Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: TWO CGC comics for $99. The Avengers #234 (1983) 9.8 AND 9.4. The Scarlet Witch is a mainstay (for now) within the Marvel cinematic universe. The Avengers #234 comic retells the Scarlet Witch origin. Both a 9.8 and a 9.4 priced at $99 is a sweet deal. This isn’t $99 for each, it’s for both. Two 1983 comics graded, with one being a 9.8 is a good deal. Better get this before it’s gone.

From Dark Horse comes a new Predator story; Predator Life And Death #1. Read the InvestComics review right HERE from filmmaker Ian Powers.

Image Comics’ The Discipline #1, written by Peter Milligan and art by Leandro Fernandez looks like a great read.

We love how the new Green Lantern #50 variant cover has Batman and Superman on it. No Green Lantern at all. Where’s Green Lantern? Get that money DC! But the Doug Mahnke cover is kinda sweet though.
Find out more about the new Batgirl villain in Batgirl #49. The conclusion of the Batman And Robin Eternal #22 story line will bring every single Batman partner into one book. His minions, his second fiddles, his pipsqueaks, his “you’ll never be Batman” peeps….you get the idea.

The Dustin Nguyen Batman Beyond #10 variant is quite awesome.
The $600+ Jim Lee Dark Knight III The Master Race #3 variant is still available at certain outlets. What a surprise right? A $600 brand new comic book is not sold out? Decisions Decisions…..should you go with that mid-grade first appearance of Black Panther or buy this book?

Mary Jane makes it onto another Invincible Iron Man cover; Invincible Iron Man #7. This cover is drawn by Kate Niemczyk. Marvel’s Women of Power covers are fantastic.
What’s behind the “classified” black-out section on the Deadpool #8 cover? Only cover artist Scott Koblish knows! The secret comic cover variant. Too funny.
The Black Widow title will work on its sixth volume number one issue. Mark Waid will write this volume.
The new Spider-Man series starring Miles Morales is doing very well. The Spider-Man #2 cover from Sara Pichelli will have non-fans pick this up and thumb through. More fans!
Avengers Standoff Assault On Pleasant Hill Alpha #1 (Party Cover) is sold out. Maybe is has to do with Gwenpool being on the cover?
The new Uncanny Avengers series is going to focus on the character Synapse; Uncanny Avengers #6. Her first appearance came in The Uncanny Avengers #1. The first EVER appearance of this character came in Daredevil #376 (1998).

Review: Army of Darkness: Furious Road #1

ARMYOFDARKNESS

Army of Darkness: Furious Road #1 – Click to Buy/Bid

NOTE: The InvestComics site is BEST viewed on Google Chrome!

Army of Darkness: Furious Road #1
Dynamite Entertainment
Written by Nancy A. Collins
Pencils: Kewber Baal
Colors: Schimerys Baal
Letters: Simon Bowland

(Click on the comic cover or red link to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers)

Visually this comic takes it all the way down a Furious Michigan road, with art supplied by the Brazilian husband and wife team of Kewber and Shimerys Baal on pencils and Colors respectively, and words supplied by veteran novelist and comics extraordinaire, Nancy A. Collins who is very well know for her prose series, Vamps, and has done such notable comics as Swamp Thing and Jason vs. Leatherface.  It seems to me that nobody captures horror quite like a southerner, and with a the brazillian team on Art they went deep south on this one, but Collins and the Baals take a Furious Road north to Michigan taking on the latest instalment in the comics life of Ashley Williams in, Army of Darkness: Furious Road!  They waste no time in getting to the action as we see a car chase out of Detroit, imbued with action points straight out of Mad Max.  Dracula’s Daughter leads a team of monsters that include a mage, Frankensteins monster, a Werewolf, a Gargoyle a Nun and a Priest, as they fight their way to exactly where anyone would go 20 years after an Apocalyptic event; S-mart of course!

