First, we just want to ask, have you seen our exclusive interview with the president of CBCS; Mr. Steve Borock? We ask him about the recent big news surrounding CGC getting exclusive rights to the entire building at C2E2 and ECCC and not allowing CBCS to have representation of their own booth at either of those shows. See what Steve Borock has to say about this right HERE.

If you’re a collector seeking new blood in the industry, a reader looking for a new edge of storytelling, then DC has a book for you this week. New Talent Showcase #1 will ‘showcase’ some of DC’s new talent. This comic is definitely worth a look, but that $7.99 price tag may keep some away. Don’t let it deter you too much, it’s not often fans get a comic full of new talent showing off their craft. Maybe one or two or many break out and become a superstar in the industry. Maybe this is their first work. So don’t pass this one shot. DC is probably testing the market here to see if there will be more books like this in the near future. Be sure to make lots of noise at you local comic shop(s) if you want to see more down the road. The last time DC Comics had a New Talent Showcase title was in 1984. Here are some of the names associated with that series as either early work in their career or their first work. Steve Lightle, June Brigman, Javier Saltares (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #10 -1984), Norm Breyfogle (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #11 – 1984), Graham Nolan (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #14 – 1984).
Check out three DC annuals this week; Batman Annual #1 with writer Tom King and art from David Finch. This annual, as DC Comics puts it, will have a ‘showcase of top talent’ within these pages. We love Batman, we love beginnings (number one issue), love the regular creative team, and we love that there will be a load of other talent in here too. Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five Annual #1. Three separate stories going on in here. One that features fan fav Harley Quinn. She dons the cover too. Superman Annual #1; Written by Peter Tomasi and pencils by Jorge Jimenez. Guest starring the Swamp Thing.

On the coattails of the popular appearance on the Agents of Shield television show, Marvel begins an all new series starring Robbie Reyes as Ghost Rider in Ghost Rider #1. We’re really digging the variant covers, but there is a solid reason to buy this comic on Wednesday. The first appearance of a new villain in a backup story. Here’s a quick fact, did you know that no solo Ghost Rider comic has ever reached issue number 100? Maybe this series bucks that trend. We’ll see.
Ivx #1 sets the wheels in motion for the upcoming comic series Inhumans vs. X-Men. Marvel’s Deadpool Back In Black #4 Ron Lim cover sure is an eye catcher.
Black Mask Comics releases a new comic series and we all know what that means right? In case you’re a new reader or one of the few who do not know, most new Black Mask Comics sell out fairly quick and the aftermarkets love them. So this week fans get No Angel #1. Written by Eric Palicki and art from Ari Syahrazad. A story about a Hannah Gregory as a possible mistaken identity…..being a alien from space. Looks as though she takes matters into her own hands (see cover). The preview book of No Angel #1 is selling for a premium in the aftermarket. Jump on this comic. Invest wisely. Read comics.

