover happened on Detective Comics #425 (1972).

Dialing back for a second here, House of Secrets #92 (1971) is a prize from the Bernie collection as far as first appearances are concerned. This comic features the first appearance of Swamp Thing. Wrightson is to Swamp Thing as McFarlane is to Spidey, Kirby is to Captain America, Frank Miller is to Daredevil….you get the idea right? Wrightson does the cover and interior here. Fantastic comic to own.

Already mentioned above were some of Wrightson’s first work with Marvel, but about a superhero for Marvel? He’s already done Batman for DC, what about Marvel? After some stints with Kull and Conan, he did his first sort of superhero character in Astonishing Tales #31 (1975). His cover art was a collaboration with Ed J. Harrington and it depicted Deathlok shooting in a blaze of glory. Okay so Deathlok doesn’t do it for you? How about Incredible Hulk #56 (1976)……from France. Yes that’s right. He did a Hulk solo cover that appeared only in France. Good luck getting that comic in NM condition….ever. So what about a SOLO Marvel cover in the States as a first for Bernie in regards to a major Marvel Superhero? Captain Marvel #43 (1976)? Nope, another collaboration. How about Incredible Hulk #197 (1976)? We have a winner! ….And who is that on the cover? Why yes that’s Man-Thing (coincidence? Um, no). What a beauty of a cover too.

Speaking of beauty. Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein (pictured above). Wow. Just wow. Marvel at the beauty of this artistry. Unbelievable, magnificent, poetry, classic….there simply are not enough words here.

Batman_241_InvestComics House_of_Mystery_195_InvestComics

Bernie’s first Superman came in Superman #272 (1974) as a pinup. Still counts as a first. He also contributed a pinup in a Superman pinup portfolio in 1984.

Here’s a question to ponder. Since the mention of Batman and Superman, what about Marvel’s flagship character? Spidey! Yes Bernie Wrightson penciled, inked and colored his first Spider-Man story back in 1986. Marvel had these really cool things called graphic novels back in the 80’s that featured original stories in oversized fashion and on super shiny paper. Oh it was so cool, good times, good times….. anyways, “Amazing Spider-Man in Hooky” was the name of Marvel’s graphic novel #22 (1986) that Bernie had complete creative control (except writing duties). This was Bernie’s first and only Spider-Man story he’s ever done. In Marvel graphic novel #29 (1987), Wrightson collaborated with legend Jim Starlin; The Incredible Hulk and the Thing. It wasn’t until the following year that Jim Starlin And Bernie Wrightson would collaborate to make one of the top 10 Batman stories of all time.

Batman: The Cult was and still is a bad as* Batman story. A four issue series that still brings it to this day. Still sort after and if you don’t own it, you should.

Rolling back here, here are two freebie’s for InvestComics fans. Back in 1983, Doctor Strange/Silver Dagger Special Edition #1, cover by Wrightson. Dreadstar #6, Get these comics in a 9.8 grade, get Bernie to sign them (Jim Starlin as well; Dreadstar #6), grade them and sell them before the Dr. Strange madness dies down a few years from now and the Dreadstar craze begins and dies as well. SKYBOUND

Skybound has signed an exclusive film deal with Universal. The should ignite some speculation concerning the current Skybound catalog.  Here are my pics:

Beyond Invincible and the Walking Dead there are other comics produced by the Skybound imprint that are pretty darn good!

Witch Doctor Preview #0

The medical horror comic series from Brandon Seifert first appears in this preview.  The subsequent mini is worth a look also.

1069837

Invincible #43

OK there are so many Invincible books to pick ( including many others from other Image titles like Noble Causes, Savage Dragon, Tech Jacket, MOTU etc.)   Issue 43 is one I have not mentioned before though.  Anissa appears on the cover to issue 44 and she has become an infamous Invincible antagonist.  But the cover to issue 44 appears at the conclusion to issue 43.

Birthright #1 ( NYCC )

This is my favorite title from Skybound and it is the hardest cover to find!

Clone

I thought this one was dead in the water especially since Orphan Black has a similar concept but according to the Skybound’s deal this is still in development.