Now Previously many of us out here in comic review-land thought this comic was a silent one, but do not fear, this one has words a plenty, and Nancy A. weaves a gothic spark into this colourful tale, but that glimpse of the unlettered art, gave me a chance to really take in the Kewber’s pencil work and Schimerys’ colors, and I was amazed at how clearly the story read with nothing but pictures, I was so amazed, I wish this team would try a silent comic now! I’ve definitely become a fan of the Baals!  One of the things I love about this job is that I get to see so many great creators, and Kewber Baal really has some strong story chops, it’s obvious the writer and artist have some really great communication going on here, and it’s always nice to see this happening, especially on an issue number 1, So I am guessing it’s only going to keep getting better form here.

However it’s not all sunshine and roses, and there were a few things that didn’t completely work for me when I saw the words on the page, the words themselves were nice, unfortunately though, the sharp vectors that were set up in the Art were broken a bit with the captions and balloons, this happens sometimes, but I hope that in the future the balloon placement plus the story flow a bit more, because this looks like a really great ride, Army of Darkness: Furious Road is a fast paced genre mixing adrenaline rush and fans of the comics medium and monster stories should put this on their “to buy list” this week. So shop smart,  and shop, S-mart!

Review: Predator: Life And Death #1

Predator Life And Death #1

Predator: Life And Death #1 – Click to Buy/Bid

NOTEThe InvestComics site is BEST viewed on Google Chrome!

Predator: Life And Death #1

Dark Horse Comics
Script: Dan Abnett
Art: Brian Albert Thies
Colors: Rain Beredo
Lettering: Micheal Heisler

(Click on the comic cover or red link to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers)

I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear about this book!  When Predator vs Aliens came out back in the dayt I read the books religiously, I don’t think any other series grabbed my imagination quite the same way, prompting me to write several embarrassing letters in to Dark Horse comics. However, the time in between was a bit of a desert for fans of this story setting, and led to disappointment after disappointment in every medium. Scan the time code to 2016, and when I open this #1 in the Life and Death story line of Predator, you are back in the summer of 1990 again. The comics renaissance is in full swing, and writer Dan Abnett has done a book that is worthy of carrying the long dormant torch of the Predator franchise forward. It is a great move on Dark Horse editorial’s part to enlist  one of the sci-fi power-horse team who revamped Guardians of the Galaxy, giving us the version we all know now from the MCU film, and Mr. Abnett seems primed to perform a similar service in this universe!

Collaborator, Brian Albert Thies’ noirish art style grabs you by the willy nellies with his heavy confident lines, adding extra gravitas and power to this dark tale of sci fi action. Most of Thies’s previous experience seems to be as an inker, which makes him an unlikely, yet perfect choice to draw this book! The storytelling is strong with this one, and I’m sure after this series, many editors will be friending him on Facebook! Thies’ style is complimented and enhanced by the muted colour palette of Rain Beredo who really brought the world to life. Great job guys!

Abnett and Thies have wonderfully brought the franchise back to it’s roots. By going in and showing us what got us all excited about these storylines in the first place, They have me feeling almost what I felt back when we first met the Predator with “Arnold”. You heard an Austrian accent there, right?  An elite military force is suddenly ambushed and hunted by vastly superior Predator hunters, and tying it together expertly with a climax that hints of whats to come for this band of brothers and sisters. I’m not going to spoil anything here, because I want you to read this, but the cover does have a Predator in front of the Engineer’s ship from Alien/s and Prometheus. After enduring year after gruelling year of having our childhoods raped by Hollywood, it’s nice to see something come together that restores faith and hope in the storytellers of our time. With the reboot of the Predator and Alien franchises looming and a potential Prometheus sequel in the works, it’s a great time to stop by your local comic retailer and pick up these nicely paced pieces of paper!