Valiant Entertainment introduces a new member into their family this Wednesday. Savage #1 debuts the new character in his self-titled book and we think it’s going to be a warm welcome on new comic book day. With talents like writer B. Clay Moore and art by Clayton Henry and Lewis LaRosa, this comic is a no-brainer to check out. Look for early sellouts and demand bringing multiple printings down the pike.
Mask Mobile Armored Strike #1 from IDW Publishing should satisfy the need for all of the 80’s fans of the original MASK Series. The Paul Pope variant cover is stellar. A 50/1 ratio. The original DC series; MASK #1 debuted in 1985. IDW also debuts a new Transformer series; Optimus Prime #1. Looks as though an introduction may occur. Artist Kei Zama and writer John Barber bring us the action. Revolution #5 brings everything together for the IDW universe. An important issue if fans want to see the birth of a continuity universe.
Breaking news from BleedingCool.com has many comic fans feeling a bit emotional about what recently occurred. CGC has become the exclusive grader at C2E2 and Emerald City Comic Con. Meaning that the ‘other’ grading company; CBCS is not allowed to set up within the confines of those buildings. A bit startling for many fans of CBCS to say the least. We reached out to the president and primary grader of CBCS, Steve Borock, to see what he thinks.
InvestComics: Hi Mr. Borock, How’s it going these days?
Fantastic, thanks! That said, please call me Steve, as I am just another hobbyist with a great gig.
(IC): Great, Steve it is! Let’s jump right into the news this past week. It seems to many onlookers that CGC is monopolizing the market from a business point. They signed an exclusive deal with ReedPop as the exclusive grading company at two conventions; C2E2 and ECCC through 2019. What does this mean for CBCS not being able to provide a service at these shows for their customers that choose CBCS and not CGC as their go to grading company?
(SB) Well, first, the “onlookers” are absolutely correct. CGC, with the help of ReedPop, are trying to monopolize the market under the guise of “This is what collectors want.” This is untrue from the comments on social media, the emails CBCS and CGC have received, and the collectors and sellers I have talked with. In my humble opinion, it’s an “anti-trust” lawsuit just waiting to happen. If ReedPop wants to name our competitor their official grading service and want them to be the ones doing “On-site” grading, that’s fine, but banning CBCS from the floor of their shows is not healthy for our hobby or what many people want.
To answer your other question, this does not mean that the collecting community will not have a choice. We will be making a big announcement very soon about how the sellers and collectors who only want to certify their comic books through CBCS at these shows will be able to do so.
(IC): Do you foresee a ‘slab war’ as some fans are calling it or is there enough room for everyone?
(SB) The term “Slab wars” is just hype. Period. It’s divisive and not healthy for our great hobby. We all grew up reading about good verses evil, no one wants a “war” except people who feed on that kind of thing. I do not and CBCS does not. There is room for everyone and everyone should have choices. CGC (the company I helped create) wants to be the only game in town, and they realize they now have real competition for the first time since they opened. They are afraid, and once again, in my opinion, are afraid because they no longer own the entire market, but just a huge chunk of it. They have never had enough genuine concern about another grading service before, because those companies were not composed of real specialists and true hobbyists with the ethics and a love for our hobby that CBCS has.
(IC): Would CBCS ever sign an exclusive deal with a particular convention(s) as a means to ensure that you’re not left on the outside looking in?
(SB) We have been asked before if we want to have CGC left out of a convention and have always said “No.” As I stated before, we at CBCS are true hobbyists that believe collectors and sellers should have choices. Picture your local supermarket as a convention. You don’t walk in and just see Coke, you also see Pepsi, RC Cola, and more. People want choices and the conventions should give them the choices they want.
Look, this is a “David vs Goliath” scenario, except this time Goliath (CGC) is afraid of David (CBCS), not the other way around.
(IC): With a recent bump in the proverbial road for CGC, the ‘you won’t like the results….’, what is your take on that?
(SB) I think it was a pretty strange thing to state and a very clear look into how CGC feels and works. I will let the collecting community make up their own minds about those statements. Our community is smart enough to read between the lines.
(IC): Knowing that bashing another company is never beneficial for any professional outfit, which CBCS does not do and we respect CBCS as a company as we do CGC, we ask you, why should a potential customer prefer CBCS over CGC as their grading company of choosing?
(SB) Because we are better! (laughs) Really, it’s a matter of choice and trust. We have some of the most knowledgeable and honest hobbyists in the world working at CBCS. Our holder is crystal clear and archival safe. We care about every comic that comes in the door, whether it’s worth $100,000 or just a dollar, because that comic means something to the owner, and we respect that.
AS to you first question, here’s the deal…. CBCS never bashes CGC because it’s bad for business and for our hobby. Hell, When people come over to the CBCS booth at conventions with magazines and Undergrounds, books we do not certify yet, we do one of two things: Walk them over to CGC or send them over to CGC.
(IC): So what’s coming down the pike for CBCS? Where can we meet the crew next and beyond?
(SB) There are a bunch of things we are working on at the moment, but we want to announce them when the time is right and not give our esteemed competition a “Head’s up”.
As to where and when you can meet and talk to the CBCS crew, there will be many, many chances in the coming year.
This Thanksgiving weekend I am giving up my vacation to fly out to “I Like Comics” in Washington state (Great store!) for a charity event to meet and greet with other hobbyists this Friday & Saturday and raise money for comic artist Rebecca Woods. I really dig doing charity work in our hobby and have been doing so for many, many years. We can all be superheroes in our own way.
CBCS will be doing most major conventions through the next year and even many small shows. Keep an eye on our website (www.cbcscomics.com) and our Facebook page (CBCScomics) for all the events and conventions we will be doing. Our “News & Events” page is updated as soon as we confirm a show appearance.