Others to look at:  Thief of ThievesManifest Destiny, Ghosted, Brit, Science Dog

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Lexus SDCC (First Melinda May)

If you haven’t been watching Agents then you are still missing out.  I keep telling people this because the show has become must see TV for Marvel fans. Filled with obscure Marvel U references and gripping action, the show is both fun and part of the larger Marvel film world.  Though Coulson is a fan favorite and Daisy/Sky/Quake has made issue 2 and 5 of Secret Wars worth some cash it is Melinda May who is increasing become the show’s powerhouse character.

Izombie is a hit with viewers and as a result House of Mystery Annual 1, issue 1a and 1b have seen serious increases  in cost.  Unbeknownst to many Izombie was previewed here too!

STAR WARS SPECULATION

Here is yet another reason to suggest the SB paperback-first appearance of Lando who is getting his own comic!

Star Wars Tales 23 ( photo cover ) is the first appearance of Revan.  Kylo Ren’s costume sure looks similar to the EU character.

Star Wars: Clone Wars 3 ( First Captain Rex )

One of my favorite characters from Star Wars is Captain Rex and it was just announced that he will be returning on S2 or Rebels! THis is his first comic appearance and the cover is sick!

Galaxy Quest: Global Warning 1

One of the greatest cosmic comedy films ever is coming to TV via Paramount!  There are a limited number of comics available.  This one is a key.

COVER OF THE MONTH

Suicide Squad 67

Other than issues 1,6,23,49 there aren’t too many comics from this series worth collecting.  When DC decided to resurrect certain titles for final issues during the Blackest Night crossovers fans were treated to one of the better concepts the company has ever come up with.  This one just might be the best SS cover I have ever seen!

InvestComics Hot Picks – Top 5 New Comic Picks #8

From: InvestComics Hot Picks #369

Every Tuesday/Wednesday! Here are the Top 5 NEW comics to speculate/read from this Wednesday’s new comic book day.

From this past Sunday’s InvestComics Hot Picks #369

.

Batman #40 – The Endgame story line comes to a climatic conclusion. The last issue of this run is completely sold out. The regular cover and variants are no longer available at Diamond. The two variants are fantastic; the Andy Kubert and the Mask movie variant.Silk_3_InvestComics

Silk #3 – The Black Cat vs. Silk! The variant is sold out. Watch for books like this one to command some extra units once the Silk character hits it bigger. The Black Cat is already slated to appear in a Spidey movie eventually, maybe Silk too? Never know….

Princess Leia #3 – As explained on InvestComics quite often these past few months. Any new Star Wars comic holds the potential of explosion or possible long term investment. A first appearance may happen at any time and the speculation fever will hit. Maybe that first appearance will come to fruition. Maybe that first appearance will become a bigger story within the Marvel Universe. Maybe a cartoon appearance? Maybe none of this. Either way, you’re getting some good Star Wars stories to read!

Fantastic Four #645 – The last issue of Fantastic Four ever. That’s until the Mouse is not any anymore.

Mayday #1 – An odd offering from Black Mask Comics. A daring story line about Hollywood may have this comic fly under the radar.

Secret_Wars_1_InvestComics_Contest

Three issue finales should grab some attention of readers and collectors this Wednesday. Avengers #44 and New Avengers #33 both end to make way for the epic Secret Wars heading our way. Both of these comics are still available with variants as well. Nothing sold out as of yet. Batman #40 on the other hand is sold out across the board. Regular cover and variants are sold out at Diamond. It’s the Endgame storyline finale and it’s a biggie. The Andy Kubert variant is a beauty and the Mask movie variant is quite awesome itself. About that Mask variant; If the stars aline with the galaxy and the a moon sets in Jupiter under the Capricorn astrology sign, maybe if you happen to bump into actor Jim Carey and have him sign the book for you (as a graded witness or with a witness) you would own a very awesome comic. So please no emails or social media messages “How would I get Jim Carey to sign my comic?!” Please, we’re having fun here.

While the Convergence deal is going down (more on that in a little bit), DC is building on their big Justice League event called “Darkseid War” and it begins this week in Justice League #40. This story will be epic and awesome. For many years InvestComics has informed speculators to pick up the first appearance of Darkseid. InvestComics is still bullish (buy side) on this comic. Check out a more recent article on Darkseid on InvestComics from 2013 right HERE. Some very key issues that will probably bounce once DC gets around to their announcement that Darkseid will be the main bad dude in the Justice League movie. Maybe it’ll be Doomsday. Who knows really?!