IC 100 Club Pick: Black Panther #1 (1977) 8.5. Here’s a beauty waiting to be bought for only $100.00. His first solo comic. Black Panther still has upside. His new comic coming out, a yet to be seen appearance in Cap’s Civil War movie, and a solo movie. Fanboys, please do not email us or make fanboy comments on our social media or here. If you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading please. If you’ve ever had a heated debate/fight/argument/cried (as an adult) over who is stronger Hulk or Superman or anything similar resembling a deep love of a comic character and know nothing about business, then please skip the opening here.

Have you’ve seen the new Deadpool movie? Well if haven’t, you probably have seen the aftermarket going bonkers after its release. New Mutants #87 (first full appearance of Cable) is quickly becoming the NEW New Mutants #98. This isn’t a bad thing if you’re on the side of the seller. If you’re a buyer, well you’re going to have to pay a severe premium in order to get your hands on the Cable book if you want it. Here’s the thing, and we’ve said it time and time again within the blogs of the InvestComics website. The New Mutants #98 comic is overpriced and so is (will be) New Mutants #87. The absurdity in pricing for these comics is almost comical actually.
Here are some quick numbers. Let us remind you here, CBCS does not have a census. Which means these numbers are probably much higher. These are CGC numbers…..
There are a total of 1000 New Mutants #87 graded at 9.8. 1087 graded at 9.6. A total of 3804 graded so far. That’s currently, that number will climb steadily and remember, this does not include CBCS. New Mutants #98; 2307 graded at 9.8, 2806 graded at 9.6 and a total of 9514 total graded. Probably over 10,000 graded counting CBCS.
Doctor Strange #169 (1968) 30 graded at 9.8, 70 graded at 9.6 and a total of 1063 graded. How is it that New Mutants #98 is rivaling this comic? Now all the fanboys got their panties in a bunch. Relax. We understand it’s a popularity contest right now, but here is some truth that the other wannbe InvestComics sites will not tell you. The Doctor Strange book is by far and away a better sound investment. Instead of spending $400/$500 on a first appearance on a comic(s) that are well documented as to having many copies available, use your business tactics and understand that supply and demand will eventually equate into the equation here and you will lose if you hold onto your comic a bit too long. It’s inevitable, you will lose money on New Mutants #87 and #98 because you refused to let it go. Anyone spending large amounts of money to have these comics in their possession, better have a plan to sell at an opportune time or else you will be in the red. Just in case you haven’t notice, we’ll say it, the comic book market has been and continues to see a massive correction. Especially the moderns. That first appearance of Spider-Gwen (variant) that InvestComics advised AGAINST buying at ridiculous prices is more than $300/$400/$500 below its asking price from more than a year ago. InvestComics warned our fans, while the other fanboy sites encouraged the buying frenzy. We’re here to spill truth and guide you, not help you lose money. Do not give into the hype of a comic or comics that saw prints of upwards to 225k a piece (New Mutants #98 and a bit less for New Mutants #87). That’s a quarter of a million copies of ONE comic book. What does this mean actually? Well it means there are several dealers and collectors that are sitting on long boxes full of Deadpool and Cable first appearance comic books. Can we say the same for a classic comic like Doctor Strange #169? No we cannot. Not hating on the first Deadpool or Cable here, but use common sense when spending that hard earned money. Realize that these two particular comics have a ceiling AND more importantly a ground floor. If you’re a buyer at a premium for ANY 90’s (*ahem* Doomsday *ahem* Apocalypse) or modern book), you have to know when to dump it or when the correction in the market does in FACT happen, you’ll be in the red and you’ll never make that money back. We’ve said this before, we’ll say it again. the real money is in Bronze/Silver/Golden. And one more thing. About Doomsday and Apocalypse, most likely one trick ponies. We’ll see them once and they’ll fade into obscurity never to be seen again on the big screen, thus driving that premium price back to the correct area.

And the award for longest title of the week goes to…….Hellboy and the BPRD 1953 Beyond The Fences #1! With this award the readers will get Writers Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson along with artist’s Paolo Rivera and Joe Rivera. Hellboy: Year Two. Yep, we’re in.