One of Spider-Man’s greatest adversaries gets another number one issue this Wednesday. Venom #1 debuts with writer Mike Costa and artist Gerardo Sandoval at the helm. Have you seen the InvestComics giveaway contest? You could win the exclusive Venom #1 Greg Horn WonderWorld Comics variant. Click HERE and follow the easy instructions to enter. Good luck. Back to talking about the release of the new comic. Well, let’s talk about Venom appearances for a minute. We all know of his “cameo” in Amazing Spider-Man #299 (1988) and his first full appearance is in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988). Those comics can be costly in the aftermarket, so why not shop for Venom’s “second” full appearance (third overall) in Amazing Spider-Man #315 (1989)? Some may overcharge for this comic, but still worth a hunt for a great copy at an affordable price. Most collectors won’t budge so much on #299 or #300, but #315 is more flexible for most. Here’s a crazy Venom comic that a collector can snag on Ebay for about one dollar. Quasar #6 (1989). It’s the first Venom appearance anywhere outside the Spider-Man universe (comic). One more thing. The Venom #1 Todd McFarlane variant has an asking price of $150 right now on Ebay. The McFarlane Venom variant cover is the actual first appearance Todd drew of Venom in the Amazing Spider-Man #299 issue (last page) back in 1988. Nothing new here, just Marvel showing off Todd’s greatness.
Dani Moonstar returns in All New X-Men Annual #1. She last appeared in 2014’s All-New X-Factor #8 and Amazing X-Men #6. They both came out in the same month, we’re not too sure which came out first or if they came out the same week. No matter really, it’s irrelevant, she’s back now. However, of possible relevance is her first appearance in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 New Mutants (1982). Ultimates Squared #1 is a new team title from Marvel. Ultimates Squared are the heralds of Galactus and they’re called the Lifebringer. This is not the first appearance of this team formed by Galactus. Lifebringer first appeared in Ultimates #2 (2016).

The smartest person in the Marvel universe is Lunella Lafayette. A fourth grader. Marvel is out to prove their case as the latest story line begins in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #13. The Amy Reeder cover keeps us guessing, what is connected to what? Creative cover. Civil War II #7 will be the final issue. Great Marko Djurdjevic cover (regular) of Captain Marvel laying the smackdown. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 will feature the first written comic book work by comedian/talk show host/game show host Wayne Brady.
A couple of DC mentions……..this does not mean there aren’t any more superb DC comics coming out, just two that made it here that’s all. So we’re good right? Deathstoke runs into the Man of Steel in Deathstroke #7. A homage Superman cover from Shane Davis. …..And that Jenny Frison Wonder Woman #11 cover really nails a distraught looking WW. Before reading ahead, we feel we need to warn you that our articles contain very harsh truths in them. Not vulgar language, just a good solid dose of honesty. They always have, they always will. If you are easily offended, cannot come to terms that other people have opinions too beside yourself and especially if you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading. Go back to the other places selling you the farm. This is NOT the place for you. We’re here to have fun and not lie to you. Thank you and enjoy!
**Please, if you are a new reader or a regular reader of this article and have not seen or read the disclaimer, we urge you to read it (link provided above and tab on top of site).
NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Most of the time, some of the more obscure titles make their way onto Ebay later on in the week or right on/at/before new comic book day on Wednesday. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).
IC 100 Club Pick: Batman 66 #21 graded 9.8. This modern book has no real bearing on any significance within the speculation market. What it does have are FOUR signatures for only $69.99! With FREE shipping! A personal collectors piece for sure. The signatures include; Jeff Parker, Mike Allred, Laura Allred and Sandy Jarrell. That’s it. Go grab it!

A new Black Panther title will introduce a character named Zenzi. Pick up Black Panther World of Wakanda #1 to see her. Riri Williams will become the latest female to take over a male Marvel character. Riri Williams will star in Invincible Iron Man #1 as the NEW Iron Man. Iron MAN? Hmmm…..okay. Anyway, this will be the latest of the female takeover of the Marvel universe characters that used to be male. Riri Williams first appeared in Invincible Iron Man #7. Riri Williams’ armor also made a cameo in this issue. J. Scott Campbell provides a non-controversial Riri Williams Iron Man variant cover. There is something so satisfying on so many levels to read so many fans are still in a tizzy regarding Captain America as a Hydra dude. America always wins in comics, so relax will ya. Maybe this Wednesday will either send those tizzy fans over that proverbial edge or satisfy them. Captain America Steve Rogers #7 promises to rock our world. We’re ready, bring it!