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

All-Star_Squadron_Vol_1_25_InvestComics Fantastic_Four_645_InvestComics Silk_3_InvestComics

Here’s a quick speculative lesson here. Darkseid is the better buy, even if Doomsday appears in a movie and Darkseid doesn’t. Yes I said it. Here’s a few reasons why; Darkseid has withstood the test of time and has always been a bad as* as Doomsday has been reinvented and appears in an abundance of overprinted comics back 20 something years ago. Try getting some solid 9.8’s in the Darkseid article mentioned above. They are scarcer. They are simply harder to find in better shape. Most of those comics in that article are cheaper than the first appearance of Doomsday right now. Doomsday will be a passing faze folks. The books will spike, then drop once the JLA kick his butt and kill him. No more Doomsday in movies, now what? Prices drop (hey Ultron fans you paying attention here?) and no one cares about Doomsday anymore. So back to Darkseid we go. He’s the long term money maker here. Not Doomsday. Lets say Darkseid appears in the movie. Many of you are saying “wouldn’t the same happen to the Darkseid character if he appears?” The simple answer is no. DC will not kill Darkseid in a movie (you listening Thanos fans?). DC knows that character commands the respect of ever going back to that well (villain) if need be. You see how this works? They would kill Doomsday, but not Darkseid. Darkseid is a bad as*, he’s money. Doomsday will probably make some very nice cash for many speculators, but many will get stuck holding onto them too long. So Darkseid vs Doomsday…….put money for long term on Darkseid and short term on Doomsday.

Batman_40_InvestComics_Endgame Batman_40_InvestComics_Joker_Mask_Endgame Justice_League_40_InvestComics

Disney is still very angry at Fox for not complying with their needs/wants and will now be getting rid of another one of the Marvel Comics character(s). The X-Men have all but disappeared from the Marvel lure, Wolverine is still dead and now the Fantastic Four comic will be ending; Fantastic Four #645. Take note: don’t make the mouse angry. So how will this triple sized $5.99 issue end everything for Marvel’s first family? Only four variants at last count for one of Marvel’s most prolific runs in their history. That’s the same amount of variants for the New Avengers #33 comic this week. That’s an angry rodent.

Speaking of variants. Silk vs. Black Cat this week in Silk #3. The incentive variant cover is sold out. It’s a nice speculative pick up for when Silk breaks out.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

As InvestComics reiterates almost every week now. Buy the new Star Wars comics. No matter if you collect them or not. Princess Leia #3 will be hitting the new comic book shelf this week and you run the risk of missing a first appearance that will explode in the aftermarket due to either a character that will or MAY (speculative) appear in a new Star Wars film. Maybe one of them break out into a popular cartoon, maybe somehow work their way into the Marvel universe? Any of these speculative thoughts are a possibility, so why not read a good story(s) and stay on top of things?

Daredevil #15 will bring back an old villain. We look forward to who is showing up. By the way, anyone catching that Daredevil Netfix series? Good stuff!

DC’s very popular Injustice gets an annual; Injustice Gods Among Us Year Three Annual #1. Looking forward to a good read here.

An interesting comic from Image this Wednesday to definitely check out is Pisces #1. Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe (Rat Queens).

The second bullying issue from Northwest Press hits this week; Rise Comics Against Bullying #2. Read the write up right HERE that InvestComics gave regarding issue #1.

And here is a small list of number one comics to also check out this week; Fubar Mother Russia #1, Mayday #1, Alamo Value Plus #1, Mens Feelings #1.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Each week InvestComics has been breaking down some of the DC Comics Convergence comics. As said a few weeks ago, speculatively speaking here of course, but DC is running a marketing campaign to see what their next move will be for years to come. Do they make 2 separate universes in their convoluted confusing universe already set in place or are they just seeing which reintroduced characters or teams they will set forth with and give them more air time. Again, all speculative speaking here. If they are indeed doing their feeler marketing campaign, here are a few comics a speculator can look for…

Gotham_by_Gaslight_InvestComics Justice_League_107_InvestComics Red_Son_InvestComics

Convergence Infinity Inc. #1 features Infinity Inc. of course. Their first appearance came in All-Star Squadron #25 (1983). Infinity Inc. then had their own series which featured the very first artwork (for DC) by a very well known artist today. A special “Carpe Diem” shout out goes to the first person who knows who this is.