Maybe DC Comics received a special bundle price for the amount of Neal Adams variant covers we’re getting this month. Here are the covers this week from the legend himself; Flash #49, Deathstroke #15 (the Tyler Kirkman regular cover kills), Aquaman #49, Superman Lois And Clark #5, We Are Robin #9, Teen Titans #17, Cyborg #8, Grayson #17, and Superman #49.
And for the second week in a row, a Neal Adams Superman Wonder Woman variant comic is sold out. Check out Superman Wonder Woman #26 as Korean artist extraordinaire Kim Jung Gi pencils his second issue with the big three (Supes, WW, and Bats). We informed our fans last week about Kim Jung Gi. This guy is the real deal. Kim actually does the cover art for one of these variants (pictured here).
The real reason we have Neal Adams overload this month is because Superman The Coming Of The Supermen #1 will be coming out. Neal Adams will be the writer/artist here for the six issue mini-series. Fans are looking forward to a boldly told story and art from Neal. He will not disappoint here.

After a slight blip, Batman Dark Knight III The Master Race #3 will be back on schedule. And with it, as usual, a ridiculous amount of variant covers. All the covers are nice, nothing so riveting that you’ll need to pluck down a months worth of allowance for, but the Midtown Comics Greg Capullo cover is cool (pictured here).

Crazy eye candy from cover from Lee Bermejo coming this Wednesday. Check out We Are Robin #9. And more of the same from Michael Cho’s Daredevil #4 (Vol 5).

IDW pits two unlikely franchises together for the first time ever, Street Fighter X and GI Joe. Yep, fun for all! A whole bunch of nutty variants will be available. The Matt Waite pixel cover is good, but our fav is the Paolo Villanelli cover.

Comic fans will be introduced to an all new mutant on new comic book day. Check out the introduction of Bailey Hoskins in X-Men Worst X-Man Ever #1. Definitely a comic to pay attention to.
Marvel warns fans about the last page in All New All Different Avengers #6. Don’t go to your shop and open to the last page now! It’s not a library you know! Hahaha!

With the press coverage Faith #1 received, it now comes time to see how the follow up issue does. Faith #2 comes out Wednesday with less fanfare, so let’s see how many fans stick with it after the first issue. Many will follow up regardless of the press push. It’s up to Faith and Valiant to keep them now.

Better get your hands on these indie’s; Straitjacket #4 (Amigo Comics) is sold out. Gingerdead Man #1 (Action Lab/Danger Zone) is sold out. Plus Ultra #2 (Overground Comics) is sold out.
And rounding out the week, check out Wynonna Earp #1 (IDW), Imposter #1 (21 Pulp).

Review – Gutter Magic #2

NOTE: The InvestComics site is BEST viewed on Google Chrome!

Gutter Magic #2

IDW Publishing
Writer:  Rich Douek
Pencils:  Brett Barkley
Color: Jules Rivera
Letterer: Nic J. Shaw

(Click on the comic cover or red link to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers)

The books that are coming out of the new Comics Experience imprint with IDW are really hitting all the bases here, if Gutter Magic is any sort of indication of whats to come, I think we’re going to see some regular spaces reserved on the racks, and Gutter Magic#2  needs the space!  Right into the action, and picking up where we last left Cinder and Blacktooth, writer Rich Douek and artist Brett Barkley, continue to weave the spell that they cast on us in the completely sold out Gutter Magic #1. I hope you got your copy of that one!  But if you didn’t, be sure to pick up Number 2, because this one cranks the story up to the next level! It’s all too often you see issue one making this amazing splash, and then issue 2 drops off and lags, along with sales, but not so here, reader!  The wonderful cliffhanger that was set up in the last issue, was expertly resolved with one of the best hooks I’ve seen done outside of a first issue, and then our heroes are off on the rest of their adventure.  The plotting is solid, and the pacing is extremely well thought out. I read this one twice, once only looking at the art, and again with the full word/image experience, and the clarity of the visual information storytelling is on point, and nicely coupled with distinct character voices. Everything is clear, but you never know what to expect next.  Rich and Brett, expertly beefed up and exposed even more of the tantalising world they teased us with in #1, further deepening the mythos with compelling new characters and skyscraper scaling stakes in this instalment of their magical alternate Earth quest.  Keep your eyes on Rich Douek, he’s got the kind of storytelling chops that you see in people that end up being known as Mike Mignola or J.K. Rowling.  This little story has been breaking the internet with all the buzz, so if #2 sells out as fast as # 1 did, it’s going to be really hard to get your hands on these in the future. You might just feel like some kind of unlucky comic bastard missing out on the opportunity to pick this one up in the knowledge that fate had plopped you in a time when such sequentially artistic gold was being published. Grab it, read, put it in plastic, spray it with mom repellant, and lock it in a safe, because it might not ever be 2016 ever again!