Writer Gerry Conway and artist Ryan Stegman deliver the latest Spidey installment complete with new characters with Spidey powers. Check out Now Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 with lots of variant covers to choose from. One of the covers you can actually win from us and Unknown Comics. Enter to win right HERE. Good luck! Penn of the comedy duo ‘Penn and Teller’ will write Spider-Man Deadpool #11. Penn Jillette has dabbed in the comic writing a few times. The first time was in Detective Comics #600 (1989). He’s done a couple of DC books and a Dark Horse comic, but this will be the first time he’s getting a check from Disney to write a comic for Marvel. Solo #2 variant cover is an ode to Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants #93 (1990). Right? It sure looks that way.
New Mutants #93
Solo #2
Detective Comics #600
Renew Vows #1
SPM DDP #11
Deathstroke #6 sees the reemergence of Jericho. The last time we saw him was in Convergence New Teen Titans #1. Right? Anyways, one of our favorite books over the years that we pushed was (and still is) Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (1984). Not only the first appearance of Jericho, but the first Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and the origin of Deathstroke. All done by the legendary George Perez. What a fantastic book. DC introduces a brand new character in her own series. Check out Mother Panic #1 by writer Jody Houser and artist Tommy Lee Edwards. The Bengal cover is great, as is the Tommy Lee Edwards Batman cover. Batman appears on two of the four covers. Detective Comics #944 continues the introduction of new characters.

Flash #10 sees an old villain make his return to Opal City since last appearing in 2011’s Justice League of America #59. Shade returns. His first appearance was way back in Flash Comics #33 (1942). Opal City first appeared in more “recent times” in Starman #0 (1994). Readers know how much love we show to show to artist JOCK whenever we have a chance. Check out the All-Star Batman #4 cover. Here are some other eye catching comic covers this week; Batgirl and The Birds of Prey #4 cover by Yanick Paquette. Both Superwoman #4 covers. One by Emanuela Lupacchino and Ray McCarthy and the other from Ben Oliver. Writer Phil Jimenez continues to bring it each month on this title.

Image Comics’ Violent Love #1 has the makings of a film studio scooping it up. Two bad as* bank robbers from different parts, fall in love. Writer Frank J Barbiere and artist Victor Santos bring us this double sized issue for only $3.99. Both the A and B covers rock as well.
Indie Comics……. Black Mask Comics hit a nerve and a home run with fans regarding the release of Black #1. An extremely well done book referencing the constant struggle from within the confines of America and its racial undertones. The second issue will probably cause a stir within the comic community as well as other media outlets. The cover of Black #2 will probably be the reason for this. Maybe this comic (and cover) will make news media turn their heads and eyes, then their mouths will talk about it. Also from Black Mask Comics this week; Forevers #2. This week’s indie hit comic will be Terminarch one shot from OSSM Comics. Artist at war is the premise here. Literally, artist fight in a war against alien beings that sparred them after destroying everyone on earth, but them. Everything is kind of okay, but things turn around as the artist fight back. This comic is sold out on the distributor level.

The new Adam Hughes Betty and Veronica series seems to be hitting a chord with comic fans. We did our press runs at San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con and there were lots of fans talking and gathering around the Archie Comics booth to meet up with Adam. Not only because we all know he’s an awesome artist, but fans were gathering to snag up signed copies of Betty & Veronica comics. Adam is actually making a crossover regarding Betty & Veronica with fans to the likes we haven’t seen in a while. We’re talking about the “regular” comic reader with no really interest in an Archie comic. Check out Betty & Veronica #2 this Wednesday. This January, Archie is about to turn it on it’s head on CW. Check out the InvestComics Archie Comics checklist banner here and click it. Buy up those Archie books, that television series is going to be huge. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman team-up again. This time in Batman TMNT Adventures #1 (IDW). Boom Studios has teamed with the WWE for the release of new WWE comics. First up; WWE Then Now Forever #1. Brigands #1 (Action Lab Entertainment). Namesake #1 (Boom Studios). Galaxy For Hire #1 (Devils Due Publishing). Mummy #1 (Titan Comics).