The Red Son #1 back in 2003 was a big hit. As of today, it’s still a fan favorite. Check out Convergence Action Comics #1 as it touches on the popular Red Son story from none other than Mark Millar.

Back in 1989 Gotham By Gaslight was a well received story told by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. DC brings back that story in Convergence Shazam #1.

The Qward Universe will make its way into the Convergence Justice Society of America #1 comic. The Qward Universe first appeared in Green Lantern #2 (1960).

Convergence Plastic Man Freedom Fighters #1 will bring the Freedom Fighters front and center. Check out their first appearance in Justice League of America #107 (1973)

The story from Convergence Worlds Finest #1 will be told by Scribbly Jibbet. Scribbly’s first appearance came in The Funnies #2 (1936). Also appearing in this comic is the group The Seven Soldiers of Victory. They first appeared in Leading Comics #1 (1941) and also Showcase #1 from 2000 (Silver Age).

Convergence #4 and Convergence Blue Beetle #1, Convergence Booster Gold #1, Convergence Crime Syndicate #1, Convergence Detective Comics #1 round out DC’s Convergence week.

InvestComics Hot Picks – Top 5 New Comic Picks #7

From: InvestComics Hot Picks #368

Every Tuesday/Wednesday! Here are the Top 5 NEW comics to speculate/read from this Wednesday’s new comic book day.

From this past Sunday’s InvestComics Hot Picks #368

Kamandi_1_InvestComicsClick on any of the RED links or the comic cover in this article to buy/bid on the comics directly from Ebay.

G.I. Joe Real America Hero #213 – The death of Snake Eyes story line has heated up. The second part is sold out across the board. Regular and variant covers are no longer available at Diamond distributors.

The Inhuman Special #1 – Marvel promises to have a character appear after a 75 year absence? Check out the comic to see who it is.

Star Wars #4 – As stated in this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks #368, Star Wars is ultra hot right now. Be sure to stay on top of all the Star Wars comics; a first appearance is looming that will explode once again in the aftermarket.

Convergence Hawkman #1 – Kamandi, The last Boy on Earth makes an appearance. Check out InvestComics Hot Picks #368 for more details on this book.

Convergence Justice League America #1 – Same goes here as the previous entry.

In the regular InvestComics weekly Hot Picks articles, we have said that DC Convergence might be a precursor into a bigger picture for them. A big marketing plan to see if certain characters are called upon by fans to make more stories (**ahem money**). Maybe picking up some of the first appearances because of the reappearances by characters is an easy get. The first appearance of Kamandi, a Bronze Age comic, A Jack Kirby creation for $90 as a graded 9.6 on Ebay? That’s awesome.

InvestComics Hot Picks 368:

New Release Comics on 4/22/15 (And back issues)

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

A new comic book week means a new week of Convergence titles from DC. Also a new week of speculating on some of them too, besides some good reads of course. Each week InvestComics touches on the Convergence titles to give a possible heads up on what DC MAY do in the future with possible new titles or characters reemerging in the DCU. This is pure speculating here. DC may never visit some of these characters again after they appear in this epic storyline, but it’s fun to take a look at some back issues to hunt down a first appearance. Like a Captain Carrot from a couple of weeks (and months) ago here on InvestComics.

Justice_League_of_America_v.1_Annual_2 Kamandi_1_InvestComics

Convergence Hawkman #1 will visit the land of Kamandi. Kamandi hasn’t really appeared in a whole lot of books considering he was introduced in 1972’s Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth #1. Jack “King” Kirby is the cover artist and artist/creator of the character. A wonderful Bronze Age comic to have in you collection regardless if DC ever follows up with this character.

The Detroit Justice League will appear in Convergence Justice League America #1. Check out Detroit’s baddest gang and their first appearance in Justice League of America Annual #2 (1984). This comic also happens to be the first appearance of Vibe.