We have two IC 100 Club Pick’s this week and they’re both under a $100! Now that’s good stuff. The first comic is Machine Man #1 9.6 (1978). This Bronze Age comic is graded by CBCS. It’s only $50! Legend Jack ‘King’ Kirby provides both the cover and the interior for Machine Man’s first series. This comic is also the first time the character is referred as ‘Machine Man’ and not Mr. Machine. A $50 bill grabs this gem.
The next IC 100 Club Pick is 1st Issue Special #5 8.5 (1975). Another All Kirby issue that includes cover and interior art. This beautiful 8.5 graded CBCS comic is the first appearance of Mark Shaw, a.k.a. the Manhunter. A first appearance high grade Bronze Age comic from Jack Kirby for $50?? AND free shipping?? Have you seen the latest InvestComics Checklist that came out this week? Bullseye!…right HERE.

Creator Joe Harris will write the new Image Comic; Snowfall #1. It’s an extra paged comic at the same $3.99 price point. We all love that now don’t we?! Joe is an obvious talent, a fabulous writer, look for this comic to do well.
A beautifully done variant from Rafael Albuquerque; Huck #4 (Image Comics). Rafael pays homage to a famous movie poster. If you don’t know what movie by looking at this cover, well that’s too bad.

Sticking with the cover theme, Neal Adams returns once again this week with his DC Comics variants. Neal is still on top of his game. These comic covers are fantastic; Robin Son Of Batman #9, Martian Manhunter #9, Harley Quinn #25 (The Amanda Conner cover is awesome too), Titans Hunt #5Sinestro #20, and finally the awesome Wonder Woman #49 cover.
…..And about that Wonder Woman comic. Korean artist extraordinaire Kim Jung Gi will pencil a story inside of this book. He’s a tremendous artist and he hasn’t done much of any mainstream work in the comic book industry (Marvel/DC/Image/Etc). One of the only comics we could find that he’s done is Flash #33 (2014). He’s credited as the cover artist here. And it’s a fantastic cover too! One more thing, Wonder Woman #49 (Neal Adams) is sold out.

Here are some other great indie number one comics to look at this week. A second series here from Dynamite Entertainment; Grumpy Cat and Pokey #1. Shikari Force Hunters #1 (Graphic India), and Dusu Path Of The Ancient #1 (Stranger Comics).

Daredevil #181 (1982) – One of the most iconic comic books in history here, the Death of Elektra. What If #35 (1982) – A few months after knocking off Elektra, Marvel immediately went to the well and made this comic. They already knew they struck a cord with comic fans and were cashing in. See they’ve been doing this for years! Frank Miller writes and pencils this alternate universe story. Oh and legend Steve Ditko pencils the first appearance of the Cat People in another story. No really, we’re not making that up.

Daredevil #197 (1983) – Yuriko (later becomes Lady Deathstryke) makes her first appearance. Bullseye appearance.

Daredevil #200 (1983) – A classic John Byrne/Terry Austin cover.