Convergence Superboy and The Legion #1 will feature the group Atomic Knights. They first appeared in Strange Adventures #117 (1960).

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

And besides Convergence #3, here are the rest of the Convergence titles hitting the shelf this Wednesday; Convergence Adventures of Superman #1, Convergence Batman and The Outsiders #1, Convergence Flash #1, Convergence Green Lantern Corps #1, Convergence New Teen Titans #1, Convergence Swamp Thing #1 and Convergence Wonder Woman #1.

G.I. Joe Real America Hero #213 continues the “Death of Snake Eyes” storyline. Snake Eyes is one step closer to his comic book demise. Fans must be loving it because the comic is sold out across the board. Regular cover and variants.

With all of the Star Wars craze going on right now and with the Star Wars Marvel comic doing so well, it’s probably best to stay on top of this series and any other Star Wars related series from Marvel. The potential of any new introductions within the series will send the aftermarket into a frenzy. As proven with the heads up InvestComics gave everyone with Darth Vader #3 (since cooled off). So check out Star Wars #4 this week….

GI_Joe_213_InvestComics Star_Wars_4_InvestComics

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

The Inhuman Special #1 will be a cool book to check out. Marvel states there will be a character to appear that hasn’t for 75 years until now. That’s neat. We look forward to see who it is.

Everything Star Wars is hot, so what better time than to release a titled book like Empire Uprising #1 to confuse everyone! IDW publishing puts out this awesome Mark Waid written, Barry Kitson drawn comic this Wednesday. Incidentally, the same creative team first introduced Empire back in 2000 under the Image Comics label; Empire #1. Great stuff. A couple of more interesting titles from IDW to check out; Infinite Loop #1 and Drones #1. Also a cool comic from IDW for the little ones; Littlest Pet Shop Spring Cleaning #1. The Littlest Pet Shop #1 first came out in 2014.

Two titles from Image Comics this Wednesday to check out are Beyond Belief #1 and Kaptara #1.

Guardians of the Galaxy #26 will feature a variant Howard the Duck Nirvana cover.

I.C.E. Bayou Black Out #1 from 12 Gauge comics is a looker. I.C.E. First appeared as a free comic book day comic back in 2011.

Avengers Magazine #1 has names attached like John Buscema and Jack Kirby. It’s a must get for any comic book enthusiast. Avengers Operation Hydra #1 will also be for comic book enthusiast, but especially Avengers fans.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Convergence_2_InvestComics Zero_Hour_InvestComics

DC’s Convergence will slay the market with great storytelling. Great storytelling along with DC’s test market too. Yes a test market. Now granted they wanted to put together a killer plot that brought “everything” together, but don’t think for a second they aren’t paying attention to the noise (demand) on what older characters or groups are causing a buzz. A buzz on an older group or character could potentially mean more money in the bank for them down the road. This is where YOU have to pay attention. InvestComics can point out some potential (speculation) on some of the older players, but the speculator also needs to keep their ear to the ground here and pay attention. We cannot call them all and we will miss some, so please fanboy, check yourself before you write emails or post on our InvestComics Facebook/Twitter/Instagram accounts that we missed something. And lest we remind you here, this is all speculation on the point that DC is running a mini marketing campaign without anyone realizing it, except for InvestComics of course. The thought of bringing any of these older obscure characters/groups back front and center may never happen. Some of them were very popular at one point and just lost traction along the way, maybe just maybe this is the door that opens once again for them? Maybe not. Either way it’s fun to speculate and collect first appearances anyway.

The entire DC solicit campaign this week centers on two titles from the 90’s. Zero Hour from 1994 and Kingdom Come from 1996. Two epic series in their own right. Fantastic reads and pure fun. You can get the trades for these books, but the original comics are very affordable. Kingdom_Come_InvestComicsClick those red links to buy them now from Ebay.

Convergence Superman Man of Steel #1 will feature the group Gen13. Anyone remember them? They were hot for a little bit back in the day. So is this one of those marketing ploys DC is testing? You never know right? Just in case you’d like to jump on their first appearance it’s in the overprinted Deathmate: Black comic from 1993. Plenty of copies to be found, not a hard one to find by any means.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Lady Quark and Ambush Bug will both appear in Convergence Supergirl Matrix #1. Lady Quark first appeared in the unforgettable Crisis of Infinite Earths storyline. Crisis on Infinite Earths #4 (1985) to be exact. Another very easy get here. Ambush Bug first appearance came in DC Comics Presents #52 (1982). One of those weird comics you’ll find in some 25 cent pile someplace. If you don’t feel like searching for it, buy it right here in this article, but not that many copies on Ebay…..interesting. Love these comics because of the creators on them and because there probably aren’t a whole lot of these in great condition laying around.

The character Deathblow has never really emerged as a winner within the DC universe. Appearing in a ton of Wildstorm books, but never making an impact on the DC side. Granted he’s only had a few appearances since 2011, but still. He will be making an appearance in this week’s Convergence Aquaman #1. His first appearance came in Darker Image #1 (1993). One of the easiest comics on planet earth to get.

Archie_vs_Predator_1_InvestComics Convergence_Superboy_InvestComics Crisis_4_InvestComics

Convergence Superboy #1 features an awesome cover by Babs Tarr. InvestComics has spoken about her a few times. An up and comer to watch for.

And just as Convergence #1 had the new Batman (Bunny-Bats) on the variant, Convergence #2 will feature the new look Wonder Woman on its cover. This is sketch variant done by David Finch is sold out. So we can all safely guess where these sketch variant Convergence covers are going right?

Here are the rest of the Convergence titles to check out; Convergence Batman Shadow of the Bat #1, Convergence Suicide Squad #1, Convergence Catwoman #1, Convergence Justice League International #1, Convergence Green Arrow #1 and Convergence Green Lantern Parallax #1.

Archie Comics will make their presence known this week. Check out Betty and Veronica #275 for the first appearance of two new girl transfer students; Violette and Banni. Like as if Archie doesn’t have enough girl troubles in his life right? With all of Archie Comics’ big plans coming in the next few years (movies/television), you never know if they will reach to any new first appearances to make some noise with them. An few variants are available with issue 275 here. Check out that beautiful Adam Hughes variant. How about a sold out Ramona Fradon cover too?

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Also this week from Archie Comics is Archie vs Predator #1. Yes that’s right, no misprint here. The Eric Powell variant is all kinds of wrong, but all kinds of awesome though.

….And Archie Comics imprint Dark Circle releases Fox #1. This looks like a good read. A must get.

Marvel Comics’ Ms. Marvel #14 will have an introduction of a new male character. Not sure what the deal is with him, but his name is “Crush”. Maybe that’s his name, not quite sure yet. We’ll have to wait a few issues to watch this one unfold.

Betty_and_Veronica_275_InvestComics Ms_Marvel_14_InvestComics Runlovekill_1_InvestComics

Ember #0 from Boundless comics looks interesting (scarce on Ebay right now), as does Tithe #1 and Runlovekill #1 from Image.Runlovekill #1 has only one cover, no variants. If this comic takes off, this is a keeper for the time being. Ebay only showing 5 of these comics right now. Definitely worth a look here. Also check out Aquila #1 from Rebellion comics and Bloodshot Reborn #1 from Valiant.

DC comics will run the table this week. Convergence is here and boy is it a biggie for DC readers. It will bring back the old, the way things were back oh so long ago. This July will make the New 52 a whopping 4 years old. So what to do after ALL of those years of making a new universe and never looking back? Bring back the old universe for a little while! Of course this is all dripping with sarcasm but all in fun here.

DC’s Convergence will probably make some noise at the comic shop registers, but what about the speculators? First off and very important here, the readers are in for a huge treat. Bringing back everything and making it all one big fat hunk of DC meat is pretty awesome. Readers are going to absolutely love this. This will not be as confusing as Multiverse in the least bit, so don’t shy away. Buy the series and follow the stories. A lot of fun here. Fun for the speculator will be within the back issues of DC’s first run of Convergence stories. Here’s why and how……

Besides the obvious flip of a hot signed/graded variant, if a character from the past makes their mark (or for the first time) in the Convergence story, you’ll have their first appearance because InvestComics told you about it. For example; Convergence Batgirl #1 will feature Stephanie Brown as Batgirl. Stephanie Brown (and as Spoiler) first appeared in Detective Comics #647 back in 1992. This comic on Ebay can be snatched up for $12 in some cases. If you don’t click that RED link you’re probably going to pay more in a few days. Stephanie Brown then went on to first appear as Batgirl (post crisis) in Robin #126 in 2004. There is a NM copy right now available for $5.99. Click the RED link, you know the drill. And then finally there is the solo Stephanie Brown Batgirl comic; Batgirl #1 (2009). At 99 cents on Ebay right now, yeah how can you go wrong here?