Alpha Flight #34 (1986) – Bullseye finally steps away from the Daredevil comic. His first appearance outside a DD comic is in this Alpha Flight comic. Alpha Flight? Odd. He’s not on the cover though.

IC 100 Club Pick – Firestorm #1 (1978) – Click to Buy Now

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Most of the time, some of the more obscure titles make their way onto Ebay later on in the week or right on/at/before new comic book day on Wednesday. This week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Firestorm #1 9.0 (1978). This graded 9.0 is only $75 with free shipping. With Firestorm as popular as he is, this comic is a great buy. Yes the speculative market has calmed down a bit since the character was ultra hot at one time, but now is a perfect time to get back in the market and buy this fantastic first appearance. Who knows, maybe DC’s new “Rebirth” will include Firestorm in his own title (again), but this time they gain momentum on his popular status once again. It really doesn’t matter if nothing happens to be honest, this is a good buy for the first appearance at only 75 bucks…….and free shipping!

As InvestComics pointed out last week regarding Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #1. We spoke about the starring cast with Deadpool and it seems as though we were on to something (as usual). This Wednesday’s Deadpool #7 will feature some backup stories pertaining to those exact characters we gave everyone a heads up on! We won’t say told you so…….yet.
It will be an anniversary issue as well. 25 years of Deadpool. That was a quick 25, time is flying by! So what should Disney do to cash in on the monster Deadpool movie coming out next week? Put out a special limited edition Deadpool book? Give fans a hostile takeover on various Marvel covers (that’s ongoing right now actually). How about a price point at $9.99? Yes, this sounds right. Awesome! Granted it’s an “anniversary” issue at 96 pages, but $9.99? Marvel/Disney are some smart suits aren’t they?! Make that money!

A plethora of variants (all starting at $9.99) accompany this issue, but one standout cover already catches our eye. The best part? It’s the regular cover! (Even though we’re looking at $9.99 across the board) Artist Tony Moore lets Wade Wilson have his way with the Walking Dead #1 cover. Very unique cover from Tony, we’re a buy here regardless of the bit*hing we’ve done.

If you’re a regular reader here, you’ll already know about this, but it’s been a little while since we mentioned it to the current speculators/readers. Buy Star Wars comics. There are introductions going on in some books that may seem meaningless now, but if one of these characters ever find their way to the screen or even have their own successful spinoff comic, you’ll be unhappy that you didn’t take our advice. Besides all that, and more importantly, they’re great reads. Check out Darth Vader #16 as this series begins a new story arc.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Learn more about the new villain Espectro in Silk #4. Espectro first appeared in the previous issue.
It looks as though a villain will be getting a makeover in All New All Different Avengers #5. It’s always great when comic companies change the look of one of their characters and then watch the fanboys lose their minds.

Scott Snyder is wrapping up his Batman run and Batman #49 promises some big plot lines about to put a bow on everything.
DC’s Batman Arkham Knight Batgirl And Harley Quinn #1 will reprint Batman Arkham Knight #1: Batgirl Begins (2015) from last year. Apparently DC feels the need to slap Harley Quinn on almost anything these days to get some attention **ahem Deadpool**. Although a lame tactic, DC knows how to get revenue streaming and money is how businesses stay in business. Too bad for anyone that doesn’t understand this. Check out the cover here too, the exact same one as Batman Arkham Knight #1: Batgirl Begins (2015), but with a circle cutout of Harley’s face. Not too sure if THIS particular comic is in fact the giveaway or not DC is talking about in their solicit, but either way it’s the first Arkham Knight Batgirl appearance.

More great indie’s to pick up this Wednesday……
Badger #1 from Devils Due Publishing. This character had it firing on some cylinders a bit back in the 80’s. Badger #1 (1983) was from a company called Capital Comics. They went out of business and First Comics then picked up the series. Lasting 70 issues and then an array of restarts from different outlets thereafter. The number one issue from 1983 on Ebay is mega cheap. A fantastic series back in the day.