Batgirl_1_InvestComics Convergence_1_InvestComics (2) Robin_126_InvestComics

Convergence Question #1 will feature Renee Montoya as The Question. Renee Montoya first appeared in Batman #475 (1992). This book is in the $10-$15 range right now. Then Renee first appeared as The Question in 52 #48 (2007). These are offered at $3 a piece. And not that many on Ebay right now.

A pregnant Lois Lane will be in Convergence Superman #1. Over the many years of Superman comics and Lois/Clark having a ton of children (adopted, aliens, grown, and theirs) appear in the comics, there is only one cover we see Lois Lane actually carrying a child as a pregnant woman. Check out the cover to JLA Created Equal #1 from the year 2000. This is the only cover Lois Lane has ever appeared on where she is pregnant. What does this mean really for the speculator? Absolutely nothing, but still a neat nugget to know and to have in your collection as a conversation piece. It’s only a dollar on Ebay right now.

How about getting that New Teen Titans #16 (1982) comic InvestComics mentioned in the InvestComics Hot Picks #333 in August of 2014. Check out the cut out of what was said in that article.

From InvestComics Hot Picks #333 (August 2014)

So let start that movement shall we? Convergence Harley Quinn #1 will feature Captain Carrot and Convergence Speed Force #1 will feature a character from the Zoo Crew. The New Teen Titans #16 is the first appearance of Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew. It’s a very affordable comic at the moment. No telling if the InvestComics Legion of fans will move the needle on this one. Here’s the things guys/gals, Marvel Comics has rejuvenated Howard The Duck, so DC Comics will be going with their bunny Captain Carrot. See how this works? Buy this first appearance, nothing to lose. No real down side here. Maybe a flat line, but an uptick can occur if DC pursues the rabbit for bigger and better things down the road. You never know.

….Speaking of a bunny. Convergence #1 has a sold out variant. The variant cover features the new Batman on the cover by Greg Capullo. Good luck buying this variant for under $99. A good quick flip if you score a high grade along with a signature(s) by Greg and the other creators on the book. This is currently the only sold out Convergence comic right now.

The rest of the Convergence titles to check out this week; Convergence Justice League #1, Convergence Nightwing Oracle #1, Convergence Titans #1, Convergence Batman and Robin #1 and Convergence Atom #1.

Some sold out comics to talk about. Please remember (as we have stated numerous times), sold out comics DO NOT equate to automatic money. Merely a heads up to speculators to determine if the value is worth the time to equate to more money. Lots of sold out comics never amount to anything. Do not determine your portfolio on buying sold out modern comic books, you will in fact lose money. With that said, here are some sold out books…..

Marvel killed Wolverine and they are out for more blood. This time they will be offing Deadpool in Deadpool #45. No worries, he’ll be back. But for now he’s going to be taking a dirt nap. The Skottie Young ($60) and Tony Moore ($125) variants are sold out. And a sold out “3000 copies” available Amazing Spider-Man #300 homage cover.

Howard The Duck #2 features a “bling” variant with the Duck and a Raccoon on its cover. A sold out variant that is a nice novelty item. No long term upside here, unless these two wind up doing a team up movie. Only one on Ebay at the current moment at $76.

James Patterson writes big boy books with no pictures. He’s a worldwide best selling author and Max Ride First Flight #1 will be based on a best selling novel. Probably a good bet to check out this comic. The Dustin Nguyen variant is sold out. Here’s a way to get a nice book in your collection and increase the value of your $10 sold out variant. Get Dustin Nguyen and James Patterson to sign your book. Of course a witness and high grade will help too!

Back in 1989 Guns N’ Roses made their comic book debut in Rock N’ Roll Comics #1. While it was a hot book back then, even a hot series actually, it was a dollar short and a day late. The comics featured a ton on great 80 rock hair bands as their featured stories. So what is the problem you ask? Well the first Rock N’ Rock comic came out in 1989 as the hair band sound/scene was dropping off. In the very early 90’s some band by the name of Nirvana changed the entire complexity of the rock scene. No more hair bands! Rock N Roll comics continued to put out comics on Poison, Queensryche, Kiss just to name a few. Those were the days though! Speed to the year 2015. Some of those 80’s bands withstood the test of time and made sure they stuck around and remained relevant. Metallica, Bon Jovi and Ozzy are just a few. Slayer is also one of those bands that made their relevancy past the new millennium. This Wednesday Rock and Roll Biographies Slayer #1 will debut. An all new rock n roll comic. A sold out regular cover and variant here. There are so many bands cramped up inside this comic, it’s a wonder how Acme Press pulled this off. So want a real challenge? A one of a kind comic? Get Judas Priest, Testament, Green Day, Slipknot, Social Distortion, NOFX, Exodus, Primus and Faith No More to sign the comic. The REAL challenge isn’t getting these great bands to sign your book, the REAL challenge is getting a high grade on the book when you get it graded! Almost near impossible really. Does beer on a cover take down a grade?

Okay no more talk on the sold out books, let’s talk Aspen Comics. Yes a rare appearance by Aspen here on the InvestComics Hot Picks. Not one, but two Aspen comics to check out this week. Four Points #1 is an all female team written by Scott Lobdell. And the other Aspen comic is Lola XOXO #1. Lola first appeared in the free comic book day; Worlds of Aspen 2014. With all of the strong female leads these days from the big two, it’s important to point out other leading ladies from the other companies too. Never know too, maybe another Tomb Raider type character can emerge and get to kicking some as* on the big screen one day. Never know! Either way, these comics look like an enjoyable read.

Image Comics has a lot to offer up this week. Savior #1 has Todd McFarlane on writing duties. He’s not penciling here, just writing. Even if he was penciling, doesn’t really mean much in the speculative world (see Haunt). Here’s the thing with Todd. He’s a legend, but a legend on two characters. For the newbie’s reading, those two characters are Spider-Man and Spawn. Not to diminish anything Todd has done, he’s an amazing artist. Very awesome. Just simply pointing out that most fans really want to see Todd work his magic on those two characters the most. Whenever Todd does do something new, fans go bonkers at first and then the dust settles. Fans go bonkers when he draws, not writes. Therein lies the issue with Savior #1. Not saying it won’t be a good book, but fans want to see Todd draw. That’s what he does best. He’s come a long way since writing the Spider-Man books (15 total) for Marvel all those years ago. 25 years ago to be exact. Wow time flies! So what to do about Savior #1 you ask? Very simple, buy it, read it and enjoy it. Maybe it’ll hit, maybe it won’t. It all really depends if this story strikes a chord and creates a buzz. It’s really a wait and see with Savior #1 as far as the speculative market is concerned.

Two Image Comics series come back into the fold this week with an all new story to tell. The popular Jupiter’s Legacy from 2013 makes its return this Wednesday with Jupiter’s Circle #1. Mark Millar returns as writer, as artist Frank Quitely will be doing only the cover this time around. Enter artist Wilfredo Torres. Wilfredo’s earliest work (first work?) is in Salem: Queen of Thorns #0 (Boom Studios). The other Image Comic returning this Wednesday is Legacy of Luther Strode #1. The original creative team from 2011’s The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is back. The 2011 Luther Strode was very well received. Surprised its taken so long to get another Strode story going.

Also from Image this week are two followups to hot number one comics. Lets see what Descender #2 will bring after the sold out number one hit. And let’s see what Southern Cross #2 is able to do as well. Fans are really digging both of these series right now.

InvestComics gave readers/speculators a heads up on Astronaut Ink’s New Zodiax #1. This week New Zodiax #2 hits. A well received number one issue and probably a well received number two issue coming up.

Darth Vader #4 features the revenge of the Battle Droids. What does this mean exactly? Only one way to find out. Ant-Man #4 might feature a debut as well. Only one way to find out!
